Sega Throws Shade At Mario Kart During Sonic SGF Presentation

by admin June 7, 2025

Image: Sega

At today’s Summer Game Fest showcase, Sega showed off Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. The kart racer is a big ol’ crossover event between the blue blur and other Sega characters. After previous leaks claimed Minecraft and Spongebob characters would join the racer’s roster, Sega revealed that several of its own heroes are joining. Joker from Persona 5, Hatsune Miku, and Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza will all be off to the races, as well as Steve from Minecraft, who was hinted at in the leaks. That’s all well and good, but one of the funnier moments of the showcase was Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka taking the stage right after and throwing some light shade at Nintendo and Mario Kart World.

Iizuka made what was seemingly a dig at Mario Kart World during his presentation. He never says the game by name, but says that, “unlike another kart racing game,” Crossworlds has cross-platform multiplayer across PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Best Reveals From The Game Awards 2023

It’s a bold jab to make at the Switch 2 kart racer while everyone is hootin’ and hollerin’ about it just after the system’s launch this week. But it also feels like a fun wink and nod toward the companies’ old rivalry. Back when Sega was making its own consoles and competing directly with Nintendo, the company wasn’t afraid to throw a punch in its marketing. The Sega Genesis tagline “Sega does what Nintendon’t” is still iconic, though it didn’t really pan out for Sega in the long run, given the company is no longer in the console-making business.

Either way, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds does have that cross-platform flex over Mario Kart, which is a Switch 2 exclusive. Sonic and friends are racing on just about every platform, so it will be more widely accessible. That being said, Mario Kart World is probably going to have an unheard of attach rate, given it’s the system seller for the Switch 2 right now. Sega probably knows that and is just having some light fun.

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds launches on September 25.

The Old Country receives story trailer at SGF

by admin June 7, 2025

Today at Summer Game Fest, Mafia: The Old Country took the stage. A new story trailer – Loyalty is Everything – played. All I know is that by the end, my hands were doing the Italian hand gesture. I’m ready to go to Sicily, at least virtually.

To betray one, is to betray all. At Summer Game Fest, Hangar 13 debuted the “Loyalty is Everything” story trailer for Mafia: The Old Country. In this exclusive sneak peek at the next entry in the acclaimed Mafia franchise, viewers got a closer look at protagonist Enzo Favara’s role in the ongoing feud between the Torrisi and Spadaro crime families, as he carries out the Don’s bidding to secure control of 1900s Sicily’s criminal underworld. Mafia: The Old Country is a linear crime drama set against the stunning backdrop of 1900s Sicily. Inspired by the structure of earlier entries in the franchise, players will experience a focused and immersive story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal, and emotional. Mafia: The Old Country launches August 8 on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

Resident Evil 9 Trolls Everyone, Actually Announced At SGF 2025

by admin June 7, 2025

Resident Evil 9‘s executive producer, Jun Takeuchi, announced today at Summer Game Fest that he was not ready to announce anything about the next main entry in the series. Sorry. See you later! (Update: 7:00 EST PM: Actually, Capcom tricked us and announced Resident Evil 9: Requiem.)

The Best Resident Evil Goes VR And More New Releases | The Week In Games

Never mind, folks. Capcom and Takeuchi played a fast one on us and released the trailer for Resident Evil 9 just minutes after telling everyone otherwise. The game is out on February 27, 2026, and is coming to PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Well, I guess he did say we’d get more info in “a blink of an eye.” Here’s the trailer:

In the surprise trailer, we see a woman who is working for the FBI and looking into some strange murders. Then some wild stuff happens, and suddenly we are transported to what appears to be the old Raccoon City police station, but it looks post-apocalyptic, almost. Not sure what’s going on here, but I’m excited for fans to dig in and find all the details.

And here’s how Capcom describes the game from its official website:

Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth title in the mainline Resident Evil series.

Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core. A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team’s depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before.

Original story continues below:

Fans expected a big Resident Evil 9 reveal during the event today as leakers continued to hint that it was going to happen. And yet, it didn’t happen. At one point, the actress who voices Lady D in Resident Evil Village appeared, but that was just to promote a Capcom sale on Steam. Then she appeared again, celebrating the birthday of the series and throwing to Takeuchi, who didn’t introduce a trailer, but instead asked fans to wait a bit longer.

“Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March,” said Takeuchi. “Now, about the latest Resident Evil game you’ve all been waiting for, bear with us a little longer. Just a blink of an eye more, and it’ll be ready.”

Rumors have swirled about a new Resident Evil entry following the release of Resident Evil Village in 2021. Though Capcom did hint at Village officially being the eighth entry via its logo, which contained a stylized VIII, the game didn’t technically include an 8 in the title, leading some to believe it was a spin-off of Resident Evil 7. And with today’s lack of a name or anything else, we will still have to wait and see if Capcom counts Village as a full-fledged eighth entry in the franchise or if the next game will be named Resident Evil 8. It all seems needlessly confusing, but that’s to be expected with this series.

Project Century: Stranger Than Heaven SGF 2025 trailer is Yakuza L.A. Noire

by admin June 7, 2025

Following the reveal of Project Century during The Game Awards 2024, Sega and Like A Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio showed up to Summer Game Fest 2025 with a new trailer, a new era, and a new name: Stranger Than Heaven. Where the initial trailer looked like early-20th century Judgment, where a detective wandered around a rain-soaked, 1914’s Japanese city, Stranger Than Heaven’s latest trailer is more like RGG Studio’s take on L.A. Noire.

A detective named Mako Daito moodily searches for clues to an unknown mystery in a glitzy city filled with people lost in their pursuit of excess, glamorous nightclubs, rowdy street fights, seedy tenements, and neon-soaked high streets. It looks like RGG Studio is digging more into survival and simulation elements than usual as well. In one brief shot, Mako holds a cigarette as an on-screen tooltip pops up that reads “Draws immense hostility when smoking.” He has hunger and thirst meters, a first for the studio, and makes split-second decisions about what to do in fraught situations, like whether to show a dangerous opponent mercy.

The trailer ends as Mako meets up with an American who’s surprised to find that Mako is Japanese and ends with a dramatic declaration from the detective about how he’s lost sight of himself. The action and setting might be unusual for RGG Studio, but the Yakuza-like melodrama remains the same.

Given the Project Century codename and the fact that the new trailer jumped forward in time by three decades, it seems like a safe bet to assume the story unfolds across, well, the century. RGG had little else to say about Stranger Than Heaven and previously recommended that no one even try to figure out what the game is about.

Stranger Than Heaven is planned for launch in 2026.

SteamDB changes might finally herald the end of a long wait for Silksong (again), though with SGF on the horizon, I think Team Cherry has the potential to do the funniest thing of all time

by admin June 3, 2025

Every time I write about Silksong, I feel as though I’m inching closer to an abyss of madness from which there is no return. Each article starts the same—a rite for the uninitiated, an explanation that yes, this game really was announced in 2019, and yes, it really was stated to be coming out “in the next 12 months” in 2022, and yes, fan hopefuls really did wait three more years for a hilariously short clip in a 2025 Nintendo direct promising a release date this year with zero other specifics.

Now, from the bottom of a well of conspiracy, a scrap comes tumbling down the cobbled walls: There’ve been more SteamDB changes that… wait holy crap, these might actually mean something.

As spotted by eagle-eyed industry buff Wario64 on X, several SteamDB updates have been published for Hollow Knight: Silksong, which have quickly gained traction as a deep hit of hopium on the unfailingly unhinged subreddit, with nary a “silkpost” flair in sight.

The main meat is the introduction of achievement languages, which are a pretty good sign the game’s nearing completion—you generally don’t decide what achievements are going to be notable, then translate them unless you’re pretty certain you won’t be making any more structural changes to your game.

Even more hype came down the pipeline when some depots changed. A depot, as explained by the Steamworks documentation, is “a logical grouping of files which are all delivered to a customer as a single group”, which then gets “downloaded and ‘mounted’ on their local drive” when you download a game. The last time one of these depots changed was in 2019, when the game was first announced.

While I don’t think user HHrnz, who spotted the change, is exactly right when they say “This is pretty much confirmation that the game is complete and ready to have its release date announced,” it is a sign that something is going on. And as a resolute skonger, something is always able to be everything.

I’m about to call an utterly unfounded shot, with zero basis in reality and all the hope of someone shouting ‘Kobe!’ from halfway down the court, but, just think about it—Summer Games Fest is coming up. Heaps upon heaps of trailers and events and showcases. What is the funniest thing that Team Cherry could possibly do after six entire years of anticipation?

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

A shadow drop. Just… put it out there. After all, who needs pithy things like press releases or developer diaries when you’ve got a swarm of feverish hollows clamouring for your next game? The Switch 2 is here. The ground is ripe, and the marketing does itself in a resounding swarm of skong.

Ubisoft teasing a big Splinter Cell announcement ahead of SGF 2025

by admin May 30, 2025

The company uploaded a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday with an image of what appears to be Sam Fisher, the beloved main character from the stealth action-adventure franchise. Using eye and mouth emojis, the social account typed “#SplinterCell” with no further context.

Naturally, the mysterious post sent Splinter Cell fans into a tizzy; X users began commenting on it with excitement and hesitation, pleading with Ubisoft not to disappoint and/or tease them. Polygon has contacted Ubisoft for comment and will update this story with any further information we receive.

While Ubisoft has been relatively quiet about its Splinter Cell plans, a recent job listing for the franchise was posted to the company’s career board.

According to the job listing, Ubisoft is hiring a level design director who will “cultivate a vision for the game’s unique stealth-centric missions, breaking down the high-level direction of the game into compelling, tense and well-realized gameplay experiences.”

The job listing details other responsibilities for the level design director, such as “[crafting] and demonstrating examples of interesting and fun gameplay setups that feel uniquely Splinter Cell.”

Ubisoft last teased its Splinter Cell Remake project in December 2021, uploading a video about the perpetually upcoming game on YouTube. The video’s narrator detailed the history of the stealth franchise and explained that some of the devs responsible for the original game, now a part of Ubisoft Toronto, are returning to create a remake of the 2002 title.

“Using the first Splinter Cell game as our foundation, we are rewriting and updating the story for a modern-day audience,” the now-deleted post read at the time. “We want to keep the spirit and themes of the original game while exploring our characters and the world to make them more authentic and believable.

Fans may be treated to more details regarding Ubisoft’s plans for Sam Fisher at Summer Game Fest, which kicks off Friday, June 6 at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. GMT.

Until then, keep the hope alive, Splinter Cell fans.
