AI data centers are swallowing the world’s memory and storage supply, setting the stage for a pricing apocalypse that could last a decade

Nearly every analyst firm and memory maker is now warning of looming shortages of NAND and DRAM that will result in skyrocketing pricing for SSDs and memory over the coming months and years, with some even predicting a shortage that will last a decade. The looming shortages are becoming increasingly impossible to ignore, and the warnings from the industry are growing increasingly dire, as the voracious appetite of AI data centers begins to consume the lion’s share of the world’s memory and flash production capacity.

For the better part of two years, storage upgrades have been a rare bright spot for PC builders. SSD prices cratered to all-time lows in 2023, with high-performance NVMe drives selling for little more than the cost of a modest mechanical hard disk. DRAM followed a similar trajectory, dropping to price points not seen in nearly a decade. In 2024, the pendulum swung firmly in the other direction, with prices for both NAND flash and DRAM starting to climb.

The shift has its roots in the cyclical nature of memory manufacturing, but is amplified this time by the extraordinary demands of AI and hyperscalers. The result is a broad supply squeeze that touches every corner of the industry. From consumer SSDs and DDR4 kits to enterprise storage arrays and bulk HDD shipments, there’s a singular throughline: costs are moving upward in a convergence that the market has not seen in years.

From glut to scarcity

The downturn of 2022 and early 2023 left memory makers in dire straits. Both NAND and DRAM were selling below cost, and inventories piled up. Manufacturers responded with drastic output cuts to stem the bleeding. By the second half of 2023, those reductions had worked their way through to sales channels. NAND spot prices for 512Gb TLC parts, which had fallen to record lows, rose by more than 100% in the span of six months, and contract pricing followed.

That rebound quickly showed up on retail shelves. Western Digital’s 2TB Black SN850X sold for upwards of $150 in early 2024, while Samsung’s 990 Pro 2TB went from a holiday low of around $120 to more than $175 within the same timeframe.

The DRAM market’s trend lagged behind NAND by a quarter, but the pattern was the same. DDR4 modules, which appeared to be clearance items in 2023, experienced a supply crunch as production lines began to wind down. Forecasts for Q3 2025’s PC-grade DDR4 products were set to jump by 38-43% quarter-over-quarter, with server DDR4 close behind at 28-33%. Even the graphics memory market began to strain. Vendors shifted to GDDR7 for next-generation GPUs, and shortfalls in GDDR6 sales inflated prices by around 30%. DDR5, still the mainstream ramp, rose more modestly but showed a clear upward slope.

Hard drives faced their own constraints. Western Digital notified partners in April 2024 that it would increase HDD prices by 5-10% in response to limited supply. Meanwhile, TrendForce recently identified a shortage in nearline HDDs, the high-capacity models used in data centers. That shortage redirected some workloads toward flash, tightening NAND supply further.

Every memory cycle has a trigger, or a series of triggers. In past years, it was the arrival of smartphones, then solid-state notebooks, then cloud storage. This time, the main driver of demand is AI. Training and deploying large language models require vast amounts of memory and storage, and each GPU node in a training cluster can consume hundreds of gigabytes of DRAM and multiple terabytes of flash storage. Within large-scale data centers, the numbers are staggering.

OpenAI’s “Stargate” project has recently signed an agreement with Samsung and SK hynix for up to 900,000 wafers of DRAM per month. That figure alone would account for close to 40% of global DRAM output. Whether the full allocation is realized or not, the fact that such a deal even exists shows how aggressively AI firms are locking in supply at an enormous scale.

Cloud service providers are behaving similarly. High-density NAND products are effectively sold out months in advance. Samsung’s next-generation V9 NAND is already nearly booked before it’s even launched. Micron has presold almost all of its High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) output through 2026. Contracts that once covered a quarter now span years, with hyperscalers buying directly at the source.


Deal alert

The knock-on effects are visible at the consumer level. Raspberry Pi, which had stockpiled memory during the downturn, was forced to raise prices in October 2025 due to memory costs. The 4GB versions of its Compute Module 4 and 5 increased by $5, while the 8GB models rose by $10. Eben Upton, the company’s CEO, noted that “memory costs roughly 120% more than it did a year ago,” in an official statement on the Raspberry Pi website. Seemingly, nothing and no one can escape the surge in pricing.

Shifting investment priorities

A shortage is not simply a matter of demand rising too quickly. Supply is also being redirected. Over the past decade, NAND and DRAM makers learned that unchecked production expansion usually leads to collapse. After each boom, the subsequent oversupply destroyed margins, so the response this cycle has been more restrained.

Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have all diverted capital expenditure toward HBM and advanced nodes. HBM, in particular, commands exceptional margins, making it an obvious priority. Micron’s entire 2026 HBM output is already committed, and every wafer devoted to HBM is one not available for DRAM. The same is true for NAND, where engineering effort and production are concentrated on 3D QLC NAND for enterprise customers.

According to the CEO of Phison Electronics, Taiwan’s largest NAND controller company, it’s this redirection of capital expenditure that will cause tight supply for, he claims, the next decade.

“NAND will face severe shortages in the next year. I think supply will be tight for the next ten years,” he said in a recent interview. When asked why, he said, “Two reasons. First… every time flash makers invested more, prices collapsed, and they never recouped their investments… Then in 2023, Micron and SK hynix redirected huge capex into HBM because the margins were so attractive, leaving even less investment for flash.”

It’s these actions that are squeezing more mainstream products even tighter. DDR4 is being wound down faster than demand is tapering. Meanwhile, TLC NAND, once abundant, is also being rationed as manufacturers allocate their resources where the money is, leaving older but still essential segments undersupplied.

The same story is playing out in storage. For the first time, NAND flash and HDDs are both constrained at once. Historically, when one was expensive, the other provided a release valve, but training large models involves ingesting petabytes of data, and all of it has to live somewhere. That “warm” data usually sits on nearline HDDs in data centers, but demand is now so high that lead times for top-capacity drives have stretched beyond a year.

With nearline HDDs scarce, some hyperscalers are accelerating the deployment of QLC flash arrays. That solves one bottleneck, but creates another, pushing demand pressure back onto NAND supply chains. For the first time, SSDs are being adopted at scale for roles where cost-per-gigabyte once excluded them. The result is a squeeze from both sides, with HDD prices rising because of supply limits and SSD prices firming as cloud buyers step in to fill the gap.

Why not build even more fabs?

Fabs are being built, but they’re expensive and take a long time to get up and running, especially in the U.S. A new greenfield memory fab comes with a price tag in the tens of billions, and requires several years before volume production. Even expansions of existing lines take months of tool installation and calibration, with equipment suppliers such as ASML and Applied Materials struggling with major backlogs.

Manufacturers also remain wary of repeating past mistakes. If demand cools or procurement pauses after stockpiling, an overbuilt market could send prices tumbling. The scars of 2019 and 2022 are still fresh in their minds. This makes companies reluctant to bet on long-term cycles, even as AI demand looks insatiable today — after all, many believe that we’re witnessing an AI bubble.

Geopolitics adds yet more complexity to the conundrum. Export controls on advanced lithography equipment and restrictions on rare earth elements complicate any potential HDD fab expansion plans. These storage drives rely on Neodymium magnets, one of the most sought-after types of rare earth materials. HDDs are one of the single-largest users of rare earth magnets in the world, and China currently dominates the production of these rare earth materials. The country has recently restricted the supply of magnets as a retaliatory action against the U.S. in the ongoing trade war between the two nations.

Even if the capital were available, the supply chain for the required tools and materials is itself constrained. Talent shortages in semiconductor engineering slow the process even further. The net result is deliberate discipline, with manufacturers choosing to sell existing supply at higher margins rather than risk another collapse.

Unfortunately, manufacturers’ approaches to the matter are unlikely to change any time soon. For consumers, this puts an end to ultra-cheap PC upgrades, while enterprise customers will need larger infrastructure budgets. Storage arrays, servers, and GPU clusters all require more memory at a higher cost, and many hyperscalers make their own SSDs using custom controllers from several vendors. Larger companies, like Pure Storage, procure NAND in massive quantities for all flash arrays that power AI data centers. Some hyperscalers have already adjusted by reserving supply years in advance. Smaller operators without that leverage face longer lead times and steeper bills.

Flexibility is reduced in both cases. Consumers can delay an upgrade or accept smaller capacities, but the broader effect is to slow the adoption of high-capacity drives and larger memory footprints. Enterprises have little choice but to absorb costs, given the critical role of memory in AI and cloud workloads.

The market should eventually rebalance, but it’s impossible to predict when. New fabs are under construction, supported by government incentives, and if demand growth moderates or procurement pauses, the cycle could shift back toward oversupply.

Until then, prices for NAND flash, DRAM, and HDDs will likely remain elevated into 2026. Enterprise buyers will continue to command priority, leaving consumers to compete for what remains. And the seasonal price dips we took for granted in the years gone by probably won’t be returning any time soon.

Setting Up a VPN on Your iPhone Is Easy. Here’s How

There are several reasons why you might want to use a VPN on your iPhone. A VPN, or virtual private network, is a service that creates a secure connection over the internet between your device — in this case, your iPhone — and a remote server, to hide your public IP address. VPNs scramble your internet traffic, making it difficult for third parties — like companies or internet service providers — to connect your online activity back to you.

With a VPN enabled, your ISP can’t tell what apps you use or websites you visit, and by the same merit, apps and websites can’t view information about your ISP. If you’re connected to a public W-Fi network, a VPN adds an extra layer of privacy, so your browsing history is masked from that hotspot’s ISP.

In addition to privacy benefits, VPN can also be used for entertainment purposes and travel, like accessing geo-restricted content. If you live in the US but are traveling in another country, you can use a VPN to make it seem like you’re still at home, allowing you to access the American version of Netflix, for example, which typically isn’t available in other countries. On mobile devices specifically, a VPN may be able to help you stream videos in better quality while on a cellular signal by avoiding traffic shaping.

If you’re concerned about privacy, want access to region-locked content, are traveling abroad or want to avoid mobile data throttling, a VPN is worth having on your iPhone. Here’s what to know about choosing one and how to set it up.

Here’s how to use a VPN on your iPhone easily and quickly

Downloading a VPN app, creating an account, choosing a plan and connecting to your VPN shouldn’t take longer than a minute or so.

Installing a VPN app on your iPhone is pretty simple — like most other iOS apps, you’ll simply download one from the App Store. Here’s how to install a VPN on your iPhone:

  1. First, go to the App Store.
  2. Then, tap in the Search bar at the top, enter the name of the VPN app you intend to use then tap the name in the results list or tap search on your on-screen keyboard.
  3. Tap Get next to the VPN provider’s name to download it on your iPhone. 
  4. Next, open the VPN application.
  5. Sign in if you already have an account. If you don’t have an account, create one and sign up for a plan. Browse through the various plans to see if there’s an option that can save you money, especially if you intend to use the VPN for longer than a few months. You should also keep your eye out for any free trials.
  6. Finally, choose a location from the server list and connect to the VPN server.
  7. The first time you attempt to connect to a VPN server, you’ll be asked to install a new VPN profile on your iPhone. The pop-up screen you see in the middle screenshot below, or something similar to it, should appear. To install the VPN profile, tap Allow and enter your passcode and that should be it. 

You should then be connected to a VPN server. Browse through your VPN app and play around with the various settings available. If you want to protect your other devices (your tablet, computer, streaming device and so on), most VPNs allow for multiple simultaneous connections.

If you want easy access to your VPN, you don’t have to go into the VPN app to quickly toggle it off and on. Instead, you can go to Settings > VPN to disconnect and connect to the last VPN server you were connected to.

There’s also a way to manually set up your VPN if needed…

If your employer, school or a self-hosted server has given you connection details, like a server address and a login or certificate, you can add a VPN directly to your iPhone without installing any apps. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration.
  2. Choose the IKEv2 VPN protocol (which is the most common for iOS). IPSec and L2TP still exist, but many providers now prefer IKEv2 for faster reconnects and reliability.
  3. Enter the description, server, remote ID and, if desired, a local ID.
  4. Input the authentication details using either your username/password or a certificate exactly as provided.
  5. Hit the blue check mark (iOS 26) or the Done button (earlier iOS versions) in the top right and then toggle the VPN on in the same menu. You can also toggle it on/off from the main Settings menu or from the Control Center.

There’s also an option to sign in to your work or school account via an email address in your settings, if IT allows you to access your VPN this way.

Which VPN should you use on your iPhone?

There are a bunch of VPN options out there, both free and paid, and your decision basically comes down to two things: what you need from your VPN and how much you’re willing to pay. Here are the best iPhone VPNs on the market.

ExpressVPN is CNET’s Editors’ Choice winner for best overall VPN for 2025. At $13 a month, $75 for the first 15 months or $98 total for the first 28 months (the one- and two-year plans renew at $100 a year), it’s one of the more expensive options. But we’ve found ExpressVPN justifies its premium price because it’s fast, reliable and simple to use. It may not have as many advanced privacy features as other VPN rivals, but it provides the privacy essentials, like a kill switch (which cuts off your internet if your VPN unexpectedly disconnects), split tunneling (to use a VPN connection for some apps but not others) and an audited no-logs policy (to back up its zero-log claims). ExpressVPN is a great option for accessing geo-blocked streaming content while you’re traveling, because it’s so fast and excels at bypassing regional restrictions.

NordVPN is the fastest VPN for iOS. At $13 a month, $60 for the first year or $83 total for the first two years, NordVPN’s one- and two-year plans are initially cheaper than ExpressVPN. But the company’s $140 a year auto-renewal on the one- and two-year plans is significantly more expensive than Express’s $100 a year auto-renewal. The app is also simple to use. You can easily choose a location to connect to and also quickly connect to specialty servers, like Onion over VPN or double VPN servers, both of which make it harder to trace your data back to your device (like your iPhone).

Surfshark is the best value VPN for iPhones and, despite its relative affordability, it doesn’t compromise on privacy features. Like NordVPN and ExpressVPN, Surfshark has an intuitive interface, but it’s packed with privacy features, like dynamic multihop connections, an IP rotator and an ad and tracker blocker. While the monthly plan is steep in comparison to most rivals at $15 a month, Surfshark’s $48 for the first year or $60 total for the first two years undercuts many competitors. Even its $79 a year auto-renewal on the one- and two-year plans is cheaper than ExpressVPN and NordVPN’s renewal prices.

Normally, we don’t recommend most free VPNs, for a few reasons: You might get weaker encryption, data caps, slow speeds, data collection, advertisements, limited server options or even malware. The only free VPN we can enthusiastically vouch for is Proton VPN because it doesn’t track you, blast you with ads or throttle your speeds. Proton VPN’s zero-dollar tier is limited — it doesn’t let you pick a server manually and you can only connect on one device at a time. But Proton’s paid premium plan is a great upgrade path for folks who need more simultaneous connections, a larger server network or additional manual control.

Usually, it’s better to pay if you really need a VPN for privacy protection on your iPhone. Also, most paid VPN options feature a free seven-day trial (as long as you sign up through the App Store) or a money-back guarantee, so there are ways to use paid VPNs without spending any money — but only for a limited time.

Phones are undeniably useful when you’re out and about in the world. Directions, photos, music, messaging the people you’re meeting up with, or even just scrolling while you’re waiting for the bus—it’s all great.

The problem with phones, in my opinion, is when you’re at home. Home is the place where you might rather spend your time reading a book, practicing an instrument, or messing around in the garden. But everything is hard, almost impossible, when your phone is so freaking interesting.

That’s why it’s important to make your phone boring on purpose. Whenever we talk about how to break your smartphone addiction, a trick that’s commonly cited is to set your phone to gray scale. The problem: making your phone black and white and gray all the time makes it less useful during the times you actually need it.

That’s why I set up an automation that sets my phone to gray scale when I arrive at home and turns it back to color when I leave my house. This gives me the best of both worlds: a fully functional phone on the road and a less distracting one at home. Even better, because I’m using Apple Shortcuts to do this, I don’t need to buy or install any apps. I don’t even need to tap a button to make it work.

Here’s how you can set this up. And yes, because these tools are specific to iOS, you’ll need an iPhone.

Step 1: Make 2 Shortcuts

To get started, open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. We’re going to make two shortcuts, one for when you get home and one for when you leave home. Name both appropriately.

For the first shortcut, which will trigger when you get home, search for the action Set Color Filters. Add it and make sure that the shortcut is set to turn color filters On. This will filter out onscreen colors and turn your display gray scale. For the other shortcut make sure it will turn color filters Off. You should now have two shortcuts.

Step 2: Set Up the Automation

From the main screen of the Shortcuts app, tap Automations in the bottom toolbar. We are going to set up two automations: one for when you leave home and another for when you get home.

Video game publisher 2K Games has released an extensive list of recommended graphics settings for Borderlands 4 across Nvidia and AMD GPUs at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. These presets are said to offer players a reliable baseline, something that many found missing right after the game’s launch last week.

The official requirements for Borderlands 4 highlight just how demanding the game is across GPU generations, and the results aren’t flattering by any means. If we look at Nvidia, the minimum requirements list the RTX 2070, which can barely scrape by at 1080p, managing just 30 FPS with DLSS upscaling, along with low settings for textures, shadows, and foliage. A smoother 60 FPS gaming experience at 1080p requires an RTX 3060 Ti. If you want to play the game smoothly at 1440p with 60 FPS, the RTX 3080 12GB is the minimum requirement, but not without DLSS and demanding texture features set to medium.

On paper, the RTX 5090 stands out as the most powerful gaming graphics card available, and Borderlands 4 puts that muscle to good use. According to 2K’s recommendations, it’s the only GPU positioned to run Borderlands 4 at 4K (with DLSS and frame generation enabled) while pushing nearly every visual setting to the max. Notably, these recommendations only target a minimum of 60 FPS, which feels less than impressive for a flagship-grade GPU that costs upwards of $3,000.

On the other hand, the Radeon RX 5700 XT from AMD serves as an entry point for 1080p, although this can only be achieved using FSR and reduced settings for shadows and lighting to maintain frame rates at 60 FPS and above. As for mid-range GPUs like the RX 6700 XT and RX 7700 XT, they should be good enough at 1440p while maintaining much of the game’s visual quality. At the higher end, the RX 6950 XT and RX 7900 XTX push into 4K territory, but still rely on FSR in Balanced or Performance mode to deliver consistent performance.

AMD’s latest Radeon 9000 series is also part of the recommended list, with the latest RDNA 4 GPUs offering the best experience for Borderlands 4. The lineup benefits from FSR 4 and improved frame generation support, thus making the Radeon RX 9060 and 9060 XT suitable for 1440p, while the RX 9070 and 9070 XT are recommended to run the game at 4K / 60.

The release of these preset settings comes in the wake of Borderlands 4 drawing criticism for severe performance issues. Players have reportedly been running into all sorts of issues, ranging from low frame rates, stuttering, and crashes, even on top-tier graphics cards like the RTX 5090. While a 2.7GB day-one patch improved stability and fixed some crashes and errors, reports of inconsistent performance continue to surface. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford acknowledged the situation, noting that players with systems below spec or without SSDs would likely struggle.

The recommended settings also highlight just how demanding the game truly is. Even with Nvidia’s latest RTX 50-series and AMD’s Radeon 9000-series GPUs, players are expected to lean on upscaling and frame generation to achieve smooth performance at higher resolutions. That in itself speaks volumes about the game’s hardware demands, underlying optimization issues, or likely both.

Your first move in Borderlands 4 should be to turn on this classic map setting

The biggest change in Borderlands 4 is undoubtedly the shift towards a full open-world. Long gone are the days of separate zones; now we can walk from end to end with no interruptions—besides killing hordes of bandits, of course. However, this change has always made navigation that much more complicated, as we’re not restricted by closed-off locales and predictable corridors anymore.

Because of this, Gearbox made the baffling decision to remove the traditional minimap in favour of a compass at the top of the screen. Sure, the compass is useful for getting your bearings, but it’s also completely useless in pinpointing enemies in combat. There’s a psycho to your northeast, but they could be standing right in front of you or ten blocks away. See what I mean?

Luckily, tucked away at the bottom of the ‘gameplay’ tab in the settings menu is the radar display. This isn’t quite the minimap of old, which would give you the exact layout of the area, but it will help you track the exact location of enemies in combat relative to your own position.

Plus, you can use the combat radar alongside the compass to have the best of both worlds. With the radar enabled, enemies will no longer be marked on the compass, making it way less cluttered than it is by default. So, use the radar to track your enemies, and the compass to track your quest objectives and other open-world activities with no messy overlap.

Whether you’re a Borderlands veteran or not, try it out and see what I mean immediately—it’s a great boost to your situational awareness. Really, the radar should be enabled by default, as most people are going to completely gloss over this option and needlessly struggle on with the compass. It’s not optional in my eyes.

I think we’ve got a new contender for The Most Specific UI Option award 2025, which I must emphasise, is an entirely real award that I definitely did not make up alongside my Most Specific Bug Fix 2025 award. Quartet, a lovely little turn-based RPG by a four-person team, lets you toggle the Oxford comma off and on again.

In case you don’t know what that is, the Oxford comma is a grammar rule that says you should, generally speaking, put a comma before the last item in a list. This helps clear up misunderstandings. For example: “I’d like to thank my parents, my brother, and God” is a very different sentence to “I’d like to thank my parents, my brother and God”.

After seeing this option do the rounds, I had to know—well, why. So I popped the developers of Quartet an email, and director Patrick Holleman was nice enough to get back to me:

“There are four core team members making Quartet. In seven years of production, we only had one planned, real-time meeting. All four of us have never been in one real-world location at the same time. In fact, we’ve never met Pete (our lead programmer) in person. We live too far apart and our very small budget didn’t include money for travel.

“Because of that, the creative process sometimes played out in idiosyncratic ways. (That doesn’t mean it was haphazard or chaotic. We had an extremely detailed, 70-page GDD before production even began, and we stuck to it like glue.) But, along the way, new ideas popped up.”

New ideas, Holleman says, like optional punctuation toggles. “It was Pete’s idea. He just dropped a message on Discord that he was planning on implementing it. I’m fairly sure that, at the time, the rest of us just sort of blinked at the suggestion. It’s not that it was a problem; we were just more concerned with fixing big bugs or making the next piece of content. (JRPGs require so much bespoke content.)

“For his part, Pete tells me that he wanted a comma in a line of dialogue and I said it didn’t need one. Then he added the setting when nobody was looking.”

Pete—as someone who swears by the Oxford comma, I salute your hyper-specific desire for properly clean communication. As for how the toggle works, Holleman tells me “we put the custom markdown tag ‘oxfordComma /’ in the script, wherever an Oxford comma could go. Then, when displaying the text in game, we check the player’s settings and either replace this tag with the comma or leave it out based on their preference.”

Being an RPG, Quartet has quite a bit of dialogue—turns out, though, the Oxford comma only comes up a grand total of 15 times. “Pete ended up doing a text search for all sentences with a comma and a conjunction and, after reviewing maybe 500 matches, only about 15 spots in the script actually used them. It hardly has any effect on gameplay, but people care—even more than we imagined!”

So there you have it. To all developers, writers, and narrative designers out there: If someone says you shouldn’t use Oxford commas in your dialogue, text boxes, or lore-dumps, you now have a way to get your revenge, justice, and satisfaction. Oh, and if you like your RPGs, you should probably check Quartet out on Steam—options aside, it’s a well put-together game with a pitch-perfect classic vibe.

Holding above this level is critical for XRP to preserve its bullish momentum and sustain its broader uptrend.

From a market structure perspective, XRP remains intact with consecutive higher highs and higher lows. The pullback to $2.80 has not damaged the larger trend, but rather reinforces it as a healthy retest. These retests of major supports confirm the presence of buyers and strengthen the probability of upward continuation. A strong defense of this zone will likely set up XRP for a fresh rally back toward its all-time high of $3.60.

In addition to structural integrity, Fibonacci levels add another layer of confluence. The $2.80 region coincides with the 0.618 retracement zone, a level often associated with strong bullish reversals. Historically, XRP has reacted positively at this level during bullish trends, increasing the likelihood of another expansion higher if bulls hold the line.
