Yet another Final Fantasy 11 server has been closed to new players because it’s too popular

Square Enix is closing another Final Fantasy 11 server to new players because it’s proven too popular.

Back in July, the popular Asura server was closed, meaning new players would be unable to join. Producer and director Yoji Fujito said at the time the overpopulation “has led to a series of unexpected issues that have managed to affect the quality of that experience somewhat.”

As a result, players have instead moved to the next popular server, Bahamut, which has now met a similar fate.

“Bahamut has consistently had the second most concurrent users out of all Worlds and has been close behind Asura in terms of total character population, leading many new adventurers to begin their journeys there,” said Fujito in a new statement.

“While we are pleased to see these Worlds bustling with activity, having too many concurrent users can overwhelm server processes on that World, which affects server responsiveness and increases the likelihood of other related issues.”

From 9th October, players will no longer be able to transfer characters to Bahamut, nor will they be able to create new characters. The Vana’diel Adventurer Recruitment Programme will also be suspended for the server.

Fujito added Asura remains closed as the server load remains unchanged despite a slight decrease in player population.

All of this is occurring 23 years after the MMORPG first launched.

So why are so many players returning or joining Final Fantasy 11? There were discount campaigns earlier in the year that have contributed, but it’s also due to a crossover with MMORPG follow-up Final Fantasy 14, which has seen a decline in players following its less popular Dawntrail expansion.

As for Final Fantasy 14, a Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration is on the way, which will add new mounts and a new battle scenario.

China’s ambitions in artificial intelligence have gained new visibility through its plan to develop a domestic alternative to the massive Project Stargate being pursued in the United States by OpenAI and Oracle.

While the American initiative is expected to support up to two million AI chips, Beijing is advancing its own version anchored by a $37 billion project in Wuhu.

Although far smaller than the $500 billion price tag linked to Stargate, the Chinese project is designed to consolidate existing computing capacity into a more centralized network.

The site selected for this project is in Wuhu, eastern China, and it covers former rice fields along a 760-acre island in the Yangtze River basin.

This land, once devoted to food production, is being converted into a “data island” for four of the country’s largest technology operators: Huawei, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.

By situating the new “mega-cluster” of data centers near major cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, planners hope to deliver faster inference services to dense urban populations.

Beginning in 2022, China encouraged the construction of server farms in interior provinces with cheap power supplies.

Yet these sites often sat idle, as local governments reallocated capacity to areas where demand was higher.

The new plan attempts to fix that by linking both urban and remote data centers through Huawei’s UB-Mesh technology.

This technology can provide redundancy while allowing unused compute power to be sold.

The Wuhu project’s subsidies, which reportedly cover as much as 30% of AI chip procurement costs, further reflect Beijing’s urgency to make the new clusters operational.

China currently holds about 15% of global AI compute power, far less than the United States’ estimated 75%.

Export restrictions have blocked access to advanced GPUs from Nvidia, leaving domestic suppliers unable to fully match foreign performance.

That gap has created incentives for smuggling hardware, although officials seem intent on developing self-sufficient AI stacks to reduce dependence on overseas sources.

The long-term aim is that such infrastructure will allow both companies and individuals to deploy more sophisticated AI tools.

Whether local chips can support this ambition remains uncertain compared to Western options powering major data centers abroad.

The conversion of farmland into server space raises questions about sustainability, resource allocation, and energy demand.

Supporters view the projects as vital for narrowing the technological divide, while skeptics point out the costs of diverting agricultural land and the uncertainty of relying on less powerful local chips.

Discord raises user count to allow 25M people in a single server

Discord has raised the maximum default server limit to 25 million users, just two months after increasing it to 2.5 million.

In July 2025, the platform expanded its cap from 500,000 to 2.5 million. Now, the ceiling has been pushed even further, allowing some of the largest online communities to grow significantly larger.

According to Discord, the update is paired with technical improvements aimed at reducing strain on massive servers. These include batching certain server updates and shifting more processes to asynchronous operations.

“In our July 2025 Patch Notes entry (only two months ago!), we mentioned that we increased the default user limit for servers from 500K to 2.5M,” they said.

“Well… we pushed that even *further* and have now bumped that limit to 25 million users. We also continued to solve larger server pain points by batching certain types of server updates and moving to more asynchronous operations to help bring more stability to large servers.

“We’re committed to providing a great experience for our users, and we’re hoping this work is felt by users and admins of very large servers.”

Discord said the changes are meant to improve stability and create a smoother experience for users and administrators running large-scale communities.

The company noted in its announcement that the expansion is part of an ongoing effort to solve pain points for servers operating at a massive scale, emphasizing its commitment to supporting the growth of major online hubs.

Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo as platforms grind to a halt

A little game by the name of Hollow Knight: Silksong just released, and it has thrown platforms into chaos.

As you can see from images captured by the Eurogamer team, the likes of Steam was brought to a grinding halt as many flocked to get their hands on the highly-anticipated sequel.

Meanwhile, several of us have been unable to add the game to our carts across Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. The PS store, for example, is stuck on Wishlisted at the time of writing.


In the words of our Conner: “Steam it looks like every step has issues, trying to pay with Paypal is leading to error messages.”

The Crew is set to spring back to life as fan-made server emulator project prepares to launch later this month

The Crew, the Ubisoft street racing game that met an unfortunate end in 2024, may live again. The Crew Unlimited, a fan-made effort to revive the game through a “custom server emulator,” says the work is just about complete and will be ready to launch on September 15.

The server emulator is now “feature complete,” according to a message on the newly launched Crew Unlimited website (via RPS) states. “All that is left to do is to thoroughly test and validate the software, then prepare the release.”

“A lot of our time and effort has been put into the project, and it’s finally coming to fruition,” project lead whammy4 wrote. “We are as excited as you are. Thank you all for your patience, understanding and support.”

The project is a reaction to Ubisoft’s 2024 decision to close The Crew’s servers, rendering the game unplayable as of April 1, 2024. Making matters worse, Ubisoft began revoking game licenses shortly after the servers went offline, a big step beyond simply delisting a game that seemed intended to make double-extra-sure that nobody would be able to play the game again in the future. The Crew Unlimited project member ChemicalFlood said at the time that the team was “deeply saddened by Ubisoft’s choice to start revoking licences to this game when people have paid hard-earned cash for it,” but added that the project would be able to bypass that restriction without having to modify any game files, “so the project is still on track.”

The Crew Unlimited will be available for download from the TCU website, but The Crew itself will not: You’ll need to own the game if you want to play, although the dev team noted in an FAQ that “as long as you manage to run the game files, we have absolutely no way to tell a legit copy from a non-legit one, so we just have to let you in.”

The emulator will currently only work with PC versions of the game, but the TCU team says it might be possible to implement console support in the future. Mod support will be wide open in offline modes, but only cosmetic mods will be allowed when playing online.

The bigger question hanging over all of this is how Ubisoft will respond. Projects like these tend to attract the attention of lawyers, typically followed by cease-and-desist letters, but The Crew Unlimited is in something of a unique position: Ubisoft has taken a brutal ass-beating for its handling of The Crew’s shutdown, including a lawsuit and a European Citizen’s Initiative petition that attracted more than one million signatures. The backlash was strong enough that Ubisoft promised not to do it again with The Crew 2 and Motorfest, and dropping the hammer on a project like this would almost certainly stoke those fires all over again. That’s about the last thing Ubisoft needs right now.

These PC systems were more than slightly overpriced

$175,000 computer server package acquired by mayor flagged as suspicious due to an apparent 1,300% markup

A recently elected mayor has brought to light a costly computer systems deal, which was signed, sealed, and delivered by their predecessor. On her Facebook page, Mayor Sally A. Lopez shares photos and documents confirming that her predecessor acquired a “10 million System Server Package.” Assuming we are talking Philippine pesos, that’s equivalent to about USD $175,000. However, the 16 systems look bargain-basement – at best – being based on old Intel 11th Generation processors, with generic case and power choices. According to our calculations, someone appears to have enjoyed a 1,300% markup.

The implications of the new mayor’s post seem pretty straightforward. Perhaps they were elected on a platform of cleaning up corruption. Signing off on a computer server deal for significantly more than the expected cost indicates that the previous mayor’s team was either uninformed or perhaps shared in some part of the profits. Neither conclusion is reasonable.

Lopez had earlier shared a post by politics-centric Ukc Ibrahim. That post claimed that the new mayor questioned the old mayor about the 10 million System Server Package purchase. “The price is really high,” Lopez is quoted as saying. “And it hasn’t even been tested to see if it works or not, but Former Mayor Bajada paid for it right away.” (machine translation).

Unfortunately, this Ukc Ibrahim seems to have mistakenly called out the prior mayor, indicating that the huge expenditure was for a single PC. Some social media and tech channels are still spreading this mistake.

We’re glad to see Lopez clear up the single PC vs 16 PCs error now, though she could have let the dirt on her predecessor stand.

Our calculations

We performed some quick calculations to estimate the cost of a 16-computer package with similar components (based on Intel Core i7-11700 CPU, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD key specs). We scoured Newegg for these and the other necessary hardware components to create a basic setup. Additionally, we note that the ‘package’ included items such as 16 monitors, sets of input peripherals, and UPS systems. There wasn’t any mention of software.

  • Newegg U.S. prices
  • $320 (CPU) + $100 (mobo) + $40 (RAM) + $40 (storage) + $70 (PSU) + $40 (case) + $60 (UPS) + $100 (monitor) + $25 (keyboard/mouse set) = $775
  • For sixteen such systems, we come to a $12,400 total.

There’s a lot of room for error in our math, and indications suggest that some of these PCs may have come with HDDs, as well as (or instead of) SSDs. There’s also the question of software. But there’s also a very long way to go to reach the equivalent of $175,000. We cannot find anything in the pictures or documents to justify the total price being multiplied by 14.

Intel’s 11th Generation processors for desktop PCs debuted in 2021, yet samples like the Core i7-11700, which appear to be what the sixteen PCs are spec’d with, seem to be overpriced in our U.S.-based Newegg findings. They’re even costlier than Intel’s i7-12700 CPUs for some reason. We’d expect the PC systems supplier in the Philippines to have steered customers towards the Core i7-11700 CPUs, as they were a bargain or surplus processor at the time.

Battlefield 6’s next Labs test will feature two of its largest maps, and a first look at the server browser

Battlefield Studios has shared a few key details about what to expect from the next Battlefield Labs test. Unfortunately, Labs remains closed to most of the public, meaning it’s technically not a second Battlefield 6 beta.

The focus of the test, however, is very much informed by a lot of the feedback players shared during the beta’s two weekends.

First off, the next Battlefield Labs test begins today. You can still sign up if you never have, but know that spots are limited and there’s no guarantee you’ll be given access. Battlefield Studios revealed in a blog post that future sessions will also follow a more varied schedule at different intervals.

The most interesting part of this next session is that it features the first iteration of the in-game server browser. This has been one of the most requested features by many veteran players, and though I’m glad to see its return, it’s only limited to Portal.

The goal is to test the basic functionality of the server browser, especially when it comes to UI and stability. The browser lets players host matches, including the ability to make them persistent.

While you’ll be able to see some features of Portal’s Community Experiences, you won’t be able to create your own. Expect a lot of filters and tags, and a library of verified experiences that should resemble what everyone will have access to at launch.

The other exciting feature of this upcoming test is that it’s going to be players’ first hands-on with two of the largest maps in Battlefield 6. Myself and many others felt that the beta’s maps were simply too small, and played quite similarly to each other. While Battlefield Studios addressed several points of feedback following the beta, the developer maintained that it only featured a small selection of maps, and that larger spaces will be shown off in the next Labs test.

We’re here now, and as promised, Labs testers will be able to play the Operation Firestorm remake, as well as Mirak Valley during this test. Battlefield Studios is also looking for feedback around vehicular combat, gadget interactions and gameplay, and how things flow in large-scale environments.

Finally, the developer is going to perform early testing of Hardcore mode to determine the official set of settings (HP, damage etc.).

Though we’re closer than ever to the game’s launch, some of the content in Labs will continue to be in an unfinished state. This will make it easier for developers to alter and tweak as each session progresses.

The blog post confirms that there’s going to be more than one upcoming Labs session, as expected. Indeed, we know that Battlefield 6’s mysterious battle royale mode will first be playable in Labs, even if we still don’t have even a rough date for that

Whistleblower claims DOGE uploaded Social Security data to unsecure cloud server

The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) chief data officer, Charles Borges, has filed a whistleblower complaint alleging that members of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uploaded a copy of a key Social Security database to an unsecured cloud environment in June, the New York Times reported. This may have exposed the personal information of hundreds of millions of Americans. The complaint alleges that under the authority of the SSA’s Chief Information Officer, Aram Moghaddassi, a copy of the country’s Social Security information was held in a cloud environment that lacked any security oversight or adherence to SSA security protocols. The information uploaded was from the Numerical Identification System (Numident) database, and includes the names, Social Security numbers, place and date of birth, citizenship, race, ethnicity, address and even parents’ names of anyone who has ever had a Social Security number, even those who are no longer alive.

 “Mr. Borges has raised concerns internally with various authorities in the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) office and to date has not been made aware of any remedial action. He therefore elevates his concerns out of a sense of urgency and duty to the American public,” the  complaint states. “Should bad actors gain access to this cloud environment, Americans may be susceptible to widespread identity theft, may lose vital health care and food benefits, and the government may be responsible for reissuing every American a new Social Security number at great cost.” 

The approvals to copy the Numident database were, despite the enormous risk of that information falling into the wrong hands, approved expeditiously, according to the complaint. “I have determined the business need is higher than the security risk associated with this implementation and I accept all risks,” Moghaddassi wrote in a memo. Another senior DOGE official, Michael Russo, is alleged to have signed off on the decision in under half an hour. Before accepting his position as CIO, Moghaddassi worked for then-de facto DOGE boss Elon Musk at both Neuralink and X.

In a statement to the New York Times, SSA spokesperson Nick Perrine said the agency was “not aware of any compromise to this environment” and that “the data referenced in the complaint is stored in a longstanding environment used by S.S.A. and walled off from the internet.”

That DOGE should have access to sensitive data in the first place was the subject of tension within the federal government earlier this year. Several lawsuits attempted to block DOGE from accessing SSA, Treasury and Office of Personnel Management data. Via the so-called shadow docket, the Supreme Court struck down a Fourth Circuit injunction preventing the agency from siphoning SSA data in June. Among his other allegations, Borges claims DOGE regained access to the data during the injunction period.

No Path of Exile 2 1.0 release this year, as DDOS attacks blamed for server issues and huge new update revealed

Path of Exile 2 developer Grinding Gear Games had previously and optimistically said a 1.0 full release might happen this year. GGG gave it a 65 percent chance of happening when I spoke with the studio in March. But those ambitions have now been ruled out.

Speaking after a presentation for the incoming Third Edict update, also known as 0.3.0, and answering a question asked by me, game director Jonathan Rogers said: “Yes I believe that we probably aren’t going to hit 1.0 this year.

“What it currently comes down to is there are two things we need to make sure of before we can have a release. The first one is that we have to have a campaign finished – that’s obviously important – and the second one is that we have to be in a balance-state where people are actually happy and things are going well. Until we’ve had a release where we’re sure both of those things are true, then we can’t release.

“It could be March [2026],” he added. “We release things every four months so December would be the next one and then March after that, so I would certainly hope that March could happen, but I’m not going to promise anything. Because ultimately it just comes down to: have we met those two criteria? At this point it would be quite hard to get Act 5 in December but we’ll see about that, and as for getting good balance: we have a little way to go with that. But I’m hoping things will be a lot better for this release.”

The release he’s referring to is the Third Edict, the enormous incoming update for the Early Access version of Path of Exile 2, due 29th August. It will bring, among other things, the fourth act of the game, temporary interlude acts, the game’s first League, a new trading system, a crafting overhaul, a sprinting mechanic, an overhaul for Support Gems and a considerable rework of the existing classes and their skills. Note that there’s no new character class this time around but balance changes took precedence.

I’ll outline some of those changes but before I do there are two other pieces of more urgent news. One is in relation to server issues Path of Exile 2 has been having, which Rogers said were down to DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks. “I’m very aware of the server problems and this has been a major thing that our server admins have been looking into over the last three months,” he told our congregated group of press. “It’s basically all down to DDOSing; we’re getting DDOSed continuously.”

Grinding Gear Games has, in response, gotten rid of server hosts that couldn’t deal with the problem and added DDOS protection to those that remain. “By the time we do the 0.3.0 launch,” he said, “everything should have DDOS protection in front of it. We’ve done a lot of work in this area. Right now the servers shouldn’t be having any problems because all of that infrastructure’s in place, so as far as I’m concerned, that problem should be fixed.”

The other urgent piece of news concerns a free weekend for Path of Exile 2, which will coincide with the Third Edict update on 29th August. For that weekend, you won’t need the £24 Starter Pack in order to play. And I heartily recommend you do play.

Now, to the Third Edict update. The long-awaited fourth act of the game – the penultimate act – takes place across a Polynesian kind of archipelago which you can sail around in any order you please. There are eight islands, 16 new areas, 12 new bosses and more than 100 new monster types. And when you’re done with them, instead of being funnelled back to replaying the existing acts, as you are currently, you will now play new interlude acts. Three of them. These are bespoke versions of the existing acts designed to offer a new experience, meaning yet more new areas and bosses and ideas. But these are temporary; when Act 5 does arrive, they will go.

The big change to Support Gems comes via removing the restriction of having one Support Gem type per character, and from introducing higher tiers of them. There’s also a brand new kind of uber Support Gem called a Lineage Support, which drops from bosses and has the power and potential to redefine your entire character build.

Sprinting is available to all classes and lets you hold down a button to get to places quicker and to outrun enemies, which sounds useful, but if you’re hit while sprinting you will be knocked down, so there’s some risk to it.

The myriad class changes are too exhaustive to list, but every class has been looked at and quite significantly altered and buffed. Arguably the most important addition, I say completely without bias as a monk player, is the ability for monks to fight with their bare hands, rather than with a staff, courtesy of the new Hollow Palm Technique. Thank you Grinding Gear Games.

The new, fully asynchronous trade system, meanwhile, gives you a personal merchant – a nice lady called Ange – who’ll stand in your hideout and sell your wares for you. Your items will be listed on the trade website and when someone wants them, it will teleport them directly to your Ange who’ll sell to them, even when you’re not around.

The crafting changes have made it easier to transform and augment items into super-items. Essences and orbs have been reworked and higher tiers of them added, and there’s a brand new Exceptional base item to collect and apply all these juicy bonuses too.

Elsewhere, blocking and parrying have been reworked, more passive skills have been added to the already ridiculous passive tree – and passives with interesting abilities at that, not just percentage bonuses – plus attribute requirements for items have been lowered by a quarter across the board.

On top of all that we’re getting the game’s first seasonal League – the hope is to have one with each major update – called Rise of the Abyssal. This places you (a new you, I think) in a world plagued by abyssal invaders, and has you closing fissures and pits to the abyss that appear. It’s got some clever procedural ideas about the kinds of boss creatures that crawl out of the pits, and there’s the chance of finding a pit you can jump into, which will lead you to an abyssal city.

In other words: there’s a lot, and there’s more I haven’t covered here. It’s a significant effort by Grinding Gear Games to about-turn mixed recent reactions to the game. We’ll have to wait and see if it works.
