Nintendo Didn’t Tease A New 3D Mario During September’s Direct

by admin September 13, 2025

Today was the first big Nintendo Direct to happen since the company launched the Switch 2 earlier this year. 2025 is also the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. So I was excited that the pre-recorded event started with a whole section dedicated to Mario. And then I was very sad.

Super Mario Odyssey launched all the way back in 2017 as a very early Switch game. And it was great. A truly wonderful 3D platformer. There wasn’t a more perfect time than today for Nintendo to announce the next mainline 3D Mario game. But that didn’t happen.

Instead, Mario’s dad, Shigeru Miyamoto, came out and talked about a marathon, some ticket designs, a theme park, a lightshow, an art museum, and then revealed the first look at the new Mario movie. I’d be fine with all that, except after showing off The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Miyamoto said this:

“The movie will be the main event of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary event.”

Oh… well, uh, I guess that’s one way to celebrate video gaming’s most iconic character. And don’t worry, Chris Pratt is back to voice him.

The rest of the section dedicated to Mario’s 40th Anniversary was a bit better. Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 are coming to Switch and Switch 2. Super Mario Wonder is getting a Switch 2 upgrade and new co-op modes. And Mario Tennis Fever was revealed.

But then, Nintendo had one more announcement. Finally, it was time to end this section all about Mario’s big milestone with the thing we all wanted. And then Nintendo announced… a (very cute-looking) Yoshi game.

Welp, I guess no 3D Mario game is coming anytime soon. That’s a shame. And while I understand that Donkey Kong Bananza likely is the reason, and that game is awesome and I love it, I can’t help but feel like Mario’s 40th anniversary event was a dud.

Call the police. Call the Mushroom Kingdom’s law enforcement agency. Put out a missing person report. Mario is missing folks, for real this time, lost in the ever-expanding ambitions of Nintendo, a company once dedicated to games, that now has its fingers in so many other things.

Silksong Tops September’s Game Pass Offerings

by admin September 2, 2025

Microsoft has announced the first half of September’s Game Pass additions, and it won’t surprise you to learn that Hollow Knight: Silksong is the headline entry. Team Cherry’s long-delayed Metroidvania is finally coming out September 4, which still doesn’t feel real, but to drive the point home Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will have access the moment the game is launched. But don’t let it entirely distract you from some other ace titles, including I Am Your Beast and Nine Sols.

People were already shocked to discover that Hollow Knight: Silksong would only cost $20, but for those who hadn’t been paying close attention, there’s a new round of delighted surprise to come when they realize they might not have to pay anything extra at all. The wildly anticipated game is coming to the Game Pass Ultimate tier, as well as to PC Game Pass, September 4 at the same time it goes on sale everywhere else.

But there are games to play before then. Right now, you can get started with 2024’s I Am Your Beast, the “shortform covert revenge thriller FPS” that proved enormously well-liked on Steam last year. Then, September 3 you’ve got 2024’s acclaimed Nine Sols, a 2D action-platformer from Red Candle Games, who previously released the excellent horror titles Detention and Devotion.

Joining Silksong on September 4 on PC is Cataclismo, a city builder and strategy game where you create your castles brick by brick, which reviewed extremely well when it came out in May.

On September 10 your kids will want the controllers with the return of PAW Patrol World, and on September 16 we’re getting simulator RoadCraft, another May release that hasn’t proved quite such a smash.

Here’s the full list:

Out now

  • I Am Your Beast (Cloud, PC, Xbox X/S) – Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Game Pass Standard

Sept 3

  • Nine Sols (Xbox X/S) – Game Pass Standard

Sept 4

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong (Cloud, Console, PC) – Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass
  • Cataclismo (PC) – Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass

Sept 10

  • PAW Patrol World (Cloud, Console, PC) – Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Game Pass Standard

Sept 16

  • RoadCraft (Cloud, Xbox X/S) – Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Standard

Meanwhile, three games are off on September 15. They are:

  • All You Need Is Help (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Wargroove 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • We Love Katamari Reroll+ Royal Reverie (Cloud, Console, and PC)

by admin September 2, 2025

If you are yet to play Stardew Valley, now is the time really. Last year, solo developer Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone released Stardew Valley’s bumper 1.6 update, which essentially boosted the game to an almost 2.0 status, introducing a vast number of features to the base game such as new NPC dialogues, home renovations and turtle pets. The developer also recently announced another surprise update, despite saying he was going to hold off until his next game – Haunted Chocolatier – was released.

Psychonauts 2, meanwhile, comes from the always creative minds at Double Fine, and was met with overwhelming praise on its release. Edwin Evans-Thirlwell called it “witty, eccentric and imaginative” in Eurogamer’s own review, noting it had a “more developed understanding of mental health” than its predecessor.

Lastly, we have Viewfinder, which is a puzzle game that asks players to “challenge perception, redefine reality, and reshape the world” all with an instant camera. Chris Donlan called it all “magical” in Eurogamer’s Viewfinder feature.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.
