Shinobi: Art Of Vengeance Is Getting Sega Guest DLC, Including Sonic’s Eggman

by admin August 19, 2025

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is due out later this month, and now Sega has announced a fun if surprising bit of DLC that’s coming “early 2026.” Dubbed the Sega Villains Stage, details are still pretty light on the DLC, but Sonic the Hedgehog’s Dr. Eggman is set to appear as a boss fight. Alongside that, protagonist Joe Musashi will have two other guest villains to take on, though they are yet to be revealed. If you’re picking up the digital deluxe edition of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, you’ll automatically unlock it whenever the DLC does arrive next year.

Sega also announced that Young Dirty Bastard (YDB), i.e. the son of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard from Wu-Tang Clan, is releasing a song called The Path Has Just Begun inspired by the Shinobi series. It’ll be released on streaming services this week, August 21, and you can expect a new trailer for the game on the same day.

Now Playing: Shinobi: Art of Vengeance – Announcement Trailer

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance was teased back at The Game Awards in 2023 before getting a proper reveal earlier this year, bringing the series back to its roots with 2D action-platforming. It’s also the first new game in the series since 2011’s Shinobi 3D, a 3DS title that received average reviews at the time. This new Shinobi game comes as part of a broader move by Sega to bring back some of its legacy titles that haven’t received a new entry in many years, like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. A movie adaptation of the Shinobi series is also in the works.

You’ll be able to pick up Shinobi: Art of Vengeance on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC when it launches on August 29.

Sega Sammy inadvertently posts internal sales data to its public website

Sega Sammy has inadvertently shared internal sales numbers publicly in a presentation posted to its investor relations website.

A table of sales – thought to have been hidden from public view – was archived online before Sega noticed the error and removed the document from its website.

The figures recounted sales of most of Sega Sammy’s gaming portfolio over the last five years, including Persona 5 Royal, Sonic Frontiers, and Team Sonic Racing, which have sold 7.25m, 4.57m, and 3.5m copies, respectively.

Sega to open new store in Tokyo, Japan

by admin June 23, 2025

Sega has confirmed plans to open a flagship store in Tokyo, Japan.

The publisher shared the news on social media, but didn’t specify where in Tokyo the new store will be located.

VGC previously reported that Sega Store Tokyo is expected to open in Shibuya Parco – a department store complex that also houses Capcom Store Tokyo, Pokémon Center Shibuya, and Nintendo Tokyo.

It highlighted that visitors had noticed construction signage in the complex with Sega’s font suggesting the arrival of the store.

Sega’s head of global transmedia Justin Scarpone told VGC last year that the store was set to open in summer 2025, and that another will open in Shanghai, China.

“One of the core things about our transmedia team is we are really focused on elevating and strengthening the Sega brand,” said Scarpone.

“If you go to retail today, you don’t see ‘Sega’ enough. For example, we’re opening a Sega store next summer in [Tokyo’s] Parco. We’re also going to be doing a similar project in Shanghai, where we’ll have a store there as well via a partner.”

He continued: “It’s really exciting and we need to do a lot more of that, because Sega is a consumer brand that is surprisingly not in front of customers enough. Sonic is, but Sega isn’t.”

VGC noted that Sega “generates nearly $1 billion in annual retail sales of toys, clothing, and merchandise alone”.

Sega just accidentally leaked its own sales numbers, and somehow Sonic Frontiers sold more than the last two mainline Yakuzas combined, but Persona 5’s putting the rest of the stable to shame

by admin June 22, 2025

First reported by VGC, Sega Sammy Holdings—Sega’s delightfully-named parent company—mistakenly uploaded sales numbers for 11 major games to a public page on the company website. ResetEra user –R uploaded the full table to the forum, allowing us to still peep those numbies after Sega took the original page down.

The original table charts earnings by fiscal year from 2020 to 2025, but for simplicity, here are the total units sold for each game across the entire span:

  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: 1.66 million
  • Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name: 960,000
  • Persona 3 Reload: 2.07 million
  • Sonic Superstars: 2.43 million
  • Sonic Frontiers: 4.57 million
  • Total War: Warhammer 3: 2.34 million
  • Shin Megami Tensei V: 2.11 million
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon: 2.86 million
  • Persona 5 Royal: 7.25 million
  • Team Sonic Racing: 3.50 million
  • Total War: Three Kingdoms: 3.21 million

The biggest surprise for me is how well Sonic games are selling to this day—possibly helped a great deal by the movies—as well as how slowly recent Yakuza/Like a Dragon games have sold by comparison. Sonic Frontiers moved almost as many units as Yakuza 7, Infinite Wealth, and The Man Who Erased His Name combined.

Frontiers is a game that seemed to come and go without much fanfare, while Like a Dragon appears to be at the height of its popularity. I wouldn’t worry about Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio or anything, though: Those are still strong showings, and the developer just cranks games out at an almost unheard-of pace for the 2020s game industry, more than making up for any one game’s relative lack of success.

Two more things stood out to me. First, nothing even comes close to Persona 5 Royal’s 7 million units sold, and this data doesn’t even account for Persona 5’s first three years of non-Royal circulation, likely putting its total north of 10 million.

Second are the notable omissions of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and especially Metaphor: ReFantazio. Both were perhaps excluded for having released too close to the end of Sega’s 2025 fiscal year, but Metaphor seems to have sold like gangbusters, and I’m very curious to know how it stacks up.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Sega reveals Sega Store Tokyo is on the way

by admin June 21, 2025

Sega is launching a new store in Tokyo, Japan: Sega Store Tokyo.

Sega didn’t share any specifics when it announced the news on social media, but the new store is expected to open in Shibuya’s Parco department complex, near the official Capcom store, a Pokémon Center, and Nintendo Tokyo, too.

The accompanying 18-second teaser doesn’t give much away, sadly, but Sega’s transmedia boss Justin Scarpone told VGC last year that it was time to put the Sega brand – and not just Sonic – “in front of consumers”.

“Our portfolio is very broad, but the common thread is the Sega brand,” Scaprone said at the time. “Sega already has a surprising amount of fandom as a brand, and we need to look after those fans and offer new experiences to them, while putting the stamp of Sega on it more proudly.

“It’s really exciting, and we need to do a lot more of that, because Sega is a consumer brand that is surprisingly not in front of consumers enough. Sonic is, but Sega isn’t.”

A second store is also expected to open in Shanghai, but as yet there’s no news of an expansion into Europe or America.

Alex recently caught up with Takashi Iizuka, the Sonic series producer who first worked on the franchise just two years into his career and has stuck with the blue blur for all these years.

Sega Throws Shade At Mario Kart During Sonic SGF Presentation

by admin June 7, 2025

Image: Sega

At today’s Summer Game Fest showcase, Sega showed off Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. The kart racer is a big ol’ crossover event between the blue blur and other Sega characters. After previous leaks claimed Minecraft and Spongebob characters would join the racer’s roster, Sega revealed that several of its own heroes are joining. Joker from Persona 5, Hatsune Miku, and Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza will all be off to the races, as well as Steve from Minecraft, who was hinted at in the leaks. That’s all well and good, but one of the funnier moments of the showcase was Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka taking the stage right after and throwing some light shade at Nintendo and Mario Kart World.

Iizuka made what was seemingly a dig at Mario Kart World during his presentation. He never says the game by name, but says that, “unlike another kart racing game,” Crossworlds has cross-platform multiplayer across PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Best Reveals From The Game Awards 2023

It’s a bold jab to make at the Switch 2 kart racer while everyone is hootin’ and hollerin’ about it just after the system’s launch this week. But it also feels like a fun wink and nod toward the companies’ old rivalry. Back when Sega was making its own consoles and competing directly with Nintendo, the company wasn’t afraid to throw a punch in its marketing. The Sega Genesis tagline “Sega does what Nintendon’t” is still iconic, though it didn’t really pan out for Sega in the long run, given the company is no longer in the console-making business.

Either way, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds does have that cross-platform flex over Mario Kart, which is a Switch 2 exclusive. Sonic and friends are racing on just about every platform, so it will be more widely accessible. That being said, Mario Kart World is probably going to have an unheard of attach rate, given it’s the system seller for the Switch 2 right now. Sega probably knows that and is just having some light fun.

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds launches on September 25.
