Wuchang: Fallen Feathers bosses made unkillable in latest patch, seemingly to appease Chinese outcry

by admin August 17, 2025

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers got its 1.5 Patch this week, bringing multiple quality-of-life improvements to the Soulslike, but also story and boss adjustments which appear to have been made to appease Chinese netizens.

The patch notes list all the details, which include features like faster healing animations and adjustments to invincibility frames when Wuchang stands up. But buried in the margins is the nebulous line: “Added dialogs for some NPCs to complete some plots. We will further optimize the exhaustion animations in the future to improve the plot performance.”

As reported by Kotaku and pointed out by YouTuber Lance McDonald, in practice this means that several key bosses, notably those associated with the Ming dynasty, no longer die after their bloodthirsty battles with Wuchang. Instead, they fall down in exhaustion and remain in the boss arena, occasionally offering up further dialogue if Wuchang speaks with them. In the case of famous general Zhao Yun, who existed during China’s Three Kingdoms period hundreds of years before the Ming dynasty and shows up as a surprise NPC and boss, the fight is reframed as a “trial” by his immortal soul designed to test Wuchang.

With this change comes the additional fact that certain enemies associated with the Ming dynasty, such as peasant loyalists and imperial guards, are no longer hostile. This significantly alters the game’s fourth region, Worship’s Rise in Ruins, which was full of these guys. Suddenly, the vast majority of that level’s foes are friendly, making it a cakewalk in comparison to its original stressful form.

These changes appear to have been made by developers Leenzee Games in response to critical voices from the Chinese internet which have lambasted the game since its release. According to these voices, the game paints the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD) in a poor light.

The Ming dynasty was the last to be led by ethnic Han Chinese, and the following Qing dynasty (1644-1912 AD) was ruled by the Manchu people. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers features a distinct lack of Manchu enemies, and instead several of the game’s 24 bosses include prominent real-world persons such as Zhu Youjian, the 17th and final ruler of the Ming who was known as the Chongzhen (meaning “auspicious”) Emperor. In-game, Zhu Youjian shows up as a mutated draconic version of himself obsessed with immortality and maintaining the Ming dynasty at all cost. As of Patch 1.5, Wuchang can no longer permanently kill Zhu Youjian, and he’s reframed as having been corrupted. Upon defeating him, it’s hinted that he goes off into seclusion with his consort instead of dying permanently.

Player response to Patch 1.5 on the English-speaking internet has largely been negative, with commentators on one of Wuchang’s two Subreddits reacting in surprise to still-alive bosses and pointing out the fact that their post-battle “exhausted” states seem unfinished (to be fair, the patch notes do state that these animations will be improved).

Amongst Chinese players, reception to Patch 1.5 has been mixed. Chinese-language Steam threads include discussions that Lenzee caved to an overly vocal minority, and suggestions that the game should give players the choice of battling Ming enemies rather than turning them into friendly NPCs.

Others have stressed that these alterations dilute the plot of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, which is rooted in the Buddhist concept of samsara, or cyclical change – a theme that is demonstrated by both the titular heroine’s motivations and the historical backdrop of the falling Ming dynasty. The second response in this thread puts it succinctly, stressing that the plot is about Wuchang letting go of her obsession with resurrecting her sister – a theme that is rendered moot by Zhu Youjian escaping death simply by virtue of being a Chinese emperor.

Personally, as someone who put 90 hours into Wuchang: Fallen Feathers for guides purposes and is half-Chinese (Taiwanese actually, but I won’t get into that here), I feel that the original outcry was unjustified and came from a select group of players who subscribe to ideas of Han Chinese supremacy. That said, I’m not surprised that Leenzee made these changes. Entities in Mainland China need to be more beholden to social pressure and patriotism to survive, and Leenzee Games invited scrutiny by featuring real-world figures and literally making the game’s Chinese title 明末, which can be translated as “Last days of the Ming”. I suspect they had a particular vision in mind, and they’ve now deemed it necessary to compromise on that vision in order to survive. It’s a shame, since the news of these tweaks has covered up the quality-of-life patch improvements that will make the game more enjoyable.

That said, if anyone wants to watch me stomp the immortal Zhao Yun with an fire axe build in only a little over two minutes, check out my boss guide.

Still Wakes The Deep developer The Chinese Room has seemingly made a small number of layoffs

by admin June 21, 2025

Still Wakes The Deep developer The Chinese Room appears to have made a small number of layoffs following the release of the BAFTA-winning game’s Siren’s Rest DLC this week.

A lighting artist and level designer from the studio have posted notices that they’re looking for work on LinkedIn over the past 48 hours (those posts are not linked here out of discretion, but have been verified by GamesIndustry.biz).

At a glance, around 10 staff with the studio listed as their current employer have the ‘looking for work’ label on their LinkedIn profiles – though this is not a reliable metric by itself.

When reached for clarification from GamesIndustry.biz, the studio did not confirm the number of layoffs, or directly confirm that layoffs had occurred.

It did, however, offer the following statement from studio director Ed Daly. “The Chinese Room will share news on changes for the studio in the coming weeks.”

The company is owned by Sumo Group, which in February announced it was refocusing its business on development services.

Still Wakes the Deep won three BAFTAs earlier this year, including two for performers Alec Newman and Karen Dunbar, and an award for New Intellectual Property.

A Roblox game about growing vegetables is seemingly now bigger than Fortnite

A Roblox game about growing vegetables is seemingly now bigger than Fortnite

by admin June 18, 2025

Everybody loves palpating their turnips; just look at the success of Stardew Valley and its ilk for proof of that. But it turns out people really love some vegetable action, if the staggering success of Roblox game Grow a Garden is any indication, given it’s seemingly smashed through Fortnite’s previous gargantuan record for most players at the same time.

Let’s break out some numbers. According to third-party monitoring tools, Grow a Garden – the specifics of which we’ll get to shortly – soared past 16m concurrent players this weekend on Roblox (16,411,769 to be exact). By way of comparison, Fortnite announced record-breaking concurrents of 15.3m players during its Marvel season finale event back in Covid-era 2020.

So what, you may be wondering, has garnered all this attention? Grow a Garden is, according to its official description from developer The Garden Game, very much what it sounds like. It’s a game of buying seeds, shoving them in the ground, then waiting for your blueberries, coconuts, daffodils etc. to grow – which they’ll happily do whether you’re in-game or offline.

After that, you can sell your massive produce for profit, purchasing more seeds or temporary boosts you’ll need to slowly craft in real-time, then start the whole cycle over again. Frankly, absolutely nothing about it sounds like the sort of thing that might capture the imagination of 16m players all at once, but then I’m not a 13-year-old looking to do something mindless online with my friends after school. Also, there’re Grow a Garden pets, so maybe that’s the appeal.

As to how Grow a Garden’s impressive 16m concurrent users stacks up with other games, PUBG currently holds the Steam record for most concurrent players, coming in at a comparatively paltry 3.3m, while it’s nearest rival, Black Myth: Wukong, barely squeaks over the 2.4m player threshold. In fact, Steam itself recently saw a concurrent high of 40m players, so Grow a Garden’s 16m looks positively gargantuan given we’re talking about a single game.

Whether all those players should be playing Roblox is another matter entirely, of course, given the game continues to be embroiled in controversy amid ongoing accusations of child safety failures. Developer Roblox Corporation last year announced a sweep of policy changes – including updated parental controls and the banning of social hangouts for children under 13 – in a belated effort to improve things. Currently, Roblox Corporation is being investigated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, possibly due to reports it previously misled investors by inflating player numbers, although the reason hasn’t been made public.

Rumored Persona 4 Remake Seemingly Confirmed By Voice Actor

Rumored Persona 4 Remake Seemingly Confirmed By Voice Actor

by admin May 28, 2025

Persona 4 voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, who has voiced the character of Yosuke in every Persona 4 game and project, announced on social media that he wouldn’t be returning in the upcoming Persona 4 remake, despite asking if he could come back. Funny thing, though: Atlus and Sega haven’t actually announced a remake of Persona 4 yet.

6 Things To Know Before Starting Persona 5 Tactica

OK, so while a remake of the 2008 PS2 RPG Persona 4 has yet to be officially confirmed, there have been a lot of rumors and speculation floating around the web about such a project. But it’s all been leakers and insiders sharing tidbits and possible information, nothing concrete. However, with a famous voice actor from the original game talking openly about the project and implying that it might have recast some characters, it seems the cat is out of the bag, even if Sega and Atlus didn’t plan on that happening.

On May 28, Lowenthal posted on BlueSky—in response to fans asking him about the remake and his return—saying that he wasn’t coming back despite possibly begging Atlus to return.

“And for those who keep asking, no, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake,” posted Lowenthal, who also voices Spider-Man in the Insomniac games on PS4/PS5. “I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.”

Kotaku has reached out to Sega and Atlus for more information about the remake and the recasting.

The last big Persona remake, Persona 3 Reload, did recast the main group of characters. While the decision was controversial at the time, many praised the new voice acting in the RPG. So it seems that Atlus might be doing the same thing again, assuming Persona 4 remake is real and happening. And it wouldn’t be the first time: Persona 4 was previously partially remastered and improved. That version of the game, Persona 4 Golden, was then ported to Vita in 2012 and consoles and PC in 2020.

As for why Lowenthal, a famous voice actor with a long career in the industry, would seemingly leak a project ahead of an official announcemen? Well, perhaps the rumors have been swirling for so long that he forgot it wasn’t actually official yet. Or maybe he was grumpy about not being cast.

Stellar Blade 2 is official and seemingly not too far away

by admin May 21, 2025

Developer Shift Up has quietly announced its acclaimed sci-fi hack-and-slash adventure Stellar Blade is getting a sequel – and it looks like it’s due to arrive before the end of next year.

Shift Up shared the news as part of its recent investor presentation, tucking mention of a Stellar Blade sequel away on a slide highlighting its “IP expansion” plans for 2025 and 2026. The studio’s free-to-play sci-fi shooter Goddess of Victory: Nikke got a mention, as did the mysterious “Project Witches”, but it’s Stellar Blade we’re interested in here.

Two key developments were listed under the Stellar Blade header: firstly, a “platform expansion”, which seems likely to be a reference to the game’s imminent arrival on PC – a release Shift Up has extremely high hopes for. And then next to that, an unassuming second blue box tagged with the all-important word “sequel”.

Some of the features coming to Stellar Blade on PC.Watch on YouTube

Shift Up’s sequel announcement didn’t come with any specific details, but one interesting takeaway is the timeline the studio looks to be working on. According to Shift Up’s slide, Stellar Blade 2 is due to launch before 2027, strongly suggesting the developer is targeting a 2026 release – less than two years after the launch of the first game. That feels like a remarkably swift turnaround time for a fully fledged AAA sequel.

Hopefully, though, Stellar Blade 2 can live up to the standard set by its acclaimed predecessor, which was awarded four stars in Eurogamer’s review. “Stellar Blade has a fair bit of weirdness,” Jessica Orr wrote, “but its killer tunes and vibey, flow-state combat – plus a transformative hard mode – are enough to leave you entranced.”

PC players can pick up Stellar Blade via Steam or Epic when it launches on 11th June. Additionally, a Complete Edition arrives for PC and PlayStation 5 on the same day, bundling together the base game, various cosmetics for protagonist EVE, and more. PC players should note, however, Stellar Blade is currently blocked in over 120 countries, which seems to have surprised Shift Up as much as everyone else. Over the weekend, the studio said it was “closely discussing the region lock issue” with Sony in the hope of finding a solution before 11th June.

LEGO seemingly shuts down Bionicle fan game after 8 years of development, because as we all know Bionicle is a scorching hot IP that the company is doing a lot with right now

by admin May 20, 2025

Bionicle: Masks of Power – a fan game that has been in development for eight years – has been shut down following a request from The LEGO Group, its developers claim.

In a statement released to the public via a Google Doc, the team broke down the situation for fans who’ve been waiting to actually play the game after all this time. The devs, who were preparing to drop a demo this August, claim that LEGO reached out to request they shut down development on the project and remove the game from the public eye.

In the statement, the team expressed its historical intention to keep in line with the official LEGO Fair Play Guidelines, as to not draw the eye of an legal action from LEGO looking to protect its copyright. Despite these intentions, the hammer has seemingly come down. While it says no official reason for the takedown was given, the team suspects that it was because the average person may mistake the game for an official game, rather than a fan project. It seems this fan game was a victim of its own good SEO.

In reaction to the news, the development team has released a walkthrough of the demo, and has decided to form a new indie studio: Unmasked Games. That name is great by the way, hinting towards its Bionicle roots but taking the mask off for future endeavors. They conclude the statement with the following: “This has been heartbreaking news for our entire team, but we’re also incredibly excited about what the future has in store, and for what we’ll get the chance to create next. We hope that you’re all just as excited as we are. For the final time… May the Great Spirit guide you.”

Bionicle has been a dead IP product line since 2010 by the way. That’s the last time any actual toys were produced by The LEGO group. There was a series of comics written by Greg Farshtey, though that has also been dead for over a decade. It’s clear that the Bionicle IP is scorching hot, something LEGO is clearly doing a lot with. Sarcasm aside, such are the ways of legal departments. IP must be protected, even for IP that has had no development or frankly relevancy for over a decade. That is, aside from a relatively small community of fans who were, until very recently, excited for a new fan game. Damn shame!

It’s a bummer. It’s a common belief that the best way to approach making fan games is to “shut the f**k up”, but obviously not all fan project teams have the luxury of silence and a sudden shadow drop before any cease and desist can come through and ruin all the fun. Still, if you were excited for Mask of Power, why not give the folks at Unmasked Games some love, and support them going forward.

We’ve reached out to The LEGO Group for comment, and will update this article if and when we get a response.

When’s the last time you even thought about Bionicle, this fan game aside? Let us know below.

Nintendo Switch 2’s Game Chat will seemingly support both live subtitles and text-to-speech

by admin May 20, 2025

Nintendo Switch 2 will seemingly support both live subtitling and text-to-speech.

While not formally confirmed by Nintendo marketing, videos showing off the features popped up over the weekend. The first illustrates how a player can type messages into Game Chat and have the recipient hear the message aloud at their end of the exchange.

We’ve also seen a separate video showing Game Chat transcribing a live discussion and providing a transcription on the side of the screen.

It’s thought the system will, like its predecessor, also support USB keyboards but again, this has yet to be officially confirmed.

However, while Game Chat will be free for all users from release day until March 31, 2026, after that date players will require a Switch Online subscription, which means these accessibility features may potentially be locked behind the premium subscription. GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Nintendo for clarification.

Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to release on June 5. Last week, Nintendo said it was committed to making its products “as obtainable as we possibly can” amidst fluctuating market conditions due to the US tariffs.
