Theta Capital is Seeking $200M for its Blockchain Fund-of-Funds

by admin September 27, 2025

Theta Capital Management, an investment firm based in Amsterdam, is looking to raise $200 million for its newest blockchain fund-of-funds in 2025. The new fund, called Theta Blockchain Ventures V, will back between 10 and 15 venture firms that specialize in digital assets,

According to a report from Bloomberg, a spokesperson from Theta confirmed the fundraising plans and said the goal is to deliver a net return of 25%.

All this is coming at a time when venture capital in crypto space is slow even as prices of tokens push higher. In the second quarter of 2025, just $1.7 billion was allocated across 21 crypto-focused venture funds, according to data from Galaxy Digital.

This is far below the amounts raised during past bull markets when money poured into blockchain projects at a faster pace. Galaxy also reported that the rise in artificial intelligence has taken some attention away from crypto investments.

It also noted that spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and treasury products are now competing for institutional money, which has reduced the flow of capital to venture funds.

Theta’s Track Record in Blockchain

Theta has built experience in this space over several years. The company was founded in 2001 but shifted its focus to digital assets in 2018. Today, it manages about $1.2 billion in assets.

Earlier this year, it closed another fundraising round worth about $170 million and has built a track record across five earlier blockchain vehicles. From January 2018 through December 2024, those funds returned a net IRR of 32.7%, according to materials shared with investors.

The firm’s blockchain portfolio includes some of the biggest names in the industry. Pantera Capital, CoinFund, Polychain Capital, and Dragonfly are among the venture firms backed by Theta in earlier funds. These managers are active in many parts of the digital asset market, including decentralized finance projects, blockchain infrastructure, and token-based startups.

If the new fundraising succeeds, the $200 million raise will mark the sixth fund under Theta’s blockchain series.

Tencent accuses Sony of seeking a “monopoly on genre conventions” as it responds to Light of Motiram copyright lawsuit

by admin September 18, 2025

Tencent is disputing Sony’s claims that its upcoming game Light of Motiram is a “slavish clone” of its tentpole Horizon series, claiming the latter is not “fighting off piracy, plagiarism, or any genuine threat to intellectual property” but is instead attempting to “transform ubiquitous genre ingredients into proprietary assets.”

Back in July, Sony filed a copyright lawsuit against Tencent. In court papers filed at the time, Sony demanded a jury trial for copyright and trademark infringement and to prevent the “imminent” release of Tencent’s upcoming title, accusing it of “rip[ping] off” Horizon lead Aloy, “deliberatedly causing numerous game lovers to confuse Light of Motiram as the next game in the Horizon series with encountering Tencent’s promotional game play videos and social media accounts.” Shortly thereafter, Tencent made several changes to Light of Motiram’s Steam page and its promotional art.

Now, as spotted by The Game Post, Tencent claims Light of Motiram is merely making use of “time-honored” tropes that are outside “Sony’s exclusive domain,” calling Sony’s copyright claims “startling.”

“Plaintiff Sony has sued a grab-bag of Tencent companies – and ten unnamed defendants – about the unreleased video game Light of Motiram, alleging that the game copies elements from Sony’s game Horizon Zero Dawn and its spinoffs,” Tencent’s lawyers wrote.

“At bottom, Sony’s effort is not aimed at fighting off piracy, plagiarism, or any genuine threat to intellectual property. It is an improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture and declare it Sony’s exclusive domain.”

The court papers further assert that Horizon Zero Dawn’s art director, Jan-Bart Van Beek, suggested in a documentary that the game’s premise was not original, and referenced 2013’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

“Long before this lawsuit was filed, the developers of Horizon Zero Dawn publicly acknowledged that the very same game elements that, today, Sony claims to own exclusively, were in fact borrowed from an earlier game.

“Sony’s Complaint tellingly ignores these facts. Instead, it tries to transform ubiquitous genre ingredients into proprietary assets,” Tencent added. “By suing over an unreleased project that merely employs the same time-honored tropes embraced by scores of other games released both before and after Horizon — like Enslaved, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Far Cry: Primal, Far Cry: New Dawn, Outer Wilds, Biomutant, and many more — Sony seeks an impermissible monopoly on genre conventions.”

Tencent also dismissed Sony’s claims its representatives pitched a Horizon mobile game at GDC in 2024, and states Sony is suing the wrong companies as “none of the served defendants develop and market the Light of Motiram video game that Sony alleges infringes its intellectual property in the Horizon franchise.” It also claimed that it cannot be sued for a game that has a release window of Q4 2027 and not yet released.

The shockingly small Mini SSD threatens microSD dominance yet depends on Biwin seeking SDA or PCI-SIG approval to succeed worldwide

by admin September 14, 2025

  • Biwin Mini SSD risks obscurity without SDA or PCI-SIG standard approval
  • SanDisk’s early SDA submission made microSD a universal storage success
  • Mini SSD hits 3,700MB/s reads, crushing MicroSD Express’s 985MB/s ceiling

Chinese storage maker Biwin has introduced the “Mini SSD,” a format far smaller than a US penny yet offering capacities up to 2TB.

Measuring just 15mm x 17mm and 1.4mm thick, it targets laptops, tablets, phones, and cameras.

Sequential read speeds are listed at 3,700MB/s with writes at 3,400MB/s through a PCIe 4×2 connection, placing it closer to full-size SD Express performance than traditional microSD speeds.

Why universal standards matter for adoption

Despite achieving such speed, Mini SSD may never reach its full potential unless Biwin follows SanDisk’s example.

When SanDisk launched microSD in 2005, then called T-Flash, it promptly submitted the format to the Secure Digital Association (SDA), the industry body overseeing SD card standards.

That move enabled “a ton of companies” to manufacture compatible cards, cementing microSD’s near-universal adoption.

Without taking a similar step, Biwin’s format risks remaining exclusive and failing to gain widespread support.

To truly replace microSD, Biwin must submit the Mini SSD to either the SDA or PCI-SIG, the two leading organizations currently setting removable storage standards.

If it is adopted, members of both SDA and PCI-SIG could then seriously consider this SSD for their devices.

Mini SSD has strong potential; it is faster than microSD Express cards, which top out at about 985MB/s, and can match SD Express cards at 3,940MB/s, which are nearly twice the size.

The Mini SSD’s slot functions like a SIM tray, allowing users to eject it with a pin, making swaps or upgrades straightforward.

It boasts IP68 water and dust resistance and can withstand three-meter drops, qualities that might suit mobile hardware exposed to rough handling.

While this may not be the fastest external SSD on the market, its tiny form makes it relevant for space-conscious and highly portable devices.

Currently, M.2 drives remain quicker, with some reaching 14,000MB/s, and still dominate the largest SSD category, although Mini SSD is closing the gap with portability.

Two Chinese gaming handheld consoles, the GPD Win 5 and OneNetbook’s OneXPlayer Super X hybrid, have already adopted dedicated Mini SSD slots.

The Cyberpunk 2077 team is seeking “brave netrunners” for something on 4th September, but won’t say what it is

by admin September 1, 2025

The Cyberpunk 2077 team is teasing something for this Thursday, 4th September.

A rather mysterious post has popped up on social media from President Rosalind Myers (that is to say, Cyberpunk 2077’s president of the New United States of America and former CEO of Militech).

“Our great nation is once again facing a mounting cybersecurity threat – from those who hide in the shadows, too cowardly to publicly proclaim their beliefs, who are viciously determined to tear down our flag and the values it upholds,” the post begins. “I will not accept this, and I know you won’t either.”

The Cyberpunk 2077 directive then asks netrunners brave enough (so, you and me) to “join our efforts” to overcome “this grave threat”.

The message from the president closes with the call to “take our recruitment test” and “prove yourself” by serving the NUSA. It doesn’t actually have a link or anything to take you to a recruitment test, though, but given it is all predated as a note from 4th September, I am going to say this will change on Thursday. I wonder if the threat is Team Cherry… (I jest of course).

Some in the comments have suggested a new game plus mode could be on its way, while others are hoping for more content for Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC. What do you hope the Cyberpunk 2077 team is teasing?

Blizzard's Diablo team forms union seeking protection in wake of Microsoft layoffs

Blizzard’s Diablo team forms union seeking protection in wake of Microsoft layoffs

by admin August 30, 2025

Blizzard’s Diablo team is the latest group of Microsoft workers to form a union, with over 450 developers voting in favour of representation with the Communications Workers of America.

The decision follows mass layoffs at Microsoft back in June, with workers at the company seeking fair compensation, job security, and an opportunity to improve workplace conditions.

Other unions formed by Microsoft workers include Blizzard’s story and franchise development team, as well as employees at ZeniMax Media and Raven Software. There are now over 3,500 employees at Microsoft in CWA organised unions.

“With every subsequent round of mass layoffs, I’ve witnessed the dread in my coworkers grow stronger because it feels like no amount of hard work is enough to protect us,” said Kelly Yeo, a game producer on Diablo and organising committee member. “I am overjoyed that we have formed a union – this is just the first step for us joining a movement spreading across an industry that is tired of living in fear. We are ready to begin fighting for real change alongside our Diablo colleagues.”

The union includes developers, artists, designers, engineers, and support staff working across the Diablo franchise.

“My entire career as a developer has seen my peers and I paying the ‘passion tax’ for working in an industry that we love,” said Nav Bhatti, a senior software engineer and organising committee member. “At some point you have to choose between fight or flight, and forming a union is us doing just that – standing our ground in the industry.”

“Diablo workers are the latest to show that California has become a hub for video game worker organising,” said CWA local 9510 president Jason Justice. “What’s happening here is part of a much larger story about turning the tide in an industry that has long overlooked its labour. Entertainment workers across film, television, music, and now video games are standing together to have a seat at the table. The strength of our movement comes from that solidarity.”

Eurogamer recently spoke to members of Blizzard’s story and franchise development team about their union, discussing their demands from Microsoft.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is getting a new ‘high difficulty mode’ in September, including an ‘endless battle for those seeking even greater thrills’

by admin August 28, 2025

Back in 2024, as the soulslike difficulty discourse once again reared its silly head, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki said FromSoft “could just crank the difficulty down,” but warned that doing so “would break the game itself.” That doesn’t seem to be a concern going the other direction, though, as Bandai Namco says a new “high-difficulty challenge mode” called Deep of Night is coming to Elden Ring: Nightreign in September.

Now, before we get too far into this, I know, Elden Ring and Elden Ring: Nightreign are two very different experiences: One an almost entirely solo soulslike, the other a co-op focused extraction game. So the analogy isn’t exact—difficulty becomes less of a pressing issue when you’re travelling with your own personal Let Me Solo Her—but even so I find the whole “We can’t go down, but we can sure as hell go up” approach quite funny.

Anyway, Deep of Night is “designed for seasoned players who have navigated through the Night many times,” Bandai said. Enemies will be stronger than in other modes, and players won’t be able to target specific Nightlords when they set out—you’ll get who you get, and good luck to you.

Related articles

“Ongoing terrain changes are not reflected,” Bandai said, which I assume means Shifting Earth modifiers are off the table, and there will be new items exclusive to the Deep of Night mode, including “Depths Relics” and weapons with multiple new—”but also detrimental”—effects. Hey, the Nightlord giveth, and the Nightlord taketh away.

“‘Deep of Night’ is a high-difficulty mode that provides a thrilling and challenging adventure,” Bandai wrote. “We encourage you to try and see if you can surpass Depth 3.” If you do, Depths 4 and 5 “will feature an endless battle for those seeking even greater thrills.” Deep of Night’s difficulty will increase as you descend, but will also “fluctuate based on wins and losses,” Bandai said.

If all of this is ringing a bell, it’s likely because you read about some Nightreign datamining earlier this month that uncovered information on the Deep of Night mode, including that it will have five “depths,” each with 999 ratings—a system seemingly similar to the one FromSoft used for Armor Core 6.

How exactly it will all work out in practice remains to be seen, but players will find out soon enough: Nightreign’s Deep of Night mode is set to go live on September 11.
