North Korean Hackers Hit Crypto Sector With BeaverTail Malware

by admin September 21, 2025

  • How it works
  • Growing threat

According to a recent report by The Hacker News, North Korean hackers are attempting to trick non-developer job applicants within the cryptocurrency sector with the BeaverTail malware, which steals logins and crypto wallets, and InvisibleFerret.

Both macOS and Windows users should avoid strange downloads from GitHub or Vercel as well as suspicious scripts.

How it works

Unfortunate applicants who fall for the sham run “fix” commands that disguise bogus microphone or camera errors when recording a short video on a fake website created by the attackers. This is a common trick used by North Koreans, which should be automatically treated as a red flag.

With the help of the aforementioned commands, the attackers then run a payload that installs BeaverTail and InvisibleFerret as a bundle.

What is notable is that North Korean attackers used to target primarily tech-savvy developers with BeaverTail, but they have now changed their targets. The new version is a ready-to-run program, meaning that it is no longer necessary for JavaScript or Python to be installed on the victim’s machines.

The usage of harmless-looking decoy files also makes it more challenging for security tools to actually detect them. Some parts of the malware are also hidden in password-protected files.

Growing threat

The recent malware has been linked to North Korean attackers since BeaverTail was previously used by them. Moreover, some IPs are associated with the hermit kingdom.

As reported by U.Today, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to warn about North Korean hackers posing as job candidates, potential employers, and users.

Crypto Exchange OKX Moves Into Australia’s Self-Managed Super Fund Sector

by admin September 15, 2025

OKX is making a push into Australia’s retirement market, despite crypto still being a notably small component.

On Sunday, the exchange announced the launch of a platform for self-managed superannuation funds, or SMSFs.

These private retirement vehicles allow individuals and small groups to manage their own savings directly, offering an alternative to the industry and retail funds that still dominate Australia’s pension system.

“Adoption is already far higher than many realise: SMSF crypto holdings have grown seven times since 2021, with $1.7 billion (US$1.1 billion) to $1.8 billion (US$1.2 billion) now invested,” Kate Cooper, CEO of OKX Australia, told Decrypt.

Cooper said OKX developed the platform in consultation with trustees and industry professionals, with features such as custody, multi-signature security, and proof-of-reserves reporting across 22 tokens.

“This isn’t about chasing a trend; it’s about providing serious infrastructure for SMSF trustees choosing to include digital assets in their portfolios. Australian SMSF trustees manage more money than most sovereign wealth funds. They deserve enterprise-level solutions,” she added.

OKX claims the new expansion is designed to give both individual and corporate trustees a straightforward path to adding crypto to retirement portfolios.

It adds infrastructure that specifically addresses SMSF requirements, including end-of-year reporting for audits, compliance checks, and AUSTRAC-registered exchange services.

Digital assets have become the fastest-growing slice of superannuation, with SMSF crypto allocations up 746% between March 2020 and March 2025, according to data from OKX’s statement. Overall, SMSFs manage nearly a third of Australia’s $4 trillion retirement pool.

Fresh data from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority shows total SMSF assets grew only 5.5% in the year to June 2025, suggesting that while digital asset allocations within those funds have surged from a low base five years ago, the broader pool of SMSF savings is expanding at a much slower pace.

Earlier this month, an Australian Tax Office report showed self-managed super funds held about A$3 billion (US$1.9 billion) in crypto at midyear, which is less than 0.3% of their assets and an even smaller share of the country’s A$4.3 trillion pension system.

SMSFs remained heavily weighted toward shares, cash, and property, with crypto allocations steady after a brief spike in early 2024, per the report.

At the time, observers noted that investors “missed the rally” by stepping back after that peak, aligning with how SMSFs remain a cautious investment product even as Asia-Pacific crypto volumes surged roughly 69% over the same period.

Still, Cooper said OKX expects to see “thousands of SMSFs onboard in the next 12 to 24 months,” with many of them switching from other exchanges.

PEPE Slips as Whale Offloads $4.8M Stake, Still Outperforms Memecoin Sector

by admin September 1, 2025

Popular memecoin PEPE dropped roughly 1% as a major token holder sent 500 billion tokens valued around $4.8 million to Binance, adding selling pressure to the token.

The move comes amid a 40-day downtrend that cost the trader roughly $450,000. Tokens are often transferred to accounts on exchanges in preparation for an impending sale. The token most recently traded at $0.00000992, according to market data, bouncing from earlier lows near $0.00000938. Prices swung within a 6% range before recovering toward resistance at $0.00000983.

The whale, according to blockchain data, is still holding onto 1.5 trillion PEPE tokens worth more than $14 million.

More than 3.26 trillion PEPE tokens changed hands during the session, with the strongest volumes recorded during the recovery phase, according to CoinDesk Research’s technical analysis data model.

After dipping to the session’s low, PEPE rebounded sharply as buyers stepped in at support levels. That surge lifted the price close to an intraday peak.

The market responded to the transfer with sustained buying interest, a sign of confidence or opportunistic accumulation. Still, bearish pressure hasn’t vanished. Resistance remains firm just below $0.00001, and price action continues to test support levels.

Nansen data supports the case for opportunity accumulation, as it shows that PEPE whales on Ethereum added 1.46% to their holdings over the past 30 days.

PEPE is outperforming the broader memecoin market. As measured by the CoinDesk Memecoin Index (CDMEME), the sector lost almost 3% of its value over the past 24 hours, more than PEPE’s near 1% decline.

Iran’s Crypto Sector Suffers 11% Decline Following $90-M Exchange Hack

by admin August 28, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

According to reports, Iran’s on-chain crypto activity fell sharply in the first half of 2025. Inflows totaled $3.7 billion in the first seven months, a 10% drop from the same period in 2024. The slump accelerated after April: June flows contracted 50% year-on-year and July tumbled 75%.

Major Exchange Breach Shakes Trust

Based on a TRM Labs report, a major security breach hit Nobitex on June 18. Roughly $90 million was taken from hot wallets, source code was leaked, and some stolen coins were steered to vanity addresses that referenced the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Outflows from the exchange spiked — more than 150% in the week before the fighting — as traders moved funds to what they saw as safer places. Trust, already fragile, was seriously damaged.

Inbound Transactions Collapse As Users Withdraw

Nobitex’s inbound transfers dropped by about 70% year-on-year after the breach. Some dormant Bitcoin wallets tied to mining activity were activated and later routed funds into a newly created hot wallet.

Regulators responded by imposing overnight trading curbs designed to slow panic, but many users had already pulled funds offshore. Reports show a surge in transfers to foreign platforms and payment processors that have lighter identity checks.

Stablecoin Freezes Strain Liquidity

In July, Tether froze 42 wallets linked to Iran, removing a large chunk of usable stablecoin liquidity on local rails. More than half of those wallets had ties, on-chain, to Nobitex or addresses flagged with IRGC links, though ownership remains unclear.

Tether also froze $27 million in USDT tied to Garantex, a sanctioned Russian exchange, an action that highlights the broad reach of compliance moves. The US Treasury blacklisted Garantex in 2022, and that prior action has had echoing effects on market behavior.

Power Cuts And Conflict Worsen Market Stress

The decline in flows came during a period of heightened regional tension. A 12-day conflict with Israel erupted in mid-June while nuclear talks stalled. Israeli strikes and internal disruptions led to widespread electricity outages.

Mining rigs were idled. Trading became harder. For many traders, the safest option was to move funds off domestic rails; for others it was to switch stablecoins or chains.

New Taxes Tighten The Grip

In August, Iran approved the Law on Taxation of Speculation and Profiteering. The law brings capital gains taxes to crypto, gold, real estate, and forex.

Enforcement will roll out in stages, but officials say oversight will increase. That policy move, combined with freezes and hacks, gives firms more reason to pause or shift operations.
