Why these 30 seconds should be cut from John Carpenter’s The Thing

by admin June 25, 2025

John Carpenter’s The Thing is very nearly a perfect movie, but the opening scene is wholly unnecessary, and reduces the impact of the horrors that follow.

Genre fans bemoan the proliferation of remakes in horror, and they’re probably right when it comes to updates of Psycho, Jacob’s Ladder, Child’s Play, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Though that approach did gives us Nic Cage shouting about the bees in his Wicker Man do-over, so it’s not all bad.

There have also been some truly great genre remakes, from Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and David Cronenberg’s The Fly, to Gore Verbinski’s The Ring and James Watkins’ Speak No Evil.

But best of all is arguably John Carpenter’s re-imagining of The Thing From Another World, which he reduced to The Thing in 1982. While I love the result, I also hate the first two minutes, which rob the movie of mystery in its early scenes.

How The Thing currently begins

Universal Pictures

The Thing kicks off with 90 seconds of credits, before we hear the rumbling of a spaceship, which then spins into view, careering through space. The craft quickly bursts into flames as it approaches earth, before that iconic title card busts through the screen, proclaiming this to be “The Thing.”

Carpenter’s memorably sparse electronic score then fires up, as the words “Antarctica, Winter 1982” set the scene, before darkness gives way to light, and we’re introduced to a snowy landscape.

A helicopter flies into view, with a man hanging off the side, searching for something in the white expanse. Carpenter cuts to a sled dog speeding through the snow, and when the man pulls out a rifle, it becomes clear that the animal is being hunted.

He fires multiple times, but the canine evades him, and makes it to the United States Science Institute Station 4, while the gunman is killed before he can explain the bizarre chase.

Why that spacecraft reveal is unforgivable

Universal Pictures

Trouble is, because of that opening scene, we suspect it has something to do with the spaceship. The incident inspires the Americans to investigate a nearby Norwegian base, where they find the charred corpse of what looks to be a deformed human. And once again we can be pretty sure this has something to do with whatever crash-landed on earth.

It’s the same when the dog seems to subsume other canines in his kennel – there’s got to be something extra-terrestrial going down, particularly as those 30 seconds alerted us to that fact.

The American scientists soon suspect that whatever arrived inside the dog can imitate other lifeforms, and realize it is alien in origin when they find the buried spaceship.

This means viewers have been one step ahead of the characters for the entire first act. But excise those first 120 seconds – or, more specifically, the spacecraft’s introduction – and The Thing is a very different movie.

Universal Pictures

Man chasing dog becomes more of a head-scratcher, as does that messed up corpse, and especially the canine body horror.

Has nature turned on us? Is this some virus that’s wiping out humanity? Has man’s best friend somehow evolved into our worst enemy?

These are all questions the audience should be asking themselves until the discovery of that ship. But instead, we have to wait for the characters to catch up, robbing the film of both mystery and suspense.

So if you love The Thing as much as I do, next time you introduce it to a newbie, press play at the two minute mark – or scrub through those key seconds – and allow them to experience the very best version of Carpenter’s classic.

ZKsync’s Airbender zkVM Proves Ethereum Blocks in 35 Seconds

by admin June 25, 2025

Matter Labs, the developer firm behind the layer-2 network ZKsync, unveiled at the Permissionless conference its new cryptographic prover “Airbender” on Tuesday.

A prover is a key component for layer-2s, as it generates zero-knowledge proofs that are then posted to the base layer blockchain (in this case Ethereum) — a crucial process in linking the two chains and ensuring its security.

The ZKsync team claims that Airbender is the fastest of its kind, delivering Ethereum block proofs in 35 seconds with a single GPU, outpacing its competitors benchmarks.

Having fast speeds can save on transaction fees: “we’re entering fraction of a cent territory which is critical for key use cases, including micropayments, high-frequency trading, and decentralized social,” said Alex Gluchowski, the co-founder of Matter Labs, in an interview with CoinDesk. “Faster proofs unlock faster finality, cheaper apps, and crucially, proofs that can be generated anywhere, not just in massive GPU farms.”

The new prover, which is an open-sourced zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM), is based on RISC-V, a newer programming framework that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has suggested to replace the current EVM, because it will make the blockchain more efficient.

“We started building ZKsync Airbender over a year ago because we saw where Ethereum needed to go, and what ZK apps would eventually demand,” said Gluchowski. “Vitalik’s recent post was a great affirmation of our plans, but this path has been in motion for a while.”

While Airbender is still early in its rollout, Matter Labs has released an app that lets developers test out the new prover. If all goes according to plan and the ZKsync governance process approves it, Airbender will be included in a protocol upgrade later this summer, according to Gluchowski.

“ZKsync Airbender proves Ethereum blocks in 35 seconds using a single GPU. That’s the start of something ground-breaking: home-proving, real-time cross-chain UX, and ZK apps that can verify on the fly. This is the foundation for an Internet of verifiable, interconnected chains,” Gluchowksi said.

Elite Tekken player “Joe Budden” kicked out of tournament seconds after beating a pro

by admin June 15, 2025

The Tekken 8 pools at CEO 2025 had one of the most bizarre and chaotic matches in fighting game history, a set where one player who named himself “Joe Budden” beat Tekken pro Bilal with a 2-0 win only to get disqualified from the tournament literal seconds after the win.

Fighting game tournaments can have some pretty bizarre moments with thousands of people packed in one convention center. People will often dress as their favorite characters to compete, build an insane custom controller, get coached by their dog, or rip their shirts off on stage.

However, “Joe Budden” had a brief match against Tekken pro Bilal that’s one for the history books. Joe’s known as a ranked grinder for Tekken 8 who typically plays online and uses a very aggressive playstyle with Claudio that’s often rage-inducing for his opponent.

Joe proved that this strategy can work against the very best, beating a top-tier player who traveled to CEO all the way from Pakistan without losing a game… only to get disqualified seconds later after he rushed backstage and threw a package of toilet paper at the commentators.

To be clear, this Joe Budden has absolutely no connection to popular rapper/songwriter Joe Budden. That’s just his username in-game.

He’s one of many North American players who doesn’t travel often but is an absolute menace online. These kinds of players can often get surprising results, even against pro players who compete full-time.

This was the case when he fought Bilal on-stage, with him taunting the pro player by Ki Charging (Tekken’s version of taunting) after every round he won.

He took the momentum from that first win straight into the second game, taking a 2-0 win over Bilal even if the individual rounds were very close.

He celebrated by putting some toilet paper in front of the camera and putting his finger in front of the words “Ultra Soft”, on the packaging. But what isn’t shown in the video is him rushing backstage and tossing the pack of toilet paper to the commentators.

“MF DOOM came backstage and tried to throw the ULTRA SOFT at me and spooky lmao,” said commentator MarkMan. Both him and Spooky were good sports about it, turning the ordeal into part of the broadcast and making jokes about it.

However, despite them taking it on the chin, tournament officials were forced to DQ him as is reflected in his tournament results. He would have been set to fight in the Winner’s bracket for a chance at top 24, but both his matches show up as DQs.

“He was DQ’d because he went to the backstage area (which is a big no no unless you’re working there), was being held back by one of the TOs and still pushed forward against warnings to do what he did,” Markman said of the toilet paper incident.

“We (commentary) have no say in what happens because we were still doing commentary. The event leads/organizers decided to take action based on what happened.”

Joe’s been traveling a lot this year, with him even going to EVO Japan to try and compete. He’s clearly a serious competitor, and he could have a shot at beating some of the best Tekken pros. As long as he keeps the toilet paper at home.
