Looking for an impressive gaming monitor to match your powerful desktop? The 32-inch version of the Samsung Odyssey G8 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is currently marked down from $1,300 to just $1,100. Odyssey OLED G81SF 4K 240Hz Gaming Monitor

I got to spend some time with the 27-inch version of this panel and was extremely impressed with its incredible image quality, whether watching movies or playing games. A big part of that is the QD-OLED panel, which is capable of producing perfectly dark black levels, as well as bright, vivid colors.

While streaming services might have limits when it comes to utilizing that kind of screen, most video games can take advantage of a panel like this without any extra work. The result is immersive, lifelike scenes, particularly in more cinematic and detailed games. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on a screen like this is a rare delight, available only to those with thousands to spare on their battle station.

Even my supercharged gaming desktop, which features Nvidia’s top-end RTX 5090 (7/10, WIRED Recommends) couldn’t get anywhere close to 240 Hz in any game with the settings turned up. You’ll likely need to turn the quality down, or rely heavily on multi-frame generation, in order to reach 200+ FPS at 4K in modern titles.

In fact, I wouldn’t even consider using this monitor unless you’re on an RTX 3000 Series GPU or newer, the first generation to support the HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity needed for 4K at 240 Hz. Thankfully, the G81SF does support both FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync, so AMD users on Radeon RX 6000 Series or newer cards might give this a look as well. Anything older than that and you’re better off checking one of our other favorite gaming monitors.

If you’ve got the scratch, and the rig to match, this Samsung is absolutely one of the most premium gaming monitors available, and a noticeable discount to help cover the cost of a GPU upgrade is particularly welcome.

Spawn Limited Edition 4K Blu-Ray – Save Big On Your Preorder At Amazon

Back in the ’90s, Todd McFarlane’s Spawn was one of the hottest comic books on shelves. The flagship series for Image Comics, Spawn’s popularity spilled into mainstream pop culture with its own line of toys, an animated HBO series, and –perhaps most notably–a feature film adaptation in 1997 starring Michael Jai White as the titular antihero. Now, almost 18 years later, the grim superhero film is getting a limited-edition 4K release from Arrow Video, which is on a roll with 4K restorations of cult classics.

Spawn Limited Edition includes theatrical and director’s cuts as well as premium packaging, new artwork, and a few collectibles. Preorders opened at $50 in late July, but Amazon and Walmart are now offering a substantial discount that drops the price to $32 ahead of its October 7 release.

Arrow Video restored the Theatrical and Director’s Cuts in native 4K (2160p) resolution using the original camera negatives. Both versions support High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10. Audio options include DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and lossless stereo.

The Limited Edition is packaged in a reversible sleeve with new artwork. You’ll also get an illustrated booklet with fresh commentary and a double-sided, fold-out poster.

The main difference between the Theatrical and Director’s Cut is the tone, as a lot of the violence was removed to secure a PG-13 rating. Other than that, the Director’s Cut is less than three minutes longer than the Theatrical Cut, but the extra violence pushes it into R-rated territory.

There’s also a ton of bonus materials, such as a a brand-new audio commentary with comic book expert and podcast host Dave Baxter, and new interviews with the film’s cast and crew. You can also explore archival content, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, promotional materials, and audio commentary tracks, many of which are from previous DVD and Blu-ray releases. Spawn tells the story of ruthlessly efficient black ops soldier Al Simmons. Betrayed and murdered by his commanding officer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen), Simmons is sent to hell for his sins, but he is resurrected on Earth by the devil Malebolgia as part of a grand scheme to kickstart the apocalypse. Empowered with the might of Hell, Simmons finds himself torn between his quest for revenge, dark forces, and salvation.

While it’s not on the same level as Blade–which arrived a year later and is credited for modernizing superhero movies–there’s still a lot to love about Spawn. It’s not afraid to be a comic book movie, and it mixed impressive practical effects with groundbreaking CGI at the time to bring the character to life. With Michael Jai White as the tortured antihero, the movie had a terrific leading man opposed by John Leguizamo’s character of Clown, who could transform into the monstrous Violator when backed into a corner.

A movie night with Spawn followed up by Blade would make for a great double feature. Blade is already available on 4K Blu-ray for only $21.41 (was $35). Alternatively, you can grab Blade Trilogy for just $12 on 1080p Blu-ray.

Spawn Compendiums: Color Editions (Paperback)

If you want to check out the comic books that turned Spawn into a household name, the Compendium Collection paperbacks are a nice budget-friendly option. Image Comics has been releasing updated, full-color editions over the past few years. Seven massive volumes are available now. Volume 7 was just published September 9. Fair warning: All of the Compendiums eclipse 1,000 pages, so these take up considerable shelf space. Each one retails for $60, but you can save some cash at Amazon right now. Volume 1, for instance, is discounted to only $34.

Spawn: Origins Deluxe Editions (Hardcover)

The Deluxe Editions are printed on larger, higher-quality paper and are hardbound rather than paperback. Each Deluxe Edition comes with a fancy slipcase. But while these are large books in their own right, each one contains about half as many comics as the Compendium Editions.

The Digital Version of ‘Twilight Imperium’ Will Save You So Much Clean Up Time

Twilight Imperium has had a rep for endurance almost since it was first introduced. A dense tabletop experience of spacebound strategy, it’s become the face of marathon-length board gaming as players spend hours after hours dictating their space operatic maneuvers through the medium of many, many, many little tokens and cards being shuffled and passed around the board. So, good news for people who’ve always been interested but daunted by those occasionally tall tales of just what an effort it even is to get the ball rolling on a session, let alone finish a game: the whole process is about to get a lot easier, with some caveats.

This week, Asmodee and Red Square Games announced that they would be working together on the first-ever official digital edition of Twilight Imperium, based off the fourth edition of the game introduced in 2017. Although community-created ways to play Twilight Imperium online have existed for many years through platforms like Tabletop Simulator, Twilight Imperium Digital will adapt the board game experience as faithfully as possible, fully implementing the fourth-edition ruleset and its expansions as players vie for control of the galaxy, giving the experience some gamified snazz while not sacrificing the depth of strategy the tabletop game is known for.

As well as including online multiplayer, the ability to play against AI opponents (who presumably can’t complain about how long it actually takes to play a full game of Twilight Imperium when you’re hankering), and even asynchronous multiplayer options to let you play the game at your own pace, Twilight Imperium digital will offer onboarding tutorials and interactive tooltips to teach newcomers to play the game, with no worries about having to remember the myriad rules.

But perhaps most important of all to some people is that, of course, the digital version of Twilight Imperium means no more having to set up oodles of tiles, tokens, little plastic ships, and cards to even get going—and putting it all away just means closing the game. It sounds silly to anyone who’s not actually played the board game, but it cannot be overstated what a barrier even the simple act of physically preparing to play Twilight Imperium can be sometimes.

That is part of the charm of Twilight Imperium, in some ways. Even beyond the physicality of moving your fleets from one planet to another, that almost ritualistic process of having to prepare and lay out the galaxy map and make sure all your pieces are in place before you get to Twilight Imperium‘s trademark back and forth of trade, diplomacy, and military strategy—the administrative aspect is almost just another layer of that, a commitment to the process that you’re about to undertake.

But even if you do lose that process by relinquishing administration over to a video game version… just think of all the more time you’ll have to actually play Twilight Imperium!

Twilight Imperium Digital will release on PC, but while it’s currently available to wishlist on Steam, its release date is unannounced.

Florida woman punches alligator in the face to save her 4-month-old Shih Tzu

A Florida woman is recovering after fending off a five-foot alligator with her fists to save her puppy from being dragged into a creek.

Land O’ Lakes resident Danie Wright was walking her 4-month-old Shih Tzu, Dax, near a stagnant creek behind her home when the gator attacked. The creek, covered in watermoss, gave the alligator sufficient cover to initiate his attack.

“I turned and looked, and an alligator had him,” Wright explained. “The alligator’s front teeth were through the collar of my dog.”

Florida woman gets bitten by gator after punching it to save dog

The gator began pulling Dax into the water, prompting Wright to fight back.

“I just punched him, punched and punched,” she told WTSP-TV. “I punched him in the eye enough that he kind of let go, he unclamped a little, and I pulled off, but his teeth dragged down my arm.”

Wright managed to flip the reptile onto its back, freeing Dax and retreating inside. She suffered bite wounds during the struggle but is now recovering.

“I freaking fought an alligator and won,” she beamed.

Video captured by Wright shows the alligator lingering behind her home after the attack. Florida Fish and Wildlife trappers later removed it from the property.

The Florida woman is using this wild story to encourage others to be cautious in gator territory. “Just be careful with your dogs. These alligators are no joke. I mean, 15 feet, he came out to get him, and I didn’t see him.”

She further advised dog owners to be more alert when walking them near water. “Leave your phone at home,” she urged.

This isn’t the first time someone has had to face off with a gator. Back in 2023, TikToker Dave Franks went viral after posting a video where a zoo visitor jumped into an enclosure and started wrestling an alligator to help a handler trapped by the animal.

Not every gator is vicious, however. Earlier in September, a Pennsylvania man made headlines after being denied entry to a Walmart store for bringing his five-foot emotional support alligator inside a shopping cart.

If Star Wars Can’t Save Destiny 2 I’m Not Sure Anything Can

This year’s The Edge of Fate is arguably one of Destiny 2‘s worst expansions ever. Some great story beats and cool moments could not salvage one of the most disappointing loot grinds in the history of the game. Less than two months since launching, Steam concurrent numbers for Bungie’s MMO shooter have fallen off a cliff to all-time lows. On Tuesday the Sony-owned studio streamed a deep-dive into what feels like Destiny 2‘s last chance for a major rebound: the Star Wars-themed expansion Renegades.

Out December 2, the first crossover-themed campaign in the live service game’s history was originally teased back in May. Fans had been wondering just how deep the collaboration would go. Would it just incorporate Star Wars motifs into Destiny 2‘s world, or be a full-on mash-up that would bleed more deeply between the disparate science fictions? The answer is somewhere in the middle.

“Renegades merges Destiny’s distinctive storytelling and gameplay with themes and elements drawn from the iconic sci-fi franchise,” Bungie wrote in its announcement. In practice this seems to mean a sci-fi Western with ties to deep Destiny 2 lore that features lightsabers, AT-ST walkers, and lots of Star Wars sound effects, if for no other reason than it all sounds really cool. Also an X-Wing jumpship that is literally just an X-Wing.

Destiny 2: Renegades will revolve around rising through the ranks of the criminal underworld in a Mos Eisley-like outpost called Tharsis as players confront a new Cabal faction called the Barant Imperium. You’ll perform jobs for competing syndicates to curry favor and unlock new gear and options as the difficulty, rewards, and chaos keep escalating. Following the Drifter’s lead and going rogue, Renegades will ultimately try to tie things back to the mystery of The Nine that kicked off Destiny 2‘s current Year of Prophecy.

There’s a lot of ideas that sound interesting, and fun mechanics like a very Helldivers 2-coded option to call down ammo crate drop pods that kill enemies in the process. And there’s also a lot of Star Wars stuff like the lightsaber, which is actually a new weapon called the Praxic Blade that players will collect and customize the parts for across the Renegades campaign and the upcoming dungeon. There will be different colors and even the ability to deflect incoming fire back at enemies like in the movies.

Will all of this fit together in a way that feels exciting and natural and not like a licensed cash-grab that only further dilutes the mystery and mystique around the Destiny 2 universe? I have my doubts. Would I like a mercenary-themed Destiny 2 campaign about navigating competing factions and featuring non-linear mission progressions? Absolutely. Do I want to play a Star Wars MMO that functions like a shooter? Hell yeah. Do I want those things thrown into a blender? At this point, definitely not. Hopefully Renegades can prove me wrong.

Fixing Destiny 2 starts with Ash and Iron

Today’s mini-showcase was also the latest milestone on Bungie’s “fix Destiny 2” tour which continues with the free Ash and Iron update. It brings back the Plaguelands from the original Destiny and adds a new three-player activity called Reclaim, about golden age tech and the Vex. There’s lots of new gear, more lore drops around Maya, and an event coming later called Call to Arms that will see Devrim Kay finally leave his European Deadzone bell tower. There’s a new exotic mission coming as well with Iron Banner, Festival of the Lost, and more that will be detailed in an upcoming roadmap.

More important are the fixes Bungie is promising leading up to Renegades in December. The studio wants to make the current power climb faster and improve overall rewards from activities. There will be upcoming buffs for supers and subclasses, alongside a pause on nerfs and balance changes as Bungie tries to right the ship. The “road to Renegades” will begin with making the loot chase more rewarding across the entire game, especially in raids and dungeons and for fireteams of three taking on the hardest activities. The proof will be in how that actually gets implemented, though.

Bungie is still trying to tinker around the edges of its new systems implemented in The Edge of Fate. It could be an improvement, or it could lead to even more convoluted overlapping systems that foster bad incentives and boring activity loops. Destiny 2 is at the point where it needs drastic overhauls that make it more fun but also much simpler. With 10 years of storytelling wrapped after last year’s The Final Shape expansion, it feels like Destiny 2 needs to be content with becoming a casual session-based game rather than a weekly second job and build from there. There’s plenty of interesting stuff coming down the road, but I’m not yet convinced hitting the Star Wars button will be enough.

These Climate Hacks to Save the Poles Could Totally Backfire

Last year, the United Nations predicted that Earth’s average temperature could rise more than 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) by 2100 if we don’t reduce global emissions. That level of warming would cause catastrophic, irreversible damage to ecosystems, underscoring the urgent need to slow the pace of climate change.

Still, the amount of greenhouse gases humans pump into the atmosphere continues to rise. Without sufficient progress on the emissions front, some scientists have suggested another route: artificially counteracting global warming through geoengineering. Many of these controversial solutions aim to mitigate climate breakdown in the polar regions, but a review published Tuesday in Frontiers in Science concludes that even the most widely recognized proposals are likely to cause more harm than good.

“I find that there’s been confusion between urgency and haste,” co-author Ben Orlove, a professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University, told Gizmodo. “Though we recognize the urgency of action, that should never serve as an excuse for incompletely reviewed proposals moving forward.”

Polar regions under pressure

Earth’s polar regions are warming faster than the average global temperature. Experts predict this will lead to severe and irreversible consequences both regionally and globally, such as local ecosystem collapse and sea level rise. Proponents of geoengineering often cite this as a driving force behind efforts to implement such strategies in the Arctic and Antarctic, but none of them are backed by robust, real-world testing at scale.

For this review, an international team of researchers evaluated five geoengineering concepts designed to slow the pace of ice melt in the polar regions. The ideas include spraying reflective particles into the atmosphere, using giant underwater curtains to shield ice shelves from warm water, artificially thickening or boosting the reflectivity of sea ice, pumping water out from underneath glaciers, and adding nutrients to polar oceans to stimulate blooms of carbon-sequestering phytoplankton.

Not every fix is worth the risk

Orlove hopes these findings encourage the scientific community and decision-makers to exercise scrutiny before investing time and money in polar geoengineering projects. “One of the things that troubles me is the claim that climate change is so severe that we need to try all possible methods, and blocking any possible solution is an error,” he said.

“There is a long history in medical research of not undertaking certain experiments on living humans and not attempting extreme cures that just seem unethical,” Orlove said. “But when it comes to experimenting on the planet—and its immediate effect on people—that kind of awareness doesn’t come forward.”
