Saros: Release Date , Platforms, And Everything We Know So Far About The Next Housemarque Game

by admin September 29, 2025

One of the big upcoming first-party PlayStation Studios titles is Saros, the next game from developer Housemarque. A spiritual sequel to Returnal, Saros builds on the foundation of that roguelike action game and is described as the “ultimate evolution” of the company’s approach to gameplay-first adventures. Here’s everything we know about the game so far, ahead of its upcoming release in early 2026.

When will Saros be released?

Housemarque has set a release window of March 20, 2026, for Saros.

Preorder Saros

Preorders are not yet available for Saros.

Saros trailer

The first trailer for Saros was released during the February State of Play event–check it out below. The trailer spotlights the setting, tone, and story. We think it looks pretty great.

Saros platforms

Saros will launch on PS5, but Housemarque hasn’t mentioned a PC release yet. Its previous game, Returnal, did come to PC two years after it first arrived on PS5, and with Sony adopting a multiplatform release strategy, it’s likely that Saros will eventually find its way to this platform in the future.

Will Saros be PS5 Pro Enhanced?

Creative director Gregory Louden did confirm during State of Play that Saros will be PS5 Pro-enhanced, although what those exact enhancements are remains to be seen. Housemarque makes some of the best-looking games around, with Returnal being one of the more graphically impressive games on PS5 when it first launched. If that game is any indication, you can probably expect some terrific monster designs and particle effects for days when Saros launches.

Saros story, setting, and characters

Set on the planet Carcosa, Saros puts you in the boots of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer who ison the hunt for answers on this lost off-world colony that is currently caught in the shadow of a very ominous eclipse. Housemarque says that it has crafted a haunting story for the game, one full of nightmarish monsters judging by the teaser trailer.

The studio also added that the game will feature a grounded voice-over, cinematics, audio logs, and conversations with several non-playable characters. There are also Soltari Holograms detailing what happened on Carcosa as you explore the planet, and collecting them will reveal what exactly happened on that planet. Housemarque added that there’ll also be more surreal and mysterious storytelling sequences, but it won’t be sharing details on them just yet.

A familiar face

Your eyes are not deceiving you, that is indeed actor Rahul Kohli lending his voice and likeness to Devraj. According to Housemarque, the Midnight Mass actor delivers a “grounded” performance in Saros. “Every time the sun dies, madness reigns, then everything begins again. “But after every death, I always come back stronger,” Devraj says in the trailer.

Saros gameplay

Saros looks to be a game where aggression pays off, as Arjun wears an advanced combat suit that gives him several enhanced abilities. Every time you start a run, you can select your loadout from a mix of Soltari human weaponry and Carcosan alien weaponry. The September 2025 State of Play deep dive showed Arjun wielding the Soltari Phosphorous Shotgun, a weapon that can melt through enemies.

The other big difference between Saros and Returnal is that Arjun can charge straight into danger, thanks to the Soltari Shield. By holding R1, Arjun can absorb the energy from lethal projectiles and charge up a Carcosan Power Weapon to hit hard. Essentially, you can harvest the attacks of your enemies and throw it right back at them. The catch here is that Power Weapons also transform Arjun’s right arm into an eclipse-fueled weapon, corrupting him in the process. It’s a double-edged sword, but one that he can swing to gain an edge in combat.

If Arjun does fall in battle, he will have a “second chance” to cheat death and get right back into the thick of things. After discovering how to use eclipse corruption energy to rise back up on first death, Arjun can come back stronger and future runs will give him the option to upgrade his Soltari advanced combat suit and abilities.

“After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to ‘come back stronger’ to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa,” Housemarque explained.

Here’s a first look at Housemarque’s Returnal follow-up Saros, out next March

by admin September 25, 2025

Housemarque has provided a first look at Saros, it’s next game and PS5 follow-up to Returnal.

It’s set for release on 20th March on PS5, and will be enhanced for PS5 Pro.

While the initial reveal was purely cinematic, now we’ve got a look at the game’s gameplay. Check it out for yourself in the trailer below.

Saros – Gameplay Reveal Trailer | PS5 GamesWatch on YouTube

At first glance, this is more of the same intense bullet hell action we know and love from Returnal, but there are some subtle tweaks too.

Creative director Gregory Louden introduced the video, stating the game will explore the emotional and haunting story of protagonist Arjun Devraj (Rahul Kohli) on a shapeshifting planet. Later he mentioned an ensemble of NPCs, suggesting this could be more story focused than Returnal was.

As for gameplay, Devraj wields a shield used to absorb projectiles and then hit back with a powerful weapon – almost like a delayed parry. Louden also hinted at the progression system with a permanent ability: Second Chance, which revives Devraj on death. The trailer ended with a wild-looking boss, of course.

Further details have been provided on the PlayStation Blog. Saros takes place on the hostile alien planet of Carcosa, with the first biome shown being that of a lost civilisation. Devraj will begin each run by choosing a loadout, mixing Soltari human weaponry and Carcosan alien weaponry, plus he’ll have access to a wide variety of tools.

Saros was first announced earlier this year at Sony’s February State of Play and will be the first game from Housemarque as a first party studio, after being bought by Sony in 2021 after Returnal’s release.

Sony announced Saros will release on X 2026, exclusive on PS5. It’s unknown if a PC release will follow, as with Returnal.

Returnal has received plenty of praise from players, critics, and award-givers alike, and is considered one of the key games to truly make use of the PS5 hardware. As such, expectations are high for Saros to follow suit.

Here’s Sony’s Next Exclusive Sci-Fi Death Trap, Saros

by admin September 25, 2025

Sony opened its September State of Play with our first gameplay look at Saros, the next big PS5 game from Returnal makers Housemarque. It’s set to arrive on March 20, 2026 exclusively on PS5 and will be “enhanced” on PS5 Pro. Like Returnal, it’s a fast-paced third-person roguelike sci-fi shooter built around players dying over and over while getting stronger with permanent upgrades.

Here’s the new Saros gameplay trailer that just premiered during State of Play. The upcoming sci-fi game stars Rahul Kohli as Arjun Devraj and looks just as wild and frenetic as Returnal.

And here’s the game’s official description:

Arjun Devraj, a Soltari enforcer, fights to survive on the lost colony of Carcosa under an ominous eclipse. Shape-shifting biomes and hostile ruins set the stage for a fast-paced, cinematic action experience where every encounter demands precision and adaptability. Combat unfolds as a fluid dance of dodges, shields, and parries, paired with a high-tech arsenal built of human and alien weaponry. Master enemy patterns, evolve your strategy, and face off against spectacular bosses that push every skill to the edge. Death is not the end, with permanent upgrades, evolving equipment, and the “Second Chance” system that allows you to always come back stronger.

PlayStation 5 owners have been wondering what 2026’s exclusive release calendar will look like, and with Saros, it looks like Sony is starting the year off strong with what appears to be another exciting and likely tough-as-nails third-person roguelike shooter from a team that has been consistently knocking it out of the park for three decades. Will Saros match the success of Helldivers 2, the sci-fi shooter that kicked of Sony’s 2024? Probably not, but either way, I’m excited to get my hands on Saros in March of next year.

First gameplay trailer for Returnal follow-up Saros reveals a gentler roguelike that’s no less abundant in bullets

by admin September 24, 2025

Sony and Housemarque’s sci-fantasy shooter Saros got its first proper gameplay trailer at PlayStation’s latest State of Play this evening. If you were hoping for more Returnal, then pour yourself a huge brimming flagon of victory mead, for this is basically Returnal plus a gruff male lead, a sunnier shape-shifting wasteland, and a force shield that converts attacks into juice for your biggest guns.

Do people drink victory mead in the world of Saros? This is not a question answered by the trailer. Instead, we’re treated to a series of agile bangfights with enemies of all shapes and sizes. Some are robotic. Some are skull-themed. Some have more arms than seems strictly necessary. Some are large enough to give Kratos the cold sweats. See that Sony? Did you a cheeky bit of license cross-pollination there.

As in Returnal – a game that took Housemarque’s shmup pedigree and applied it to a third-person roguelike shooter – most of these creatures are partial to spewing the most fantastically patterned fusillades of energy projectiles. It’s as though somebody had sneezed while downing their victory mead, and skilfully angled their lips and nostrils to produce a crowd-pleasing firework effect, rather than an excruciating faux pas. If you dislike being sneezed on by cosmic goblins, the game’s horizontal dash looks very effective providing you manage its cooldown.

The trailer blurb recaps the story premise. In Saros you play Arjun Devraj, voiced by Rajul Kohli. He’s a Soltari enforcer exploring the lost colony of Carcosa in the face of an eclipse that causes the landscape to shapeshift. I don’t find Devraj that compelling as a character so far, but he’s got a cool coat so we’ll call it even Stevens. There are also some sad holographic people you can query about Carcosa’s plight.

The key differences I can see over Returnal are 1) that energy shield, which also comes in handy up against laser beam traps and the like, and 2) a Second Chance revive mechanic, which sees Devraj slamming his fist into the ground and resurrecting in sheer petulance at having accidentally taken 400 bullets to the jaw. Housemarque have been keen to emphasise that this is a gentler roguelike than Returnal, with “permanent resources and progression making every death valuable”. See also the tagline, “Come back stronger”.

All we need now is a PC release date. The thing I’d most like to hear about next is the bestiary. I adored Returnal’s lore writing. I thought the 3D bullet hell stuff was bonkers, too, but mostly I’m here for knotty descriptions of exceedingly odd fauna.

Disclosure: RPS co-founder Alec Meer wrote for Returnal and is the lead writer on Saros.
