New passive cooling approach from UC San Diego uses capillary evaporation to reduce heat in computing environments

by admin June 26, 2025

  • Evaporative cooling, like sweating, could reduce energy use in data centers
  • New fiber membrane handles heat with zero added energy use
  • Researchers retool filtration material to cool electronics passively

As AI and cloud computing grow, the rising demand for data processing is driving up heat output, with cooling already making up nearly 40% of a data center’s energy use and projected to more than double worldwide by 2030.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new cooling technology that mimics the way animals regulate body temperature… through sweating.

The passive system removes heat from electronics using evaporation, offering a potential alternative to traditional cooling methods in data centers and other high-powered computing environments.

Finding the “sweet spot”

The core of the system is a fiber membrane with a network of tiny, interconnected pores that use capillary action to draw cooling liquid across the surface.

As the liquid evaporates, it efficiently removes heat without requiring extra energy.

“Compared to traditional air or liquid cooling, evaporation can dissipate higher heat flux while using less energy,” said Renkun Chen, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego. Chen co-led the project with professors Shengqiang Cai and Abhishek Saha.

The research was published in the journal Joule, explaining how Chen’s team, including Ph.D. student Tianshi Feng and postdoctoral researcher Yu Pei, tested the membrane under variable heat conditions.

It handled over 800 watts per square centimeter of heat, a record for this type of cooling system. It also performed consistently over several hours.

Traditional porous membranes have often failed due to clogging or boiling. Chen explained that the team found a “sweet spot” with the membrane’s pore size and structure.

“These fiber membranes were originally designed for filtration, and no one had previously explored their use in evaporation,” said Chen. “We recognized that their unique structural characteristics – interconnected pores and just the right pore size – could make them ideal for efficient evaporative cooling. What surprised us was that, with the right mechanical reinforcement, they not only withstood the high heat flux–they performed extremely well under it.”

The researchers believe the membrane is still operating below its full potential.

They are now refining the design and working on ways to integrate it into cold plates, flat devices used to cool chips like CPUs and GPUs.

The group is also preparing to commercialize the technology through a startup. Their goal is to provide scalable, low-energy cooling solutions as global data demand continues to grow.

Coinbase to Open New San Francisco Office After Dropping HQ Model

by admin May 30, 2025

Crypto exchange Coinbase has signed a lease for office space in San Francisco’s Mission Rock development, marking the crypto exchange’s return to the city after abandoning its headquarters model roughly three years ago.

The move is based on a deal Coinbase secured for a 150,000 square foot spot at 1090 Dr. Maya Angelou Lane, and represents more than half of Building B at the waterfront development built by Tishman Speyer and the San Francisco Giants.

San Francisco “is the place to build and grow,” Mayor Daniel Lurie wrote Thursday afternoon on X, welcoming Coinbase.

The space will serve as Coinbase’s largest single office, according to a report by The San Francisco Standard, cited by Mayor Lurie.

Responding to Mayor Lurie, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said that there was “still lots of work to do to improve the city,” saying that it was “badly run for many years,” later adding that Mayor Lurie’s work “has not gone unnoticed.”

Two weeks earlier, Coinbase was listed in the S&P 500, cementing its stature among publicly listed companies in the U.S.

Tax concerns, lease obligations

Coinbase’s return to the city comes after it paid $25 million for the “early termination of an office lease,” its 2023 shareholder letter shows, following its transition to operating without a traditional headquarters in February 2021.

Coinbase announced on May 5, 2021, that it would close its San Francisco office—its former headquarters—in 2022 as part of its transition to a remote-first model. The company emphasized that this move was intended to ensure no single location would be considered its headquarters, aligning with its decentralized workforce strategy.

While the exact closure date in 2022 was not publicly specified, the office at 430 California Street was fully decommissioned that year.

In 2022, a similar move out of the city was made by Kraken, a rival U.S. exchange, with its former CEO Jesse Powell saying the city had “fallen quite far,” recounting how he has seen it “deteriorate” since he moved in 2013.

“We never left California. Lots of our employees live there. We go to where the talent is,” Armstrong said in response to concerns pointing out that San Francisco was a “tax-heavy state.”

Data compiled by the tax consulting and advisory firm Ryan indicates that businesses in San Francisco pay taxes based on their annual revenue, with two central taxes that become more expensive as companies grow their earnings.

Small businesses that earn less than $5 million annually are exempt from the main business tax, but larger companies can pay up to approximately 4% of their total revenue when both taxes are combined, according to changes in business tax for the city approved in November of last year.

Coinbase’s 10-K SEC filing for late 2024 describes the company as a “remote-first company” that does not “maintain a headquarters” for its roughly 3,800 employees.

The report indicates $132.3 million in global total operating lease obligations for corporate offices, with $9.9 million due in the next 12 months.

LA Galaxy, San Diego FC condemn postgame fan brawl

by admin May 25, 2025

The LA Galaxy and San Diego FC condemned the violence that broke out between supporters following the match at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday afternoon, insisting the incident does not reflect the values of either club.

“San Diego FC and the LA Galaxy are united in our efforts to foster a safe and welcoming environment for all fans attending our matches. There is no room for violence in our sport. The incidents that occurred following Saturday’s match at Snapdragon Stadium do not reflect the values of either club and are entirely unacceptable,” the teams said in a joint statement.

“We urge all fans to support the game we all love with passion and respect, ensuring that every match remains a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance. Both clubs are actively working with Snapdragon Stadium security, Major League Soccer and local law enforcement to conduct a thorough review of the incidents. Any behavior found to be in violation of the MLS Fan Code of Conduct will result in disciplinary action, which may include stadium ejections and bans.”

Videos captured fans from each team getting into a physical altercation in the stands following the final whistle, with local news reporting the fight spilled over into the parking lot following the match.

San Diego FC previously addressed a similar situation when the team faced LAFC in April, as supporters from each club engaged in physical violence.

At the time, San Diego reiterated that the club sought to provide a “safe and welcoming environment for all fans.”

“San Diego FC seeks to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all fans attending matches at Snapdragon Stadium. Fan violence has no place in our game, and the type of conduct displayed following Saturday’s match against LAFC is unacceptable,” the team said in its statement in April.

Expansion San Diego, playing in its first season, is now the third MLS team in southern California, joining the LA Galaxy and LAFC in a region passionate about soccer.

San Diego, which won the game 2-1, returns to Snapdragon Stadium for a home game against Austin FC on May 31.

Zoox issues another software recall for its robotaxis after a San Francisco collision

by admin May 24, 2025

The Amazon-owned robotaxi company Zoox has issued its second recall in a month following a collision that occurred in San Francisco. It has already submitted a voluntary software recall notice to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after an internal review of the incident and has already deployed the software update to its fleet of 270 vehicles. According to the company’s announcement, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi was struck by an electric scooter after braking at an intersection to give right-of-way to other motorists.

The person on the scooter fell, and the robotaxi continued moving and only stopped after completing the turn. Zoox’s robotaxi didn’t hit the rider, but a company personnel met them and offered medical attention for minor injuries. The incident in San Francisco took place on May 8, shortly after the company announced a voluntary software recall following a separate incident in April wherein a Zoox robotaxi and a passenger car collided in Las Vegas.

Despite the recall, Zoox said that its vehicle was stopped and wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary when it was struck. Still, it rolled out a software update to improve its vehicles’ perception tracking capabilities and to prevent them from moving forward again when a road user is in a vulnerable position nearby. While the robotaxi didn’t make contact with the rider after they fell on the road, the company most likely realized that it could have, which could lead to more serious accidents in the future. Zoox rolled out its autonomous vehicles for testing on the streets of San Francisco in late 2024. Only company employees can catch a ride at the moment, but Zoox is planning to start offering rides to the public sometime later this year.

Here’s The GTA 6 Trailer Recreated In San Andreas & Vice City

by admin May 21, 2025

Screenshot: Foosmoke / Rockstar Games / Kotaku

Someone has perfectly recreated the second Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer in the PS2-era GTA game San Andreas (with some help from Vice City, too).

You Should Play Grand Theft Auto III Before GTA VI | Total Recall

It’s a time-honored tradition to recreate new Grand Theft Auto trailers in older games and other media. And while it might not be a new phenomenon, it’s still enjoyable to watch these fan creations as they show us just how far Rockstar’s tech has come over the decades. So I knew that after Rockstar published GTA 6‘s second trailer earlier this month, following the news that the open-world sequel was being delayed until May 2026, someone would set out to recreate the new video in a previous GTA game. And here we are.

Foosmoke made the video using mostly GTA San Andreas to recreate nearly every moment from the new GTA 6 trailer. Sometimes the creator adds extra details using video editing tricks or bits from Vice City, but this is still more or less the GTA 6 trailer recreated in San Andreas, and it’s a blast to watch.

Previously, Foosmoke recreated the first GTA 6 trailer as if it were a PS2-era game. That video is also great. Of course, Foosmoke wasn’t alone in recreating that first trailer. Plenty of people did as well, sometimes in other games or even, in one case, in real life.

Fans have done similar recreations in the past. I fondly remember this recreation of Grand Theft Auto V’s first trailer in San Andreas. It’s wild how much more realistic Rockstar’s newer GTA games look compared to past entries. However, I do miss the more primitive and blocky visuals, as they live firmly in a very nostalgic part of my brain.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on May 26, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox.
