Cristiano Ronaldo Meme Coin Rumors Fuel $143 Million CR7 ‘Rug Pull’

by admin August 25, 2025

In brief

  • Rumors circulated the internet over the weekend that Cristiano Ronaldo was set to release an official meme coin.
  • As a result, several fake tokens were launched with one touching a $143 million market cap before crashing down 98% all within 15 minutes.
  • On-chain analysis firm Bubblemaps told Decrypt it was likely an organized effort from a group of crypto influencers.

A spree of fake tokens inspired by soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo cropped up over the weekend, thanks to rumors he was about to release a meme coin. But they don’t appear to be more than rumors as Decrypt could not find any credible sources on the matter.

One of the tokens reached a $143 million market cap before crashing 98%—all in just 15 minutes.

The CR7 token, based on the athlete’s nickname, appears to have been promoted by several influencers. But most of them have already deleted their posts. On-chain analyst firm Bubblemaps believes the fake meme coin was likely an organized group effort.

“It is likely that after Kanye West launched YZY, some influencers jumped onto the wave and claimed Cristiano Ronaldo would launch a token too, using their accounts,” pseudonymous Bubblemaps sleuth 0xToolman told Decrypt. “Then they launched an unendorsed token and posted the contract address, luring investors in, only to rug pull shortly after.”

Many of the rumors cling to Ronaldo’s partnership with Binance, which started in 2022 and has seen the release of four NFT collections. However, most fake tokens that launched were found on Solana, with at least five other seemingly fake CR7 meme coins launching on the network—all of which failed to break past a $1 million market capitalization.

It was only the influencer-pushed token that made any waves, soaring to a $143.18 million market cap in just six minutes. But the buzz was fleeting. The token crashed 98% over the next nine minutes, according to DEX Screener. The price drop came as a result of a series of quick sales by several addresses, Bubblemaps told Decrypt.

There have been no social media posts from Ronaldo regarding any plans for an official token, outside of the released Binance NFTs.

The launch follows Ye, formerly Kanye West, launching his own official token after half a year of speculation. YZY hit a $411.23 million market cap an hour after it was announced, per DEX Screener, before plummeting 74% to $105 million over the next 24 hours.

height=”415px”
style=”border: 0;”

Since then, the YZY Money X account has started to claim that the project will be releasing a crypto payments processor as well as a debit card. The project’s account also teased that YZY and USDC payments would be accepted in the Yeezy digital clothing store. Despite this, the token has continued to sag to a $75 million market cap.

Ye had been flirting with the possibility of releasing a token for half a year, which spawned two meme coin communities that were adamant he would soon endorse their project. On YZY’s launch, the communities had to come to terms with the likelihood that their dream wouldn’t come to fruition.

“Yo WTF is going on? Are we still alive?” one user wrote in the token’s Telegram group. “They emotionally harvested us for six months. Bye,” responded.

TRENDING RUMORS

– Newcastle United are preparing themselves for Liverpool to make another bid to sign striker Alexander Isak before the window closes, says iNews. Isak, 25, was the subject of a £110 million bid from the Reds earlier this month, but after it was rejected he posted on Instagram that “the relationship can’t continue” and has been left out of the squad all season. Meanwhile, The Times claims that Liverpool are set to focus on developing 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, rather than pursuing other expensive signings like PSG’s Bradley Barcola or Lyon’s Malick Fofana.

– Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make a £60m bid to sign Manchester City winger Savinho and will try until the end of the transfer window to get a deal done, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The 21-year-old is keen to join Spurs and now everything depends on the size of the offer. Meanwhile, Romano reports that Spurs have seen a €70m offer to sign Como midfielder Nico Paz rejected. The 20-year-old wants to stay with Como as he eyes a future return to his former club Real Madrid, who will activate a clause to re-sign him next year.

Guehi, 25, is already wanted by Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona and has only one year remaining on his Palace contract. City are considering him as a £35m option and they feel he would have long-term value.

– Al Ittihad have opened the door for former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kanté to depart after two years with the Saudi Pro League club, as reported by Footmercato. The 34-year-old has already been offered to various Ligue 1 teams, including AS Monaco and Paris FC, as well as another Saudi club in Al Qadsiah. The midfielder’s next move is likely to be scrutinized by France manager Didier Deschamps with the 2026 World Cup approaching.

– AC Milan are looking to sign Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot after he was placed on the transfer list following a fight with a teammate, as reported by Calciomercato, which adds that USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah would be the player to make way. Atalanta like Musah but, the Rossoneri wouldn’t accept any offers under €30m. Rabiot has also been in touch with Internazionale and Juventus, but Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri wants to reunite with the 30-year-old.

Will Eze’s move to Arsenal force Liverpool to sign Isak?

Craig Burley debates whether Liverpool will be worried about Arsenal signing Eberechi Eze.

ESPN’s Beth Lindop on what the future holds for Alexander Isak.

Isak’s future has been the saga of the summer, and it shows no sign of reaching a resolution anytime soon.

The Sweden international took matters into his own hands last week by releasing a sensational statement, prompting Newcastle to issue public response of their own. While the Tyneside club remain steadfast in their desire not to sanction the player’s exit, the wording of their statement was perhaps less unequivocal than expected, noting that they “do not foresee” the conditions of a transfer being met.

That opens the door for Liverpool to return to the negotiating table with an improvement on their initial £110m bid. The Premier League champions’ interest in Isak remains, although they would have to be given encouragement from Newcastle to bid again.

While the fan response to Isak’s situation is rooted in emotion, football is ultimately a business and, should Liverpool return with a suitable offer, Newcastle may start to feel it is one they cannot refuse.

Aave Stumbles by Over 8% Following World Liberty Financial Rumors

by admin August 23, 2025

The price of the Aave (AAVE) token tumbled by over 8% on Saturday, following rumors that the decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol would receive a different token allocation from World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a DeFi platform backed by members of US president Donald Trump’s family.

“The WLFI team told WuBlockchain that the claim that ‘Aave will receive 7% of the total WLFI token supply’ is false and fake news,” blockchain reporter Colin Wu said, sparking a debate about the rumor and the token arrangement on social media.

Wu was referencing a WLFI community proposal from October 2024, outlining an arrangement in which the Aave decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), responsible for governing the protocol, would receive 7% of the WLFI governance token’s circulating supply and 20% of protocol revenues generated by the WLFI deployment on Aave v3.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov called the proposal “the art of the deal” on Saturday, and, in a separate post, signaled the terms of the proposal were still valid. Following the rumors, Aave’s token fell from about $385 to a low of $339 before rebounding to about $352.

Cointelegraph reached out to World Liberty Financial and Aave spokespeople but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Rumors regarding the arrangement between Aave and World Liberty come amid a renewed interest in DeFi and growing institutional involvement in the crypto niche.

DeFi sector is on the rise as institutions take notice

The total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols is currently over $167 billion, according to DeFiLlama, and is approaching the all-time high of over $212 billion from December 2021.

DeFi TVL rose sharply following the results of the 2024 US elections in anticipation of a friendlier regulatory climate for cryptocurrencies in the country.

Institutional investors, including banks, asset managers, corporations, and financial services companies, have become increasingly involved in crypto and DeFi, shaping many of the narratives during the current market cycle.

This involvement has fueled a debate among the crypto community about encroaching government regulations on permissionless protocols and the potential capture of DeFi by traditional financial institutions.

TRENDING RUMORS

– While Arsenal are closing on a £67.5 million deal to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze from under the noses of Tottenham Hotspur, they are also weighing up a move for Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers, claims The Sun. A potential long-term injury to striker Kai Havertz mas made attempt to sign Rogers more likely, but the Gunners had already been closely monitoring the 23-year-old as they looked for somebody to challenge Gabriel Martinelli on the left wing. Villa are determined to keep the England international and are no longer under financial pressure, so they are unlikely to entertain any offers under £80m.

— Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund has made it clear to Napoli, RB Leipzig, AC Milan and any other interested clubs that he wants any loan deal to include an obligation to sign for them permanently rather than an option, reports Fabrizio Romano. The 22-year-old had been keen to stay at Old Trafford but now wants to feel the confidence of his new club if he is to leave. Elsewhere, Corriere dello Sport state that Højlund is the most likely option to replace Napoli’s injured striker Romelu Lukaku.

– Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is now on Internazionale’s shortlist, reports TEAMtalk, which adds that Roma are also still in picture after initially being rejected by the 25-year-old. Sancho could look for a loan to keep his options open as a free agent in 2026, with Borussia Dortmund and Juventus the frontrunners. Turkish side Besiktas are also interested in the winger, who has no future at Old Trafford after signing for €85m from Dortmund in 2021.

– Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is RB Leipzig’s top option to replace midfielder Xavi Simons, says Florian Plettenberg, with the Netherlands international being set to join Chelsea for around €60m after the Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich. Leipzig have already agreed personal terms with Elliott — who was a standout performer in England’s U21 Euros win this summer — and the Reds would let him leave if they received a suitable offer.

– Brentford have rejected Newcastle United’s improved offer of £35m, plus £5m in add-ons, to sign striker Yoane Wissa, as reported by The Athletic. Brentford haven’t given any club a valuation for the transfer of the 28-year-old, who wants to make the move to St James’ Park, but clearly want more than £40m. Newcastle had previously had a £25m offer rejected, while Nottingham Forest have seen two bids rejected since last January but have now moved on to other targets.

CONFIRMED DEALS

– Bournemouth have completed the €21m signing of Bayer Leverkusen winger Amine Adli.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Sam Tighe on why Arsenal are unlikely to sign both Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers.

It’s no surprise that Arsenal have reignited their Eze interest — perhaps the surprise was that they let it go cold, after clearly doing a lot of groundwork on the deal in early summer — and Rogers, who was just crowned PFA Young Player of the Year, is a player of such potential, he’ll be on everyone’s watchlist.

The players share some distinct similarities: They’re both exciting, dynamic, ball-carrying forwards who can play across the attacking midfield line (although Eze rarely plays on the right); they both cut their teeth in the EFL Championship, making them relatively late bloomers at the top level; and they’re both homegrown, which always helps with squad registration.

Eze, four years Rogers’ senior, is understandably a much more polished footballer. The highlight reel shows 45 Premier League goal contributions in the last three seasons; the deep dive reveals how often he makes the right choice in possession, which is a truly valuable trait.

Rogers is fairly inexperienced for a 23-year-old these days, but is catching up fast. His 40-yard runs with the ball are thrilling, but he does lose the ball a lot too — he ranked in the 6th percentile last season for mis-controls (3.29 per 90) and the 13th percentile for times dispossessed (2.14 per 90).

Eze is ready for a big step; Rogers less so. Having already signed six senior players this summer, it’s highly unlikely the Gunners can acquire both, and if it is to be Eze, it’s likely the right call.

Expert Slams XRP Lawsuit Delay Rumors: ‘2026 Not Happening’

by admin June 23, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Talk of the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s long-running enforcement action against Ripple Labs dragging on into 2026 flashed across X over the weekend, after the pseudonymous trader “Altcoin Bale” warned followers that “SEC v XRP final decision could be delayed until late 2026” — a claim that ricocheted through crypto-X in minutes.

Within hours, Australian solicitor and veteran XRP commentator Bill Morgan counter-punched. “This is not on the cards unless Judge Torres rules against the latest joint motion and rather that make the common sense decision to live with the summary judgement decision and the current penalty and permanent injunction, the settlement process breaks down completely and both parties run their appeals. An improbable outcome.”

XRP Lawsuit: Why 2026 Is A Stretch

Morgan’s confidence rests on hard procedural facts. On 13 June Ripple and the SEC filed a joint Rule 60(b)/62.1 motion asking Judge Analisa Torres to dissolve last year’s injunction and redistribute the $125 million civil penalty now sitting in escrow — $50 million would satisfy the SEC; the remaining $75 million would be returned to Ripple.

The filing also proposes that, if Torres signals she is inclined to grant it, both sides will seek a limited remand from the Second Circuit so the district court can enter a revised final judgment and terminate all appeals.
Critically, the Second Circuit has already paused those appeals and ordered the SEC to file a simple status report by 15 August 2025. That administrative date — now being mis-read as a litigation deadline, doesn’t mean the final decision will take until 2026.

Judge Torres’ July 2023 summary-judgment split the case, holding that institutional sales of XRP were unregistered securities offerings but programmatic exchange sales were not. After remedies briefing, she entered a $125 million penalty and a permanent injunction in August 2024. Both sides noticed appeals, but in March 2025 the SEC withdrew its challenge to the programmatic-sales ruling and signalling a broader retreat from crypto-first enforcement. The parties then began settlement talks that produced the current joint motion.

The renewed request goes further than the May version Torres rejected for procedural defects: it lays out “exceptional circumstances” — chiefly, the policy shift at the SEC and the parties’ mutual interest in ending the litigation — that courts require before modifying a final judgment under Rule 60(b)(6). If Torres issues the “indicative ruling” the motion seeks, the case would likely return to her docket on limited remand and close swiftly without full appellate briefing.

Morgan concedes that total settlement failure is “not impossible.” If Torres were to deny the joint motion and decline to dissolve the injunction, both sides would revive their cross-appeals. That procedural reset could indeed postpone a conclusive ruling into late 2026 — but only under that narrow, two-step scenario he deems “improbable”.

At press time, XRP traded at $1.99.
