Battlefield 6 rumoured to get a battle royale mode as leaker finds footage of an exploding dam

by admin June 22, 2025

Some raw footage has leaked of a cinematic moment in Battlefield 6 (or Battlefield Now, or Battlefield Big War, or whatever Electronic Arts are planning to call their next western military interventionism sim). The video sees the player escaping from a collapsing dam at the last minute as bomber jets launch a payload at the big concrete waterstopper. The footage is silent, but you can insert the manly yells of “Go! Go! Go!” easily enough yourself. Perhaps more interestingly, the same leaker also provides evidence of a battle royale mode.

The footage was posted on social media by data miner “temporyal”, who has been going through the files of the Battlefield Labs playtest client, uncovering various details. It’s a very early block-out of what may become a more detailed escapade during a campaign mission, or perhaps the early workings of a trailer – who knows. Either way, there’s lots of greybox geometry, placeholder props, and unfinished animations. Kind of like watching theatre actors perform a rehearsal wearing their jogger bottoms, script in hand. But it does give you a sense of scale, and it’s a reminder that EA remain obsessed with big chunks of world infrastructure falling on top of people.

It’s not the only thing the leaker claims to have uncovered in their spelunk down the data mines. They’ve also posted images and blurbs which suggest there will be a battle royale mode. Battlefield V had a battle royale mode called “Firestorm” and Battlefield 2042 had a not-quite-battle-royale mode called “Hazard Zone”. I’m curious to see if they go trad royale with this one or add some sort of battlespice, if this mode does materialise.

There are also lore tidbits that could mean maps set in New York and Turkmenistan. As for the campaign, the miner is convinced we’ll see missions taking place in various countries “including Egypt, Tajikistan, the USA, and Gibraltar”.

But of course, all this comes deep from the guts of the game’s current playtesting client. There’s no guarantee such things will surface in the finished game. Bits of lore and other narrative text can be easily misinterpreted, and none of it is officially confirmed by EA, who have yet to reveal more details about the game. They are planning to show off a no doubt explodey trailer with more information sometime this summer, according to EA comms director Andy McNamara.

This isn’t the first leak of footage from the shooter. Following a call for playtesters early this year, some nine minutes of multiplayer footage showing the series’ long-running conquest mode were leaked from those playtests. There are tanks and drones and medics, oh my.

It is looking traditionally shooty so far. Battlefield 2042, the last game of the series, was not particularly well-received among fans of bigwar, many of whom complained that it was not fully polished on release, full of bugs and instabilities. In his review, our Ed called it “an FPS that doesn’t feel ready yet”. That’ll be why EA is going so hard on playtesting this one then.

Hitman’s Agent 47 will soon be able to assassinate Casino Royale baddy Le Chiffre

by admin June 7, 2025

Two of my words are colliding, people! Developer IO Interactive is currently updating Hitman with a new elusive target – it’s only ruddy Le Chiffre from Casino Royale!

The news was revealed this evening, with actor Mads Mikkelsen joining Geoff Keighley and IO boss Hakan Abrak to announce the Hitman x Bond collaboration. Le Chiffre will be available to hunt for free via PC and consoles soon. As in, very soon – the devs are getting it all prepped as we speak, so in a few moments or so we are go!

Hitman World of Assassination – Le Chiffre Elusive Target Trailer Summer Game Fest 2025. Watch on YouTube

Above is a little trailer for the whole thing, which takes place in Paris, and yes I am reacting perfectly normally about it all and not getting overexcited at all.

And, below’s an infographic for Agent 47’s next elusive target. As you can see, playing and killing Le Chiffre will unlock awards for 007: First Light.

“Le Chiffre is a character I have always enjoyed – he’s calculating, cold, and ruthless,” said Mads Mikkelsen. “Bringing him into the world of Hitman makes for a thrilling collaboration. Players can expect mind games, high stakes, and twists that only this character could orchestrate. To succeed, they’ll need to play their hand wisely.”

“We are beyond thrilled to welcome Mads Mikkelsen to Hitman World of Assassination,” added IO’s Hakan Abrak. “Players are really going to enjoy this new mission, which marks the return of Le Chiffre after nearly 20 years. I’m excited to see our players jump into this small taste of bigger things to come in the Bond franchise from IO Interactive.”

IO, of course, also recently lifted the lid on its upcoming Bond game. Earlier this week, we got a reveal trailer which introduced us to the young Bond at the start of his life as an agent.

But, while it may be an origin story, 007: First Light already has plenty of nods to the Bond books and films that came before.

Splitgate 2 Adds Battle Royale As Dev Dunks On Call Of Duty

by admin June 7, 2025

1047 Games cofounder Ian Proulx took the stage at Summer Game Fest on Friday to promote his new game Splitgate 2 by calling out the current state of online shooters. Eschewing the marketing speak of most of his peers at the glossy showcase, he said he wants Titanfall 3 to come out and called his new game’s surprise battle royale mode “fucking awesome” while wearing a “Make FPS Great Again” hat.

The Week In Games: A Star Wars Classic Returns & More New Releases

Splitgate 2 is a free-to-play arena-style shooter where players deploy portals to mess with physics and the fabric of reality to outwit their opponents. “I grew up playing Halo and I’m tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year and I wish we could have Titanfall 3,” Proulx said on stage alongside host Geoff Keighley. He added that the new battle roayle mode aims to combine the old-school arena shooter sensibility with a mechanic to portal to other worlds.

Out today on console and PC after a beta last month, 1047 revealed that the new mode is going live alongside the rest of the game. The subtext of Proulx’s pitch channeling President Trump’s slogan was clear: while EA cancels games and Activision leans into predictable cash-grabs, the underdog team at 1047 is shaking things up with a game by gamers for gamers.

Meanwhile, the riff on “Make America Great Again” took place shortly after a clash between Los Angeles residents and law enforcement over ICE raids in the city’s garment district only blocks from where Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Play Days industry event takes place this weekend. Trump has ordered the immigration agency to arrest a record number of people every day for deportation even as ICE detention centers are criticized for overcrowding and lack of food.

The original Splitgate launched in early access in 2019 and spiked in popularity. The party didn’t last, however, and by 2022, the studio abandoned the game to work on a new project. Last year it revealed that new project was actually just Splitgate 2.

F1 25’s Braking Point 3 delivers more Butler drama than a Downton Abbey battle royale, but I wish it had pumped the brakes a bit more often

by admin May 27, 2025

Warning: Spoilers for F1 25’s Braking Point 3 mode lie head

I’ve turned the volume on my monitor down a bit.

The Tories – read as: members of a family with generational wealth, if you’re not from the UK – are shouting at each other again. Devon Butler’s dad – a man so Tory his name’s just a mishmash of two cigarette brands – just died and left him a multinational corporation. He’s p**sed off because it turns out the old man left its finances in a state that might necessitate the closure of the racing team he likes running.

Meanwhile, Devon’s sister Callie Mayer’s also understandably miffed that Davidoff Butler has kicked the bucket, mainly because it’s meant that Devon’s nicked all of his clothes and mannerisms. Oh, and because it might jeopardise her chances of driving a competitive F1 car bankrolled by her family.

There are other people working at the team these two are big parts of, but they just kind of exist in orbit of the big Butler family strife black hole. That’s not to say F1 25’s third instalment of the Braking Point mode that offers a narrative-heavy twist on the usual jump in a car and race formula, a lot like FIFA’s The Journey, doesn’t have some good stuff to offer.

As I worked my way through its 15 chapters on the new hard difficulty setting (which proved a pretty perfect match for my skill level), the individual cutscenes and in-race scenarios that make it up were often good fun in isolation. While you won’t get much out of Braking Point if you’re not interested in Drive To Survive-esque drama with fictional team, if you’re open to an extended intro the game that gives you a chance to get up to speed with the latest entry, it suits that role. It’s certainly the first place I headed when I jumped into F1 25 this past weekend.

Modes like this have never been much more than a novelty to me, but I was keen to see where Codemasters would take Mayer’s story in particular. F1 23’s second edition of Braking Point had brought her into the picture as a landmark first female F2 champion (a thing that’s yet to be achieved in real life), and with her now firmly entrenched in an F1 seat there was plenty of room to take her tale in interesting directions.

Braking Point 3 certainly makes Callie one of its two main focuses, but only in the context of the big family drama I mentioned at the start. This year’s tale begins with Davidoff taking ownership of the Konnersport team through his company Butler Global, which is a fine setup. Both his son and fairly estranged daughter are at the team in daily big roles – Callie in the car and Devon on the management side – so plenty of chance for intrigue to simmer and play out.

Imagine your dad owning the F1 team you race for. Oh, hi Lance Stroll. | Image credit: EA/VG247

Well, that tension builds for about five minutes. Then boom, by about the third race you take part in and having been a fairly irredeemable dick to everyone thus far, Davidoff suddenly pops his clogs. Devon’s immediately installed as his replacement, both in terms of being the team owner and being the bloke that’s just really nasty to everyone. Cue lots of shouting matches between him, Callie, and team principal Casper Akkerman.

All of the cutscenes in which this plays out are well-acted and decently-written, but that’s the thing with Braking Point. In the micro, all the narrative bits are fine, but the macro storytelling really struggles to hit home. You could argue a lot of that’s down to the limitations of the format, with the mode only seeing the action happen during certain race weekends spaced out throughout the year, leaving gaps it jumps through in which you don’t get to see how the races or story are playing out.

In practice, it means that you’re jumping from one big narrative flashpoint to the next without any time to get acclimated to how the team as it’s made up as a certain time is working. The cast around the Butler kids is rotated into different positions in an attempt to make the fallout of Davidoff’s demise feel fluid, but from second driver Aiden Jackson, to Akkerman, and his temporary replacement Andreo Konner (who makes way for Devon himself to become team principal by the end), they’re all just puppets being synthetically shuffled about to suit the story.

See, I told you big Devon nicked his dad’s threads. | Image credit: EA/VG247

Akkerman aside, they lack much of a unique voice of their own, and so just exist around all of the Butler drama like that dog surrounded by fire that reckons ‘this is fine’. At the same time, the narrative hinges on how Konnersport is doing on-track in the drivers and constructors championships, but you don’t get to see how the points situation evolves. The result is a lot of tell rather than show that doesn’t feel like it meshes with how the natural drama of a real F1 season plays out.

You’ve got no data benchmark for how the teams are stacking up at specific point in a season, so therefore the mode has to tell you that Konnersport’s had a poor string of results or that Ferrari are on the surge, making situations feel a lot more manufactured. Rather than illustrating Braking Point’s on-track narratives via the same means the natural drama real F1 seasons organically generate, you’re quickly served synopses in loading screens.

This is alleviated a little bit by phone calls between characters in the menus between races, which offer a bit more time for in-depth character development and a chance to humanise these fictional humans. Braking Point 3 does also touch on and do a bit of exploration of some interesting themes, like how different people might react to losing a relative. However, it generally feels like in trying to be more like a movie or TV show in the way it tells its tale, it fails to take advantage of the inherent strengths that come with telling your story in a video game, specifically.

There is some driving, and it’s pretty fun. | Image credit: EA/VG247

By the time I was done, even though I’d made some choices with minor consequences, I felt like I’d watched a story involving some F1 unfold – I hadn’t become immersed in it, I didn’t feel like I’d stepped into the shoes of an F1 driver. Fittingly for a tale that doesn’t feature the real-world F1 teams you’re racing against in any capacity other than as silent on-track competitors to Konnersport, Braking Point 3 feels like briefly stepping into a bubble of drama largely separate from the F1 paddock. It’s a self-contained fictional universe totally separate from even the fictional reality these games deliver with their painstakingly accurate-looking simulated iteration of a real sport.

In neglecting to embrace being a story in a game, it achieves a level of artificial atmosphere Drive To Survive could only dream of, despite existing in a medium that thrives on connecting us to its version of reality in the most tactile fashion you can get outside of doing the real thing.

It fulfils its role of being a brief distraction, but I think there was potential here to do something a lot more substantive that’d have done more to help F1 25 achieve its goal of putting you in the racing boots of a real racing driver or team principal.

F1 25 releases on May 30 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with the Iconic edition offering early access from May 27. These impressions were written using a PS5 code provided by the publisher.

Gunzilla Games has announced that Off The Grid, its cyberpunk battle royale featuring a narrative by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, is coming to Steam in June. As part of the Steam launch, Off The Grid will support full crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, allowing players to link up regardless of where they’re playing the game. Fortnite is back on the US App Store, as Epic and Apple’s legal battle royale over it concludes with a 55-year-old exec tweeting the word “fam”

by admin May 21, 2025

Fortnite’s available on iOS in the US again, with Epic and Apple’s legal tussle over it seemingly having concluded, at least for now. Epic Games has at least managed to get one of the outcomes it wanted out of all the hoohah, and its CEO has reponded as only he could – by letting all know we’re his “fam”.

As we’ve recently chromicled, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney launched a fresh effort to get Apple to agree to re-admit the game to its App Store following a judge issuing a pretty damning verdict against the fruit company earlier this month. The suit was actually all about payment options and the cut Apple takes of them, in case you’ve forgotten in the five years it’s rumbled on for.

Now, though, tensions have seemigly cooled, with the two sides having concluded their bickering over Fortnite’s return to the US App Store by filing a joint notice stating they have “resolved all issues”. That’s after Epic went back to the judge presiding over the case in response to the initial trouble it appeared to be having getting the game through Apple’s review process.

“Fortnite is BACK on the App Store in the U.S. on iPhones and iPads…and on the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the E.U,” Epic has since announced, “It’ll show up in Search soon!”

“We back fam,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, a 55-year-old exec, tweeted in response to the game making its comeback. Am I being a bit harsh suggesting that it’s a bit embarrassing for someone firmly in the dad to grandad age range to be using the word fam in reference to them getting their way in some legal wranglings over who gets the cash people spend on games that turned into an argument over one game returning to one storefront? Maybe, but does have a very ‘How do you do, fellow kids’ feel to it.

Folks in the EU have been able to enjoy iOS Fortnite again for a little while now, but this is a big day for Apple users in the states who’ve been having to get their mobile Fortnite fix by listening to this song on repeat.

You can finally talk to the AI Darth Vader that’s led Epic and Llama Productions to have an unfair labour practice charge filed against them by SAG-AFTRA.
