Former Rockstar VP Talks GTA 6, Explains Why Bully 2 Never Happened

by admin September 29, 2025

In 2020, Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser left the company after over two decades as one of the driving forces behind the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises. While Houser has since launched a new company, Absurd Ventures, he recently shared his thoughts on Grand Theft Auto 6 and explained why Bully 2 never materialized.

During a panel appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con (via IGN), Houser was asked about how he feels regarding GTA 6, the first Grand Theft Auto game in decades that he had no involvement with.

“I think it’s a great privilege to have worked on something that big–you know, I wrote the last 10 or 11 of them, so I think the world’s probably had enough GTA from me … There’s always a new story, so it’s not going to be a story that I wrote or a character set that I developed. I think it’s going to be exciting. The game will be great, I’m sure.”

Houser has previously voiced his desire to see a sequel to Bully, the 2006 game set at a boarding school. When he was asked about the reasons why Bully 2 didn’t come to pass, Houser cited “bandwidth issues,” before adding, “If you’ve got a small lead creative team and a a small senior leadership crew, you just can’t do all the projects you want … With certainly how we’re structuring it, [we were] trying to do two projects with a very fairly small team, and just really trying to think through that. ‘How can we do that and keep them both moving?'”

Picking a favorite game from his time at Rockstar proved to be difficult for Houser. He noted that Red Dead Redemption 2 was “the best thing that I worked on [and the] best single kind of realization of open-world storytelling thematic consistency and understanding how the games are assembled to take you on an an emotional journey.” He also cited GTA 4, GTA 5, Bully, and Red Dead Redemption as some of his best experiences at Rockstar.

Houser’s next project is a comic book miniseries called American Caper, which will be released by Dark Horse Comics on November 12. He also said that Absurd Ventures’ first video games will be a currently untitled “open-world third-person comedy,” and A Better Paradise, which he described as “a third-person dystopian tragedy.” Both games are still early in development.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser opens up on Bully 2: “You just can’t do all the projects you want”

by admin September 28, 2025

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has opened up on why we never received a follow-up to 2006’s Bully.

Talking to IGN at LA Comic Con, House was asked why he never returned to Jimmy’s life despite Bully’s popularity and critical acclaim, and his response was both candid and probably a little frustrating for those who’d been patiently waiting for Bully 2, as he simply attributed it to “bandwidth issues”.

“I think it was just bandwidth issues,” Houser admitted (thanks, InsiderGaming). “You know, if you’ve got a small lead creative team, and a small senior leadership crew, you just can’t do all the projects you want.

“And you know, we certainly– how we’re structured at [Houser’s current studio] Absurd [Ventures], we’re doing two projects with a fairly small team, and it’s really trying to think through that. How can we do that and keep them both moving?”

He blames it on “bandwidth issues”.

Since its unveiling in June 2023, Absurd Ventures has announced two “universes” – American Caper and A Better Paradise – intended to form the basis of multiple transmedia projects, beginning with a graphic novel and podcast, respectively. Meanwhile, a job advertisement spotted in May 2024 confirmed Absurd’s first video game project is also in the works, and after a difficult year for Immortals of Aveum developer Ascendant Studios, a “core team” of around 20 employees decamped to Absurd this time last year, establishing a new studio now known as Absurd Marin.

As for Rockstar’s primary project at the moment? GTA 6 is currently expected to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 26th May 2026, following its not exactly unexpected delay earlier this year. And there’s little doubt it’s going to be big; as recently Take-Two confirmed, GTA 5 has now sold an astonishing 210m copies since its release 12 years ago, so it’s probably not unreasonable to presume its massively anticipated sequel will manage to match that and then some.

Rockstar Just Made 65,000 GTA 6 Fans Panic For No Reason

by admin September 20, 2025

In the span of about 20 seconds and with just a single Discord ping, Rockstar Games got 65,000+ people, nearly all of whom are waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6‘s launch, very excited and then crushed their hopes, dreams, and happiness.

On September 19, at precisely 3:20 p.m. EST, Rockstar Games posted a single message in the GTA Online section of the company’s official Discord server. The message was simply Rockstar Games acknowledging a bug involving a GTA Online weekly challenge that was supposed to unlock a piece of in-game clothing for those who completed it, but wasn’t working properly. Pretty basic GTA Online update. But for some reason, Rockstar Games followed that message up with an “@here.” They did this in a server with 68,097 members. Uh oh!

For those who don’t use Discord, dropping “@here” pings everyone in the server channel unless they specifically opt out of notifications. And most people don’t do that, especially not in Rockstar’s Discord server, where desperate fans cling to the hope that at any time, the studio could drop a new trailer for GTA 6.  Rockstar Games has also not really done this before. So that random “@here” instantly caused around 68,000 fans to freak the fuck out. Making matters worse is that for many, myself included, the notification simply appeared as “Rockstar Games – @here” with no further context.

I’ll fully admit that when I first saw it, I assumed the company was making some big random announcement about GTA 6. Instead, what I found when I opened Discord was a lot of confused, sad, and angry fans who weren’t sure why Rockstar had done this to them all. “Why!” “Whattt?” “Shut up!” “WTF?!” “No GTA 6??” “Stop it!” and “HOLY SHIT WHY” were just some of the hundreds and hundreds of messages that whizzed by my eyes when I opened Discord shortly after the ping.

I’ve reached out to Rockstar Games about the Discord ping and why it decided to do this. But whatever the reason, it won’t change the fact that for a brief and chaotic moment, 65,000+ people went wild thinking they were about to watch a new GTA 6 trailer or get news of another delay. Nope. There’s no new trailer or other big announcement, and GTA 6 is still set to launch in May of next year.

Rockstar break GTA 6 silence with subtle title update

by admin September 15, 2025

Rockstar Games have broken their months-long silence on Grand Theft Auto 6 with a slight update to the name of the game that you may have missed.

The Grand Theft Auto developers are notoriously difficult to get new information from. Rockstar hasn’t shown anything off to the public at events like Gamescom or Summer Games Fest for a number of years, and any announcement is on their terms.

They proved that back in May by announcing a delay to Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date. The GTA devs shifted the release from Holiday 2025 to May 26, 2026, and dropped the long-awaited second trailer in the aftermath.

Since then, Rockstar have gone back to being ultra secretive about Grand Theft Auto 6. They’ve not even dropped a mention about it in GTA Online. However, they have broken their silence.

Subtle GTA 6 title change mentioned by Rockstar

As spotted by Rockstar Intel, the Grand Theft Auto developers posted a job listing for a Lead Software Engineer in Data Engineering at Rockstar New York.

In the listing, the game developers note that their upcoming title “will be the largest game launch in history.” That is obvious, but they also referred to the game as GTA 6 for the first time.

“With the continued growth of Grand Theft Auto Online and the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6,” the listing reads. As Rockstar Intel points out, the developers have regularly used Grand Theft Auto VI to this point, not the number six. They have also just referred to the game as “a new Grand Theft Auto.”

They also noted that it could very well be a mistake from whichever recruiter posted the listing for Rockstar. Yet, you would assume that it would at least be looked over with a fine-tooth comb because of how rabid Grand Theft Auto fans are.

It’s not like Rockstar are going to wedge a mention of Vice City or even Jason and Lucia into the title anytime soon, but the slight tweak is noteworthy.
