Hue takes on cheaper rivals with the entry-level Essential smart bulb lineup

by admin September 4, 2025

Hue just did its biggest product launch ever as part of IFA 2025 and a key product is the new entry-level Essential smart bulb lineup. Though still not as cheap as some products you can find on Amazon, it’s designed to take on budget rivals like Govee and Aqara with bulbs starting under $20.

The new range includes A19 bulbs, GU10 spots and strip lights with and without color options. Effectively, you’re not losing a lot compared to the regular color/white bulbs. They still run on the same platform and offer Bluetooth out of the box along with extra features enabled when using a bridge or Matter-over-Thread.

To highlight the differences, Hue released a feature comparison sheet. You can’t dim the Essential bulbs as much, they offer a reduced range of whites (2200 to 6500K compared to 1000 to 20000K) and color quality is less accurate. The latter is arguably the most important feature for folks who use smart bulbs to sync with their TVs or require precise matching between bulbs.

You’ll be able to buy the Hue Essential bulbs starting this month, with the new A19 bulbs priced at $25 individually or $60 in a four-pack. The Essential strip light arrives in December for $60 in a 5 meter length (16 feet) or $100 for 10 meters (33 feet). You can also grab the A19 bulb in a starter kit in the US starting at $80 for the Essential E27 2 pieces and Hue Bridge V2, up to $100 for the Essential E27 4 pieces and Hue Bridge V2.

Another primary piece of Hue’s smart lighting puzzle is the Hue Bridge Pro. It has a more serious black look compared to the white models of the past to signify the extra power. That includes five times the processing performance and 15 times the memory of the Hue Bridge V2 that came out 10 years ago.

Along with the extra power, the Huge Bridge Pro debuts a new feature called Hue Motion Aware. That transforms Hue Bulbs (including 95 percent of existing models) into motion sensors able to detect movement and trigger actions or security alerts.

Hue says you can easily upgrade a current Hue Bridge “with just a few clicks,” and Signify will release support for combining multiple Bridges into a single Bridge Pro by year’s end. The Bridge pro arrives in North America in September 2025 for $90.

Hue also refreshed its strip lighting with several new products including the flagship OmniGlow (starting at $140 for a 3 meter length and arriving in November), the first Hue strip with no visible hotspots via CSP tech to accent your decor with a seamless glow. It also introduced the Flux lineup with indoor, outdoor, ultra-bright and neon options (in sizes up to 10m) starting at $70 for 3 meters, for applications ranging from indoor accents to outdoor facades. Also new are the Festavia string lights that can be used for holiday decor or year round in a permanent model for rooflines, patios and balconies. Those start at $160 for 7m lengths or $120 for 9 meters for the permanent model with availability in September.

Signify also introduced a new A19 bulb that can replicate the entire spectrum of daylight while offering 40 percent great efficiency compared to its predecessor. Finally, the company announced a Sonos partnership that will allow you to operates Philips Hue lights using voice controls, and eventually “integrate light and sound in new intuitive ways.”

Marvel Rivals Is Coming To Your Old, Dying PS4 Later This Month

by admin September 4, 2025

Marvel Rivals is launching soon on a new platform. No, the popular superhero online PVP shooter isn’t coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Instead, NetEase has quietly announced that Rivals is getting a PS4 port. I can already imagine how loud an old PS4 will sound when Doctor Strange creates a portal.

On September 3, NetEase released a new trailer for the upcoming fourth season of Marvel Rivals, “Heart of the Dragon.” The new season arrives on September 12 and brings Daredevil to the game’s already large roster. However, at the very end of this slick, action-packed story trailer, NetEase included a bit of news. Seen briefly in the final moments of the trailer is the logo for the PlayStation 4. It seems the online superhero game is getting a last-gen port.

Word of this PS4 port first appeared earlier this week, with dataminers finding evidence on the PlayStation Store’s back end of a new PS4 version of Marvel Rivals. Today’s new teaser seems to confirm that, yes, NetEase is porting its blockbuster superhero game to the aging PS4. Sony’s old home console launched back in November 2013, nearly 12 years ago. And yet, Marvel Rivals will soon be playable on the old hardware. Some fans are confused as to why Rivals is making the backward leap to PS4 while it still lacks a Switch 2 port. It would seem logical that if Rivals can run on PS4, it can likely run on a Switch 2. Perhaps a lack of dev kits is to blame?

Regardless of all that, it is extremely wild to me that Marvel Rivals is launching on PS4 in 2025. This is a console that launched during the tail end of the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a machine that arrived when Barack Obama was still president of the United States. And soon you’ll be able to play Marvel Rivals on it. Sure, it’s not the first time we’ve seen a current-gen game go backwards with a PS4 port. But it is still odd.

Marvel Rivals Season Four Adds Daredevil and Angela To The Roster, Launches Next Week

by admin September 3, 2025

Season four of Marvel Rivals is officially known as The Heart of the Dragon, and it’s introducing one character fans of the (super) hero shooter have been hoping for: Daredevil. In the cinematic reveal trailer, he faces off against Angela, the long lost sister of Thor and the other character joining the roster. You can check it out for yourself below.

The trailer shows the two characters seemingly acting as representatives of Heaven and Hell. This is a particularly interesting take on Daredevil, as his stories, especially in the recent live-action series, traditionally focus on street-level crime with minimal super powers. In this trailer, he also seems to unleash energized punches and a powerful devil form. It’s hard to tell what his canonical abilities are, versus what are stylized visuals for the animation, but Marvel Rivals sometimes provides original takes on characters and their origin stories, so it could go either way.

“The Timestream Entanglement has drawn the Seven Capitals together, forming the Heart of Heaven. After Knull’s fall, Hela is imprisoned in the An’Hay-Zhidi, where Dizang—Devil of the Eighth City—dares her to atone for her sins,” the video description reads. “But Angela will not forgive her betrayal. She arrives in the Heart of Heaven demanding Hela be handed over, yet its guardian refuses to surrender someone under his protection. Justice will be served and a debt will be paid.”

In a following, more detailed video, the developers at Netease confirm that Angela would be a vanguard, using her ichor to form weapons and a shield. She’ll also get a team-up with Thor, who will be able to throw a thunder spear which he can jump to, dealing damage upon landing. Other team ups are adjusting as well: Magik and Black Panther are losing theirs, but Magik is getting a tether ability as a part of the team up between Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange, while Black Panther is joining the team up between Namor and Hulk.

Season four will also bring other, more minor new features. A new arcade hub will hold new and returning modes like big brain blast, clone rumble, conquest, conquest (annihilation), and doom match, along with free fight, which removes limits on duplicate heroes. You’ll also be able to mark your preferred heroes into a favorites tab, other players can see custom ultimate effects, and, hilariously, they’re adding a slow walk setting to the PC version of the game because they “heard how much you like slow walking for superhero aura farming.”

Lastly, they announced that rank placement matches are coming to the game eventually, but won’t be ready in time for season four. Players have expressed frustration that each season resets them so far down the competitive ladder that it’s frustrating to have to fight through lower ranks with less skilled players to get back to their standard challenge, and placement matches are a possible solution to that.

Angela and the rest of Marvel Rivals season four come to the game for free a week from Friday, on September 12.

Marvel Rivals dev’s transparent, 18-minute breakdown of how ranked isn’t rigged fails to placate players who hate losing

by admin August 22, 2025

To prove to the growing number of players who think Marvel Rivals’ ranked mode is rigged or somehow unfair, the official X account dropped a video that reveals a surprising amount of detail about why that’s totes not the case.

Lead combat designer Zhiyong spends a packed 18 minutes explaining the math that determines how high you climb based on ranked wins and how the matchmaking system tries to create fair games. The gist is that Marvel Rivals works like a lot of other competitive games, but because there are six-player teams and a roster of wildly different heroes it has to do some guesswork that won’t always lead to perfectly balanced matches.

It’s true that you might be put on a team with people who aren’t as good as you, but the system takes that into account when calculating how much a win or loss is worth. A player who performs much better than their team and still loses won’t be punished as hard, for example. But as you go up in ranks, personal performance isn’t weighted as heavily in the calculation.

Related articles

Your individual performance on a hero is compared to every other player on the same hero at the same rank. The system then combines the averages for all your teammates and determines your team’s total average skill level. In a match where your team’s level is higher than the enemy team’s, you’ll gain fewer competitive points for winning and drop more points for losing.

The matchmaking system tries to match teams with the closest skill levels and will do its best to pit groups of players against other groups rather than people playing solo. But because of the number of variables with server regions and fluctuating skill levels, the teams are rarely perfectly even.

We’ve heard your feedback on matchmaking and ranking in Marvel Rivals, and your voices matter! Check out our Lead Combat Designer, Zhiyong, as he shares our developer insights on the matchmaking and ranking system. Watch the full video to see the systems behind the game! pic.twitter.com/OmErw2WMgUAugust 21, 2025

Anyone who has heard Blizzard talk about Overwatch’s ranked system will be familiar with a lot of this. Marvel Rivals isn’t very different apart from the fact that it doesn’t have a way to queue for a specific role you want to play, which Zhiyong says wouldn’t actually fix the problem of unbalanced matches.

However, Zhiyong doesn’t address what would happen if Marvel Rivals introduced placement matches to calibrate your skill level up front instead of gradually over time. Many players believe that this would make matches fairer when ranks are reset every season. It sounds like the studio has considered it, according to a reply from executive producer Danny Koo on X where he said he’s “on the placement side of things.”

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

There aren’t any huge revelations in the video if you’re familiar with competitive games. Zhiyong lays out what looks to be a fairly standard system for hero shooters, and he re-confirms that the game doesn’t use Engagement Optimized Matchmaking (EOMM) that ignores your skill level and feeds you wins to keep you hooked.

Even with the surprisingly in-depth explanation, not everyone is happy. Such is the curse of competitive games, I guess. There will always be players who believe the system is built to punish you with idiot teammates and loss streaks and not that probability plays a larger role than they’d think. Not that there isn’t room for improvement, but assuming there’s a way to achieve perfectly balanced matches for every single player is wishful thinking.

Marvel Rivals devs approved to make “original” heroes & fans are fuming

by admin August 19, 2025

Marvel Rivals’ creative director has just revealed that the game has permission to add new original characters in the roster. This news hasn’t immediately gone down well with the community.

The Marvel Rivals roster is always expanding, as developers continue to incorporate new characters from the franchise’s comics and movies into every season.

While characters added to the game have so far been mostly icons that a lot of players grew up seeing in other media, we’ve also seen the game not shying away from introducing more obscure characters, such as Luna Snow and Jeff the Land Shark.

As it now turns out, according to an interview with MP1st, NetEase has essentially been given permission to develop “original characters” for the game, so there’s a chance that we’ll be seeing completely new faces joining the roster.

Marvel Rivals could be adding original characters to the roster

netease / marvelPhoenix and Blade are the newest characters added to the game in the current season.

In the interview, MP1st asked Guangguang if NetEase considered adding completely original heroes that may be introduced to the whole Marvel universe later.

Although the developer did not specify the details further, he did give “yes” as an answer. “We are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, the game director remained tight-lipped when asked about the development as a follow-up to the question, only saying “stay tuned” for now.

While the thought of being able to try out and play new heroes is exciting, many in the community have said they aren’t too keen on the idea of original characters being added.

A lot of the complaints come mainly from them preferring to play someone that they’re already familiar with in the franchise.

As one user put it in a post on X, “This sucks a lot. I want to play the heroes I grew up with. There are THOUSANDS of them, from A-listers to C-listers. There is no need AT ALL to create new characters when they can just use what we already have.”

“We have SO many characters that people want added, and now we’re fighting for spots with original characters? Oh no,” said another, while a different user stressed that actual Marvel characters should “take priority.”

That said, there was also an argument mentioning that introducing these kinds of characters could help fill the gaps in different roles in-game. Either way, we’ll just have to be patient for the time being and wait to see what the devs are cooking.

Marvel Rivals May Get Something No One Asked For: Original Heroes

by admin August 19, 2025

The Marvel universe is so vast that games like hero shooter Marvel Rivals and fighting game Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls already have a virtually endless bucket of characters to draw on for their growing rosters. Nevertheless, it sounds like NetEase is at least considering making its own original heroes for Marvel Rivals at some point. You know, if that was something you ever thought about.

MP1st asked Marvel Rivals director Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen if NetEase had considered adding heroes of its own to fight alongside Marvel staples like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four in a future season. After all, other Marvel projects like the MCU movies have created new characters. Would it be out of the question for Rivals to also indulge in making people up to capture an objective or push a payload? Well, Chen says that Marvel has given the team the green light to do that. While he told MP1st the team is “allowed to introduce original characters,” Chen played coy when asked if any are coming down the pipeline, merely saying “stay tuned.”

Maybe my immediate aversion to this is just because Marvel Rivals isn’t even a year old yet, and the thought that someone’s favorite comic book mainstay could get sidelined for some OC cooked up in the NetEase offices feels bad. However, Luna Snow, one of the most popular characters in Marvel Rivals, also started as an original character in the mobile game Marvel Future Fight, which has been a point of contention considering all the attention she gets in terms of cosmetics compared to fan-favorite heroes who originate from the comics. I don’t doubt some interesting heroes might come out of this, but you’re still covering the classics, NetEase, so I hope any original characters you might introduce come after you’ve spent a bit more time filling out the roster with established heroes people are still waiting for.
