After suffering an influx of overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews, can Capcom turn around Monster Hunter Wilds with the upcoming Title Update 2?

Monster Hunter Wilds has been having a rough time of it lately. Over the course of the past week, Capcom’s seventh ‘main’ Monster Hunter title has racked up over 2,000 negative reviews. Most embittered reviewers are lamenting the game’s poor PC performance, whilst others criticise Capcom for the poor optimisation and lack of PC-specific support.

Others bemoan the much slower update cadence the game has received since launch – which is quite light when compared with the previous two games in the series, World and Rise. A popular post by Monster Hunter megafan and content creator, ShinCry, which you can see below, highlights the somewhat scant offering Wilds has had compared to the previous games in the same timespan.

Whilst most of the reviews are fixated on the technical (specifically citing crashes, stuttering, and visual bugs in Wilds), others are getting frustrated with the lack of communication from Capcom, that has been somewhat tight-lipped on what – if anything – it plans to do about all the negative feedback. One complaint fans repeatedly raise about the game is the difficulty and the lack of end-game content – something very important in the health of a Monster Hunter title. “[Capcom] charged $70 for a game that feels like it has less content than its precursors,” reads one highly-rated Steam review, for example.

Some even claim that the updates Capcom has added since the game’s launch on February 28th have made PC performance worse. And that’s saying something. All eyes are on the next big content drop in the game, coming 30th June: can this update address all the issues players have with Capcom’s tentpole release for 2025? Probably not, but at least all of us carving enthusiasts have something to look forward to.

Officially, we know that we’re getting at least one “fan-favourite” monster as part of Title Update 2: Lagiacrus, the underwater leviathan. Thanks to a (now removed) update on the Monster Hunter Wilds page on the PlayStation Store, however, we also know more about what we can expect from the incoming update.

The page disclosed that we’re actually getting two “fan-favourite” monsters in this update. Datamines around the game suggest this may be Seregios – known to long-time fans of the series as ‘Steve’ for ridiculous fandom-related reasons – which will hopefully prove to be a tougher opponent than many of the monsters seen in-game to date. As well as the leviathan and Steve, which is based on the real-world Secretary Bird, we will also get an Arch-Tempered Uth Duna, layered weapons to satiate the needs of all the Fashion Hunters out there, and a couple more events over the coming weeks and months.

But will this be enough? Capcom still hasn’t said much about planned performance improvements for the title, nor has it promised balance changes or tweaks providing extra challenge to seasoned pros itching for more of a fight. We’re going to get more solid news about this update at this week’s Capcom Spotlight on Thursday, 26th June, but many fans are dubious about their actual issues being addressed.

At the time of writing, Monster Hunter Wilds has just one percent of the concurrent players it did at launch; that’s not surprising in itself, since we’re a good five months out from launch, but given how ‘sticky’ past Monster Hunter games have been, figures like that will no doubt be setting alarm bells off at Capcom HQ.

I love the Seregios fight, and I think the wounds system and slightly more mobile play style in Wilds will really suit the monster. So I know I’ll be jumping back in to enjoy that, and see how it all works within Wilds’ more developed ecosystem. But I play on console, and the version I play does not suffer from the same issues disenfranchised Steam players have been kicking up such a fuss about over the past week.

I also think a more robust and varied set of events can help turn things around for Wilds. So far, many of the special event quests added to the game have offered insignificant or otherwise forgettable rewards for players, and I wasn’t even that enthused by the Street Fighter collaboration that was added to the game in May, and I’m a bonafide Street Fighter apologist.

Capcom has generated a lot of positive consumer sentiment in the past few years. Between great quality games, a selection of interesting products across multiple genres, and – usually – pretty good comms with its players, the publisher has garnered quite the reputation. To see it marred by out-of-character post-launch support for Wilds seems odd. I know game development takes longer, and drinks more resources, than it did back in the World and Rise cycles, but you’d think the publisher would be keen to press that message publicly, instead of sitting back and letting players stew like they are as we’re awaiting the deployment of Title Update 2.

I think Capcom has what it takes to turn the fortunes of Monster Hunter Wilds around. It took seven patches for the publisher to figure out the issues with Dragon’s Dogma 2 back in 2024, and I’m just hoping Capcom can work that same engineering magic with Monster Hunter Wilds before it’s too late.

After all, I do not want to have to wait until the inevitable Sunbreak- or Iceborne-style DLC in order to really get the most out of what I think has the potential to be one of the best games in the series.

Remedy has shared its plans to improve FBC: Firebreak, the new multiplayer Control spinoff, following a string of less-than-stellar reviews that criticized the game’s rough early hours. FBC: Firebreak was announced in October 2024 as the first online multiplayer game from Remedy, and another pitstop on the way to an eventual Control 2.

The full patch notes for Remedy’s first update are available to view on Steam, but in brief, the biggest change the developer is making is to how missions are unlocked. Previously, Firebreak required players to play a simpler, shorter version of the game’s missions (like dealing with multiplying post-it notes or pink goo, for example), before a more complex version of the mission became available. Now those full-fat missions are available from the start, and completing one unlocks the next type. Remedy’s update also rebalances the cost of cosmetics and makes it easier to see and find in-game collectibles, among other tweaks.

The developer is planning to make larger changes to how FBC: Firebreak explains the synergies of in-game weapons and abilities, but those onboarding improvements will take longer to implement. Future updates adding new missions and cosmetics where already planned for the game, so fixes will presumably be worked into the existing roadmap.

We enjoyed our hands-on time with FBC: Firebreak, but reviewers report a less rosy picture after playing the game over a longer period of time. Eurogamer found Firebreak charming in Remedy’s typical oddball way, but also inconsistent in terms of difficulty. GameSpot noted similar messiness in the game’s mission design, and also the general lack of explanation for weapons and abilities. The more damning and existential problem highlighted by TechRadar is the dearth of story in the game, something that Control generally excelled at. Remedy doesn’t appear to have a plan to address any perceived narrative shortcomings in FBC: Firebreak, and since it’s a multiplayer game, the company may just have different goals.

FBC: Firebreak is available now for $40 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. If you pay for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, you can play the game at no additional cost.

Stellar Blade Steam Reviews Say It’s More Than Just A Goon Time

Stellar Blade is a mashup of classic arcade action and modern Soulslike about a defense force officer with big tits and an even bigger ass saving the post-apocalyptic ruins of Earth from the aliens who destroyed it. Paradise lost? Not for the gooners, or for general fans of fun combat in cool sci-fi settings held together by the sensibilities of an old-school PlayStation 2 game.

The 2024 PS5 exclusive recently came to PC where it sold over one million new copies in just three days, making it one of the most successful PlayStation ports ever. South Korea developer Shift Up is already working on a sequel that will, according to its director, Hyung-Tae Kim, feature an improved story with a more serious tone. In the meantime, everyone who worked on Stellar Blade just got a Switch 2, which the game is also rumored to be getting ported to in the near future.

How are PC players receiving the current entry? Steam reviews so far are glowing, with a rating of over 94 percent positive among the nearly 20,000 currently posted. In addition to widescreen support and uncapped framerates, new DLC was also released alongside the PC port’s arrival. A fresh patch this week fixed some bugs, including ones that were impacting keyboard use, while modders are already throwing caution to the wind.

One that makes protagonist Eve nude is currently under moderation at Nexus Mods. I’m shocked. Shocked! Stellar Blade’s director recently suggested he has no issue with fans modding the game however they please. However, most of the mods are just about improving PC performance and tweaking gameplay. One of the most popular lengthens the timing window for perfect parries. Here’s what Steam reviewers are saying about the rest of the game:

28 Years Later quickly breaks 28 Days Later record after first reviews

28 Years Later has been hailed as one of the best movies of 2025, and it’s already broken one of 28 Days Later’s records before its release.

The long-awaited film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, picks up – you guessed it – 28 years on from the events of the first movie.

While Cillian Murphy is expected to return in the next sequel (titled The Bone Temple), this movie will follow new characters; specifically, Spike (Alfie Williams), the son of Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and Isla (Jodie Comer). They live on a small island linked to the rest of the country by a single causeway, but they’re forced to venture back onto the mainland.

Considering the original film is one of the best horror movies of all time (28 Weeks Later is good too), expectations have been high for 28 Years Later – and, if anything, it appears to have exceeded them.

28 Years Later is rated higher than 28 Days Later on Rotten Tomatoes

28 Years Later is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% score. That’s a big achievement, considering 28 Days Later has an 87% score.

28 Weeks Later is widely considered to be the worst film in the series – but even then, that still has a 72% score.

It’s also Danny Boyle’s highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes, followed by 127 Hours (93%), Slumdog Millionaire (91%), and Trainspotting (90%).

In our review, we wrote: “There are moments where 28 Years Later awkwardly combines genres, with comedy and tragedy rubbing shoulders with action and horror, sometimes in the same scene. But the movie works best when telling a simple story of the love between mother and son.”

This won’t be the last record set by 28 Years Later, either. The first film grossed $84.6 million worldwide, while its sequel made $65.8 million.

28 Years Later is practically guaranteed to make more than that. As per Deadline, it’s looking at a $56 million opening weekend. With word of mouth already strong, it could have long legs into July, though it’ll have to retain theatrical space alongside Jurassic World, Superman, and Fantastic Four.

Trade body TIGA has responded to the spending review outlined by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, calling the government’s commitment to increasing funding for the creative industries as “encouraging.”

Reeves’ spending review was published on June 11. It included a “significant increase in funding to support regional growth and drive innovation, develop creative places, and ensure the UK’s creative industries remain world-leading,” designating the creative industries as one of the government’s eight growth driving sectors.

In a statement, the organization said: “The Government’s commitment to ‘a significant increase in funding for the creative industries as one of the government’s eight growth driving sectors’ is encouraging. We look forward to seeing the specific policies that will be set out in the Creative Industries Sector Plan and the forthcoming Industrial Strategy White Paper.

“Plans in the [spending review] for capital investment, investment in education and for the British Business Bank are also positive,” TIGA CEO, Dr Richard Wilson OBE, added. “The UK games industry will also be looking with interest to the Autumn Budget. The single most important measure that the Government can take to drive investment, employment and studio growth in the UK video games industry is to enhance the Video Games Expenditure Credit.

“In our submission to Government, as well as emphasising the importance of investing in the UK Games Fund, we suggested that it could consider raising the rate of VGEC from 34 per cent to 39 per cent; raising qualifying expenditure from 80 per cent to 100 per cent; and or introducing an Independent Games Tax Credit (IGTC) with a rate of 53 per cent on 80 per cent of qualifying costs, on budgets for games of up to £23.5 million, in line with the existing Independent Film Tax Credit. One or more of these reforms would help to keep the UK a leading location for game development globally, boost investment, create high skilled jobs, and encourage the growth of games clusters throughout the UK.”

Earlier this year, TIGA announced the appointment of four new board members from across the UK games industry.

Every WWDC should end with a song composed of app reviews

Partway through WWDC 2025, I started tracking every time I heard the word “delightful.” I might have missed a few, but there were at least eight times when some exec was insisting to me that an element of the upcoming iOS 26, macOS Tahoe and Apple’s other platforms merited the adjective. And maybe some people truly do feel unfettered joy about UI design, but that’s the sort of attitude in these events that makes me roll my eyes.

Apple always tries very hard to inject levity and personality into its keynotes. Most of the time, that winds up leaning on cringe from Craig Federighi, who seems quite affable about being the punchline. Sometimes I smirk a little, but again, more often than not, it’s another eye-roll. That was the case this year, as Apple bludgeoned us with a tie-in for its upcoming F1 movie, which already leans pretty hard on product placement.

Then there’s the developer devotion. Yes, Apple needs devs to use its tools and programs. Yes, the company can and should give them some kudos. But sometimes, the adulation that I’ve heard heaped on the WWDC audience in the past is so cheesy, so over-eager that it flies way past sincerity and into schlock.

Just as I was ready to turn off the stream, the curtain rose on a grand piano. And to my surprise, the final three minutes of a full band performing real reviews of apps became the actual highlight of WWDC for me.

This isn’t an original idea. Reviews, good and bad, are well-mined fodder for comedians and social media content. Jimmy Fallon, James Corden and others have made musical gags a staple of recent late night talk shows. But the way Apple decided to do it this year was, in a word, delightful.

Each review was heartfelt or dopey or both; see “saved my marriage” for Citymapper and “If this doesn’t win best app of the year, I’ll eat my shoe” for Lost in Play. It took the essential internet wisdom of “don’t read the comments” and turned it into gold. This silly little song managed to do everything Apple wants to do at WWDC in a really amusing package. It’s the dev props, it’s the splashy production, it’s legit entertainment.

For anyone who, like me, was actually humming the tune even after the stream ended, the video is up as a standalone on YouTube and was performed by soul/R&B singer Allen Stone. And to whatever producer came up with this idea: you have my utmost appreciation. Six out of five stars indeed.

AMD claims ‘regional market demand’ is why we’ve seen few 8 GB RX 9060 XT reviews, implying low VRAM isn’t really for the West

Budget GPU launches over the last couple of months should have been received with mainstream excitement, but this has been hampered not just by real-world pricing issues but also by VRAM. Gamers haven’t seemed particularly happy with 8 GB options, especially when first Nvidia and then AMD seemed to keep them away from the bulk of popular reviewers. And on this point, AMD claims to have an explanation.

Veritable PC hardware demigod Linus Tech Tips (LTT) has shared what is implied to be a communication from AMD with the company stating that the lack of 8 GB AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics cards given to popular reviewers is due to “regional market demand.” This is similar to what Nvidia has told us before.

Specifically, AMD says: “As for the 8 GB models, AMD has enabled global reviews of both 16 GB and 8 GB models of the Radeon RX 9060 XT based on regional market demand. So in short, yes, there are some other global publications that are receiving 8 GB models for testing.”

We ourselves received just a 16 GB version of the new graphics card which launched yesterday, and it looks like most others received the same, with only a couple of reviewers being given an 8 GB version (Uniko’s Hardware, for instance).

The concern is that AMD could be trying to limit review coverage of the 8 GB version because it knows it will be slated by the western media as not good enough for gaming in modern titles at higher resolutions than 1080p. As long as initial reviews are for the 16 GB version, positive opinion might be cemented (so the thinking goes).

8 GB can get you by at 1080p, and it can do less asset-rich games at higher resolutions, but you’ll need more VRAM than that to make the most of some AAA games even at lower resolutions and even some non-AAA games at higher resolutions.

This is the same criticism that many pitched at Nvidia when it launched the RTX 5060 Ti and seemed to do the same as AMD has now done, limiting the number of 8 GB versions that go out for review. Then the RTX 5060 launched and that doesn’t have a 16 GB version at all, nor did Nvidia seem keen on letting us review that one ahead of release.

Though it’s worth noting the RTX 4060 Ti launched in 8 GB form first and 16 GB later, following consumer pressure to launch the higher VRAM version and despite Nvidia’s protestations. Also AMD launched the 8 GB RX 7600 first last generation, followed by the 16 GB RX 7600 XT.

AMD’s response to LTT implies that none of this is AMD trying to squash 8 GB reviews but is instead a simple matter of efficient distribution and marketing. If western markets don’t tend to go for the 8 GB versions, and if the media responds negatively to them, then why ship samples out for review there? Companies don’t have to ship review samples that they don’t think will be beneficial from a business standpoint, after all.

This might be true, but it only shines a light on the question of why the western market might not have much time for an 8 GB version of the RX 9060 XT. And this, arguably, comes down to pricing. Moving down from 16 GB to 8 GB won’t nerf performance massively in most games at 1080p or even 1440p, but the difference isn’t inconsequential, either. And of course there’s the question of longevity, too. Given this, it’s reasonable that many might want more than a mere $50 saving for the 8 GB version compared to the 16 GB one.

Though even at the lower price, would some still be critical of an 8 GB card? You can’t please everyone…

It’s also worth noting that based on what Nvidia has told us, it shared this view. In a previous discussion, Nvidia had told us that the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB was a good decision for markets outside the West; it’s for a global audience.

None of this detracts from the prowess of the 16 GB versions such as the one we tested, of course. The RX 9060 XT is a great card for its $349 MSRP. That’s $80 cheaper than the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB and it outpaces the latter by 14–23% at both 1080p and 1440p depending on whether you use upscaling and frame gen.

All of this price talk could, of course, be rendered pointless over the coming weeks and months depending on what real-world prices are like outside of the mythical lands of MSRP. We’ll have to wait and see.

Elden Ring Nightreign has a killer first day on Steam, but reviews are surprisingly mixed

The moment many FromSoftware fans have been waiting for has arrived. Elden Ring Nightreign, the studio’s experimental, multiplayer-only off-shoot is here, having launched worldwide overnight.

Nightreign is a special release for the storied Japanese studio in a number of ways, and it’s clear players showed up for it, regardless of how unusual of a game it is from that team.

On Steam, where Elden Ring Nightreign currently tops Steam’s top sellers chart, the game has launched to a large and dedicated audience, causing it to land a spot in the platform’s highly-competitive top five most played games.

That’s the result of its concurrent player count, which is the metric the most played games list is based on. Nightreign peaked at 313,593 concurrent players very quickly after it went live (via SteamDB), and it has over 150,000 players in-game at the time of this writing.

This is a pretty respectable turnout for any game, and it certainly makes Nightreign one of 2025’s best-performing games on Steam. Considering the game’s launch time on Thursday/Friday, there’s every chance more players will jump in at the weekend, pushing these figures even higher.

Obviously, we have little insight into how well it may be doing on consoles, but it’s very likely as successful there, too. As big as this day-one turnout is, it’s nowhere close to Elden Ring’s all-time peak of 953,426 players. Nobody expected Nightreign to beat – or even match – that colossal peak concurrent, but it is worth keeping in mind nonetheless.

Even setting aside the game that spawned it, Nightreign’s Steam peak concurrent is already among FromSoftware’s highest, well above titles like Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and any of the Dark Souls games.

Much like professional critics, however, player sentiment is also divided on the game. As things stand, 67% of 7,481 Steam user reviews are positive, which is why it’s currently sitting at a Mixed overall rating.

Believe it or not, Elden Ring itself started out pretty wobbly on the Steam review scale at its respective launch, too. Ironically, many of the same complaints about performance issues and stuttering that were common then have reemerged now. That said, Nightreign’s unique situation as a co-op-only game has created its own set of grievances, some of which have to do with the studio’s decisions surrounding the game and not necessarily its technical state.
