Two Years After Maui Burned, Researchers Reveal the Wildfire’s True Death Toll

by admin August 22, 2025

In August 2023, downed power lines on Maui, Hawaii, sparked a wildfire that quickly exploded into multiple, fast-moving blazes fanned by high winds. Over several days, the fires reduced much of the town of Lāhainā to ashes, displacing thousands and killing more than 100 people.

New research published Thursday, August 22, in the journal Frontiers in Climate suggests this disaster also caused a population-wide increase in mortality beyond what the official death count captured. By calculating the all-cause excess fatality rate—how many more deaths took place over a given period than expected—scientists found a 67% increase in the local mortality rate for August 2023. During the deadliest week of the blaze, the local death rate was 367% higher than expected. These findings underscore a need for improved disaster preparedness that incorporates Native Hawaiian ecological knowledge, the researchers concluded.

What excess death rate reveals

Looking at the excess death rate offered a fuller picture of the fire’s impact, co-first author Michelle Nakatsuka, a medical student and researcher at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, told Gizmodo in an email. “The official numbers mostly count direct causes, like burns or smoke inhalation, but excess deaths capture [the] true toll better by telling us how many more people died than would have otherwise been expected in the month of the Lāhainā fires,” she explained.

Disasters like wildfires often cause deaths in indirect ways that affect communities over time. When clinics shut down and roads are blocked off, people can’t refill their prescriptions or get dialysis treatments, Nakatsuka explained. Stress and displacement can worsen chronic conditions, and power or communication failures can delay emergency responses. “These impacts are amplified in under-resourced settings and [are] disproportionately suffered by vulnerable groups, like the elderly or people of color,” she said.

The tragic toll of the Maui fires

Even with this knowledge, Nakatsuka and her colleagues were surprised by the increase in excess mortality during the month of August 2023. Their analysis included all causes of death except covid-19. “While we anticipated an increase in excess deaths, seeing more than 80 additional deaths in the month of the Lāhainā fires was striking,” Nakatsuka said. “It was also surprising to see that the proportion of those deaths occurring outside of medical settings was larger than expected,” she added.

Indeed, the number of deaths that didn’t take place in a medical context—such as the emergency room—rose from 68% in previous months to 80% in August 2023. These people died in homes or public locations, suggesting that many were unable to reach medical care because of the fires.

A path to resilience

While all-cause excess mortality is useful for correlating increased fatalities with natural disasters, it offers little insight into the details of these deaths, Nakatsuka clarified. “The main limitation here is that we can’t say exactly which deaths were caused by the fires or look into Lāhainā-specific excess mortality; we can only measure the overall increase in deaths,” she said, adding that future research should analyze death records alongside medical and toxicology reports to identify causes of death.

Still, these findings reveal a need to improve Maui’s disaster preparedness and invest in wildfire mitigation strategies rooted in Indigenous knowledge, Nakatsuka said. “Native Hawaiian practices center around caring for the land (mālama ʻāina) in ways that naturally reduce fire risk, like restoring native plants, maintaining diverse ecosystems, and managing water resources,” she said. “Bringing Indigenous knowledge together with modern climate prediction tools will minimize risk of future climate crises and center the community’s voice at the heart of disaster prevention and recovery efforts.”

Daedalic reveal story-driven Star Trek: Voyager strategy game in which you can betray everything Janeway ever stood for

by admin August 21, 2025

Oi oi, where my Janeway fans at? Where my Parisians and my Torresians? Can I get a whoop, whoop for Chakotay? A high five for Seven of Nine? Daedalic have announced Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown, a “story-based survival strategy game” adaptation of the loneliest of the classic Treks. Created by developers gameXcite, who I may yet forgive for capitalising their name that way, it asks you to “manage systems and crew, engage in diplomacy, navigate difficult moral decisions, and face the unknown”. It’s got a cutaway dollhouse spaceship and a HUD made up to resemble a Star Trek bridge display. Also, Ensign Harry Kim is here! He wants orders. Kim, your orders are to roll that trailer.

Watch on YouTube

Here’s some blurb from the Steam page:

Set aboard the U.S.S. Voyager and deep in the unexplored reaches of the Delta Quadrant, Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown invites players to relive–and redefine–the legendary starship’s journey back to earth. The game blends exploration, ship & resource management, roguelite elements, and meaningful choices. Experience crew dynamics and a fresh take on a beloved sci-fi universe — with what-if scenarios that open up new possibilities.

If you’re like me, you are presently being torn in half by the contrast between your apathy for yet another set of “roguelike elements”, and your enthusiasm for the what-if scenarios. Maybe an episode where Janeway becomes the Borg Queen? Maybe the Doctor gets to be captain? Maybe Neelix undergoes some kind of Garrus-style reinvention as a badass with hairy ears? All that may have actually happened, I can’t remember. Some more from the Steam page:

Take a risky approach or play it safe. Be diplomatic or let phasers do the talking. Research technologies that were shunned by the crew. But: Be prepared to deal with the consequences of your actions! The game features rogue-like elements, so in each run you will encounter different situations and even iconic characters might meet an early end if you don’t react accordingly.

There’s a base-building component: you’ll add facilities to Voyager’s innards as you go, in the manner popularised by XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I’m less sold on the tiddly, top-down spaceship movement within solar systems, which recalls Mass Effect at its dinkiest and makes the Delta Quadrant seem as strange and enveloping as Center Parcs. But I do like the sound of the away missions, in which you get to handpick a team of named faces and redshirts.

“A team with skills that complement each other might be best suited for the task, but it is up to you to call the shots,” the developers comment. “Minimize the risk for the team’s members, rush headlong into danger, or take a scientific approach – you decide.” All this and, of course, ship-to-ship combat, in which you’ll assign crews to stations and target individual systems.

There’s no release date. In case it wasn’t obvious already, my excitement about this game is at least 80% nostalgia spike, with another 5% consisting of furtive teenage memories of certain saucy fan fiction websites. Finally, we can make Paris and Chakotay bone. The developers don’t have much form for space sims: going by their website, they have hitherto specialised exclusively in Asterix comic adaptations. I guess a starship is a kind of Gallic village? Let’s finish off by watching the original Voyager intro again.

by admin August 20, 2025

The official Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 release date has finally been confirmed, giving fans a clear look at when they can jump into the next chapter of Treyarch’s iconic series. Alongside the launch date, Activision has revealed key details about supported platforms, early access opportunities, and what players can expect based on the gameplay showcase.

From Campaign and Multiplayer to the return of Round-Based Zombies, Black Ops 7 promises to be an exciting entry in the subseries. Whether you’re a veteran of the franchise or a newcomer eager to dive in, here’s everything you need to know about BO7.

Plenty of time to gear up. Image via Activision

As confirmed during the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, Black Ops 7 will officially launch on Nov. 14, 2025, marking the return of Treyarch and Raven’s collaborative development for the Black Ops subseries. The game will release across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox app). Players who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass will be able to play the title from day one as part of the subscription service.

While there has been speculation about a possible launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, Activision has confirmed that the game will not be available for the console at release. However, the company has not ruled out future support for Nintendo’s hardware.

Black Ops 7 early access and open beta dates

Players eager to try the game ahead of launch will get their chance during the early access and open beta sessions taking place in early October. The early access beta begins on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 12pm CT and runs through Sunday, Oct. 5, lasting 72 hours. Immediately after, the open beta kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 12pm CT and continues until Wednesday, Oct. 8, also spanning 72 hours.

Early access is reserved for those who pre-ordered the game on any platform, console or PC, as well as eligible Game Pass subscribers. The open beta, on the other hand, will be completely free and available to everyone across all platforms.

This testing phase will mark the first opportunity for players to explore the new maps and experience the updated gameplay systems firsthand.

Black Ops 7 gameplay reveal highlights

BO7 Co-op Campaign

Set in 2035, Black Ops 7 pushes the series forward with its signature mix of near-future combat, political tension, and psychological twists. Players take on the role of David “Section” Mason (reportedly portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia), now at the helm of a JSOC unit tasked with dismantling a covert organization known as The Guild. Along the way, the campaign revisits familiar and new characters such as the notorious Raul Menéndez and The Guild’s CEO Emma Kagan, while missions span diverse backdrops including futuristic Japan, the sunlit Mediterranean coast, and mind-bending sequences that blur the line between reality and the human psyche.

For the first time in Black Ops history, the Campaign supports both solo play and drop-in co-op for up to four players. Every kill, completed objective, and milestone contributes to a unified global XP progression system that seamlessly carries over between Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, as well as Warzone, ensuring that all modes feel interconnected and rewarding.

The Co-op Campaign concludes with Endgame, a bold new mode that goes beyond a traditional final mission. Designed as a replayable experience, Endgame challenges squads to survive relentless encounters, adapt to unpredictable scenarios, and fully utilize the personalized abilities unlocked throughout the campaign. With each run offering fresh progression and surprises, players can also explore the wider world of Avalon beyond the structured missions.

BO7 Multiplayer

Multiplayer continues to be the core of CoD, and Black Ops 7 delivers with a robust lineup of 16 brand-new maps built for classic 6v6 action, complemented by two expansive 20v20 Skirmish maps.

Player movement has been overhauled with the enhanced Omnimovement system, giving matches a smoother, more responsive feel. While it avoids returning to the over-the-top sci-fi mechanics of past titles, like jetpacks and full wallrunning, it does include a wall jump mechanic for added mobility. Additionally, the removal of the default Tactical Sprint further refines pacing and balance on the battlefield.

You can also look forward to an arsenal of new weapons, scorestreaks, equipment, field upgrades, perks, and hybrid combat specialties designed to open up new strategies and ways to dominate Multiplayer.

BO7 Zombies

No Call of Duty entry feels whole without Zombies, and Black Ops 7 proudly revives the classic Round-Based Zombies format that first made the mode a fan favorite. Treyarch has teased this version as their most ambitious yet, promising larger, more intricate maps, hidden Easter eggs for dedicated hunters, and a narrative arc that runs deeper than ever before.

Beyond undead slaying, the game also reintroduces Survival maps and Dead Ops Arcade 4, while expanding customization with a wide arsenal of new weapons, attachments, and a robust camo progression system that seamlessly carries across every mode.

Game Science reveal Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new action-RPG that aims to catch Wukong players “off guard”

by admin August 20, 2025

Black Myth: Wukong developers Game Science have revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui, another single-player action-RPG steeped in Chinese mythology. It casts you as a ghost-hunting god who wanders between hell and Earth. Here’s a CG short from Gamescom’s Open Night Live 2025, which shows the fearsomely bearded Zhong Kui himself riding an extravagantly sized tiger.

Watch on YouTube

In a Q&A on the official site, the developers call the game a “tentative first step – to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design”. They want Wukong players to feel “right at home” while “catching them off guard in the best way”. That said, for now the new game remains “little more than an empty folder”, with no release date and little sense in the CG trailer of how Zhong Kui fights, compared to Wukong. I’m guessing that tiger is a useful ally, though.

We quite liked the original Black Myth, with bygone reviews editor Ed Thorn (RPS in peace) calling it “a refreshing adventure after Elden Ring’s knotty DLC”. We were less keen on the mildly draconian PR messages to certain streamers, cautioning them to avoid “feminist propaganda”, “politics” and discussion of the Chinese games industry.

These gamergatory memos followed a lengthy report from IGN about alleged workplace sexism at Game Science. The devs refused to say anything to Ed about this when he asked at a preview event. If we’re invited to preview Zhong Kui, we’ll give it another shot.

God of War Director Teases Reveal Of Next Game He’s Been Working On

by admin August 18, 2025

PlayStation fans have been waiting to hear what’s next from Sony’s God of War studio Santa Monica amid rumors that the 2018 game’s director, Cory Barlog, is busy creating a new IP. The veteran developer appears to have finally provided them with their first official details, albeit in the strangest way possible: his Facebook account.

“I’d like to share a little bit about our new project,” Barlog wrote on Facebook, as first reported by by Game Informer. “I’m incredibly proud of what the team at Santa Monica Studio has been accomplishing. It’s a technically ambitious project, something that’s not easy to achieve. This is a new IP we’ve been working on for years, and if all goes well, we’re planning to show it to you later this year. I couldn’t be more excited.”

While many have shared doubts about the veracity of the post, it’s been liked on the social media platform by people like God of War composer Bear McCreary and former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida. Sony did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

As rumors have swirled about what exactly Santa Monica is making, Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier reported earlier this year that, contrary to popular speculation, the studio was not making a sci-fi game. He was more cryptic on whether it’s related to God of War or not. “It’s not a new IP but it might feel like one,” he wrote. “Maybe that’s why people are confused.”

This led some fans to speculate if the upcoming game could be a God of War spin-off that is so different from the existing third-person action franchise it’s being treated internally as a new IP. It’s unclear right now how many projects Santa Monica has going at the same time, with rumored God of War set in Greece reportedly delayed and an online spin-off at fellow PlayStation studio Bluepoint reportedly canceled earlier this year.

One things for sure: the new game’s announcement, whatever it ends up being, is something PS5 super fans have been desperate for as this console generation drags on without many first-party single-player blockbusters to point to. If Barlog’s next game does get announced this year, presumably at the Game Awards, it’ll suggest the PS5 is shaping up to have a strong last few years when it comes to Sony-made exclusives.

Kai Cenat set to reveal his own Fortnite Icon Series skin

by admin August 18, 2025

Kai Cenat has just “leaked” that he’s getting his own Icon Series skin in Fortnite, announcing when fans can finally take a first look at it.

Nowadays, Fortnite isn’t merely known for being a Battle Royale title. Thanks to the expanding list of collabs, the title has truly evolved into a pop culture phenomenon.

In addition to featuring all kinds of fictional characters and real-life personalities, the game has also brought popular content creators and streamers to the island, such as Ninja, NickEh30, and Clix.

It turns out, the next one to join the Icon Series lineup is no other than Twitch streamer Kai Cenat, as seen in a recent announcement. Here’s everything you need to know about the reveal.

Kai Cenat “leaks” his own Fortnite Icon Series Skin

Kai Cenat shared the announcement in a post on X, claiming that there’s a “huge announcement” regarding a Fortnite Icon Series Reveal tomorrow at  8:30 PM PST/11:30 PM EST.

This, of course, came off as quite a surprise to the community, considering dataminers usually leak skins early. Though there are occasionally some exceptions that catch people off guard, like this one.

One thing that’s worth pointing out, however, shortly after the announcement, the official Fortnite account retweeted Kai’s post, confirming that he really is about to get his own skin.

Epic didn’t spoil any details further in their post, though they did give a playful nudge by saying “leaked.”

Either way, even though the skin has yet to be revealed, looking at past Icon Series skins, we can expect it to come with additional cosmetics, such as a pickaxe, back bling, and emote, among others.

This isn’t the first time Kai has worked with Epic. In 2024, Kai Cenat, Sketch, and the AMP team were featured in the Reload trailer.

Since then, Sketch has received his own emote, while Kai is about to get his own collab added. In terms of Fortnite, Kai has also done a marathon stream with iShowSpeed, in which they challenged themselves to keep streaming until they secured a Victory Royale.
