MindsEye developer reportedly prepping for layoffs after botched launch

by admin June 24, 2025

MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy has reportedly started the layoff process at the studio, after an underperforming launch.

The report, written by IGN, states the developer has informed staff the redundancy process has begun, with sources claiming over 100 employees could be impacted.

A source who wished to remain anonymous told IGN the 45-day consultation process had begun, which according to UK law kicks into effect when over 100 layoffs are planned within a 90-day window.

You can watch our video review of MindsEye here!Watch on YouTube

This news comes after a launch which disappointed many eager fans waiting to play the game that had, originally, been touted as a rival to Grand Theft Auto. The game, since its release, has been plagued with bugs, performance issues, crashes, and what many have called ‘dated design’. Right now MindsEye is rated Mostly Negative on Steam, though a hotfix has been released to improve the game for those still eager to give it a try. However, even after the patch, things are still far from perfect.

Prior to its release, the CEO of Build a Rocket Boy suggested negative reviews had been paid for, though the publisher of MindsEye IO Interactive did not share this belief when asked by IGN.

In Eurogamer’s review of MindsEye, writer Rick Lane wrote: “although it shows some early promise, MindsEye is sunk by a ridiculous story, inconsistent writing, poorly designed mission scenarios, and utterly atrocious combat.”

MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy reportedly laying off at least 100 employees

by admin June 24, 2025

MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy is preparing for a round of layoffs after the rough launch of its debut game, according to a new report from IGN. An anonymous source told the outlet there’s no definitive number yet as to how many people the studio is laying off, but it could be 100 or more.

UK labor law states that an employer that is proposing 20 or more redundancies at one “establishment” within 90 days must go through a process of collective redundancy consultation before the redundancies can go ahead. This means informing and consulting appropriate representatives of the affected employees to allow them to meet with the employer. This consultation must begin at least 30 days before the first dismissal (for cases of under 100 dismissals), or 45 days before (for more than 100 dismissals). According to the anonymous source, for Build a Rocket Boy’s case, a 45-day consultation period began on Monday, June 23. According to IGN’s report, Build a Rocket Boy has roughly 300 employees in the UK, so a third or more of its UK workforce may get laid off. The studio also employs about 200 people outside of the UK, and it’s unclear at this time if they’ll be affected as well.

MindsEye originally began as a game inside Build a Rocket Boy’s Roblox-like platform, Everywhere. That content platform isn’t out yet, and, with the studio’s impending layoffs, it’s unknown what the future holds for it.

MindsEye is out now for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

US House reportedly bans WhatsApp on government devices

by admin June 23, 2025

US congressional staffers have reportedly been told that they’re no longer allowed to use WhatsApp on government devices. The House of Representatives’ chief administrative officer (CAO) is said to have informed workers on Monday that the app — including the mobile, desktop and web-based versions — is not permitted on House-managed devices.

“The Office of Cybersecurity has deemed WhatsApp a high risk to users due to the lack of transparency in how it protects user data, absence of stored data encryption and potential security risks involved with its use,” the CAO wrote in an email, according to Axios. Microsoft Teams, Wickr, Signal (despite how easy it might be to accidentally invite a reporter to a sensitive group chat), iMessage and FaceTime were reportedly cited as acceptable alternatives, and the CAO reminded workers to be vigilant regarding potential phishing scams.

“We disagree with the House Chief Administrative Officer’s characterization in the strongest possible terms,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote on X. “We know members and their staffs regularly use WhatsApp and we look forward to ensuring members of the House can join their Senate counterparts in doing so officially. Messages on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted by default, meaning only the recipients and not even WhatsApp can see them. This is a higher level of security than most of the apps on the CAO’s approved list that do not offer that protection.”

The step follows limitations on congressional staffers’ use of other apps (including generative AI ones) that the CAO has deemed to be risky. Those include ChatGPT, TikTok, DeepSeek (which some states and federal departments have also banned from government devices) and Microsoft Copilot.

Ex-GTA Producer’s Studio Reportedly Gearing Up For Mass Layoff

by admin June 23, 2025

Image: Build A Rocket Boy

Things are going from bad to worse for Build A Rocket Boy. The studio founded by former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies is reportedly facing a mass layoff of over 100 employees after MindsEye launched to become the worst-rated game of 2025. Despite rushed hotfixes to address performance issues, some players have been getting refunds on PlayStation 5 as the sci-fi shooter sits at “mostly negative” on Steam.

A Hot-Fix Is On The Way For MindsEye’s Frustrating CPR Mini-Game

IGN reports that the redundancy process (read: layoffs) has been initiated at the company’s roughly 300-person UK office. The law there requires a 45-day consultation process before people are fired when 100 or more layoffs are proposed within a 90-day period. It’s not yet clear what the scale of the cuts will be. The company also reportedly has about 200 developers working abroad.

That’s a massive team size and is reflective of  Build A Rocket Boy’s ambition beyond MindsEye, which includes a scaleable gaming platform called Everywhere that would function like a metaverse unto itself. The recently shipped shooter about mental implants and memory loss in a near-future desert city inspired by Las Vegas was once meant to be just a side project showing off Everywhere, but seemingly became the short-term focus as that larger project stalled.

Just prior to launch, studio founder Benzies was talking about leveraging user-generated content tools to keep players engaged for the next 10 years. No review codes were made available to media or content creators, with some paid sponsors having their streams abruptly canceled after the game started becoming a punching bag on social media.

Published by Hitman maker IO Interactive, MindsEye billed itself as a Mafia-esque thriller in an open world with GTA-like driving. Despite some visually impressive cutscenes and intriguing story beats, however, many players panned the gunplay and NPC behavior. Performance issues on PC and poor framerates and plenty of bugs on console led Sony to make exceptions for some of its players and give refunds outside the normal window.

Unlike Cyberpunk 2077, which was pulled from PlayStation after release in 2020 over various issues, MindsEye remains available to buy and play on console and Steam, where only 38 percent of reviews from players rate the game positively. Players are currently waiting on a third major update expected before the end of June. Just prior to launch, Build A Rocket Boy’s CEO accused naysayers of being paid bots and both the chief legal and financial officers abruptly left the company.

Apple is reportedly considering the acquisition of Perplexity AI

Apple is reportedly considering the acquisition of Perplexity AI

by admin June 22, 2025

Apple’s executives are thinking of acquiring Perplexity AI both to get more talent and to be able to offer an AI-based search engine in the future, according to Bloomberg. Adrian Perica, Apple’s head of mergers and acquisitions, has reportedly already talked about the idea with services SVP Eddy Cue and the company’s top decision-makers with it comes to its AI efforts. It’s early stages, however: Apple has yet to talk to Perplexity about a bid, and the internal talks may not even lead to a formal offer.

The executives also reportedly discussed an alternative, wherein instead of buying Perplexity outright, it’ll team up with the AI company instead. Either way, the idea is to develop an AI search engine powered by Perplexity and to integrate Perplexity’s technology into Siri. While Apple has yet to make a formal offer, Bloomberg says it met several times with Perplexity over the past few months.

In May, Cue revealed that Apple discussed a possible Safari-integration with Perplexity while on the stand for Google’s ongoing Search antitrust case. Cue took the stand due to Apple’s long-standing deal with Google to make its search engine the default on the iPhone. (In turn, Apple gets billions of dollars a year — $18 billion in 2021 — from the arrangement.) Cue didn’t share any definitive plans, however, including the possibility of an acquisition.

If regulators order Apple to end its partnership with Google, purchasing Perplexity would make it easier for the company to develop an AI-based search engine. In addition, it would allow the company to acquire talent needed to be able to catch up with other companies when it comes to artificial intelligence. Apple, like Meta, has been scouting for new AI talent. Bloomberg says it’s even competing against the Facebook owner to hire Daniel Gross, the founder of AI company Safe Superintelligence Inc. The company does seem to need help to be able to release the AI features it wants to provide its users. A few months ago, for instance, Apple delayed the rollout of a more powerful Siri that was a key component of its original pitch for Apple Intelligence.

Metroid Prime 4 advert reportedly spotted in London, sparking hopes of imminent release

Metroid Prime 4 advert reportedly spotted in London, sparking hopes of imminent release

by admin June 20, 2025

An advert for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has reportedly been photographed on the London Underground, stating the game is “out now”.

Officially, the game is only due for release at some point this year, so the discovery of this advert has sparked hope a release is imminent.

The images, reportedly taken at Oxford Circus, have not been verified. Eurogamer has contacted Nintendo for confirmation of Metroid Prime 4’s release date.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Direct 3.27.2025Watch on YouTube

Still, the reddit post does include multiple images from different angles, so it certainly appears real. So what’s going on?

At the very least, Metroid Prime 4 is certainly not “out now”. It’s not available to purchase on the eShop, and it seems unlikely Nintendo would shadow drop it.

Instead, this is likely a mistake: either the advertising company has mistakenly put the advert up too early, or a “coming soon” sign of some sort is meant to cover the “out now” part for removal later. Either way, we’re awaiting official clarification from Nintendo.

As the advert is specifically for the Switch 2 Edition, it includes: support for mouse controls, up to 4K resolution in docked TV mode, frame rates up to 120fps, and HDR support.

The game is also set for release on the original Switch, presumably at the same time.

After years of waiting, the hugely anticipated sci-fi adventure received a first gameplay trailer in June last year. A deeper look at the game was provided during the March Nintendo Direct, where Samus’ psychic powers were revealed.

I was able to play Metroid Prime 4 at the Nintendo Switch 2 preview event in London and tested out its variety of control options. Mouse controls certainly work well enough, but I’m not convinced it’ll be the most comfortable way to play on your sofa.

Switch 2 third-party sales reportedly mostly "very low" despite record-breaking console launch

Switch 2 third-party sales reportedly mostly “very low” despite record-breaking console launch

by admin June 19, 2025

Switch 2 has got off to a flying start, with Nintendo proudly trumpeting the console as its “fastest-selling hardware ever” just days after launch. But while things are looking rosy for Nintendo, a new report suggests third-party titles have so far struggled, with one third-party publisher saying sales have been “below our lowest estimates”.

That’s according to TheGameBusiness’ Chris Dring, who collated some pertinent sales figures surrounding Switch 2’s launch in his latest newsletter. The key numbers are that 48 percent of physical game sales in the UK (and 62 percent of physical game sales in the US) were first-party titles, if Switch 2’s Mario Kart World bundle is excluded; but if it’s not, 86 percent of Switch 2 physical game sales in the UK were for first-party titles. Nintendo, for context, had three titles available physically at launch: Mario Kart World, plus Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom; third-parties released a total of 13 physical games.

Dring notes Switch 2’s figures are an improvement compared to the original Switch’s launch, where 89 percent of UK physical sales were from first-party games, but adds that “most third-party Switch 2 games posted very low numbers”, despite the availability of some big names, including Civilization 7, Split Fiction, Street Fighter, and Hogwarts Legacy (the report’s source, NielsenIQ, does not publicly release video game sales data).

Cyberpunk 2077 did “reasonable numbers” on Switch 2.Watch on YouTube

Speaking to TheGameBusiness, one unnamed third-party publisher painted a bleak picture of its Switch 2 launch sales, saying they’d been “below our lowest estimates”. However, not every third-party release has struggled. Dring says CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 was the “best-selling third-party game during the launch of Switch 2”, and did “reasonable numbers”.

Dring highlights the fact CD Projekt was one of the few publishers not to opt for Nintendo’s controversial Game Key Cards, which require full downloads to play, and quotes CD Projekt’s Jan Rosner as having previously said, “Do not underestimate the physical edition. It’s not going anywhere and Nintendo players are very appreciative of physical editions that are done right.”

As to why most third-parties have got off to a slow start on Switch 2, Dring suggests a number of reasons in his analysis; there’s the console’s enhanced backward compatibility, for starters, meaning many players (we’ve got some of them here) are likely also delving into the original Switch’s impressive back catalogue right now. That’s alongside a lack of reviews covering third-party games given Nintendo’s decision not to provide early consoles to press, and it’s hard to ignore the fact almost all third-party Switch 2 titles are ports of older games, which many core players have likely already experienced elsewhere.

Despite all this, Dring says many major publishers have told him Nintendo is “actively trying to push third-party games this time around”, so the hope will obviously be that sales pick up once players have had their fill of Mario Kart World. Notable confirmed third-party titles still to release include EA Sports Madden 26 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, while Nintendo’s big hitters include Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, plus Switch 2 editions of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Tesla's robotaxi debut will reportedly be limited to only 10 cars in very specific areas

Tesla’s robotaxi debut will reportedly be limited to only 10 cars in very specific areas

by admin June 19, 2025

The long-promised launch of Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin is scheduled for June 22, and it sounds like the company’s initial offering will be modest at best. The Financial Times writes that Tesla will only have around 10 cars available for rides and that the company plans to make them “avoid the city’s most challenging intersections.” If issues arise, remote operators will also reportedly be able to take control of the cars to make sure they reach their final destination.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told CNBC in May that the robotaxi service might launch with less than a dozen cars, so that’s not necessarily a surprise, but the actual scope may be even smaller. Analysts The New York Times spoke to believe rides in Tesla’s robotaxi will only be available to “company employees or invited guests.” It could take months before the service is made available to the wider public.

Musk formally introduced the company’s robotaxi service and its self-driving Cybercab at an event in October 2024, but the idea has been a promised feature for Tesla owners for even longer. The pitch goes that since all Teslas are equipped with the cameras necessary for the company’s self-driving system, any of them can be converted into a cab while not in use. Musk believes autonomous transport could be so widespread that it becomes as cheap as mass transit, while being safer than relying on a human driver.

Whether the company’s Full Self Driving system can pull that off is an open question. Tesla is currently being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for autonomous driving-related crashes. The company has also reportedly blocked the city of Austin from handing over its robotaxi records, which suggests it’s at least somewhat self-conscious about how it will perform.

Stellar Blade for Switch 2 reportedly in development

by admin June 18, 2025

A Switch 2 version of PS5 console exclusive Stellar Blade is reportedly in development.

Korean site PlayForum has reported developer Shift Up has received a dev kit for Nintendo’s new console and has begun initial development work.

The news follows the release last week of Stellar Blade on PC, which has already proven a huge success for the studio – it managed record numbers for a PlayStation-published single player game and sold over a million copies within three days of its release.

Stellar Blade – PC Features Trailer | PC GamesWatch on YouTube

According to PlayForum (via machine translation), Shift Up is working on platform-specific optimisation to reflect the Switch 2’s lower power compared to Sony’s console (and PC).

Indeed, Stellar Blade was one of the first games optimised for Sony’s more powerful PS5 Pro console and has been praised for its performance.

PlayForum also stated the Switch 2 version plays into Shift Up’s multiplatform strategy, expanding beyond a single-platform hit.

Beyond Stellar Blade, the studio has its Goddess of Victory: Nikke game, plus its newly announced flagship Project Spirits.

A sequel to Stellar Blade is also in development and has been set to a 2027 release in a recent investor presentation from the studio.

Director Hyung-tae Kim stated Stellar Blade 2 will address the lack of narrative in the original game, which had its total number of cutscenes cut due to cost-saving measures. This included details on why main character Eve changes clothes so much.

“In the early stages of development, we planned to include detailed settings such as the reason the main character changes clothes in the story. However, as production progressed, the cost of producing cutscenes became too much,” he said. “And eventually, for the sake of efficiency, we had no choice but to reduce cutscenes that supplemented the world view or character narratives outside of the main plot. That’s how we were barely able to complete the game.”

Nexon reportedly considering acquisition bid from Tencent

Nexon reportedly considering acquisition bid from Tencent

by admin June 18, 2025

Tencent is reportedly considering a deal to acquire Nexon.

The Chinese megacorp – which recently struck up a deal with Ubisoft by developing a new operating model and subsidiary following a $1.25bn cash “injection” – shows no sign of slowing its acquisition business, with claims it “reached out to the family of Nexon’s late founder Kim Jung-ju to discuss the possibility of an acquisition.” Nexon’s market value is thought to be around $15 billion.

Bloomberg reports Kim’s family is considering the deal and has been “speaking to advisers and evaluating options,” according to sources close to the family. It’s thought Tencent is looking for “evergreen” franchises with established communities and strong revenue potential.

Neither Tencent nor Nexon has opted to comment publicly on the plans thus far.

As well as its recent deal with Ubisoft, Tencent has also recently increased its stake in FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa, Kuro Games, Wangyuan Shengtang, the Beijing-based developer behind action-RPG series Swords of Legends (or ‘Gujian’ as it is known in China), and loaned €15 million to Alan Wake 2 developer, Remedy.

Last week, Tencent won after a court found leaker Xiaopang Commentary had infringed the IP rights of Peacekeeper Elite, the Chinese version of PUBG Mobile.
