Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s progression-helping boosts aren’t exclusive to Switch 2 and Xbox, will also arrive via patch for PS5 and PC

by admin September 27, 2025

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to release on Switch 2 and Xbox next January and will come with boost features familiar to players of the Pixel Remasters, known as Streamlined Progression.

Square Enix has confirmed to Eurogamer these boosts will also be coming to the PS5 and PC versions of the game in a future update, though there’s no date yet. The PC version’s enhanced lighting features will be coming to PS5 too.

As outlined previously in a Square Enix blog, players will have access to a new menu where they can implement a number of boosts such as HP full, MP full, Limit gauge full, and maximum damage dealt, which can be toggled individually.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE – Release Date Announcement – Nintendo Switch 2Watch on YouTube

“I feel that the way people enjoy content has become more flexible these days, as we see with video streaming platforms, and that people also want the same thing from games, with options to tailor the experience based on the time they have and their levels of interest,” said director Naoki Hamaguchi. “I have also had personal experiences where I wanted to play something with the limited time I have but gave up because of the time it takes to level up characters or traverse the game.

“That’s exactly why I think that the Streamlined Progression feature is very effective – to give players smooth access to the story.”

Meanwhile, Hamaguchi stated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is “doing very well” on PS5 and PC in an interview with Automaton, so there’s no need to worry about part three.

For its remake of Final Fantasy 7, Square Enix decided to create a trilogy. But as sales appear to have decreased with each installment, some fans have been worried about the quality of the third game, presuming the company may be keen to move on.

“I know some fans have expressed concerns, but please rest assured, we’ll be able to deliver a proper, high-quality third installment,” said Hamaguchi.

He additionally provided a status update on the project.

“Development is going extremely well, and the game is shaping up nicely,” he said. “A lot of the content is already playable, and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now, the team is united around refining everything.”

For now, the game remains without a release date, but as Remake is heading to Switch 2 and Xbox in January, and Square Enix has confirmed the whole trilogy will be coming to both platforms too, the final part presumably won’t be released until after then. Perhaps it’ll even be a simultaneous multiplatform release.

Indeed, the multiplatform release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project will certainly boost sales, helping to counter any decline in sales.

Speaking to Windows Central, Hamaguchi declared himself an Xbox fan. “I’m going to do my best to make sure that Square Enix can continue to reach a wider audience, including Xbox,” he said. “So thank you from me as well.”

He also discussed optimising the game for the Xbox Series S, which is notoriously tricky due to its lower specs.

“In terms of hardware specs, I would say the Xbox Series S is actually quite solid in terms of spec,” said Hamaguchi. “We didn’t come across much of a processing challenge, but many of the challenges were more memory related.

“Optimisation is something we were strongly cognizant of as we worked on the PC version as well. For Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we took some of the philosophies found in Nanite for Unreal Engine 5 and created our own solution for Unreal Engine 4. We were successful in delivering stable graphics there, and gain Steam Deck verification as well. We have been pretty proud of what we were able to achieve, even on lower spec systems.”

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has hinted that game may also be headed to Switch 2.

FF7 Remake’s Third Chapter Is ‘Going Extremely Well’

by admin September 27, 2025

Square Enix arguably broke the internet about 10 years ago when it finally revealed it was working on a long-anticipated remake of Final Fantasy 7. Now, in 2025, two parts of this trilogy project have arrived on PlayStation and PC, with ports expected on Switch 2 and Xbox in the near future.

Speaking with a number of outlets, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s director Naoki Hamaguchi shed some light on FF7 Remake’s upcoming arrival on Switch 2 and Xbox, what it took to get the game running on less powerful hardware, how Rebirth is shaping up on Switch 2, and which Final Fantasy he’d be eager to see remade next.

The key to the Switch 2’s FF7R port was nailing the lighting

Speaking to ScreenRant, Hamaguchi zeroed in on “character expressions” and “lighting” as being essential to delivering a quality experience on Nintendo’s hybrid console:

Our aim was to align more towards the lightning we see in the PS5 version, and then we also kind of balance this by aligning more towards the sort of switch to post-effect and fog. And in this way the user is not really able to make out a huge difference

In an interview with Inverse, Hamaguchi said that a Switch 2 port seemed likely early on once “Nintendo first shared with [Square Enix] the new hardware […] the thought came to me that Final Fantasy 7 can likely run on these specs.”

According to Hamaguchi, the Xbox version was already in the works before the team got their first look at the Switch 2 hardware. And, contrary to what you may think, the underpowered Series S wasn’t much of an issue. Though the team has run into some memory problems on Series S, Hamaguchi still describes Microsoft’s budget console as “quite high in terms of specs.”

FF7 Remake isn’t the only part of the remake project headed to Switch 2. The more graphically ambitious Rebirth is also expected to arrive at some point in the future. Hamaguchi described Rebirth as being in a “working state” on Switch 2. “Our desire was to be able to ultimately offer and serve all of the platforms available,” Hamaguchi told ScreenRant. He declined to say, however, whether or not the third installment will arrive as a multiplatform title on day one.

Development on part three of FF7 remake’s trilogy is ‘going extremely well’

The FF7 remake project is still ongoing, with a yet-unnamed third entry on the horizon. Hamaguchi describes development as “going extremely well.” “A lot of the content is already playable,” he told Automaton, “and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now the team is united around refining everything.”

FF7’s remakes have certainly impressed a number of fans, but concerns over the sales of the last entry and the general direction of the various plot changes do remain. For his part, Hamaguchi has described Rebirth as “doing very well on both PS5 and PC” in terms of sales. He also shared with ScreenRant how the recent live-action Beauty and the Beast remake inspired his decisions in reinterpreting FF7 for the remake trilogy:

When development [on FF7 Remake] was happening, the Beauty and the Beast movie remake was released. That movie, the original, was one I watched as a child. And then they now had the live-action that’s a remake…I saw the overall story and the world itself was not altered, but it was completely deconstructed in a way to really entertain today’s viewers, which was deeply satisfying.

Although FF7’s remake chapters have occupied his time, Hamaguchi has spent some time daydreaming about other possible remakes in the classic JRPG series. Speaking to Windows Central, the director described FF6 as his favorite, saying “That would be very cool to take on as a remake. I’ve put my heart and soul into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series for over a decade now. Working on something completely new would be quite fun as well.”

Here’s Why The Era Of Video Game Remakes Is Just Getting Started

by admin September 19, 2025

I bet if you’re reading this post right now, you’ve played a remake or a remaster of an old video game at some point in the last 12 months. According to a new survey of 1,500 other players, you’re not alone. A whopping 90 percent of respondents said they’d also played a modern revival of a classic game at some point in the last year. And how could you not? More and more keep coming out all of the time.

The new data point comes from strategy and insights consultancy firm MTM, which this week published its “Remake vs Innovate: Is the past the future of gaming?” report (via Gamesindustry.biz). It interviewed 750 players in the U.S. and 750 in the UK and found the overwhelming majority not only played remakes and remasters, but also often hadn’t played the games they were based on. About 67 percent said it was their preferred way to discover older games, and 85 percent said they’d never played the originals before.

Some other results from the survey:

  • Only 26 percent of players thought remakes or remasters could be priced the same as other games or the original versions, with the rest expecting them to be cheaper.
  • About 60 percent thought 5-8 years is the ideal amount of time between versions. Only 11 percent thought 10 years or more was preferable.
  • Only 31 percent found remasters or remakes “very appealing.”

Trying to layer logic onto the gamer psyche is often a fool’s errand, but the takeaway from this one report at least appears to be that most people are actually okay with updating old games as long as they are 1) not too old and 2) sold for less. Apparently, the Last of Us Part II remaster that most of us mocked is actually exactly what some not insignificant cohort of players really want.

Why we’re about to get more remakes and remasters than ever

While MTM’s report suggests that many players aren’t outraged at the idea of getting spoon-fed old games like they’re new again, the sales success of releases like the Silent Hill 2 remake, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta: Snake Eater speak for themselves. And it’s easy to see why companies would want to glom onto this opening in the market.

Remakes and remasters can be outsourced (Virtuos handled both Oblivion and Snake Eater), they help plug holes in ever-elongating release schedules (Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are still nowhere in sight), and they offer newer studio teams a chance to familiarize themselves with a game’s design and development pipeline before jumping onto a new entry from scratch. Pulling the best-selling blockbusters of the past into the present is also one way to avoid the risks of taking a chance on a sequel or new IP.

The results aren’t always cynical, either. Nightdive’s 2023 System Shock remake was a faithful restoration of and update to an immersive sim classic that also made it playable for the first time on consoles. Few had a chance of rediscovering Persona 3 on PS2 or PSP, but last year’s remake showed a whole new generation of players why some fans love it even more than Persona 4 and 5. Remakes and remasters have given no shortage of classic RPGs that might otherwise feel borderline-archaic by today’s standards a second chance thanks to quality-of-life features that let you turn off random encounters or speed up combat.

There are already way too many new games to keep up with. Giving me more reasons to check out an old one feels increasingly like a good thing.

MGS3 Remake’s Collector’s Edition Looks Cheap And Bad

by admin August 29, 2025

I’ve purchased few collector’s editions in my time. I never know where I’m gonna put the damn things, I often end up selling the stuff later on, and, well, sometimes you hear and see horror stories that dissuade you from shelling out two or three times the cost of a game to just get some ugly plastic junk. Sadly, it seems that the excellent Metal Gear Solid Delta has that very problem, with its special edition containing a diorama that sounds neat in practice, but is actually pretty ugly and disappointing according to fans.

Read More: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater: The Kotaku Review

Advertised as a pretty neat-looking diorama of a memorable scene from early in Snake Eater when Snake has to recover his backpack from a hanging tree branch, fans on r/metalgearsolid are sharing their disappointment with the actual product. The foliage not only doesn’t match what was advertised, but in some cases it looks like it was just tossed in there, with some stuff laying on its side. Oh, and the model of Snake? Yeesh. I’ll also add that Snake is supposed to call Major Zero on the radio after he gets the backpack, so like omg this scene just totally disrespects the lore.

If you managed to get your hands on the Japanese or European versions of Delta’s collector’s edition, however, you likely have a much prettier piece of shelf decoration. In Japan it retails for 38,500 yen or around 260 bucks, a bit more than it did here, but the bust of Snake it comes with isn’t just satisfyingly detailed, with the pale viper wrapped around him as matches the advertisements; it also features a lovely reference to one of the game’s ending scenes in the white and red flowers blooming around its base.

So if you’re an MGS sicko like myself, and you do have shelf space to spare, definitely figure out how you can get your hands on the overseas version of this collector’s edition.

More Metal Gear Remakes Could Be Coming If Delta Is A Success

by admin August 24, 2025

Later this month, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will bring a modern upgrade to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, a game over two decades old. And if the new remaster does well, it may not be the last time Konami revisits an older Metal Gear Solid game.

When asked about other potential MGS remakes, Delta producer Yuji Korekado told Game Informer, “At the moment, we are focused on delivering Delta in the best possible way to the current generation, and once this game is released, if the fans feel they would like to see more from playing the game, then we would like to consider lots of other games in the future. For now, this is it.”

Now Playing: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Review

“We are always thinking about what we could do for the Metal Gear series,” added producer Noriaki Okamura. “But in regards to remaking future titles, currently we’re just focusing on the now, and we thought what would be the best way to reach both the old fans and potential new fans as well.”

The most in-demand candidate for a remake may be Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which has been locked in on PS3 for 17 years. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 brought the original trilogy to consoles in 2023.

In a separate interview, Okamura and Korekado said they plan to hand the franchise over to a new generation of creators if Konami decides to make a new Metal Gear Solid games. The creator of the franchise, Hideo Kojima, recently indicated that he won’t play the new MGS Delta. Okamura has shared his admiration for Kojima and vocalized his desire to work with him on the MGS franchise in the future.

Ahead of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s August 28 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Konami revealed that Platinum Games worked on a new version of Snake’s Nightmare, a secret mode from the original game. Meanwhile, original Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter shared his thoughts about Metal Gear Solid 5, which was the only primary game in the series he didn’t lend his voice to.
