There’s one more bit of PC-relevant news to come out of Nintendo’s latest blunderbuss of Mario guff, following the Hades 2 release date and Danganronpa 2×2 announcement. It’s that Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is getting a remake, and it’ll be available on PC next year.

“This title has undergone a complete overhaul,” the Steam page says, “with improvements to everything from visuals and audio to the core gameplay systems and controls. The signature Camera Obscura mechanic, used to capture and fend off spirits, remains a key feature, now offering richer and more engaging gameplay in both exploration and combat. In addition, the new ‘Holding Hands with Mayu’ mechanic adds a heartfelt touch, letting you experience the deep bond between the sisters like never before.”

While two later games in the series, Maiden of Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, have made it to PC previously, this is the first time one of the well-received original trilogy will be officially represented on our platform of choice. It’s reportedly the scariest one in the whole series too.

Fatal Frame, known as Project Zero in some territories, is about ghosts who can be hurt by taking photos of them. Keeping them in focus while they’re trying to murder you, and taking shots at the precise moment they attack—the “fatal frame” of the title—provides the challenge. As does the fact you have to stare at creeps and spectres in first-person through your viewfinder the whole time.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is another 2026 release, though the trailer does end on “early 2026” so maybe we won’t have too long to wait.

Every year at Creation Mod Con, a showcase for the Skyrim modding community, the Skyblivion team gets to show off their remake of Oblivion in the Skyrim engine. This year it’s a real treat: the tutorial dungeon that takes you from an insulting dark elf, through your meeting with Emperor Sir Patrick Stewart, battles with the cultists of the Mythic Dawn, into the sewers, and then out into the bright light of day.

Skyblivion’s philosophy is that of a remake rather than a remaster, so unlike Oblivion Remastered it’ll have redesigned dungeons that, as with Skyrim’s underground death mazes, climax with a shortcut leading out to freedom or back to the beginning. The tutorial dungeon doesn’t need one, of course, and has been deliberately left fairly vanilla so as not to shock your delicate sensibilities too much. But it’ll be interesting to see how much has changed in Cyrodiil beyond the sewer.

“For many fans, stepping out of the tutorial dungeon and into the open world is the defining Elder Scrolls moment,” says Skyblivion project lead Kyle (AKA Rebelzize). “To see that recreated in Skyblivion, with all the artistry and passion our team as poured in, from the emperor’s face, new custom menus, the dungeon design itself and the quest systems needed to get it to function, is a surreal reminder of how far the project has came over the past 10 years. It represents a culmination of years of dedication marking the start of the players’ journey and offers a glimpse of the world we have all built together. There are many different departments and individuals who have contributed to bring this opening segment to life and it’s truly a celebration of all of their talents and contributions to the project.”

Plenty of things have changed, like the lockpicking—a new system inspired in part by the lockpicking in The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as Oblivion’s original hateful minigame—and there’s a definite Skyrim-ness to the animations. The Emperor even does that thing where he goes to fold his arms then immediately changes his mind, a familiar Skyrim motion. One tiny thing that’s the same as it was in Oblivion is that the final rat in the sewer is friendly and can be walked past without combat, which was a nice touch to spot.

If you’d like to see more, you can hop into the livestream at the point the tutorial dungeon finished and see a little extra footage, including the first area of an Ayleid ruin, some open world roaming, and the settlements of Cheydinhaal and Anvil, which looks lovely at night.

Work on Skyblivion continues apace, but if you’d like to help it across the finish line the team is still looking for volunteers.

KPop Demon Hunters Gets Perfectly Remade As A Lego Movie

Remember that scene in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse that showed a Lego version of Peter Parker living his best blocky life? If you didn’t know, that segment was animated entirely by then 14-year-old animator Preston Mutanga, who caught the filmmaker’s attention after he recreated the movie’s first trailer in the style of a Lego movie. It’s been two years, and the now 16-year-old Mutanga is still hard at work building scenes and trailers from Lego blocks. His recent projects include making the Grand Theft Auto 6 and Stranger Things trailers look like something right out of a kid’s toy box, but it’s his latest incredible videos that have really caught my eye: faithful remakes of scenes from KPop Demon Hunters, done in such spectacular fashion that they could have been an official collaboration between Sony, Netflix, and Lego.

Mutanga has uploaded two videos featuring the Lego versions of Huntr/x to his TikTok account. One is a snippet of one of the coolest parts of the movie’s first musical number, “How It’s Done,” which shows the group skydiving down onto a blocky version of Seoul and kicking some demon booty on the way down. 

The second is less action-packed but longer, and lets Mutanga add a cute nod to his Spider-Man roots. It’s a scene, maybe a third of the way into the movie, after the demonic Saja Boys boy band has started getting their flirty, sexy demon claws into the hearts and minds of the world. They’ve weakened the Honmoon barrier between the real and demon worlds, and the girls are trying to figure out what to do while maintaining their Kpop girl group cover. Their manager, Bobby, comes in to give them an update on their rivals’ newfound virality, and as he scrolls through videos of the Boys’ fans dancing to their hit song “Soda Pop,” a familiar webslinger briefly appears on his phone.

Mutanga’s incredible work speaks for itself, but I will say I sure hope someone over at Lego or Sony is ready to give this kid a job when he’s of age.

A single developer has remade Call of Duty 2’s Carentan level with photo-scanned models, ray tracing and more

As well as boosting its GeForce Now cloud streaming with PS5 Pro-beating hardware and new peripheral options, Nvidia has also detailed some of its recent RTX Remix successes at Gamescom 2025. If you’re not familiar, RTX Remix is a set of tools for remastering old games with modern graphics techniques, converting ancient engines to support ray-traced lighting, shadow and reflections, new particular effects, higher-quality materials and so on. Specifically, the firm is announcing the winners of its RTX Remix contest, and showing off exactly what makes each fan-made graphics mod worthy of recognition. I took a look at some of the winning entries at Nvidia’s booth here in Cologne, and was particularly impressed by the RTX Remix of a seminal classic, Call of Duty 2.

The project is the work of a single developer, tadpole3159, who has been painstakingly photo-scanning real-world WW2 weaponry in order to produce a version of the game that holds up against modern competitors. Like other RTX Remix projects, the aim is to use physically-correct materials, tagging different assets in the game with what they’re made of so that they have realistic roughness, reflectivity and so on. With that in place, objects in the world can react realistically to changing lighting conditions, cast appropriate shadows and produce rough or clear reflections as appropriate.

Descriptions of the mod state that tadpole3159 is a lead artist at a UK game studio, which perhaps explains how a single person has been able to create assets (at least for the Carentan level of the game) unassisted. The demo that I saw included hotkeys for changing the time of day, allowing you to see how the game world can change drastically from bright sunlight, to the dead of night, to varying levels of overhead cloud. (The developer is British, the Nvidia reps explained, so they found it easier to produce lots of convincingly realistic grey skies.) As well as the material upgrades, rooms are being upgraded with period-appropriate contents, walls get new details and foliage is expanded to lush excess. It dramatically changes the look of the game, and is an impressive effort for a project made in around two months.

The other RTX Remix projects highlighted by Nvidia are also worth perusing, as they’re all free downloads from the mod.db site. The ones I saw were Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, which uses more of a “use AI to upscale everything, then hand-make the really important stuff” approach, which manages to convincingly recreate the atmospheric feel of the game while ensuring the entire thing looks at least OK. Painkiller, by contrast, went for a more selective approach, with the developer creating full 3D replacements for what were previously flat textures or static objects, allowing for swinging torches that splash light around the room as they are shot into motion, and intricate ceiling supports that cast complex shadows to produce real depth. That approach requires a lot of research and insight into the original intents of the developers, but produces sterling results.

Nvidia is also continuing to upgrade the capabilities of the RTX Remix suite, with a particle editor that arrives next month. The demo I saw was quite straightforward, showing a half-finished fire effect that was tweaked and tuned by adjusting sliders for particle size, number and gravity. The Nvidia rep explained that most games in the DX8 and DX9 era lacked proper particle editors, so modders normally have to create their own or work around the limitations, but the new tool should make creating particle effects like smoke, sparks, steam or fire much quicker.

Nvidia also announced that its newish Nvidia app would soon include an overlay for showing what DLSS and other overrides are active – making it much easier to go “did that actually work?” when upgrading to a newer preset – and RTX Hair is coming soon to Indiana Jones: The Great Circle, bringing fancier and more efficiently rendered follicles.
