Hollow Knight: Silksong launch breaks global game storefronts

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s surprise release date was “a little callous,” says Hell is Us lead

by admin September 15, 2025

Hell is Us’ creative director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, has described Team Cherry’s surprise reveal of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date just two weeks before its launch as “a little callous.”

As reported by This Week in Videogames, Jacques-Belletête appeared in the most recent episode of Skill Up’s Friends Per Second podcast, where he discussed his and Rogue Factor’s experience releasing soulslike Hell is Us on the same day that Hollow Knight: Silksong was released, having had only two weeks’ notice that both games would release on September 4, 2025.

“We all jumped on our phones really quickly, with our publisher [Nacon] and all sorts of things like that,” Jacques-Belletête said, describing the moment the studio discovered Team Cherry had unexpectedly announced Hollow Knight: Silksong’s long-awaited release date in a trailer posted on August 21, 2025.

“I mean, they’re allowed to do what they did; there’s no laws or rules against that,” he continued. “And I don’t want to say: ‘they caused this to us or somebody else’. I don’t really care about that. I don’t want to get into that type of debate.

“But when you know you’re that big, a shadow drop is a bit like ‘wow.’

“As the GTA 6 of indie – and I know now this term gets thrown left and right, but in the industry that’s already how we were calling such a game – to shadow drop something like this is a little callous.”

Hell is Us was first announced in April 2022, with a release window slated for the following year. In October 2023, Rogue Factor announced the game was delayed until 2025, with its final September 2025 release date revealed during Sony’s State of Play livestream in February 2025.

After learning about Team Cherry’s plans to release Hollow Knight: Silksong on the same day, Rogue Factor “decided to keep the date,” said Jacques-Belletête. “And I’m happy that we did.”

“We’re still much bigger than some of the smaller [studios] who would have [been] a lot more affected and decided to change their dates,” he continued. “Changing the date of Hell is Us would have been a pretty big endeavour.”

When asked whether changing Hell is Us’ release date would have been feasible, Jacques-Belletête explained that “the real pain in the ass” of doing so was that the studio would have had to reimburse and refund player pre-orders.

He did clarify, however, that the decision to keep the date was not “just” because of this.

“We were also like ‘no, I think we can get through the storm’. But it was a thing.”

“That day, a lot of emails, texts, and messages went back and forth between a lot of people, between us and our publisher,” he continued. “It was a real thing.”

Hollow Knight: Silksong surpassed half a million concurrent players following its launch, while Hell is Us’ all-time peak concurrent player count stands at 4,431 (according to SteamDB).

When asked whether he believes Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release impacted Hell is Us’ performance, Jacques-Belletête said: “I can’t prove it, I don’t have any specific numbers, at least not at this time. But, I mean, for sure. For sure it did.”

Jacques-Belletête did emphasise, however, that “it’s not just Silksong” that had an impact on Hell is Us’ release, pointing to Bloober Team’s Cronos: The New Dawn, released on September 5, 2025, as an example of another title released during the same period. “It was busy.”

“That’s the thing nowadays, getting a window where you’re pretty much alone is almost impossible,” Jacques-Belletête continued.

“15 years ago, kind of the mid to end of the summer was always a dead period. But there’s no such thing anymore. It’s constant madness.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Remake: Release Date and Time on Peacock

by admin September 15, 2025

Need a live-action Night Fury in your life? The recent How to Train Your Dragon remake is hitting Peacock, so animated film fans can spend more time with the franchise’s Vikings and dragons.

The new version from Universal Pictures stars Mason Thames as the misfit Viking teen Hiccup, and Gerard Butler as Hiccup’s dragon-loathing dad, Stoick the Vast (Butler also voices the character in the animated movie). Nico Parker plays Astrid, the tough girl Hiccup has a crush on, and Nick Frost plays the village of Berk’s blacksmith, Gobber. The live-action film has a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who co-directed and co-wrote the 2010 original.

Don’t miss any of our unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add CNET as a preferred Google source.

If you want to stream a movie with adventure, underdogs and deceptively fearsome dragons, here’s when the How to Train Your Dragon remake premieres on Peacock.

When to watch the How to Train Your Dragon remake on Peacock

US viewers can start watching the live-action flick as early as 6 a.m. ET (3 a.m. PT) on Friday, Oct. 10.

Peacock will also offer the three animated movies — How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) — starting Oct. 1. The streaming service now offers three tiers: $11 per month Premium, $17 per month Premium Plus and $8 per month Select, which doesn’t carry some Peacock offerings like originals and Universal Pictures movies. You’ll need Premium, which is ad-based, or Premium Plus, which is mostly ad-free, to stream the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake.

James Martin/CNET

Peacock is among the streaming services that have raised prices in 2025. If you plan to use Peacock for a while and want to save some money, you could consider prepaying for a year for less than the cost of 12 separate months. Students may be eligible for discounted Peacock Premium, and Walmart Plus customers will soon be able to select the ad-supported plan as a streaming perk.

Dying Light: The Beast gets a release date bump so short you’ll wonder why they bothered

by admin September 14, 2025

Whenever there is word of a video game’s release date being changed, it’s hardly ever surprising because nine times out of ten, it’s because it has been delayed. That’s just the way things are these days, no one can have the luxury of Team Cherry, who took so long making Silksong just because they were having fun. However, in this case, the release date shifting news is actually a positive one, as Dying Light: The Beast will be launching just that little bit earlier.

By little bit, I truly do mean only a tiny amount. The game was originally slated for release on September 19th, and now it’s coming out… September 18th! I do genuinely wonder how such a miniscule change will make any difference to Techland’s bottom line, but I’m no accountant, or, I don’t know, money line go up predictor, whatever that particular job might be called.

In a press release, Dying Light franchise director Tymon Smektała said that because they know the game is ready, they wanted to “do something special for our players,” so they pushed themselves to “make the impossible possible,” which translates to one day less that everyone has to wait for it. Feels like a slightly hyperbolic way to present such a tiny release date bump, but I suppose it is always nice to see this as opposed to yet another delay.

Also, as another form of thanks to those who have or will pre-order the game, some kind of “exclusive new reward” will be in store for them. Can’t tell you what that is, not because it’s a secret, but because proper details will be coming during launch week, i.e. next week.

Our own Edwin got to have a little jaunt through the upcoming open world game earlier this year which he described as “on the whole, quite jolly.”

Balatro Creator Pushes Back 1.1 Release Indefinitely

by admin September 14, 2025

The overwhelming success of Balatro was one of the biggest stories of 2024 and a life-changing event for solo dev LocalThunk. However, LocalThunk is still only one man and he’s revealed that his previously promised Balatro 1.1 update will not be arriving this year.

LocalThunk explained the reasons for the delay in a lengthy message on his official site, but it ultimately boils down to the name of his post: “I’m Slow.” He apologized to players for the delay before expressing his desire to avoid repeating the crunch mode of 12-hour days he put in when Balatro was approaching launch and stated that he prefers to treat the work as a hobby rather than a job.

“I still love drawing my silly jokers,” wrote LocalThunk. “I carry around a notebook that is now teeming with ideas to implement or test in the game, and thankfully I still consider this my hobby, but the prospect of rushing the work and going back into crunch mode to get it out this year just felt terrible. I am working slowly, but I like it that way. I love getting sucked into rabbit holes and I don’t like trying to force things creatively.”

LocalThunk noted that he only recently reached 100% of the achievements in his own game, which made him excited about the prospect of doing it again after the 1.1 update is complete. He also assured fans that it will happen, but the 1.1 update won’t be released until it’s ready.

Balatro was one of GameSpot’s best games of 2024, and it also lined up awards at the 2025 DICE Awards, New York Game Awards 2025, and The Game Awards 2024 before winning Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Dying Light: The Beast’s release date has been moved forward by one whole day

by admin September 14, 2025

A couple of months ago, Techland pushed back the release of first-person zombie kicker Dying Light: The Beast by four weeks “to allow for extra polishing work”. I guess that work took less time than they expected, but only slightly less time. After moving the launch back to September 19, it’s now been moved forward again. To September 18.

“Seeing the excitement from our community for the return of Kyle Crane in Dying Light: The Beast,” said franchise director Tymon Smektała, “and knowing the game is ready, we wanted to do something special for our players. We pushed ourselves to make the impossible possible, and that’s why we’re releasing the game a little earlier. I can’t wait to see players’ reactions when they finally step into the world of The Beast.”

More than a million players have pre-ordered Dying Light: The Beast, and Techland is eager to keep them happy. They and anyone else who pre-orders has been promised “an exclusive new reward”, though what that reward is they haven’t said. It’ll apparently be revealed during launch week.

Our own FPS expert Morgan Park got to play an hour-long demo of The Beast and came away impressed by its size. Though it started life as an expansion for Dying Light 2, and will still be free for anyone who forked out for Dying Light 2: Ultimate Edition, it’s apparently closer to a full new entry in the Dying Light series.

“The Beast is a much larger game than I assumed it’d be based on its non-numbered subtitle”, Morgan said. “It has a completely new map, characters, and story—Smektała said his last playthrough was around 37 hours with the main story and sidequests considered. It’s not a standalone expansion, it’s the next Dying Light game.”

Hades 2 release date announced for Switch consoles and PC

by admin September 13, 2025

Hades 2 has landed itself a full fat release date.

As shared during this afternoon’s Nintendo Direct, Supergiant’s action-roguelike sequel will release on 25th September across Switch and Switch 2, as well as PC, following a stint in early access on Steam. Yes, you can play it now.

You can check out a new trailer for Hades 2 below.

Early Access players on PC will automatically update to the full release for free. For Switch players, the Switch 2 upgrade is available for free. The newer console will offer 120fps in docked mode. Cross saves across all platforms will also apply.

In April, Supergiant Games announced Hades 2 would be a timed console exclusive on Switch and Switch 2.

“Supergiant’s first ever sequel may feel very comfortable and familiar, but Hades’ best weapon remains the power of surprise,” reads Eurogamer’s Hades 2 early access review from last year.

Hades 2 version 1.0 finally has a release date, praise Zeus and the rest of them

by admin September 13, 2025

Supergiant Games have finally done The Thing, following some patch teases that’d left things in a bit of an ‘either go or get off the pot’ situation. Hades 2’s full release is nigh, with version 1.0 set to drop later this month.

I’m pleased, because the sequel to the horniest ancient Greek roguelike of all time was already very good in early access form. I’m also terrified, because it’s not like September hasn’t already had enough games to fight for my attention, between Silksong and Borderlands 4. I mean, I’ve not gotten around to playing either of those yet, because basketball, but hey.

Watch on YouTube

Anyway, Hades 2 version 1.0 arrives September 25th, as announced during today’s Nintendo Direct. That showcase featured the launch trailer you can check out above, which teases the battle “beyond the underworld” which awaits Melinoë as she continues her war against Chronos, the insufferable time fellow.

Developers Supergiant have confirmed in a post on Steam that this update’ll be free so long as you already own the early access version of the game, while the current price will be staying the same if you’re buying for the first time. 1.0 also brings “cross-saves between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions and the version here on Steam”, if you want to utterly betray your PC roots and build on your progress over on one of the Mario devices.

“Hades II is our team’s first-ever sequel, and we’ve been giving it everything we’ve got for more than four and a half years,” the devs added. “Since May of 2024, we’ve been developing in Early Access, taking feedback from our player community to try and fully realize this game’s potential. The result is the biggest game we’ve ever made, and one we hope you’ll find to be a worthy successor to its namesake.”

Our Brendy wrote the following about Hades 2 when he reviewed its initial early access version last year:

Roguelikes, I feel, don’t suffer as much as other genres from the early access path. The first Hades did it and it quickly became one of our best action games. So, I hereby grant you permission to crack through as much as this follow-up has got to offer, to get briefly obsessed, and then to put it aside for months. The piecemeal, adaptive storytelling is still there too, eschewing anything so simple as the classic three-act structure. Which, for me, makes long absences that much easier to bear. Like the game’s own shrouded Narcissus, Hades 2 is already inviting and attractive, even in its unfinished form.

Now, get out of the Melinoë, I’ve got to go remind myself how to do a Hades so my first version 1.0 run doesn’t end in embarrassing fashion after about three rooms.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Hyrule Warriors prequel has been given a release date

by admin September 13, 2025

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment now has a release date, following its previously stated “winter” launch window.

As revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct, the game will release on Switch 2 on November 6.

This latest in the Warriors spin-off series acts as a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom, focusing on Zelda’s story. Check out some fresh gameplay in the video below. The trailer goes into detail about Sync strikes (special moves used with two allies) and how Zonai devices can be used to modify the flow of battle. You will also be able to play with two players across two devices, even if only one person owns the game. Thanks Nintendo!

Age of Imprisonment follows Age of Calamity, which similarly acted as a prequel to Breath of the Wild.

Both games were preceded by Hyrule Warriors on Wii U (later ported to Switch), developed as a collaboration between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo.

Gameplay follows that of Koei’s Dynasty Warriors games, known for their large-scale battles and hordes of enemies to defeat.

Age of Imprisonment was first revealed at the Switch 2 Direct in April.

Valve appear to be blocking mature themed games from Steam early access release

Valve appear to be blocking mature themed games from Steam early access release

by admin September 13, 2025

For a week or so now, we’ve heard rumblings that Valve are preventing the creators of games with “mature themes” from releasing their games in Steam early access. At least two developers have disclosed that they’re affected – Dammitbird, creators of raunchy fantasy RPG Heavy Hearts (do not click unless you are happy to look at a werewolf’s penis), and Blue Fairy Media, creators of The Restoration of Aphrodisia (do not click unless you are happy to read about lewd transformations).

Dammitbird have screencapped and shared a message from Steam’s submissions team, via Ana Valens on Bluesky. It reads: “Your app has failed our review because we’re unable to support the Early Access model of development for a game with mature themes. Please resubmit when your app is ready to launch without Early Access.”

The Blue Fairy Media folks have posted about a similar rejection message, adding “we can confirm our title was hit by this as well after multiple weeks of back and forth in the review process with absolutely no mention of this policy prior.”

Whether this is a new policy from Valve remains a little unclear. The platform holder’s early access submission documentation doesn’t make any stipulations about “mature themes” at the time of writing, and there are mature-themed early access games currently in development, which suggests it’s a recent shift of direction. On the other hand, one adult game developer, Drooskati, has posted screens of a comparable rejection message from June 2024.

Valve have yet to reply to my request for comment, sent about 10 days ago. Assuming they are now prohibiting mature-themed games from early access, all this is probably a continuation of the industry-wide crackdown on sexually themed or explicit videogames, instigated by payment processing networks earlier in the year.

This summer, Valve changed Steam’s rules to give banks, payment processors and card companies a say on what constitutes acceptable NSFW material. Then, they delisted a bunch of games. According to Valve, it was either that or risk payment processing partners blocking Steam transactions at large.

Itch.io have also been affected by the payment processor ban on “mature themes”. The indie store delisted thousands of games in July, and are now seeking out new payment processing partners who are happy to deal in adult material.

The situation has been clouded by the refusal of various participants to take responsibility for the delistings and removals. In August, Mastercard insisted that they have “not evaluated any game or required any restrictions” on Steam, while Valve contend that payment processors have told the platform holder they’re acting to ensure compliance with Mastercard’s policies.

I had a go at explaining the broad strokes of how payment networks police the definition of acceptable sex in videogames last month. The short version is that payment networks often end up being enlisted as unofficial enforcers of laws and taboos around sexual material, by dint of their control of economic activity. They are horribly ill-equipped to serve this purpose, however, because they are corporations with brands to protect. If a sufficiently large or vocal group can make a fuss about the transaction of any particular type of commodity, the corps may feel compelled to pull support.

The enforced policy changes on Steam and Itch.io appear to reflect a new reactionary campaign against sexual themes or material in art or entertainment, and especially queer art deemed abhorrent by conservatives. The Australian lobby group Collective Shout have claimed credit for bringing about Steam’s policy changes by applying public pressure to Mastercard, Visa and others. They published an open letter in July co-signed by two religious anti-porn and anti-sex work organisations, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and Exodus Cry.

Collective Shout and their affiliates have said that they’re campaigning against representations of sexual violence and objectification that could contribute to violence towards women and girls. They have yet to provide details of the individual games they find disagreeable, however, or demonstrate how they are or might be harmful.

In the meantime, a large number of developers have been deprived of a livelihood. Eurogamer recently published a feature based on interviews with several of the queer developers affected that is worth a read. I’ll let you know as and when Valve update us on their early access policies.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond finally gets release date, plus Samus on a motorbike

by admin September 13, 2025

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has finally received a release date from Nintendo, following months of speculation.

As revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct livestream, Metroid Prime 4 will release on 4th December across both Switch and Switch 2.

The announcement came with a fresh look at the game, including Samus on a motorbike. Yes, you read that correctly.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Direct 9.12.2025Watch on YouTube

Back in June, an advertisement for the game was seen on the London Underground stating the game was “out now”, though this was swiftly debunked by Nintendo.

Still, while the game officially had a 2025 launch window, rumours of a delay intensified over the summer, though Nintendo remained committed to a release this year.

In July the game popped up on the Korean ratings board and then, a month later, was rated by the ESRB. As such, a proper release date has been hotly anticipated.

Metroid Prime 4 is the long-awaited latest entry in Nintendo’s sci-fi series, that once again follows bounty hunter Samus Aran in first-person. This time, though, she’s got psychic powers.

I went hands-on with Metroid Prime 4 at Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch event, but wasn’t completely convinced by its mouse controls.
