Recreated dire wolves Romulus and Remus reach their first birthday

by admin October 3, 2025

The ‘dire wolves’ that were brought back from extinction, Romulus and Remus, are celebrating their first birthday.

In April 2025, Colossal — a bioscience and genetic engineering company — revealed its magnum opus to the world: three dire wolf pups they claimed to have brought back from extinction.

Dire wolves, best known for their appearance in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones book series and subsequent HBO show, have been extinct for over 12,500 years. They differ significantly from the modern-day wolf due to their large size, wide heads, and powerful jaws, as well as a massive bite force and teeth specially adapted for crushing bones.

In a marvelous scientific feat, geneticists at Colossal reconstructed their best possible estimate of the dire wolf genome using the surviving DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth, alongside a 72,000-year-old skull, of healthy dire wolf pups.

Using gene-editing technology, these scientists modified the DNA of modern gray wolves to give them the specific traits that are characteristic of dire wolves (large size, wide heads, and bone-crushing jaws).

So, while it isn’t exactly a Jurassic Park-style resurrection of an ancient animal, Colossal has made a strikingly similar recreation of the dire wolf using the genes of a close relative in the grey wolf.

The reveal of these three dire wolves resulted in equal parts awe and criticism from onlookers. A year later, two of them are now celebrating their first birthday to great fanfare from Colossal.

The two boys, Romulus and Remus, were aptly named for the mythological twin founders of Rome, whose legend says they were suckled at the teat of a she-wolf after being abandoned as infants. Their little sister, Khaleesi, was named after one of the many titles of the Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen.

In celebration of their first birthday, Colossal partnered with MISHKA Dog Boutique to create a gourmet cake for the two brothers, made of beef pate, agar-agar and vegetable juices. Yum!

As per a news release from Colossal, Romulus and Remus both weigh over 120 lbs and currently eat over five lbs of meat a day. Their diet includes a mixture of “ground meat, stew-sized chunks, and portions of carcasses such as deer, cattle, or whole rabbits,” as well as bones to chew on and small game within their enclosure.

The wolves occupy a 2,000+ acre ecological preserve, which includes a “six-acre secure area houses an on-site veterinary clinic, wolf management facility, storm shelter, and natural dens for closer care and study.” They are cared for by ten full-time employees.

Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi are just the start of Colossal’s dire wolf project; the company says it intends to create an entire pack of 6-8 dire wolves when all is said and done.

This isn’t the first scientific marvel Colossal has been able to achieve as of late; they went viral in March for using gene-splicing tech to create a mouse with fur from a woolly mammoth.

Tony Hawk Recreated THUG’s Classic Intro And Fans Are Excited

by admin September 16, 2025

It was just earlier this year that Activision published Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, a remastered collection of two of the best games in the skateboarding series. But now, after a fun video from Hawk himself, fans are once again begging for a Tony Hawk’s Underground remake to join the series’ slate of recent re-releases.

Over the weekend, Tony Hawk posted a short video on his personal Instagram page. In it, the skateboarding legend re-created the intro cutscene found in the original PS2-era Tony Hawk’s Underground. Here’s the short video:

In the video, Hawk can be seen taking on the role of the player-created character, even wearing a similar outfit to the one sported by the default character. Using some nice editing, Hawk interacts with the game’s popular villain, Eric Sparrow, even calling him a bully at one point. At the very end, Hawk leaves and jokes, “Whoa! I can get off my board?!”, a reference to the fact that in THUG players could, for the first time in franchise history, hop off their skateboards and walk around levels.

But before you get too excited and assume Tony Hawk is teasing some future Underground remake ala THPS 3+4, calm down. The video is marked as “Not a THUG promo.” Hawk also claims that the reason he created this short bit of nostalgia bait is to have some fun and celebrate Video Games Day.

“In hopes of bringing some joy to your timeline: Happy Video Games Day from E.S. and me,” posted Hawk on Instagram.

And like, yeah, I get that he’s trying to make it clear this isn’t a teaser, but of course, the internet is going to internet. Many are already assuming or hoping that this Instagram post is actually the first bit of marketing for a full-on Tony Hawk’s Underground remake. And while I do think a Tony Hawk’s Underground remake is coming one day, I do believe Hawk here, and this is just him having fun with fans. The famous skater has said in the past that he would love a THUG remake, but made it clear that he doesn’t get to make that call. It’s all up to Activision, and considering the five-year gap between THPS 1+2 and THPS 3+4, I’d suggest fans go play THUGPro or something else while they wait for a THUG remake, because it’s likely many years away.

Someone Recreated All Of Robocop As The Cracker Barrel Logo

by admin August 25, 2025

After nearly 50 years, Cracker Barrel changed its logo last week. You probably heard or read something about it, as news of the change and the reaction to it became one of the biggest topics on the internet. And so, somehow, that leads us to a person online replacing the Cracker Barrel logo with the entirety of Robocop from 1987.

On August 23, a few days after the Cracker Barrel news had swept the internet and sparked countless blogs and articles (even we wrote about it), Twitter user Kodiak posted to the dying social media site the “full 1987 film RoboCop rendered as the Cracker Barrel logo.” You might be wondering a few things, namely: Why? Well, don’t worry, Kodiak doesn’t want to leave you with a mystery. Why did they re-render RoboCop as the Cracker Barrel logo?  “Because nothing matters,” posted Kodiak.

Is this the ideal way to watch RoboCop? Some might say yes. At least one person has seemingly watched the film on their big screen TV, which is fun to think about. Another question you might be pondering—between never-ending thoughts about Cracker Barrel’s new, boring logo and what it means in relation to modern-day society—is a simple one: Is this legal? I’m not a lawyer. I’d probably say no, but these days it really does seem like law and order is out the window, and the rich and powerful can do whatever they want. Ohhh….wait, now I get why they picked RoboCop for this joke. Funny! (Shout out to Garbage Day for spotting this.)

Anyway, go ahead and watch RoboCop until Twitter kills the video. At the moment, it has over 550k views, so it seems like Elon Musk and whoever still works at Twitter don’t care. Or they forgot the password to the account that lets them delete stuff. Either way, enjoy RoboCop. Or you can go buy and play that awesome RoboCop game from a few years back. Do both at the same time? What do I care? I’m not your dad.
