The Painkiller Reboot Gets An October Launch Date

by admin June 25, 2025

At the final, all-virtual E3 in 2021, Koch Media announced a reboot of the 2004 shooter Painkiller was in development. Today, we learned players will make their return trip to Purgatory on October 9.

While the original Painkiller was created by Outriders/Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly, this modern reimagining – simply titled Painkiller – is made by Anshar Studios and published by 3D Realms. Despite the change in creators, the new game shares thematic similarities with its predecessor. Players are trapped in Purgatory and must fight their way out to prevent the fallen angel, Azazel, from invading Earth. Instead of controlling a single protagonist, however, the first-person shooter lets players select from four playable characters: Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch, each with distinct traits.

Painkiller can be played alone, but it also features three-player online co-op. In addition to blasting apart demons with a variety of supernaturally-enhanced firearms (both classic and new), you can upgrade abilities using tarot cards.

Painkiller will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 9. A Standard Edition of the game costs $39.99, and pre-ordering it earns you the Iron Crusade skin pack for characters and weapons. A Deluxe Edition runs for $49.99 and includes the skin pack plus three post-launch DLCs that will include additional character/weapon skins.

Skate reboot "just months away" from launch, as playtests open up to all who register before end of June

Skate reboot “just months away” from launch, as playtests open up to all who register before end of June

by admin June 18, 2025

EA’s free-to-play Skate reboot is officially gearing up to launch into early access this “summer”, narrowing down its previous “2025” release window. But first, it’ll receive its “biggest playtest update” yet, which will be made available to all registered Insiders starting on 2nd July.

This latest iteration of Skate was formally unveiled in 2022 as an “authentic evolution” of the beloved skateboarding series, and is being developed by Full Circle, a studio specifically set up to work on the project. Its team – which includes original Skate creators Deran Chung and Cuz Parry – has been intermitently sharing progress reports since then, and select players have even been able to participate in early closed playtests.

Playtests were expanded to consoles at the start of this year (and were rapidly followed by microtransactions), and EA now says it’ll be opening playtests up to everyone, provided they’ve registered their interest before 27th June. This comes ahead of Skate’s “biggest playtest update yet”, which will pave the way for its early access release this “summer”.

Skate’s impending update is officially titled Update 0.27.0, and promises “upgrades, changes, fixes, and performance improvements”. EA goes into a little more detail in its blog post, but playtest participants can expect a visual overhaul, bringing the likes of increased environmental detail, improved lighting and shadows, better textures and effects, UI enhancements, and an increase in players per server to 150.

That’s alongside more missions and challenges – EA says players will now find over 140 challenges around the city of San Vansterdam – plus expanded character customisation options (including more hairstyles, gestures, and emotes), and overhauled progression and rewards.

EA’s blog post also contains answer to some frequently asked questions (no to keyboard and mouse support, yes to cross-progression, for instance), but the important bit is that anyone wanting to experience Skate’s impending playtest update on 2nd July will need to have registered as an Insider by 27th June, with access invitations set to go out in waves. Registration will no longer be available after this point, as Full Circle makes final preparations for Skate’s “summer” early access launch. It sounds like summer might be nearing its end by the time Skate arrives, however, given EA also says the game is now “just months away”.

Bungie's Marathon reboot delayed indefinitely in response to "passionate" fan feedback

Bungie’s Marathon reboot delayed indefinitely in response to “passionate” fan feedback

by admin June 17, 2025

Bungie has announced an indefinite delay for its live-service extraction shooter Marathon, citing the community’s “passionate” feedback following its reveal in April and a subsequent playtest.

Bungie formally unveiled its Marathon reboot in May 2023, but the response wasn’t an immediately enthusiastic one, given the decision to ditch the classic Marathon series’ single-player focus in favour of PvP – and the reboot has largely remained in the news for all the wrong reasons since then. It’s faced leadership changes and substantial legal challenges, it’s seen ongoing reports of declining staff morale and accusations of toxicity aimed at Bungie management, it’s been embroiled in a plagiarism scandal, and more.

April’s big reveal, then, was a chance for Bungie to shift the narrative to something more positive. But reactions weren’t especially kind – some went as far as to draw comparisons with Sony’s ill-fated Concord – and it seems Marathon’s alpha playtest last month also generated substantial negative criticism, judging by Bungie’s latest blog post.

“Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest,” the studio wrote, “but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps. Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We’ve taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion.”

As a result, and “after much discussion”, Marathon will no longer launch on 23rd September as originally announced, and has instead been indefinitely delayed. “The alpha test created an opportunity for us to calibrate and focus the game on what will make it uniquely compelling,” Bungie continued. “We’re using this [extra] time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience that a title like Marathon is built around.”

As it looks to get Marathon back on track, Bungie will hold more closed testing over the “next few months”. These will bring new game updates and features, with the studio’s “immediate focus” being on the following:

  • Upping the Survival Game
    • More challenging and engaging AI encounters
    • More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
    • Making combat more tense and strategic
  • Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
    • Increased visual fidelity
    • More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
    • A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
  • Adding more social experiences
    • A better player experience for solo/duos
    • Prox chat, so social stories can come to life

Bungie says it’ll provide a progress update, alongside a revised release date, some time this autumn. “Thank you again for your patience and – much more importantly – your passion,” it concluded. “Your continued feedback will help us make Marathon the incredible gaming experience we all know it can be.”

Charles Hoskinson floats $100m ADA treasury reboot to stabilize Cardano ecosystem

by admin June 14, 2025

With just $31 million in stablecoins against $356 million in total value locked, Cardano’s founder has proposed unprecedented treasury diversification into Bitcoin and native dollar-pegged assets to boost the network’s decentralized finance and stablecoin ecosystem.

On June 12, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson proposed the idea in a YouTube video of swapping $100 million worth of Cardano (ADA) tokens for Bitcoin (BTC) and native stablecoins USDM and USDA to strengthen the ecosystem.

Hoskinson framed the treasury overhaul as a strategic bet on Cardano’s future as a multi-asset financial ecosystem. Drawing inspiration from sovereign wealth funds in Norway and Abu Dhabi, he argued that converting a portion of ADA’s treasury into yield-generating assets would unlock liquidity and signal serious confidence to institutional players.

A strategic fix for Cardano’s liquidity imbalance

In his remarks, Hoskinson addressed the stark disparity between Cardano’s treasury composition and its decentralized finance ambitions. His argument stemmed from what he termed Cardano’s “stablecoin drought”, a glaring imbalance that’s stifling development.

“We have a treasury with about $1.5 billion of ADA, and yet there’s only about $30 million of stablecoins in the entire Cardano ecosystem,” he said. “That’s a problem.”

For context, while Ethereum boasts $190 in stablecoins for every $100 of TVL, Cardano lags far behind with just $9. “This isn’t just lagging behind; it’s choking our ecosystem,” Hoskinson argued.

According to him, the proposed conversion aims to boost stablecoin reserves by targeting a 33% to 40% stablecoin-to-TVL ratio and to prime Bitcoin-focused decentralized finance by allocating $25 million to $50 million to Bitcoin to attract yield-seeking holders. Hoskinson also believes the move could improve the chances of Cardano-native stablecoins being listed on tier-two and tier-three exchanges.

While some traders on X voiced concern that liquidating $100 million in ADA would crash the market, Hoskinson dismissed the skepticism with a chuckle, claiming, “ADA’s liquidity can swallow this without a 1% price blip.”

He emphasized that the proposed treasury shift wouldn’t be a reckless exchange dump but a carefully managed operation using time-weighted average price algorithms and over-the-counter desks, the same tools institutional players use to quietly shift nine-figure positions. “This isn’t some meme coin we’re talking about,” he stressed.

Whether the move turns Cardano into a decentralized finance powerhouse or backfires depends largely on timing and sentiment management.

After parting ways with EA, WRC gets new home and six-year deal to "reboot" rally series

After parting ways with EA, WRC gets new home and six-year deal to “reboot” rally series

by admin May 27, 2025

A month after EA announced it was ending its partnership with the World Rally Championship, and “pausing development” on all future rally games, publisher Nacon has revealed it’ll be the new home of official WRC titles starting 2027, in an agreement initially spanning six years.

EA inherited the World Rally Championship license as part of its acquisition of UK racing game specialist Codemasters in 2021, and its first WRC title – EA Sports WRC – released two years later in 2023. Last month, however, the publisher revealed it had “reached the end of the road working on WRC”, leaving the future of rally gaming somewhat uncertain given it also confirmed it was laying off staff and “pausing development plans on future rally titles”.

But less than a month later, a fresh World Rally Championship deal has been struck with a new company, Nacon – the publisher behind the likes of RoboCop: Rogue City and last year’s disappointing Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. It’s perhaps not a huge surprise, given Nacon (formerly Bigben Interactive) previously held the WRC license between 2013 and 2022, and released nine titles in that time, culminating in WRC Generations.

EA’s first – and only – WRC effort launched in 2023..Watch on YouTube

As detailed in today’s announcement, Nacon’s new agreement “covers the development and publishing of the official WRC games and eSports competitions, granting [the company] exclusive rights for PC and consoles for six seasons, from 2027 through 2032.”

Nacon adds it’s now set to begin development of an “all-new WRC game series, aiming to deliver an immersive experience that faithfully reflects the reality of the championship and meets the expectations of both rally enthusiasts and new players”. These titles will mark a “complete reboot of the franchise”, and will include the likes of official rallies, vehicles, teams, drivers, and sponsors.

“After a comprehensive evaluation, we are delighted to have reached an agreement with Nacon,” World Rally Championship chief marketing officer Arne Dirks said in a statement accompanying today’s new. “[Its] vision for the franchise stands out, and their expertise in delivering great rally games is unquestioned. We look forward to breaking new ground together in this collaboration, to truly turn the WRC games into epic adventures and offer gaming experiences beyond rally as we know it today.”

The most recent game to release under the WRC license was the Codemasters-developed EA Sports WRC, which launched in 2023. Eurogamer called it a “joyous and rugged display of rally racing, with exquisite handling, lightly flecked by technical issues”, in our four star review.

Nvidia releases emergency RTX 5060-series firmware to fix blank screens on reboot

by admin May 25, 2025

Many RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti users encounter blank screens when restarting their systems. Nvidia has released an update to resolve this problem, not through a new driver, but as a firmware update for the GPU, also known as the vBIOS. The report strictly advises that only users experiencing this problem should update their firmware.

The problem likely stems from how Nvidia’s vBIOS communicates with the system’s BIOS/UEFI. If your motherboard does not support UEFI boot mode, Nvidia recommends contacting the customer service of your GPU manufacturer for a legacy vBIOS update. The exact culprit hasn’t been specified, but the fact that Nvidia is providing a fix strongly implies that part of the problem is within their domain.

Nvidia’s RTX 50 GPUs have struggled with stability and compatibility, starting with the problematic R570 branch of drivers, which even affected older RTX 20/30/40 series GPUs. Having experienced these issues first-hand, it took Nvidia multiple weeks to address most of them with the 576.02 update. If your RTX 5060 or RTX 5060 Ti throws a black or blank screen on reboot, you may need to update its vBIOS. An abrupt power outage during firmware updates can potentially brick your GPU, so proceed cautiously.

You may like

Fortunately, Nvidia’s provided utility can verify compatibility with your system’s firmware and determine if a vBIOS update is necessary. Nvidia recommends only installing this update if you’re encountering blank screens. To apply the fix, you must first boot into the Operating System, which might be a hassle given the current predicament. Nvidia suggests the following temporary workarounds to boot with a display:

  • Completely power down your system before booting.
  • Ensure you are using the latest SBIOS from your motherboard vendor.
  • Ensure you are in UEFI boot mode and not Legacy/CSM.
  • Boot using an alternate graphics source (secondary card or integrated graphics).
  • After powering on your system, wait for your operating system to load with the graphics driver installed.

Download the NVIDIA GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool v2.0 to apply the update, run the executable, and follow the on-screen instructions. Interestingly, this issue only impacts the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti family of GPUs, both based on GB206 silicon. This raises the question of why older RTX 50 cards are unaffected. What specific changes in these GPUs led to this problem?

The grimdark Pac-Man reboot has a classic Pac-Man game hidden inside it

by admin May 22, 2025

Bandai Namco’s bold new take on Pac-Man — the 2D action platformer known as Shadow Labyrinth — has a secret: Despite being a grim sci-fi, Metroid-inspired game that looks nothing like a traditional Pac-Man sequel, there’s actual real Pac-Man gameplay in here. A new trailer for Shadow Labyrinth reveals the Maze, a portion of the game that for shorthand purposes looks a hell of a lot like Pac-Man Championship Edition 3.

The core gameplay of Shadow Labyrinth has players controlling a mysterious warrior named Swordsman No. 8, who is accompanied by a Pac-Man shaped guide named Puck, battling to become the apex predator of an alien planet. But at certain points in Shadow Labyrinth, you’ll play honest-to-goodness Pac-Man maze levels that draw inspiration from the Championship Edition line of pellet- and ghost-chomping games. Shadow Labyrinth’s take on Pac-Man gameplay adds to the Championship Edition formula, with jumping, boost pads, giant ghost boss battles, and a variety of maze types.

In other words, if Shadow Labyrinth hasn’t quite done it for you thus far, it might be worth checking in on your feelings after watching the game’s new trailer.

Shadow Labyrinth will be released on July 18, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
