Is Online Baccarat Legal in Canada? Read Before Playing

by admin October 2, 2025

Online baccarat holds a strong reputation as one of the most elegant casino games, both on the floor and behind the screen. In Canada, players who want to join a baccarat table from home face a unique legal setup.

Unlike many countries with a single federal framework, Canada leaves gambling law in the hands of its provinces — and this quilt of laws can create some confusion about legality and licensing.

Knowing where a casino is regulated, what authorities oversee it, and how disputes are handled helps anyone who wants to enjoy baccarat online with peace of mind.

Is Baccarat Legal in Canada? An Overview

Baccarat itself is legal to play online in Canada, but the rules that govern access vary depending on where you live. Gambling law is managed at the provincial level, so there is no single national regulator that covers every Canadian player. Instead, each province decides how to authorise online casinos, how to license operators, and how to protect players.

Ontario stands apart with its open market model, where multiple private companies can offer casino games under the oversight of AGCO and iGaming Ontario.

Other provinces rely on their lottery corporations, which provide government-operated sites for residents. Offshore casinos still accept Canadian players, though these are not officially sanctioned under Canadian law and carry different risks.

Live Dealer Baccarat

Live dealer baccarat has become one of the most popular online formats in Canada, and one that’s especially enjoyable once you learn baccarat rules before you play due to its quick flow. Players enjoy the chance to stream real-time tables, interact with professional dealers, and follow a more authentic casino rhythm.

These games operate from studios equipped with cameras, sensors, and advanced software to broadcast results instantly.

In Canada, live dealer legality depends on provincial oversight. Ontario-licensed platforms host games from certified providers that meet AGCO standards. Lottery-run sites in other provinces also partner with approved studios, though their selections may be more limited.

The Provincial Model Explained

Canada operates under a decentralised gambling model. Each province has the right to regulate its own gambling services, both land-based and digital. For players, this means that the legality of playing baccarat online depends largely on location.

Some of the oversight and licensing organs are:

  • AGCO in Ontario
  • The Kanawahke Gaming Commission
  • PlayNow in British Columbia
  • EspaceJeux in Québec

Ontario Licensed Casinos and Private Operators

Ontario is the only province that has opened its online casino market to private operators. The framework is built on a partnership between AGCO, which regulates and audits operators, and iGaming Ontario, which manages contracts and revenue sharing.

To operate in Ontario, an online casino must secure approval from AGCO and sign an agreement with iGaming Ontario. This process guarantees that operators meet requirements on fairness, security, and player protection. It also ensures that taxes and fees flow back into provincial programs.

The competition created by this offers players access to dozens of licensed sites that feature baccarat and other games under strict oversight. Compared to lottery-run platforms in other provinces, the variety is far broader.

How Other Provinces Handle Online Casinos

Outside Ontario, players primarily rely on government-operated casino sites. These platforms are overseen by each province’s lottery corporation or regulatory authority. Offshore casinos may still accept Canadian players, but they are not provincially sanctioned.

British Columbia

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation operates PlayNow, offering slots, table games, and live dealer options to residents. It is the province’s sole legal platform.

Quebec

Loto-Québec runs EspaceJeux, which provides an integrated online casino tied to its lottery offerings. All activity falls under its oversight.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan

Manitoba players can use PlayNow through a revenue-sharing agreement with British Columbia. Saskatchewan, on the other hand, launched a regulated online platform in partnership with the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA).

Alberta

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission oversees PlayAlberta, which is the only government-approved casino site in the province.

Atlantic Provinces

In New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Lottery operates a joint platform offering casino and lottery games.

Across these regions, each provincial gaming authority controls who can provide online gambling, leaving little room for private competition.

Verifying a Casino License in Canada

Knowing how to confirm whether a casino is legal is crucial for Canadian players. Many offshore sites operate without local authorisation, and the risks of using such platforms include unclear dispute processes or slow withdrawals.

Thankfully, the process of checking a licence is straightforward and worth taking the time to complete before placing any wagers.

  1. Check the operator’s website footer. All of the best casinos in Canada display their licence details, including the issuing authority.
  2. Confirm the regulator’s seal. Clicking on logos such as AGCO or iGaming Ontario should redirect to an official confirmation page.
  3. Cross-reference with government sites. Provinces publish lists of licensed operators, making it easy to double-check.
  4. Look for KYC and responsible gambling details. Legitimate casinos explain age checks, deposit limits, and self-exclusion tools.
  5. Pay attention to offshore-only licences. If the site only lists authorities outside Canada, it is not provincially approved; this doesn’t mean that the casino is unsafe, just that it’s licensed elsewhere.

Taking these steps helps players avoid disputes down the line.

Age Limits and Access Rules

Canadian provinces enforce strict age requirements for online gambling. KYC (Know Your Customer) processes confirm player identity before access is granted.

  • Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec: minimum age is 18.
  • All other provinces and territories: minimum age is 19.
  • Verification requires ID such as a driver’s licence or passport.
  • Casinos may request additional documents if the details do not match.

Following these rules ensures compliance with laws and protects underage individuals from accessing digital casinos.

Geolocation in Canadian casinos

Geolocation technology plays a central role in regulating online casinos. Licensed sites use software that confirms a player’s physical location within provincial boundaries. If a player attempts to log in from outside the province, access is blocked.

In Ontario, this system is strictly applied across all operators registered with iGaming Ontario. Online casinos in Alberta and in British Columbia implement similar controls.

The purpose is twofold: to comply with local law and to prevent unlicensed play across borders. Understanding geolocation technology helps explain why access differs depending on where players are physically located at the time of login.

Player Protection Standards

Every province with a legal online casino market includes safeguards designed to promote responsible play. These protections are a core part of regulated gambling and give players confidence that their well-being is taken into account when engaging online.

Deposit limits allow users to control how much money they add within specific timeframes, while self-exclusion programs create options for temporary or permanent suspension from licensed sites.

Reality checks pop up during sessions to remind players how long they have been active, and access to support services links players with counselling and helplines. Monitoring tools are also built into regulated sites to detect unusual patterns that may indicate risky play.

Disputes and Complaints

Even in regulated markets, disputes may arise over withdrawals, game outcomes, or account suspensions. Licensed provinces offer structured ways to escalate complaints.

  • Step 1: Contact the casino directly. Most issues can be resolved with customer support.
  • Step 2: Use internal dispute resolution forms. Licensed operators must provide formal procedures.
  • Step 3: Escalate to the regulator. Ontario players can file complaints with iGaming Ontario or AGCO. Other provinces have lottery commissions that review disputes.
  • Step 4: Consider external arbitration. In some cases, regulators may direct disputes to independent adjudicators.

Following these steps ensures that the complaint process in Canada is fair and transparent, though offshore operators may not provide the same recourse.

Finding the Right Casinos

Choosing where to play baccarat online is just as important as knowing the legal framework. Beyond legality, though, players often weigh factors such as live dealer availability, customer support, and withdrawal processes.

The following breakdown shows what matters most when evaluating casinos — you can check our top-rated baccarat casinos and pick your favorite.

Feature Checks

Ontarian platforms stand out because they offer variety, modern features, and live dealer baccarat streamed from certified studios. Players benefit from oversight by AGCO, which makes sure fairness and compliance are upheld at every level.

Outside Ontario, residents access baccarat through government-operated platforms like PlayNow, EspaceJeux, or PlayAlberta. These sites may not have the same range of operators, but they are secure and tied directly to provincial lottery corporations; plus, revenues flow back into community programs, and play is always within legal boundaries.

Safety Checks

No matter the province, it is wise to examine factors such as customer service availability, clear terms on bonuses, and transparent withdrawal timelines. Sites that offer reliable live dealer baccarat tables and straightforward account verification create a smoother experience.

Know the Law, Play the Game

Canadian players who enjoy baccarat online benefit most when they focus on regulated platforms. Licensing authorities in each province demand strong compliance, which means safer play, clearer payments, and access to responsible gambling tools.

This framework is built to protect those who want entertainment without unnecessary risks or disputes.

What matters next is making careful choices about where to play. Ontario’s competitive market offers dozens of options, and provincial lottery platforms provide secure alternatives in other regions. Both settings are grounded in legality, but the experience differs depending on the type of site and the oversight body involved.

The safest path is to join casinos that are licensed under Canadian authority, where regulations are active, fair play is audited, and responsible gambling measures are part of the design.

Control is 90% off in the Steam Autumn Sale, meaning you can read some of the finest redacted documents in videogames for just $4

by admin September 29, 2025

Control is, for me, one of those games that can make playing everything else feel a little bit worse. Remedy simply nailed the paranormal bureaucratic atmosphere too hard. After playing Control back in 2019, I have to live with the faint wish that whatever game I spend time with would give me more opportunities to interact with unfathomable triangles. I now yearn to believe a postbox could imperil an entire town. Every collectible text document that doesn’t feature ominous redactions now feels like a wasted opportunity.

My time in the Oldest House left me with a mild yet incurable brain sickness. And it’s one that you can contract yourself for just $4 thanks to the Steam Autumn Sale. Control has only been 90% off one other time, during a weeklong sale in August. Otherwise, this is the lowest price it’s ever been on Steam.

Now, there are some detractors in the world who might try to convince you that Control’s shooting isn’t terribly impressive, so it can’t be that great. You can safely ignore these misguided souls. No matter what they’ve convinced themselves, Control isn’t a game about shooting. It’s a game about throwing forklifts with your mind.

More importantly, it’s a game where a federal bureau has an archive collecting all the nonsensical, conspiratorial mail deemed unfit for delivery by the Postal Service because it could contain paranatural insights. If you don’t get a thrill out of imagining why an organization like the FBC would redact the Pinstripe World letter, you’re beyond any help I could give you.

Plus, you’ll finally get to know why people talk about the Ashtray Maze so fondly. At $4, this is a great entry point into the growing Remedy Cinematic Universe. Or in my case, a great opportunity to buy it on Steam so I don’t have to open the Epic launcher whenever I feel like strolling the FBC corridors. Everybody wins.

GTA 5 Trevor actor feels ‘nothing inside’ for GTA 6, challenges gamers to read Crime and Punishment: ‘Books are my thing’

by admin September 22, 2025

Excited for Grand Theft Auto 6? Odds are the answer is yes. With Rockstar already calling it the “largest game launch in history” over half a year out from release, I’m pretty sure the only people who aren’t feeling some kind of way about it are uncontacted in the Amazon or… they’re Steven Ogg, who played Trevor Philips in GTA 5.

In a recent, brief chat with YouTuber HarrisonShippp, Ogg was asked how excited he was for GTA 6’s release next year. “I feel nothing inside,” answered Ogg, definitively. And just in case you’re wondering if that’s a more general cry for help, he quickly made clear he was speaking specifically about GTA: “I’m not a gamer. I’ve never played a videogame, so I feel absolutely nothing.”

Which, hey, fair enough. Some voice actors get super deep into their roles—like the cast of Baldur’s Gate 3—and for others it’s just a paycheque. Neither’s an illegitimate approach, and Ogg has made clear before that he’s not keen on GTA fans essentially treating him like Trevor in real life.

But then it gets a little weirder. “I think someone said yesterday at one point, ‘You should play GTA 5,'” recounted Ogg. “I said, ‘Why?’ They said ‘Because it’s so great!’ And I said, ‘Well one day you should read Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment’ and he went completely blank.”

Which is, uh, a bit of a non-sequitur, and I can’t help but wonder if Ogg’s interlocutor didn’t go “completely blank” because he was outmanoeuvred, but because countering a suggestion that you play GTA 5 with your own suggestion to read Dostoevsky is like responding to ‘You should try Indian food’ with ‘You should visit the proud nation of Denmark in autumn.’

“Do you know Dostoevsky? Fyodor Dostoevsky?” Ogg interrogates his interviewer, who says he does not. “So there you go,” replies Ogg. “Why don’t you read that?

“Are you excited about that book coming out?” asks Ogg, of a book which was published during the reign of Tsar Alexander II. “See? It’s the same thing. Books are my thing.”

Now, I think Ogg was trying to make a point that asking him about games was like asking someone who doesn’t read books about books, but it’s certainly quite a roundabout way of going about it, and maybe a touch pretentious. The irony is, of course, that Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov—Crime and Punishment’s murderous main character—would probably be one of the most terminally online, videogame-meme-spouting nihilist weirdos in the world if he had the misfortune to exist in 2025. He sure as hell would’ve had feelings about GTA 6.

And anyway, The Idiot is better.

The AirPods Pro 3 Can Read Your Heart Rate During Workouts, Without the Need of an Apple Watch

by admin September 11, 2025

Apple unveiled the new AirPods Pro 3 during its “awe-dropping” event Tuesday. The latest iteration of the Pro earpods has improved noise cancellation, the ability to translate other languages in real time, better and clearer sound quality, and water resistance, so it can handle your sweatiest workouts. But the AirPods Pro’s newest standout feature is its ability to read your heart rate using a small sensor implanted in the earpiece.

That means during your daily walks or workouts, your AirPods will be able to capture your heart rate using a unique infrared light sensor and a new on-device AI model that tracks heart rate and calories burned. All this data will be tracked in Apple’s Fitness app.

Additionally, the new AirPods will also give you access to Workout Buddy, a fitness feature that uses Apple Intelligence to collect your workout data, fitness history and more to personalize your workout experience. So if you’re going for a walk or run, these AirPods will function like a coach, motivating you during your workout. If you’re already an Apple Fitness Plus member, you’ll be able to use these AirPods to view your real-time performance metrics like heart rate, calories burned, Burn Bar and close the Move ring on screen.

The addition of the heart rate sensor took me by surprise, since these types of sensors are commonly used on wearables around the wrist, like the Apple Watch, or as a smart ring. However, it does make me wonder how accurate or in sync the data will be if someone owns both the AirPods Pro 3 and an Apple Watch. Now that both can record your workouts, it will be interesting to see how it plays out as people use them in the real world.

The Apple AirPods Pro 3 are now available for preorder and will hit stores next Friday, Sept. 19. Pricing starts at $249 (£219, AU$429).

8 months after moving on from Helldivers 2, Johan Pilestedt returns to thank everyone for welcoming Xbox divers into the fold: ‘All the stories I read make my heart sing’

by admin August 30, 2025

One nice thing about Helldivers 2 is that you can join random sessions with strangers all night and never find a bad egg. Emerge from the cryostasis transportation pod on another diver’s ship and you’re likely to be greeted with a salute, handshake, or hug emote. That’s just how Helldivers roll.

The community’s been on its extra-best behavior this week with an uptick of fresh recruits, as Helldivers 2 became the first Sony-published game to come to Xbox. It’s been one big welcoming party: Xbox players are sounding off on Reddit to thank the veterans helping them, walking them through confusing missions, and not freaking out when they accidentally blow the whole squad up. I’ve been playing with my fiancée every night this week, and it’s been fun to join Xbox lobbies and show them the ropes (insist on driving the car and then flipping it repeatedly).

The wholesome surge has been so nice to watch that Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead’s chief creative officer who left the Helldivers 2 team in January to work on a new game, popped back into the Helldivers subreddit to thank community members with his first post in over a year.

“Over the last couple of days I’ve seen so many comments from the new players joining the community and they are truly wonderful and inspiring. That so many are shocked by how kind and empathic this community is, shows that we need more kindness in our digital lives,” wrote Pilestedt.

“I want to say, on behalf of everyone that gave the better part of a decade to make Helldivers, that we truly appreciate all of you. From the veterans of Malevelon Creek (o7), to those that fought on Meridia, defended Super Earth and held EotS for the way you have treated and helped the new recruits joining from Xbox and elsewhere.”

While he’s still involved with the game as studio leadership, Pilestedt has relinquished his day-to-day Helldivers duties to game director Mikael Eriksson and Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani. He’s directing Arrowhead’s next game, which is still a big mystery.

“All the stories I read make my heart sing—this unity and friendship is why I make games and I look forward to a decade of Helldivers with you all.

“Now go roleplay space fascists!” he concluded.

The Xbox release of Helldivers 2 coincided with a special Halo 3: ODST-themed warbond with two armor sets and four Halo guns faithfully recreated in Super Earth’s image. The next major update comes next week, introducing underground bug missions and a new Terminid wyvern monstrosity.

Looking to Buy a Window Air Conditioner? Read This First

by admin August 27, 2025

As is the case for many people, my home cannot be retrofitted with central air. My 100-plus-year-old Brooklyn apartment, which features prominently in my seven years of air quality reporting for WIRED, relies on window air conditioning units to keep cool on our warming planet. While there is the obvious paradox that air conditioners are players in climate change, AC units are evolving with more environmentally safe refrigerants, eco modes, smart apps, modern design, and energy-efficient consumption.

That is to say, while I prefer to keep my AC units turned off, on hot days, my top-floor apartment’s temperature will climb to the upper 90s without the support of air conditioning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 700 people die every year in the United States due to extreme heat. The elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with existing medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

The number one recommendation from the CDC during extreme heat events is to stay inside an air-conditioned location. The World Health Organization warns that while electric fans can move air onto the body to create a sort of wind-chill effect, when it’s 104 degrees Fahrenheit or above, they can actually increase your body temperature. The ideal combination is using air conditioning in concert with fans to move cool air around a space.

The inability to cool down one’s body temperature is what can lead to heat stroke and other heat-related health events. Air conditioning saves lives.

I’ve been writing about air quality for WIRED since 2018, and as climate change wreaks havoc on our environment, I continue to test and review the latest window air conditioning units on the market. There are two types of window units we review: the recognizable metal box units that hang out of a window, and the increasingly popular “portable” units that use hoses—preferably two—that attach to the window. Both types of AC units offer relief from the heat and protect against heat-related illness. If you’re unsure whether you should turn on your air conditioner, you can check the CDC’s HeatRisk Tracker Map.

Professional Installation Is Worth the Money

Photograph: Lisa Wood Shapiro

LG

12,000 BTU Smart Window Air Conditioner

Your city or town may not have fines and requirements for window unit installation. New York City requires support brackets, especially for those units above sidewalks. I recently hired a professional AC company to securely install LG’s 12,000 BTU model, above. At over 80 pounds, it was too heavy for me to lift. I’ve yet to test a window unit AC where the manufacturer didn’t recommend two people for lifting and installing the unit, usually with a pictogram on the box of two people holding the same box.

Window units are designed to fit in single- or double-hung windows, usually at a minimum height opening of 13 inches. A window unit’s metal support brackets are designed to counteract the downward force of gravity. And there shouldn’t be any books, bricks, or blocks of wood used to level the unit once in the window. There are exceptions—window designs like U-Shaped ACs, like our pick below (an updated model from the one that was recalled this summer), distribute weight equally between the inside and outside of the window sash and may not require brackets.

Smart AC Units Save Money

More and more AC units connect to an app, and while some apps are easier to use than others, smart units have the added feature of turning them on and off remotely or through the use of in-app timers. Smart units have Eco Mode that run at a lower setting, as well as a variety of other features, including temperature settings. Smart ACs give the user so much more agency in knowing when to turn on or off their units.

Environmentally Friendly Refrigerant

Photograph: Lisa Shapiro

Windmill

8,000 BTU with WhisperTech

In my hometown of New York City, residents need to make an online appointment with the Department of Sanitation when placing an old air conditioner on the sidewalk for trash collection. The city removes the CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) gas, or Freon, and affixes a sticker, clearing the unit to be picked for removal. There are now more environmentally friendly refrigerants on the market, such as R600a or R32. Windmill uses R32 in its line of ACs, like our pick above, and while refrigerants like R32 have fewer ozone-depleting properties than old Freon, it is flammable. It’s that flammability that keeps municipal waste management from collecting it for disposal. Companies like Windmill have a trade-in and recycling program for their customers. If your new AC has a yellow triangle with a black flame, your refrigerant is flammable.

Sound

The rattle from a window unit can vibrate throughout a window frame—another reason why professional installation is so important. If an AC isn’t properly leveled, there’s going to be noise. Beyond the rattle of an unleveled AC, would-be AC customers can log on to a manufacturer’s website or online store to see the decibel rating for each unit. Knowing that a refrigerator’s hum is around 40 to 50 decibels and that conversation is around 60 decibels can help you choose the right sound level for you. Knowing the decibel rating is especially important for bedroom units. Will your AC keep you up on hot nights?

Directional Airflow and Filters

Photograph: Lisa Wood Shapiro

GE

Window Air Conditioner Unit, 5,000 BTU

I recently tested GE’s most affordable AC unit, above, and it was only when it was placed next to my bed that I noticed the limited choices I had in choosing the direction of airflow. It had a small grip to slide the airflow to the right, center, or left. They all felt very similar, and it was apparent that having the directional airflow option for straight-up or close to straight-up airflow is a must-have. There is little choice in where to place a window AC in a one-window room. Look for louvers that can move both up and down as well as side to side. WIRED has tested ACs with HEPA filters and with regular slide-out filters. It’s important to keep your AC’s filters clean for your unit to run properly. A clean-the-filter indicator light is an especially helpful feature.

Portable ACs for Unusual Windows

  • Courtesy of EcoFlow

  • Photograph: Lisa Wood Shapiro

Ecoflow

Wave 3 Portable Air Conditioner

Portable air conditioners are often the only choice for those with either unique or sliding windows, or for those who can’t or aren’t allowed to install a unit in their window. It wasn’t that long ago that most units on the market had a single hose that fit into a window panel with a hole that matched the circumference of the duct. A single hose has the potential of lowering the air pressure and creating a vacuum. A two-duct system like Ecoflow’s, above, is more efficient with both air intake and exhaust, and more and more smart models are app-enabled. The downside of these AC units is their large presence in the room. Many look like rectangular robots. They’re heavy, but most have wheels to make moving them easier, along with the option to have the airflow go straight up. While the design of many of the units we’ve tested has gotten more compact and sleek, the ducts are still a lot. The wide tubing isn’t easy to hide. Still, if you need an AC and cannot use a window unit, portable air conditioners are a godsend.

What Are BTUs?

British thermal unit or BTU is the measurement of the energy required to remove heat within an hour. According to the US Department of Energy, you’ll need 20 BTUs for each square foot of living space. A 300-square-foot room will require an AC with 6,000 BTUs. It’s important to know your room’s square footage. A high BTU in a small room will result in improper dehumidification, and if the BTU is too weak, it will take longer for the unit to cool the room efficiently.

Looks

Courtesy of July

In the past, window units have been necessary eyesores. They were functional, but for years little had been done to make them aesthetically pleasing. That is no longer the case, with startups like July, which makes our pick above, reimagining what a window AC looks like. There are wood-panel fronts and sleek, modern designs that blend in with the room, and that trend isn’t letting up any time soon.

Google Gemini can now read your Docs aloud

by admin August 19, 2025

Google Docs will now let you generate an audio version of your documents using AI. In a post announcing the rollout, Google says you can customize Gemini’s AI audio output with different voices and playback speeds.

This feature isn’t just for a document’s creator, as Google says readers can access a shared document’s AI-generated audio by selecting the Tool dropdown menu and selecting Audio > Listen to this tab. Authors can also add a customizable audio button directly in a document by choosing Insert > Audio, which readers can click to start listening.

Google announced plans to let you turn your documents into AI podcasts in April, but this feature seems a lot handier if you just want to listen to what you’ve written. You can only generate audio versions of documents in English and on desktop devices for now.

Google is rolling out audio in Docs to Workspace users with business, enterprise, or education plans, as well as users who have AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.
