New Game of the Week! Acts of Blood is a violent brawler inspired by The Raid & Sleeping Dogs

by admin June 2, 2025

The art of hand-to-hand combat has been captured in many different games over the years, but Acts of Blood is on the way to ratchet up the violence. Dropping a splash of Indonesian cinema into the bloody mix, it aims to mirror the bone-snapping brutality of The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, and many others.

The Raid stands tall 14 years on as one of the finest action flicks ever made, and its many follow-ups and spinoffs have been delightfully devious watches too.

There’s an indescribable tenacity to Indonesian cinema, a degree of realistic violence that’s so innately disturbing yet so engrossing you can’t help but be glued to the screen.

Despite being cultural landmarks for the region, none have attempted to bring that same ferocity to video games. At least, until now that is. Enter Acts of Blood.

What is Acts of Blood?

With the violence of Indonesian cinema at its core, Acts of Blood layers hard-hitting third-person melee systems to deliver a knockout of a brawler. It’s designed for casual players to make it through, while providing enough depth in its combat mechanics to allow for deadly combos and lethal power moves.

Set in the creator’s city of Bandung, the game follows Hendra on a quest for revenge. It’s a plot typified by the genre where our star takes matters into his own hands, hunting down those who wronged him one by one.

Hand-to-hand combat takes center stage, with Hendra skillfully dispatching waves of criminals by separating them from consciousness, snapping their bones, or smacking them into deadly objects in the environment. One level at a time, one boss at a time, you will punish those who made you hurt.

Set to be released in Summer 2026, Acts of Blood will launch with a litany of customization options, collectibles to track down, and a highly replayable arena mode.

Dexerto caught up with the game’s solo developer, Farjul, to learn all about it.

What the devs say about it

Working solo gave Farjul freedom

“I’ve been making games since junior high school back in 2010, but once I started working professionally in a game studio, things changed. The creative freedom I had as a solo developer wasn’t there anymore.

“In January 2024, something just clicked. I decided to start a new personal project, Acts of Blood. Since then, what began as a learning experiment has evolved into the full game I’m building today.

“I started this project purely because I wanted to reignite that passion I used to have when making things on my own.”

Eksil TeamYou’re a one-man army taking down warehouse-fulls of enemies.

Recreating the city of Bandung

“We don’t often see our cities, culture, or everyday environment represented in games, so I wanted to change that, even if just in a small way.

“It’s not an exact 1:1 recreation [of Bandung], but I try to capture the atmosphere, the feel of the streets, the architecture, and little details people from here will recognize. This is my way of paying tribute to my hometown while also giving players around the world a glimpse of a city beyond just our capital, Jakarta, which most other Indonesian games tend to be based on.

“Besides representing my hometown on a global scale, the city also fits well with the game’s plot, vibe, and atmosphere. Bandung is known for its cooler weather due to frequent rain compared to other cities in Indonesia. I wanted the game’s color palette to lean toward bluish tones with red accents, which fits perfectly.”

Eksil TeamActs of Blood is set in Farjul’s city of Bandung.

“The city’s biome is also more varied. Bandung blends a bustling urban environment with natural mountainous areas. From a game design perspective, this makes it easier to create diverse level environments so players won’t get bored with repetitive cityscapes.”

Violent gameplay inspired by Sleeping Dogs and The Raid

“I’m a huge fan of Gareth Evans’ and Timo Tjahjanto’s action films, and this game is basically my love letter to their work.

“We’re aiming to replicate the brutal combat and raw energy of those movies. We’ve been upfront with our publisher and other partners that we’re going all-in on violence, and they’ve been supportive.”

“Our animator, David, actually attended a silat workshop in Bali led by Yayan Ruhian (one of the actors/stuntmen from The Raid), so I think our team has the experience and passion to stay true to the spirit of those films.

“Our core combat system is inspired by Sleeping Dogs, which uses strike, counter, and finisher mechanics. However, Sleeping Dogs’ strike combos are a bit too simple. Mostly relying on tapping or holding a single attack button. That’s where Sifu comes in. We’ve added some of its complexity in attack button variations to deepen the combat.”

“The goal is to let casual players enjoy the game easily while giving more advanced players deeper combos to explore.

“Weapons are used sparingly. Guns only appear in specific areas where gunplay is required. They can also be used as melee weapons, you can actually swing a rifle at an enemy, which is a unique touch in our game.

“Since this is my first big project, I’m keeping the scope manageable. The story will be a brief, intense revenge narrative that lasts a few hours. But we’re adding achievements, collectibles, and arena modes to extend replayability.”

Plans for a follow-up

“As for the future, we do have plans. If things go well, I’d love to make a sequel that takes the concept into a small-scale open world, packed with content. Something closer to the Yakuza series. But that’s a story for another time.”

Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut Red Light Raid Mode is baffling, totally on-brand, and a weirdly good fit as part of a Nintendo Switch 2 launch game

by admin May 22, 2025

In Sega’s offices, seated in front of a Nintendo Switch 2 console running Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, I was told: “Right, now it’s time to make a lobby.” Jesus. I don’t know these people here at the event with me (I’m pretty sure I’m the only member of the UK press, actually). This is going to be awful. S**t. S**t. S**t.

The PR comes over, loads me into one of the most rudimentary lobbies I’ve seen in a game in the last 20 years, and we get going. I’m presented with a screen that looks like something from a 00s fighting game (no shame there, Tekken is great) where I’m asked to select one character from the entire Yakuza 0 roster. I choose Goro Majima, obviously.

The lead player boots us into a game, and we’re off: four ragtag Yakuza 0 models – antagonists, people you’ll see in side missions, and major characters all together – start fending off waves of hired goons. It’s stupid: four men yelling, powering up, and battering wave after wave of leather jacket-wearing thugs in the middle of a Japanese street in the 80s. Someone gets pile-drivered into a bin. Someone spins around whilst brandishing a knife until they fall over. This is Yakuza, alright, and it works weirdly well in multiplayer.

And there’s the thing, then. This version of Yakuza 0 is a Switch 2 exclusive (for now, at least). So if you want to try out this baffling rumpus of a mode, you’re going to need to shell out the £45 asking price. Is it worth it? Probably not on its own, but it is a fascinating insight into how Sega, and probably Nintendo, sees what the Switch 2 is putting down for consumers.

This mode, Red Light Raid, is silly fun. It’s an arcade-inspired, wave-based curio that focuses solely on the game’s esoteric combat and pushes the brawling mechanics of the game to breaking point in makeshift arenas that can barely contain the game’s burgeoning chaos. I imagine that with a fully-working GameChat function, you and your mates can have a blast in this mode; shouting about taking down bosses, squabbling over who gets to keep which item as they fall on the floor, jostling over weapons dropped by thugs. It’ll be fun.

It’s also a fascinating way for the RGG Studio folks to reuse assets in a fun way; the character select screen is huge. It’s got 60 playable characters! And you can level up each of the fighters, too. Completionists, watch out. I imagine it’ll take forever. Notably, if you’re playing as either Kiryu or Majima, you’ll have to choose just one style. Otherwise you’d have an unfair advantage via style switching, especially over characters like those found in the fight club that are limited to quite a small selection of moves. Then again, Ginger Chapman has a knife, and Vengeful Otake has a gun. So.

Get ready for a new challenger. | Image credit: Sega

I really can imagine whole nights of sitting in this mode and working through the various courses RGG has set you as a gauntlet. It was all a bit braindead in the early levels I played with my erstwhile colleagues at the event, but I should hope that the later levels ramp up the challenge to some degree, at least.

Chatting with mates, thumping waifs and strays over and over again, and being able to see their little low-res faces as they get their asses handed to them by shirtless men with back tattoos… is that Nintendo’s vision for the Switch 2? To have us all collected in a little lobby like the Uno/Xbox 360 days, gawping at cartoonish hyperviolence on our tiny little 4K monitors? If that’s what Ninty is putting down, I guess that’s what I’m picking up. It sounds great.

But it’s weird that it’s on Sega and RGG to release a game like this – as a launch exclusive – on Switch 2. There are other draws, sure: 26 minutes of never-before-scene cutscenes (though that’s not much in the scheme of things), and a French, Italian, German and Spanish text option now, too (this was missing before). As well as an English voiceover. So there are small temptations for you to double-dip on this, but as a locked exclusive it feels peculiar.

Watch your back. | Image credit: Sega

But isn’t it that exact sort-of off-beat weirdness that we all love Nintendo for? In a way, it reminds me of the bizarre bonus content that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 got for the Nintendo Wii U that never made it to other platforms: Mushroom Battle mode and Tekken Ball, which were sorely missed elsewhere. But it wanted to play into the Wii U’s ‘social’ side more, similar to what RGG and Sega is doing here with Red Light Raid mode… I just don’t really know who it’s for.

It’s not bad. It’s fun! And it plays really well. But you have to assume it’s going to come to other platforms, too, hopefully alongside a cheaper upgrade option so that you don’t have to buy the full product just to get the ‘definitive’ version of the game (Sega’s words, not mine). As a product on Switch 2, it looks, plays, and feels great… but let’s just hope it’s not locked onto the platform forever.

Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut launches alongside Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. Yakuza 0 originally released in 2015 on PS3 and PS4, later coming to Xbox One.

Phison's 113.6 GB/s Apex RAID demo at Computex

Phison’s Apex RAID demo showed us blistering 113 GB/s speeds in Computex demo

by admin May 21, 2025

Phison has been showcasing its data storage innovations at Computex 2025. Of particular interest, we attended a partner demo where the firm utilized 32 of its latest and greatest PCIe Gen5 SSDs in a RAID setup. During the demo, we saw CrystalDiskMark report data transfer rates as high as 113.6 GB/s for reads, and 104.6 GB/s for writes.

The PS5028 for AI Workstation Live Demo

This demonstration of extraordinary speed was enabled by a powerful modern workstation PC and a mix of cutting-edge storage components. Specifically, Phison utilized an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7978WX CPU, installed on an Asus Pro WS WRX90E-Sage SE motherboard, as the foundation of the system.

The storage subsystem consisted of 32 of Phison’s potent new E28 Gen5 SSDs installed across a trio of Apex Storage X16 Gen5 add-in cards. All these components were installed in a sweet-looking be quiet! chassis, as you can see.

Phison’s new E28 Gen5 SSD rubs shoulders with the best in consumer mid-2025 PC land. A single E28 Gen5 in a modern PC will be able to deliver data transfer speeds of up to 14.8 GB/s reads and 14.0 GB/s writes. The Phison E28 Gen5 is being marketed as “the weapon of choice for serious gaming and productivity,” so it is definitely targeting consumers. Its controller features a quad-CPU architecture, is fabbed on TSMC’s 6nm node, and supports up to 32 TB.

Here we had 32 of Phison’s new E28 Gen5 SSDs; however, each Apex Storage X16 Gen5 add-in card can fit 16 M.2 SSDs (there’s a clue in the name), so two would have sufficed for a 32x SSD demo. We guess three cards were installed for optimal performance, load balancing, or another nuance of the Threadripper-powered Windows system.

The storage performance in this setup seems remarkable. Witnessed data transfer rates as high as 113.6 GB/s for reads, and 104.6 GB/s for writes might seem amazing. However, it was confirmed by a Phison rep that the Windows kernel was actually holding back performance.

Apex Storage’s new X16 Gen5 add-in card features the PM584 Microchip switch that has 84 lanes, claimed to support the full 16 M.2 at full bandwidth. We were told each X16 Gen5 card also has a limit of 128TB of addressable storage, at this time (that would require using 32x 4TB drives).

If you are interested in the Apex Storage X16 Gen5 card, we were told that it ships in 30 days and will cost $3,995 without any storage onboard.
