Retrace Your Steps in the Hilarious Puzzle Adventure Olaf and the Crowning Hangover

by admin October 2, 2025

Olaf and the Crowning Hangover is a comedic puzzle adventure where you stumble through the aftermath of a wild, booze-filled night. Push and pull your way through to clean up your own mess, piece together the events of last night and uncover what really happened.

Olaf and the Crowning Hangover is slated to launch on Steam in Q3 2026, and there’s a demo to play right now.

Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine – October 2, 2025 | Ukraine-based Hidalgo Code has announced their upcoming comedy puzzle adventure Olaf and the Crowning Hangover will be launching on PC (via Steam) in Q3 2026.

Olaf and the Crowning Hangover is a comedic puzzle adventure where you stumble through the aftermath of a wild, booze-filled night. Push and pull your way through to clean up your own mess, piece together the events of last night and uncover what really happened.

To right Olaf’s wrongs, you’ll use a unique time-rewind mechanic that flips puzzle logic on its head. Instead of pushing crates, you’re pulling events back into place: broken chairs mend themselves, spilt ale vanishes, and the world slowly returns to order one move at a time.

“When I first created Olaf and the Crowning Hangover during a game jam in 2020, I was focused on the fun, novel puzzle mechanics inspired by a drunk viking theme,” shared solo developer Volodymyr Mikhav. “But as I developed it further, I realized a raw puzzle game wasn’t enough. For almost four years, the project stalled because I couldn’t answer a simple question: who is Olaf, and why is he doing this? It became clear that a compelling story wasn’t just an addition; it was the missing foundation the entire game needed to be built on. That foundation arrived in late 2024 with a brilliant script from a new writer, which gave the game the purpose it desperately needed. Olaf’s journey in the game mirrors my own development struggles, and I think it will resonate with anyone who understands the search for motivation and that incredible ‘aha!’ moment when everything finally makes sense.”

Olaf and the Crowning Hangover will be launching on PC (via Steam) in Q3 2026, and there’s a demo available for players to try right now. To keep up to date, be sure to follow them on X @hidalgocode & Bluesky.

Annapurna’s next three games are a turn-based musical, a Zelda-like adventure, and a puzzle game exploring a utopian society

by admin September 24, 2025

Publisher Annapurna Interactive has revealed three new games in its latest digital showcase, all of which are playable at this week’s Tokyo Game Show.

Annapurna is known for publishing well-loved games like Outer Wilds, Stray, the most recent To a T, and Eurogamer’s 2023 Game of the Year Cocoon. There are always high expectations, then, as to what it’s supporting next.

The first of these three games is D-topia, a puzzle-adventure game from Marumittu Games that features a minimalist sci-fi aesthetic as a young boy seeks to question how to find happiness if life is a utopia?

Expect choice-based gameplay and a very cute grumpy cat. It’s set for release next year across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 1 and 2, and PC (Steam, Epic).

Next up is People of Note, described as “a full fledged musical, condensed into a video game” – specifically, a turn-based RPG. The trailer shows a young female star in a singing contest, a colourful futuristic world, and musical battles against strange creatures.

Of course, any music game like this lives and breathes by its songs – thankfully, this sounds like it could have some Kpop Demon Hunters-esque bangers. It’s coming from Iridium Studios and will be out next year on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam, Epic).

Lastly, there’s the Zelda-like adventure Demi and the Fractured Dream from developer Yarn Owl. A “tribute to classic action-adventure games”, it features hack and slash combat with puzzle solving and platforming, plus ethereal visuals.

Once again, it’s due out next year across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 1 and 2, and PC (Steam, Epic).

“Annapurna Interactive is making its debut at this year’s Tokyo Game Show and we couldn’t imagine a better way to participate in this iconic event than by showcasing three great new titles from amazing indie studios,” said Leanne Loombe, head of games at Annapurna Interactive.

“From the wonderful puzzle adventure D-topia, to the catchy, innovative turn-based musical RPG People of Note, and a beautiful love letter to the classic action-adventure genre with Demi and the Fractured Dream, these games embody our vision of supporting world-class developers who are pushing the boundaries of artist story telling.”

Last year, the majority of Annapurna’s staff quit in a mass exodus following a dispute with the company’s owner.

Today’s showcase was the second since then, with February’s showcase featuring a number of games now available.

Silent Hill F Shrine Vault Puzzle Guide

by admin September 22, 2025

Silent Hill f has arrived, and while this 1960s, Japan-set game might look quite different from previous entries, it has the sort of difficult puzzles you would expect from a journey into Silent Hill. An early puzzle in the game, the Shrine Vault puzzle occurs the first time you enter the spirit realm.

This puzzle solution is for the “Hard” puzzle difficulty, which is considered the default puzzle difficulty.

Shrine Vault Puzzle

This puzzle requires you to find three symbols by spotting and flipping specific Ema located in three different spots. This occurs after receiving the ceremonial knife and following the Fox mask man into a new area, which is promptly locked with a combination lock. The map marks the three different locations, but you need to search for a specific Ema in each area. It’s not clear which Ema is found in which spot, but each area only contains one, and once you acquire the symbol, you won’t be able to interact with that area any longer.

It’s unclear if the specific Ema found in each area remains static, but only one of each appears, so if you don’t see one on the specific board you are investigating, move on to another one.

The symbols can be found on Emas with the three shown designs.

The combo lock solution is above, but the three Ema you are searching for are Lightning, Decayed Tree, and Kudzu. The last one is a pink flower accompanied by large green leaves. You can see the three different images below.

Decayed Tree symbol.Lightning symbol.Kudzu symbol.

Don’t worry about marking down the symbols on each Ema, as they are automatically added to your journal once found. Once you have all three, return to the combination lock and put them in based on the top-down order shown in the journal.

This horse-themed browser puzzle game is an absolute delight and I can’t stop playing it

by admin September 15, 2025

Another day, another adorable game that I’ve become completely obsessed with. I came across Roly-Pony this weekend during a particularly soul-sucking bout of doomscrolling, and it’s turned out to be the perfect little temporary respite from the horrors. (Shoutout to Alice Ruppert of The Mane Quest for always keeping us informed about the latest in horse games).

Roly-Pony is a Suika-style game, meaning it involves dropping and stacking round objects in order to create matching pairs that combine to become different, bigger objects. That’ll also clear up space on the board in the process, which is important because, similar to Tetris, you can’t allow the objects to pile too high. In this case, you start with horse treats and keep building on them until you’ve unlocked a bunch of different horses. It’s very simple and very cute, with peaceful music going in the background and a lot of little details that people who love horses will really appreciate.

The game is free and playable on both the web and mobile, with a leaderboard so you can see how you rank. I naively thought I would just quickly check this game out (because, horses) and move on after a few minutes, but have instead spent hours this weekend trying to crack the top 10. I’ve now got it bookmarked on both my laptop and my phone, so at this point there’s no end in sight. Roly-Pony is free, but there’s an option to send a few dollars the developers’ way on itch.io if you want to support their work.

Puzzle Quest Remaster Is Being Delisted Because It’s Being Remastered Again

by admin September 7, 2025

For a game that’s been out for 18 years, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords has had a lot of staying power, especially after the 2019 remaster, Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns. However, The Legend Returns is going to be delisted soon because Puzzle Quest is getting yet another remaster.

The new version of the game is called Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition, and it’s coming to Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 18. Infinity Plus One developed the remaster, which will include the Revenge of the Plague Lord and Challenge of the Warlords expansions.

The Immortal Edition will arrive with improved gameplay, 4K artwork, over 40 new items, and an exclusive player character class. It’s also going to feature the Attack of the Golem Lord expansion that was created for The Legend Continues.

According to Nintendo’s eShop listing, Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns will remain up until September 19. Players who already purchased the game will still be able to play it, but there will be no further updates. The Legend Returns owners will also be offered an exclusive discount for Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition. However, pricing details for the new incarnation of the game have yet to be officially disclosed.

One Of The Best Puzzle RPGs Of All Time Is Getting A Remaster

by admin September 4, 2025

Puzzle Quest, the match-3 RPG that invented the genre and arguably defines it to this day, is finally receiving the love and care it deserves. For the first time, the game—along with its many additions—is getting a remaster, boosted to HD, and released to run properly on your personal favorite gaming platform. Even better, it’s out as soon as September 18!

In 2007, when Steam was just a tiny baby, a match-3 RPG sprang out of nowhere. Puzzle Quest, by developers Infinite Interactive, casually invented an entire new genre, and immediately did it better than anyone else ever would. It was an early smash hit on Steam, walking through the door PopCap had opened just months earlier with Peggle. And wow, it was great.

Of course match-3 games were already a big deal. PopCap’s Bejeweled had taken care of that years earlier, following the path from Tetris to Dr. Mario to Puzzle Bobble. 1994 Russian DOS game Shariki takes the title of the first true match-3 game, but it was 2001’s Bejeweled that brought the concept into the mainstream, followed by the likes of the blissfully wonderful Zoo Keeper on DS in 2003. So by 2007, still long before King’s Candy Crush Saga would ruin everything with its free-to-play shenanigans, a billion Bejeweled clones meant match-3 was everywhere. It only took a genius to say, “Yes, but what if it were an RPG?”

That’s Puzzle Quest, where the matching of the three becomes an aggressive act, used to attack your computer opponent with spells and wallops, while collecting treasure and just generally feeling a zen marvelousness. In between each match, you moved around a properly RPG-like map, talked to D&D-like characters, and were told a story that gave meaning and purpose to your puzzling. This was largely thanks to the Warlords setting, introduced in 1989 with the eponymous Warlords which was created by Puzzle Quest lead Steve Fawkner. These elements together made Puzzle Quest something splendid, and best of all, it can still be bought and played today. (Should Steam ever recover from the launch of Silksong, anyway.) But man, it looks like a stray dog some 18 years later, which is why I’m so damned delighted about the reveal of Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition.

This new revision includes the game’s 2008 expansion Revenge of the Plague Lords, as well as the new content that was created for the 2019 Switch port, Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns. On top of that, there’s a new class being added, and the mysterious addition of “much more.” And gosh, it looks so shiny and new, and yet as wonderfully cluttered as it always was. This is being developed by Infinity Plus Two, the rebrand of the original Infinity Interactive that appeared in 2019, presumably with Steve Fawkner still at the helm.

Best of all, this is proper old-fashioned match-3 gaming, without all the microtransaction bullshit and ad-fueled misery that dominates the genre today. Infinity also created the extraordinary Gems of War, a live-service re-imagining of the same format that’s still receiving huge updates and new content ten years after its launch. My 10-year-old recently became astonishingly obsessed with it, and plays at a level I cannot fathom, but that comes with the constant disappointment of my refusing to pay for all three of its simultaneous battle passes every month, let alone the eight trillion “offers” it pops up with as you’re playing. (I do pay for one battle pass, I’m not a monster.)

Of course Puzzle Quest went on to receive its own sequels, including numbered follow-ups 2 and 3 and a sci-fi version called Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, as well as the F2P-riddled Marvel Puzzle Quest developed by Demiurge Studios. There was even a Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest, although I admit I’d never heard of that one until researching for this article. It’d be lovely to see PQ 2 and 3, and perhaps even Galactrix getting the same treatment soon. Let’s hope this first game’s rebirth is enough of a success. It’s coming out on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and X/S, Switch and PC (no word on a mobile version yet), so there are plenty of ways to play it come September 18.

Crossword lovers in mourning as the New York Times commits its latest unspeakable act: Paywalling the Mini puzzle

by admin August 29, 2025

There’s a tweet from early 2021 I think about more often than I should think about any tweet not written by dril, because it really does feel like it speaks to The Times We’re Living In: “Trying to explain to my parents (very gently) that basically nobody under 40 right now expects good things to happen ever again.” Overly broad? Sure: For one thing, this gloomy outlook couldn’t account for the invention of beloved puzzle game Wordle just seven months later, which has made many people happy for up to several seconds at a time.

But on a long enough timeline I’d say it proves out, because the endless march of enshittification guaranteed the New York Times would buy Wordle and eventually slap ads on it, and slowly leverage its growing empire of pleasant daily puzzles into a multi-million dollar profit scheme. We arrive now to the horrible present: The Mini crossword, most frivolous and innocent of all the NYT Games puzzles, is now, without warning, stuck behind the subscriber paywall.

“Miserable buggers. It was tiny and not particularly great, but it was something in this godforsaken capitalist hellscape,” mourns one soulful member of r/crosswords, where Redditors have been coming to terms with the sudden change.

The Mini is, indeed, tiny and not particularly great. As a crossword puzzle its defining feature is its simplicity, challenging you to clear its miniature grid in a matter of seconds rather than minutes or hours. But NYT Games has in recent years found great success and millions of dollars in profit from these sorts of snackish puzzles, many of them free to play. At least for now. With time and innovation, even the most frivolous moments of our daily routines can be effectively monetized.

The stages of grief at this dawning revelation are all laid bare in this most human of Reddit reaction threads:

DENIAL: “My guess is that’s it’s an error. In the app it’s still listed under the free games section.” On a desktop browser, a pop-up forces you to subscribe (currently with a button proclaiming you can “Save up to 75%”); using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, I confirmed that a few weeks ago, the pop-up included another button to “Play without an account. Upon updating the NYT Games Android app, the previously free daily mini puzzle appeared with a subscriber lock on its icon.

ANGER: “Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge! Gouge!”

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

BARGAINING: “We should all write a letter to the editor of the nyt. letters@nytimes.com. If the cracker barrel can get their sign back then we can get our free mini back.”

DEPRESSION: “I hate it here. Why can’t we have nice things”

ACCEPTANCE: “I bit the bullet and subscribed. Not just for the mini, but for other features they include with other games. They’re having a sale right now.”

If you receive your news from any source but The New York Times, you may rightly view this as a trifling offense in its recent history of journalism that ranges from embarrassing to gross to, uh, actively heinous. And you might further think, well, I could probably go play some daily puzzles over at Merriam-Webster. The dictionary seems pretty cool and doesn’t pay any opinion writers to chat about eugenics. That’s good thinking. Respectable. Can’t argue with it.

But that 75% off offer isn’t going to last forever, you know. And The Mini? Well, sure there are plenty of other crossword websites around, but that one’s right there in your browser history. It’s right there in the app. A guaranteed easy win. A daily affirmation that you are wise.

What’s a few bucks, the New York Times whispers, to pretend for 48 seconds every day that good things can still happen?

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S review: still a great puzzle game, but a disappointing port

by admin August 22, 2025

Why you can trust TechRadar

We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

While it’s one of, if not the oldest professions, herdsmen aren’t often represented in video game format, and after playing Okomotive’s Herdling, I struggle to understand why. Sure, if you asked me to come up with my dream game tomorrow, I probably wouldn’t start with “herding cattle”, but Herdling takes the idea and expands it into a mystical, uncanny world filled with fantastic beasts and terrifying foes.

Your role is simple: finding, taming, caring for, and guiding a herd of great calico-patterned horned beasts called Calicorns and ushering them to the mountain’s peak. Along the way, you’ll encounter various puzzles, obstacles, and foes.

Review info

Platform reviewed: Nintendo Switch 2
Available on: Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox, and PS5
Release date: August 21, 2025

  • Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S at Amazon for $29.99

From its painterly art style to its rich, emotive music, the world of Herdling is vivid and expansive, and delightful to explore thanks to a decent variety of mechanics in each level and plenty to discover and explore.

You’ll traverse verdant fields, discover abandoned man-made structures, both modern and mystical, and cross treacherous woods and mountain climes to reach the summit. While it’s not terribly long, offering 4-6 hours of gameplay, Herdling is littered with collectibles and discoverable content, making for a good amount of replayability.

Seen, but not herd

The game opens in a seemingly deserted city, as the protagonist awakens on the streets with a seemingly singular purpose: to find and herd Calicorns. This slightly claustrophobic cityscape acts as your tutorial ground, though there’s little to no instruction.

Things aren’t all as they seem, though; the presence of human life is tangible everywhere in the early stages of the game, whether that’s in trains hurtling past the open fields, lights flickering in buildings, or cars crossing open highways. Still, the manufactured world seems at odds with your new companions, so you dust off the concrete and head out into the open plains on your quest to reach the mountain’s peak, gathering more fluffy friends along the way.

It’s unclear why, bar the Calicorns, you seem to be so alone in this slightly uncanny world; Herdling asks not why, but how you’ll navigate the treacherous path to the summit. And that “how” is largely dictated by your herd.

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

You’ll find a host of Calicorns along your journey, which you can tame with a good old-fashioned head scratch and name. By standing behind them and facing in the direction you want to travel in and waving your shepherd’s crook, you can steer your Calicorns and command them to stop, go, or slow down.

You can also activate stampede mode for a speed boost, which is refuelled by guiding your herd over blue flowers and increases the more Calicorns you have tamed. Performance drops are fairly frequent during stampede mode, and as you’d expect, it becomes more challenging to guide your flock at high speeds.

In narrower portions of the map, navigation can be frustrating, especially as you collect more Calicorns, and there were more than a few moments where I feared I’d never safely negotiate the herd out of some slightly jammy corners. On the one hand, that could be by design, but I’m never a fan of chance taking the reins.

You’ll find yourself inventing all kinds of methods to keep your herd compact and controlled, but sometimes even pausing their motion can’t stop the scamps from going on walkabouts. After all, they are wild animals.

Your Calicorns aren’t your wards; they’re your companions, and help you as much as you do them! (Image credit: Okomotive)

Until you find your dream

The game is largely linear, but that doesn’t make your journey easy; you’ll have to decide on the best paths to take, navigate in and out of some tight spots with your growing, occasionally mischievous herd, and care for them to ensure they survive their passage – and yes, that does mean they can die.

Upon taking damage, the Calicorns’ vibrant coat, often dusted with petals from running amidst the flower fields and storing up stampede powers, will become slick with blood, a wound you can only heal by scrambling about the map level in search of berries to feed your friends. There is also an Immortal mode for the faint of heart; thankfully, in my first playthrough, I didn’t need it.

Nobody wants to ruin a perfect run with a herd member’s passing, but it’s doubly heartbreaking when you factor in how personable and cute these creatures are. Each has a unique design, with different horn shapes, sizes, and ages, expressed through their quizzical and expressive wide red eyes.

Some even have personality traits that play out as you rest in camp between levels. Needy Calicorns will follow you around camp until they receive affection, while playful ones will try to engage you in a game of fetch. It’s incredibly charming and raises the stakes in the game overall.

Image 1 of 4

(Image credit: Okomotive)(Image credit: Okomotive)(Image credit: Okomotive)(Image credit: Okomotive)

As the game progresses, the world expands to include more mysticism. Ancient monuments and grand structures become the backdrop for your quest, and the farther you climb, the more enchanting the world becomes; and the farther you feel from the vaguely post-apocalyptic vibes in the earlier game levels as your protagonist becomes increasingly enmeshed with their herd.

There are environmental threats at different levels, including spiky surfaces and even ice calving beneath your Calicorn’s feet (or hooves? You can’t really see them…), but the real fear factor comes from the cryptid-esque giant owls that seem to have a real taste for Calicorn.

These are the primary antagonists in Herdling, but their menace takes various forms. From high-stakes stealth navigation through the birds’ nest to high-speed chases as they snipe at you from the air, these great beasts pose a genuinely terrifying threat to your herd.

You can really appreciate the calmer moments in the game in contrast to the terror, though. The great, sprawling landscapes are gorgeous, and the soft-touch sound design wonderfully captures the emotion of every moment. Activating stampede mode launches a tremendous Galop-esque burst of sound and color, where more peaceful moments feature little more than the sounds of nature and the sprinkling of keys.

Of course, as Herdling is an indie title, it does lack polish in areas; animations are occasionally a bit awkward, especially as Calicorns descend slopes, and tight or enclosed spaces can be challenging to navigate. That’s especially true as your herd grows, which may well be by design, but if you’re playing using a controller like I did on my Switch 2, you might find yourself in peril (or just fiddling with herd positioning) more often than you’d like, which can impact the pace of the game.

Still, I really enjoyed my time as a Calicorn shepherd. The game hints at themes of homeship, nature, found family, death, and rebirth, giving the player ample perspectives through which to enjoy its wordless narrative. Herdling cleverly implements its key herding mechanic but offers enough ways to play and explore that players of all ages and skillsets can enjoy this minimalist yet profound odyssey to find a new home.

Should I play Herdling?

Play it if…

Don’t play it if…

Accessibility features

Herdling has a handful of dedicated accessibility settings. You can toggle controller vibration, sprint, auto-run, display HUD, herding direction indicator, Calicorn immortality, and button holds. There are no dialogue lines, but there are various language settings for the menus and tutorial.

How I reviewed Herdling

I played through Herdling twice (10 hours) on Nintendo Switch 2 using both the Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2, and handheld mode.

During my time with the game, I compared my experience with other indie titles, especially those launched on Switch 2, making certain to note any issues with performance or game quality.

Puzzle & Dragons studio claims former executive embezzled $2.35 million of company funds

by admin August 18, 2025

GungHo Online Entertainment, the studio behind Puzzles & Dragons, has claimed that a former senior executive embezzled ¥346 million ($2.35 million) by creating fake work and outsourcing orders to misappropriate company funds.

In a statement released on August 14, 2025 (via Automaton), GungHo Online Entertainment alleged that a former senior executive, who was dismissed for disciplinary reasons, had “engaged in misconduct” over the last few years, including the “misappropriation of company funds through the place of fictitious work orders” (via Google Translate).

“The company became aware of the suspicion of fraudulent activity by the former employee and conducted an initial investigation with the support of forensic teams from external law and accounting firms to determine whether the former employee had engaged in fraudulent activity and to clarify the facts of the matter,” GungHo Online Entertainment wrote in the statement.

GungHo Online Entertainment goes on to allege that, as a result of this initial investigation, it “confirmed” the former employee had embezzled approximately ¥246 million ($1.67 million) of company funds by using a third-party job-ordering service to create “fictitious work orders” which named the company as the client and the former employee as the contractor.

In addition, GungHo Online Entertainment alleges that it “confirmed” the former executive had “fraudulently paid outsourcing fees to a business partner despite the fact that no work had actually been performed,” resulting in a further loss of ¥100 million ($680,000).

In response, the company formed an internal investigation team, led by two independent, external auditors and supported by forensic teams from external law and accounting firms.

The investigation has been conducting interviews with those involved and aimed to provide a “detailed investigation into the facts of the fraudulent conduct in question through digital forensics of the devices used by the former employee.”

The team has also been investigating whether there were any similar cases, “analyzing the causes, and formulating measures to prevent recurrence.”

As a result of this alleged misconduct, the employee in question was dismissed on July 24, 2025.

GungHo Online Entertainment claimed in its statement that the alleged fraud was “maliciously and independently committed by the former employee, who was a senior executive with discretion and authority.” The company also claimed the former employee “engaged in cover-up efforts to avoid detection.”

In the statement, GungHo Online Entertainment revealed that it “has been consulting with investigative authorities and holding discussions regarding filing criminal charges.”

“The company is currently in concrete discussions regarding the acceptance of charges against the former employee and is fully cooperating with the investigative activities of the investigative authorities,” the statement reads.

“Therefore, in consideration of the potential hindrance to the investigative activities, the company will refrain from disclosing the details of this misconduct.”

GungHo Online Entertainment apologised for the “inconvenience and concern” the alleged incident may have caused to relevant parties, but said the impact on the company’s financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, is expected to be “minor.”

GungHo Online Entertainment is currently facing a shareholder revolt, with the company due to hold an extraordinary general meeting on September 24, 2025, where shareholders will vote on whether to oust its current CEO and president, Kazuki Morishita.
