Capcom sparks backlash after putting Street Fighter 6 finals behind paywall

Capcom has announced that the 2025 Capcom Cup 12 Finals and the Street Fighter League 2025 World Championship will be streamed globally via pay-per-view, marking a significant shift from past years when the same fixtures were freely viewable.

Starting March 14, 2026, Street Fighter fans will need to purchase virtual tickets to watch the live finals. The developer confirmed the change in a September 28 X/Twitter post, specifying that free replays of matches are intended to drop one week later.

Depending on the ticket tier, prices for the pay-per-view stream range from ¥4,000 and ¥6,000 (approximately $27–$40 USD).

Fans push back against paywall

Unsurprisingly, the shift from free to pay-per-view triggered backlash from fans. The announcement on social media was met with an overwhelmingly negative reception.

It’s worth noting that Capcom already adopted the same pay-per-view model in Japan in 2024, so introducing the same model overseas isn’t as spontaneous as it may initially seem.

However, several users suggested that Capcom, as a Japanese company, hasn’t taken into account cultural differences between the two markets. “Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not have Japan’s culture. This will be the biggest PR nightmare for your brand,” one user said.

Fighting game content creators have been similarly outspoken. YouTuber Maximillian Dood released a video on September 30 titled “Capcom…what are you doing?!”

While backlash towards the company as a whole will be inevitable, Max said that the decision had “Nothing to do with the Street Fighter development team, although they’re probably going to be getting an earful over all of this stuff after the weekend is over.”

Assuming concerns don’t result in any changes to the pay-per-view model, it remains to be seen how they’ll affect viewership for future events.

NBA 2K26 Review – Putting It Together

A great athlete can sometimes find themselves maligned for off-the-court issues; no matter the incredible numbers they put up night after night, teams can hesitate to bring them on due to these peripheral problems. Lately, I’ve felt similarly about the NBA 2K franchise, with its intrusive microtransactions distracting from its stellar gameplay. With NBA 2K26, those off-court problems aren’t gone, but they’re less disruptive, resulting in a much better experience that allows the series’ longstanding and abundant strengths to shine.

As with any NBA 2K entry, you can step onto the court with confidence; the play is as good as sports gaming gets. Whether you’re passing around the perimeter, driving through the paint, or staying with your assignment on defense, player movement and collision physics feel better than ever before. The tweaked shot meter requires you to carefully select your shot and skillfully time your release, creating a rewarding experience with every possession. When combined with unrivaled attention to detail with regard to lighting, commentary, and visual fidelity, NBA 2K26 looks and plays better than any other sports game.

All these mechanics and improvements permeate 2K26’s robust suite of modes, which include one-off NBA or WNBA play, long-term franchise modes, and single-player career modes. With both the men’s and women’s games included, you can approach these however you like, but I was pleased to see full WNBA integration into the card-collection mode, MyTeam. 

Although modes like MyTeam are typically not a destination for me due to their reliance on microtransactions, I fully immersed myself in the thrill of building a stacked, cross-leagues team of legends of yesteryear and current stars. The loop of playing games, opening card packs, and optimizing my roster sunk its hooks in me, but the busy and confusing interface does little to compel me to stay in the mode.

 

Card-collection modes like MyTeam are tailor-made for microtransactions, so I don’t mind when sports games quarantine them there. However, NBA 2K fans have been conditioned to accept them in the player-focused MyCareer mode, where you need to spend Virtual Currency (VC) to not only upgrade your player, but also their clothes, gear, and shoes. The persistent pop-ups have been toned down, and the grind to earn VC in-game has been slightly eased compared to past games, meaning that while currency woes persist, they’re less intrusive.  

Despite its redesign, The City remains an incoherent mess of other players running, skating, and go-karting around, dressed in the most cognitively dissonant ways possible. It’s particularly irksome since I love the notion of going shopping for shoes or meeting with my agent to talk endorsement deals, but when the route to get there is full of other players in dinosaur costumes and hazmat suits, it annihilates any sense of immersion.

Starting with the story-based prologue, Out of Bounds, I took my character from high school phenom to NBA rookie over the course of a few hours. The story offers you choices, like what teams you want to join or what goals you want to set, but when it comes to seemingly the most significant choice – going to college or playing in Europe as your path to the NBA – the narrative forces your hand. I would have loved to have a true diverging path rather than the mildly impactful decisions the story presents.

Once you’re through the prologue and into the NBA, the story content continues as the mode progresses around goals you set. For instance, I set my first goal as winning the in-season NBA Cup tournament, but you can also choose goals like being named to the All-Star team, hitting certain stat milestones, or other team-based objectives. I love the ability to chart your own course through the league and watching the story react. Navigating through pro hoops is always going to be my destination with MyCareer, but when I wanted a break from the NBA grind, I found plenty to do out in The City. 

Though you can challenge the competition online in a variety of 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 modes, I was most drawn to the Street Kings sub-mode. Challenging different bosses and their teams in three-on-three first-to-21 games, then recruiting their best players to join your squad immediately piqued my interest; you can even upgrade the teammates by challenging more difficult versions of them after your first victory. Since you need to defeat 10 bosses to challenge the court’s final boss, I had a stacked team of my strongest adversaries heading into the final opponent on one of the two street courts. Then, you can take those teammates into the Hardwood Hall to compete in a massive tournament with modified scoring. 

 

Street Kings is also a great place to earn VC that can be used to either buy gear or level up your character, which alleviates the grind to an extent. But even if it’s not as annoying as past entries, the game still lets you know you could just instantly be a great player if you pull out your credit card. Combine that with a shared pool of VC across modes, and the multi-purpose currency almost forces you to pick a lane and stay with it; I would have loved to buy some packs in MyTeam or get my favorite shoes in MyCareer, but I’d much rather improve my player’s three-point attribute.

The W offers a similar experience, but it’s far more streamlined and lacks much of the pageantry of the men’s side. Rather than a fleshed-out backstory, you basically choose whether you want to be a young gun or an established star from Europe, then experience many of the narrative beats through dry press conferences. I’m glad the WNBA has its own version of a single-player career mode, but it’s clearly an afterthought to its NBA counterpart.

On the more traditional side, I’ve always loved NBA 2K’s franchise modes. I’m particularly impressed by MyNBA, which lets you establish your dream scenarios; do I want to play in the ‘80s, ‘90s, or ‘00s with fairly accurate rosters, draft classes, and historical rule changes – not to mention era-specific filters – or do I want to try and lead my favorite team to the championship in the modern era? The attention to detail is so precise that even minor inaccuracies, like a fan holding a sign that references the Wizards at a Washington Bullets game, felt glaring. Still, that’s a tiny nitpick in the grand scheme of such an impressive offering.

Though its upgrades in this year’s entry are minimal, MyNBA offers so many options and lets you decide the level at which you want to engage with the mode. On one save file, I took control of Jordan’s Bulls as I tried to recreate the magic of Chicago in the ‘90s; I played every game, kept my finger on the pulse of the free agent market, and did everything in my power to nab the best rookies in the draft. On my other save file, I played as the 2026 Timberwolves. I didn’t play very many games, but I wheeled and dealed throughout the regular season and finally brought an NBA championship to Minnesota.

The absolute glut of content is impressive and intimidating all at once, and NBA 2K26’s on-the-court performance is so good that it’s worth the annoyances that come with the franchise. Whether you want to chart your custom character’s career through the NBA or WNBA, take the reins and rewrite your favorite franchise’s history, or build your dream roster of players from across eras, NBA 2K26 gives you all the tools to do so.

It’s not a good time for Bungie. This year’s Destiny 2 expansion, The Edge of Fate, is widely regarded as one of the worst expansions the game has ever seen – a big feat to achieve when you’re 11 years old. As intriguing as some of the new story developments in the expanding world of Destiny are, little could soften the impact of some atrocious decision-making from the sandbox and gear teams within the studio: the grind in Destiny has rarely been worse, and fans’ patience for the MMOFPS is becoming increasingly thin.

Even the blowout reveal of what should have been a slam dunk for Bungie – a Star Wars collab that was initially announced back in May – has been met with apathy and disinterest. Renegades (to give the event its proper name) will be the first ever crossover-themed campaign in Destiny’s complicated history, and operates in a muddy middle ground between full crossover and vague skin-based collab.

“Renegades merges Destiny’s distinctive storytelling and gameplay with themes and elements drawn from the iconic sci-fi franchise,” Bungie enthuses in its own press release. In the expansion, we “will defy the Vanguard” to pursue Drifter across Sol, navigating a world of shadows and syndicates in the new social hub, Tharsis Outpost, as we work across story missions to build a crew and resist a rising faction tied to the Nine.

As you can see from the video above, Renegades positions an activity called the Lawless Frontier front and center: per Bungie, it’s “a chaotic, cooperative new game mode, where players take on a variety of high-risk jobs and contracts to earn reputation, unlock all-new Renegade abilities that change the tide of battle, and wield weapons that include the iconic Praxic Blade and an energy-based arsenal from the new Blaster archetype.” A new dungeon is also promised to land after the expansion’s launch on 2nd December.

But, frankly, who cares? This should have been a home run for Bungie – a big crossover like this is often catnip for MMO ride-or-dies – but the general consensus amongst the community at the moment is one of exhausted apathy. After the presentation that debuted information on both Renegades and the other incoming expansion, Ash & Iron, the top post on Destiny’s dedicated Subreddit reads: I think tonight this is a breakpoint for many people and Bungie as a whole. Another bemoans “Almost everything in this “Major Update” is reskinned/reissued, except [the paid shop]”, and every single top post in the dedicated megathread about Renegades is critical of Bungie.

Now, I’ve been a member of /r/DestinyTheGame for about 12 years, and even since the early days (alpha and beta for D1!), the sub has had toxicity issues. Go figure. But this is something else: I don’t think I’ve ever seen the community so fed up and bored with basically everything that is suggested.

The problem is three-fold: as well as Bungie losing key staff that have overseen the Destiny vision since inception, the remaining designers have also implemented sandbox aspects players actively hate – namely, The Portal, a high-grind, low-reward anomaly of game design that actively punishes you for wanting choice in the things you do and the gear you equip. Decisions like these seem to manifest because of a studio culture that “stem from a lack of player empathy, disconnected leadership, and a corporate-first culture,” per one recent report.

At this point, it feels like Bungie’s back is against a wall: player numbers are dropping, player satisfaction is low, and even massive crossover events like Star Wars are failing to stem the haemorrhaging. As a big new update lands, concurrent player counts on Steam are even struggling to reach 50k – a historic low for the game. Will this trend reverse by December, when the Star Wars update actually launches? We’ll have to wait and see but right now, it doesn’t seem likely.

Blizzard filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against one of World of Warcraft’s biggest private servers, but the team behind it is putting on a brave face: ‘Challenges come to us often, and each time we are prepared to face them’

If you’ve played an MMO for very long, you’ve almost certainly heard the siren song of the private server. These fan-operated servers come in all varieties—some keep dead games alive, some provide a window to a past build of an aging game, and some have even gotten the green light to keep going from the game’s publisher.

Historically, Blizzard has not been so keen on this practice which, in all fairness, involves making big parts of its game playable for free. Its action against Nostalrius, a server that took World of Warcraft back to a 2006 build before that option existed officially, is one of the more notorious private server closures in history.

There’s nothing new under the sun, as Turtle WoW—a private server that launched in 2018 and has reached concurrent player peaks of over 70,000 since, according to its developers—was named in a complaint Blizzard filed Friday that claims the Turtle WoW team has “built an entire business on large scale, egregious, and ongoing infringement of Blizzard’s intellectual property.”

The Turtle WoW build is an altered version of 2006-era WoW offering new playable races, zones, instances, and so on. While it is free to play, it also has an in-game shop that allows donations to the dev team to be converted into store currency. But the more pressing issue is obviously the whole copyright infringement thing, which the lawsuit hammers home hard.

The complaint continues: “These unauthorized private servers drive away otherwise dedicated WoW players, introduce security risks to players, fragment the WoW player community, and create confusion as to what are official, supported

versions of WoW … private servers such as Turtle WoW also encourage and facilitate video game piracy by allowing players to avoid paying for the game experience that Blizzard has invested so much time and money to create.”

Turtle WoW wasn’t exactly in hiding. You may have seen its advertisements on YouTube or on X, where it regularly teases major updates and its impending move to Unreal Engine 5. The team recently launched a new realm, Ambershire, which itself hit an early peak of over 11,000 online players. These are the sort of numbers and ambitions that some officially active MMOs can’t match.

On the server’s fan Discord, team member Torta issued a statement the day after the suit was filed: “Turtle WoW is here to stay. Challenges come to us often, and each time we are prepared to face them. We remain fully committed to delivering the Turtle WoW experience that you’ve come to love over the years.”

As a lifelong fan of “vanilla” World of Warcraft who watched Turtle WoW’s development with great interest, it hurts to see so much passionate work and modding ingenuity get tangled in a legal mess. On the other hand, Blizzard has already proven itself litigious with this sort of thing, and it’s hard to say how the team will keep it going. Private servers have a way of persevering for exactly as long as they can evade the wrong attention.

Philippine Senator Suggests Putting National Budget On-chain

Philippine Senator Bam Aquino wants the country’s national budget placed on a blockchain platform, a move he said would make every peso spent traceable by citizens.

“No one is crazy enough to put their transactions on blockchain, where every single step of the way will be logged and transparent to every single citizen. But we want to start,” Aquino said in a statement at the Manila Tech Summit held on Wednesday.



“If we’re able to do this, I think we’ll be the first country to have our budget on the blockchain,” Aquino said, adding he’s unsure what kind of support he’d receive.

At the time of writing, no formal proposal on a blockchain-powered budget management system scaled for the country’s entire national budget has been filed. Representatives for Senator Aquino did not immediately return Decrypt’s request for comment.

But once formalized, Senator Aquino’s plan would build upon the Department of Budget and Management’s existing blockchain platform, which already records select financial documents and is the first live on-chain budget platform in Asia.

BayaniChain, the local blockchain infrastructure firm behind the DBM’s on-chain platform, welcomed Aquino’s remarks but clarified it is not directly involved with the senator.

“His vision aligns with ours: creating more transparent and accountable systems for the Philippines,” Paul Soliman, co-founder and CEO of BayaniChain, told Decrypt. “While blockchain is not a silver bullet against corruption, it creates immutable records that ensure accountability from government officials.”

Soliman said BayaniChain’s role is to provide the technology that links the Department of Budget and Management’s internal system to a public blockchain.

This setup allows key budget documents, such as Special Allotment Release Orders (SAROs) and Notices of Cash Allocation (NCAs), to be published and verified online, with the records secured on-chain.

Prismo, an orchestration layer, manages data handling, encryption, and validation. The DBM’s budget platform uses Polygon’s Proof-of-Stake network, an Ethereum scaling solution fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, as its consensus and transparency layer.

Starship Nails 10th Test Flight, Putting SpaceX Back on Track

Following a string of unsuccessful flights, SpaceX managed to pull off its most successful test in months, with Starship fulfilling a number of key milestones.

It was a good day for SpaceX. The megarocket blasted off on time, leaving the Starbase launch mount at 7:30 p.m. ET. Stage separation went off without a hitch, with the Super Heavy booster landing in the ocean as planned nearly 7 minutes into the mission. Second engine cutoff (SECO) occurred a few minutes later, and Starship began to cruise in space, this time without the awful tumbling experienced in the most recent mission.

History was made at the 18:30 mark, when Starship opened its bay doors and ejected payloads into space for the first time.

In this case, the payloads were mock-ups of next-gen Starlink satellites. Acting like a Pez dispenser, Starship popped each dummy satellite into space one at a time and in roughly one-minute intervals (the units will fall back to Earth and burn up in the atmosphere). It marked a huge moment for SpaceX, with Starship finally functioning as a delivery vehicle.

About 38 minutes into the flight, Starship re-lit one of its vacuum-optimized Raptor engines—the second time SpaceX has ever pulled off the maneuver.

Reentry of Starship began at roughly the 45-minute mark, with the spacecraft hurtling towards the Indian Ocean. SpaceX ran a stress test on the vehicle, deliberately compromising its heat shield to be “mean to the spaceship” and putting it “through its paces,” as SpaceX’s Dan Huot said during the broadcast. The fins in particular were pushed to the limit, with one of them showing clear signs of scarring.

The Starship upper stage returned to Earth at 8:37 p.m. ET, ending the 67-minute mission. Despite the abuse, Starship executed its last-moment flip, performing a landing burn and splashing down softly into the Indian Ocean before exploding in a fireball. Incredibly, a camera mounted on a nearby buoy managed to catch the action.

This was the flight that SpaceX desperately needed. We’ll learn more about the test in the coming days and weeks, but the modifications made to the oversized launch system appeared to do the trick. But as we’ve learned, a single successful test is no guarantee of future gain. SpaceX still has a long way to go before this incredible launch system is fully operational.
