Over 4 Years Later, PS5 Has More Monthly Users Than PS4

by admin June 16, 2025

For the first time, more people are using a PS5 console than a PS4, according to Sony. In a new look at the business of PlayStation, Sony noted that PS5 had more monthly active users when compared to PS4, with the combined playerbase now at 124 million users, as of March 31.

Sony said that it had 49 million monthly users each on PS5 and PS4, as of April 30, 2024. While it hasn’t provided exact figures on just how many people are now on PS5 compared to PS4, the accompanying slide does suggest that there has been a significant change here. Spending has also increased, with Sony noting that people were spending more on peripherals, services, and content.

Sony’s graph slide showing the MAU split between PS5 and PS4.

It took over four years for the PS5 to surpass the PS4 in this category, but there are several reasons for this. The PS5 suffered from stock shortages when it first launched, and most games were available on both PlayStation platforms. This included several big sports titles and other AAA releases, which are generally considered to be some of the big drivers behind adopting new console hardware.

As the current console generation has continued, more games launching only for current-gen hardware and console exclusives, alongside various entry points for the PS5, have helped make it a more appealing purchase.

Looking ahead, Sony also commented on its next-gen gaming console during its business presentation. The company isn’t prepared to shift entirely to cloud gaming yet, as it says the majority of its users prefer “local execution” of games. Sony also commented on its live-service plans, saying that the company is feeling optimistic about Bungie’s Marathon ahead of its September launch, and that it doesn’t predict it to be another Concord.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Getting Physical PS5 And Switch Releases

by admin June 14, 2025

While Ninja Gaiden 4 might be the most anticipated ninja title of 2025, we’re also getting a retro-inspired side-scroller Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound a few month earlier on PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC on July 31. The initial launch will be for the digital version of the game on all platforms. However, Nintendo Switch and PS5 are also getting physical editions packed with cool collectibles launching on September 12–including Special Edition that comes with a cloth map, double-sided medallion, pins, and more. Preorders for the physical Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound editions are available now. Copies are currently exclusive to the game’s publisher, Silver Lining Direct, but other retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target are expected to carry the game soon.

$40

The standard edition of Ragebound gets you a copy of the game, a digital copy of the official soundtrack, and a retro booklet. That’s a pretty nice bundle for just $40. It’s available on PS5 and Switch.

$70

Spring for the Special Edition, and you’ll get a bunch of collectibles. Along with everything from the standard edition, it includes the following:

  • Cloth map
  • 4 metal pins
  • Double-sided hero medallion
  • Pixel stage standee
  • Double-sided poster
  • Premium collector’s box

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Special Edition

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a 2D sidescroller that takes place while Ryu Hayabusa is traveling to America. However, a demonic army invades Hayabusa Village while he’s gone–and it’ll be up to the young Kenji Mozu, this apprentice, to fend them off. But do to that, he’ll need help from the infamous Black Spider Clan.

Ragebound will feature dual protagonists (Kenji Mozu and Kumori), and you’ll need to master both their skills to survive. The game is looking to combine modern gameplay mechanics with old-school visuals, and it’s shaping up to be a unique addition to the iconic Ninja Gaiden franchise. If you can’t wait to play until September 12, the digital version launches on July 31.

Be sure to also check out Ninja Gaiden 4 preorders, as there’s a nice bonus for reserving a copy in advance. Three different versions are up for grabs, including a Deluxe Edition that gets you heaps of in-game gear to kickstart your adventure.

Same-date PC ports of PS5 games remain unlikely, as Sony talk up “thoughtful” multiplatform approach despite Xbox comparisons

by admin June 13, 2025

PlayStation’s bigwigs are content to stick with their current approach to multiplatform releases for now, making it unlikely we’re going to see a sudden switch to day-and-date PC ports of Sony’s big single-player games anytime soon.

SlayPtation have been bringing their studios’ multiplayer and live-service games to PC at release for a while now, it making sense with the likes of Helldivers 2 and, er, Concord, to try and ensure the maximum potential player base possible right out of the gate. On the other hand, for single player stuff like God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima they’ve been content to wait a year to bring over to the other video game boxes.

Based on what PlayStation’s studio business group boss Hermen Hulst said at a Sony corporate meeting today, the console makers are happy to zig where their rivals at Xbox are zagging, and keep big single-player exclusives as exclusives for that year, in order to try and keep player stock in the PS5 as high as possible.

“Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles, they’re such a differentiator,” the exec re-iterated (thanks, VGC), “The point of differentiation, I should say, for the PlayStation console, is that they will showcase the performance and the quality of the hardware. So we want to ensure that players get the best experience from these titles. We’re very thoughtful about how and if and how we bring these titles to other platforms.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino toed the same line, emphasising when asked about Xbox’s approach that PlayStation will stay alert and listen to players to “ensure that we serve them appropriately”, which is the most corporate guy combo of words I’ve read this week.

The bit about listening to players is interesting given the negative reputation PlayStation’s earned itself with the communities of games like Helldivers 2 due to its handling of mandatory PSN account linking and its effect on PC gamers in regions where PSN doesn’t operate.

But, you can see the logic in keeping on keeping on for the console makers, even if it means time twiddling thumbs for us folks with our big computers.

If You Own a PS5, the PlayStation DualSense Controller Costs Peanuts on Amazon

by admin June 11, 2025

If you own a PS5, having multiple controllers is almost a necessity as there’s nothing better than sharing your favorite PlayStation games with friends or family in the same room. While it’s always wise to have a spare controller ready for multiplayer sessions or simply as a backup for you, genuine discounts on the PlayStation DualSense wireless controller are rare.

Even during Black Friday, major promotions were hard to find which makes this moment the perfect opportunity to add another controller to your setup. Right now, the PlayStation DualSense controller is available on Amazon for just $54 which is a substantial 27% off its usual $74 price. This limited-time deal marks an all-time low, so it’s an ideal time to buy, especially if you missed out on previous sales.

See at Amazon

Why We Love It

The biggest feature of the DualSense controler is haptic feedback which puts the feel of in-game action and environments right in your hands. Whether you’re racing down rough roads, wielding guns or feeling the crash of a collision, the controller’s next-gen vibration motors plunge you further into the game.

Aside from the haptic feedback, adaptive triggers provide varying levels of force and tension so that you can feel the distinction between drawing back a bowstring or slamming on the brakes in a racing title. They work together to create a feeling of realism and immersion that was not achievable on previous PlayStation controllers.

The built-in microphone allows you to chat online without a headset and the 3.5mm audio jack allows you to plug in your favorite headphones for individual use. The create button is convenient to use to capture and stream your most excellent gaming moments in case you’re playing with buddies or capturing highlights to playback later. The controller’s iconic appearance has been fine-tuned for comfort with enhanced sticks and an intuitive layout that feels great in your hand even after long gaming sessions.

DualSense isn’t only for PlayStation 5 gamers: With its USB Type-C and Bluetooth connectivity, you can easily play it on Windows desktops and Macs too which gives you even more gaming possibilities outside of the console. Most high-end PC games currently support advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which lets you experience the same immersive experience playing from your computer.

With over 33,000 reviews and a lovely 4.6 out of 5-star rating, the PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller is a proven winner among gamers. Don’t hesitate too much: These sales don’t come around often, and the stock may not be here.

Gears of War: Reloaded is not releasing on PS5 in Japan, but Xbox or PC releases will go ahead

by admin June 11, 2025

Despite passing certification on Xbox Series and PC, Gears of War: Reloaded will not release on PS5 in Japan.

According to IGN, the game – scheduled to release on August 26 – will not be available on PS5 due to “regional rating restrictions” and “platform policies.”

“Due to regional rating restrictions and platform policies, Gears of War: Reloaded will not be released for PlayStation 5 in Japan,” Microsoft wrote in a machine-translated statement.

“Domestic players will still be able to play the game on launch day through Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Game Pass, and Steam. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused to players in Japan who have been waiting for the release of this game.”

It’s thought, but not confirmed, that Gears of War: Reloaded was denied release on PS5 due to the ability to slice up enemies, as Japan’s rating board, CERO, has previously taken issue with mutilation, banning both The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space remake on consoles for that reason.

Interestingly, Gears of War: Reloaded on the Microsoft Store also doesn’t sport a CERO rating, either, but it does say it’s been classified by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) instead. It’s not known if the remake failed to secure a CERO certificate first.

Black Myth: Wukong Hits Xbox Series X/S This August, Exactly One Year After PS5 Release

by admin June 6, 2025

Developer and publisher Game Science has announced that its action-RPG based on Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong, will finally come to Xbox later this year. More specifically, it will launch on Xbox Series X/S on August 20, curiously exactly one year after the PlayStation 5 release of the game. This is curious because last year, Game Science denied a year-long exclusivity deal when fans questioned why Wukong was skipping Xbox on its initial release.

Nonetheless, Wukong will finally hit Xbox this summer. According to Game Science, preorders for it open on June 18, 2025, the same day the game is getting its first-ever discount. The discount will be 20%, bringing the Standard Edition to $47.99 and the Deluxe Edition to $55.99 here in the U.S.

Wukong hit PS5 and PC on August 20 of last year, and in December, it received its first free DLC, which added a new combat challenge to the game. Wukong surpassed 10 million copies sold in just three days, and set a record for the highest concurrent player peak for a single-player game on Steam at the time.

For more about the game, head to Game Informer’s Black Myth: Wukong hub.

Are you picking up Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox this August? Let us know in the comments below!

Nioh 3 officially revealed – and it’s not a PlayStation exclusive, even if there’s a demo you can only play on PS5

by admin June 5, 2025

As part of the PlayStation State of Play, we got treated to the surprise reveal of the next game in the Nioh action RPG series. It’s simply titled Nioh 3, and it’s going to be changing so much of what we know about Nioh.

Nioh 2 is set for release in early 2026.

First, the game is not a timed PlayStation-exclusive, which is great to see (and a first for Nioh). It will be available on PC and PS5 simultaneously when it arrives next year. The even more surprising news is that there’s a demo available right now, though sadly only on PS5.

This is the alpha demo, which implies there’s going to be at least one more demo – beta – prior to launch, if Team Ninja’s history with Nioh is anything to go by. The demo is available only until Wednesday, June 18

Nioh 3 takes place in Japan’s Sengoku period, and stars a new protagonist; a young warrior (Tokugawa) set to be the next Shogun. Obviously Yokai are in the mix here right alongside human enemies.

Nioh 3 is described as an “open field” game, which is a major change for the series. It’s interesting that Team Ninja didn’t call it outright open world, though perhaps the negative criticisms Rise of the Ronin drew for its open-world structure may have had a hand in that.

Regardless, gameplay areas look to be more open than past Nioh games, even if the trailer doesn’t show much of that.

Watch on YouTube

Perhaps the most interesting detail was made in this PlayStation Blog post, where Nioh 3 general producer Fumihiko Yasuda revealed that combat has two main styles: Samurai, and Ninja.

Both styles can be switched between on the fly. The Samurai style is described as the most similar to other Nioh games, though stances weren’t mentioned in the breakdown. The Samurai style also comes with new additions, so it’s not entirely similar. The post mentions Arts Proficiency, which boosts the power of martial arts – an area that’s typically been neglected in Nioh games. There’s also Deflect, which is effectively a parry system.

Then there’s the Ninja style, which has faster movements, and unlocks a host of aerial actions. This is where the Ninjitsu techniques now sit, and some of the abilities discussed include leaving behind a clone after attacking.

Nioh 3 looks to be a big step forward for the series, so we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on it to find out whether Team Ninja has been successful at evolving its formula this time around.

Everything Revealed During Sony’s PS5 State Of Play 2025

by admin June 5, 2025

Today, Sony held its latest State of Play and while it didn’t include some of the bigger games that people were likely hoping for, like a new God of War spin-off, it did include some cool surprises, including what might be the best-looking fighting game I’ve seen in years and a remake of a beloved Final Fantasy title.

Tears Of The Kingdom’s Newspaper Questline And The State Of Hyrulean Journalism

Here’s the full State of Play if you want to watch it all:

Lumines Arise

This fun announcement kicked off the 45-minute show. It’s from the devs behind Tetris Effect, and it looks (and sounds) awesome. This one is coming to PS5 and PSVR2 in Fall 2025.

Pragmata delayed again

Capcom had a new gameplay trailer for its long-awaited space-adventure-action-horror game featuring a young robot girl and a cool astronaut dude fighting robots. The game was set to come out in 2022, got delayed until 2023, and then got delayed again. Now it’s set to arrive in 2026.

Romeo Is a Deadman looks wild

Zombies attack, nearly killing Romeo, but luckily his grandfather shoves a big sci-fi thing into his head and turns him into a sword-wielding half-dead undead killer. Okay, I’m interested. This one is “maybe” arriving in 2026. No shock that Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture are behind this wild-looking game.

Silent Hill F arrives in September

I’m very happy that we’ve entered a new and better era for the Silent Hill franchise after so, so many years of crap and lukewarm slop. This latest entry looks very different than past games, but still seems properly foggy, spooky, and creepy. And that’s all I need in a Silent Hill sequel. Don’t have to wait long for this one as it launches September 25, 2025.

Bloodstained: The Scarlett Engagement is revealed

Surprise! We are getting a new Bloodstained game. What started back in 2015 as a crowdfunded attempt to make a new Castlevania-inspired 2D action game has expanded into a large franchise of its own. And it’s about to get bigger when this new entry arrives sometime in the future on PS5.

Digimon Story Time Stranger

Wow, it’s wild how much better Digimon games look than Pokémon games. This latest time-traveling RPG set in the universe features some slick visuals and a lot of people screaming about the digital world. As someone living in 2025, I’m fine with the digital world being burned to the ground. Time Stranger is out October 3, 2025.

Final Fantasy Tactics is finally getting a remake

You can read more about this in our story here, but suffice it to say that the legendary tactics RPG is, at long last, getting the remake fans have been clamoring for for ages.

And a montage of trailers and release dates:

Sony devoted a few minutes to sharing trailers and a few bits of info on these four games, one of which is launching on PS4. Wild.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection looks amazing

Digital Eclipse, the retro game wizards behind some excellent old-school video game collections, is taking on the Mortal Kombat series in 2025. Legacy Collection will contain a ton of games from the series, including handheld, console, and arcade ports, as well as rollback netcode and documentary content. I’m very excited to see more of this thing.

Sony is making a fight stick

Not much info beyond that. Here’s Sony’s official description of the device:

Join the fray at home or away with the Project Defiant wireless fight stick*. Take the fight to your opponents with the included sling carry case, and enjoy precise in-game response with ultra-low latency wireless and wired play options, along with a durable, ergonomic design that’s built for battle.

New Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater trailer

The Ape Escape mode is back and looks bigger than before. But the big news is at the very end, where Konami is teasing what looks like a multiplayer mode. Is Metal Gear Online returning? I hope so.

Nioh 3 is coming in 2026, a demo is out now

Team Ninja is back with Nioh 3. The game will let players swap between a samurai and a ninja on the fly during combat, and looks slick as heck. This one drops in 2026, but you can check out a demo for it today on PS5.

Thief VR spin-off coming to PSVR2 this year

When I saw this trailer, I thought, “Hey, this looks like a new Thief game.” And I was right. Thief VR Legacy of Shadow arrives in 2025 and is being co-developed by Eidos-Montréal and Vertigo Games.

Tides of Tomorrow looks like a colorful Waterworld game

I love colorful-looking games, so Tides of Tomorrow instantly caught my eye. The mix of online asynchronous gameplay and having to deal with other people’s decisions in a dying and flooded world sounds interesting. Tides of Tomorrow arrives in February 2026.

Astro Bot is getting even more levels!

One of the best PS5 games ever made, Astro Bot, is getting even more free levels later this month. Five new levels will soon be added to Astro Bot. And Sony is bringing back the fan-favorite Astro Bot PS5 controller that sold out instantly last year.

Sea of Remnants is another colorful pirate game

Wait a minute, another colorful and fun-looking ocean-based adventure game? That’s strange. But anyway, this third-person pirate game has a cool style and big bosses to fight. and ship gameplay. And mermaids. It arrives on PS5 in 2026.

Sword of the Sea is coming to PS Plus

The people behind Abzu and Pathless have a new game coming out, and it looks like you’ll be doing a lot of sick sword surfing. This launches on PS Plus on August 19.

More games coming to PS Plus Classic Catalog

  • Deus Ex’s PS2 port – Jun 17
  • Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 – July 15
  • Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 – Later this summer

007 First Light reveals its new Bond

“Bond is a bullet without a target. Let’s give him one.” This new trailer looks exciting as heck, but I’m really bummed by how boring the new Bond himself looks. This is out in 2026. Read more here.

Ghost of Yotei will get its own digital event

Sony is promising a big gamepaly deep dive for Sucker Punch’s upcoming samurai game. Expect to learn more in July.

Arc Systems Works is making a Marvel fighting game

Well, this is a wonderful surprise. Sony, Marvel, and Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Dragon Ball FighterZ) are teaming up to make a 2.5D Marvel Comics tag-team fighting game. And it looks sick as hell. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is coming out in 2026 on PS5 and PC.

Here’s a separate video Sony posted about how the game came about and the work going into it:

After many bet against it, a PS5 State of Play is coming tomorrow with over 40 minutes of game reveals

by admin June 3, 2025

Sony has officially announced that it’s going to be hosting an event in June after all. It’s going to be of the State of Play variety, and it will be airing live tomorrow. Sony has, in recent years, made a habit of announcing those livestreams one or two days before the event’s scheduled date.

This June’s State of Play is no different, and it looks like it won’t be heavy on first-party games.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

Manage cookie settings

This week’s State of Play will be live tomorrow, June 4 at 2pm PT, 5pm ET, 10pm UK. In the announcement blog post, Sony said we can expect “news and updates” on games coming to PS5.

“The show highlights a selection of great games from creators across the globe,” the blog post adds, which really doesn’t tell us much. It is clear, however, that this won’t be a first-party-focused show, though it is curious that Sony elected not to use the terms ‘first’ or ‘third-party’ in the announcement.

In any case, this State of Play is going to a little beefy, clocking in at over 40-minutes-long. As always, you’ll be able to watch it live on PlayStation’s official Twitch, and YouTube channels.

This week is going to be very busy with events and game reveals. Summer Game Fest’s live opening show is scheduled for Friday, June 6, and the first edition of IO Interactive’s IOI Showcase is taking place just a couple of hours later on the same day.

Then, on Sunday, June 8, Xbox will take its turn to host its own showcase, which will be followed by a dedicated The Outer Worlds 2 direct, so it’s all popping off. EA and Ubisoft are seemingly going to sit this one out, but we wouldn’t bet against some of their rumoured and in-development games showing up at one (or more) of these shows.

Elden Ring: Nightreign offers no technical progression – and doesn’t properly support PS5 Pro

by admin June 3, 2025

Following its brief network beta in February we now have the final release of Elden Ring Nightreign, giving us a fresh chance to assess the console versions. To cut to the chase, there is both good and bad news for console users. The positive side ultimately comes down to Nightreign’s winning gameplay design because, against all the odds, developer FromSoftware’s multiplayer spin-off works surprisingly well. Barring ongoing issues with network latency during its first week – causing lag on NPC reactions after a strike at points – this is a well crafted, Fortnite-inspired twist on Elden Ring. The combat mechanics are instantly familiar, and there’s plenty of strategic depth as you spend a one hour session levelling up in anticipation of a Night Lord boss. It compels repeat attempts, and crucially, rewards a trio of players to co-ordinate their character builds towards that final point.

On the downside there’s the state of Nightreign’s technology. This is really nothing new to those familiar with FromSoftware’s Elden Ring engine, and how it operates on consoles. Its optimisation on PS5 and Xbox Series machines is still disappointing and, much like the network beta, the game continues to often fall short of a target 60 frames per second while exploring the Limveld map. Added to that, there is no support for PS5 Pro. The PlayStation store page makes no mention of enhancements for Pro hardware even on release, and that bears out in our tests where there are no extra modes or optimisations of any sort. It simply runs the base PS5 code, which, as I’ll get to, does at least yield some benefits in frame-rate and image quality depending on which graphics mode you use. Finally, it’s worth noting that the ray tracing mode – included in the main Elden Ring game to allow RT shadows and ambient occlusion – is still absent in Nightreign all round which is a shame.

In terms of how the consoles compare, FromSoftware sticks to its tried and tested settings from the network beta. PS5, PS5 Pro and Series X each run at a fixed 4K in their quality modes – while the frame-rate mode uses a dynamic setup that drops their resolution to 1440p lowest in order to better hit 60fps. On the other hand, for Series S, 1440p is a fixed target on its quality mode, while the frame-rate mode allows for a 1008p to 1440p range to improve performance. Beyond resolution differences all machines run at identical settings with a few exceptions. Firstly, comparing PS5 and PS5 Pro, the Pro side has a small benefit in image quality. By running the base PS5 code on more powerful hardware, PS5 Pro tends to hit higher numbers along that 1512p to 4K range. On average it’ll trend higher, though this only applies to the frame-rate mode of course, and shadows, textures, and world draw are identical.

Here’s the video breakdown for Elden Ring: Nightreign, tested on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S… with a dash of PS4 for good measure.Watch on YouTube

Secondly, the Xbox Series consoles show a greater divide in visual quality. The 4TF Series S inevitably takes a bigger visual downgrade in comparison to Series X: it runs with lower resolution global shadows, plus a dropped ambient occlusion setting – affecting the shading under grass. Most visible, of course, is that drop to a 1440p target. Honestly the turnout is still more than acceptable for Series S, and using the opening tutorial area to match weather and time of day, you’re getting the full fat Nightreign experience otherwise.

In fact, this is a far better scenario than the last-gen releases. Taking base PS4 as an example – which wasn’t available for testing in the network beta – the overall playability of Nightreign suffers quite a bit by not playing on the latest wave of systems. On PS4 you get significantly dropped shadow quality, and dropped foliage density when compared to PS5. It runs at 900p typically (lower than the 1080p found in the main Elden Ring game), and performance is significantly worse than the base game too. It’s targeting 30fps with uneven frame pacing, though in practise, the range is 20-30fps, with a lot of play typically at the midway point.

Switching to current-gen performance testing today, there is sadly no significant boost since the network beta four months ago. Using base PS5’s quality mode for example – with a fixed 4K resolution value – we still have a 35-50fps range of frame-rate while circling the Roundtable Hold. Actual combat around Limveld tends to be even more taxing, but the hub area gives us a way to perfectly match conditions between the network beta and final build. It’s a broadly identical readout too, though there is one curious exception: parts of this hub area have been altered, opening out new areas in the final game and with extra light points and volumetric fog added in one room. As a result performance in this specific spot drops from 45fps in the network beta down to 39fps in the final build, which is expected given the increase in load.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

Manage cookie settings

Generally speaking though, using the Roundtable Hold, there’s been no provable performance upgrade or downgrade in the interim since the beta. Switching to PS5 Pro, comparing the network test against the final build shows much the same issue, though Pro was always least much closer to the 60fps mark on quality mode.

Ultimately, using the quality mode makes no practical sense on any console. Base PS5 in typical open world play runs at a lower 30-45fps range, with drops into the 20s also possible while dropping from the sky. You won’t even see a flash of 60fps while looking directly upward, to theoretically lower GPU load. Xbox Series X follows the same trend with a matching readout to base PS5 – 30-45fps with potential drops under using quality mode – making it a write-off. Series S meanwhile runs at a much more restrictive 30-40fps range, but essentially hugs the 30fps line for most of a round, again with drops into the 20s. And finally, PS5 Pro fares best with a 40-60fps range, which while an improvement over the rest of the console quartet, is still outside the ideal VRR range to mask drops.

This isn’t good enough, and the fixing at a 4K resolution – as crisp and sharp as it is – just doesn’t justify this performance penalty. With all consoles compared in a matched tutorial run, PS5 Pro comes out best with a 47fps reading, while PS5 and Series X occupy a midway point at 35fps, and Series S trails behind at 32fps.

Without a specific patch to support the hardware, PS5 Pro’s advantage is limited to a boost in performance while using Nightreign’s quality mode – plus a small image quality improvement in the frame-rate mode.

The easier mode to recommend is still the frame-rate mode. Base PS5 runs at between 40-60fps, which still does not easily slot into the ideal VRR range. Long passages of play, especially by the dying embers of a round, veer towards the lower end and visibly lurch to 40fps. Series X has the exact same range, but given that Xbox consoles do have a wider VRR window to work to (40-60Hz, versus the 48-60Hz on PS5 systems), there is some flexibility to adapt. It’s a much smoother, less visibly juddering experience as a result – if your display supports VRR. Even Series S benefits in this sense, with so much of its performance running at between 40-60fps, keeping up pace with the other machines.

Last up is PS5 Pro. To its credit, the Pro hardware produces a 50-60fps range most of the time, which does fit nicely within Sony’s nominated VRR range. The only snag is sharp 40fps lurches while exploring Limveld, which occur in some rounds more frequently than others, and stick out clearly. In relative, matched tests using our Roundtable Hold route, PS5 Pro in theory has the upper hand with a tighter adherence to the 60fps target, while PS5 and Series X hover just below and Series S landing at around 50fps.

Despite having the final release of Nightreign in hand, there’s so much left to be desired on the technical front. The remixing of Limgrave’s locations to forge Limveld creates a perfect playground for its shortened one hour online experience – but performance on current-gen is still lacking. My recommended pick is the frame-rate mode, and ideally on an Xbox Series system where VRR is more flexible to handle a 40-60fps range. PS5 Pro meanwhile gets to the theoretical best frame-rates, purely by running the base PS5 code on a more powerful GPU – but it’s a disappointment and there is no official Pro patch in place.

It sets a worrying precedent for a new release to neglect Pro hardware entirely, and even as an off-shoot to a major game I expected more. I’m hopeful we’ll see FromSoftware come round to the idea, since so many of its games could benefit from Pro support, but Nightreign isn’t that breakthrough moment. The state of affairs with the final release is sadly as we left it in the network test: it’s unquestionably enjoyable – a mad concoction of ideas that somehow ties together. But regardless of console or mode, 60fps performance is all too often out of reach.
