Arc Raiders Wants To Make Progression Wipes Less Unfair

by admin October 9, 2025

In most extraction shooters, as well as a number of online survival games, players are all-too-familiar with the necessary evil known as a global wipe, in which everyone’s inventory and stats get reset to start all players off again on the same footing. It can sting a bit, but it helps balance out the game for newcomers, as folks who’ve been playing for years could otherwise build up a virtually limitless stockpile of goodies to maintain supremacy. Upcoming PvPvE extraction shooter Arc Raiders, however, has some different ideas on how to implement this in a way that won’t cost everyone their precious, hard-won loot.

In particular, the developers are trying to solve one of the biggest problems with mandatory wipes: It’s really unfair to those who only have limited windows of opportunity to play the game. It sucks when you log a few hours in one week, get tied up with life stuff for the remainder of a month, then come back to find out even the meager earnings you scored during that first week are now gone due to the wipe. Arc Raiders developer Embark is aiming to solve that.

In a blog post titled “Expedition Project,” Arc Raiders’ design director Virgil said that the studio “absolutely [sees] the benefits a global wipe provides [but] one thing a mandatory wipe does not do is respect the investment of those players who do not have as much time to play overall.”

Enter “Projects,” a feature that unlocks after level 20 with a scheduled eight-week window to complete, after which you’ll unlock the ability to reset your character. Should you fail to finish your project within the eight-week window, you can hold on to all of the progress you made, including your gear. You can then continue your progress during the next eight-week period that opens up.

Rewards for completing a Project include unique cosmetics and buffs that get activated when the next expedition rolls around. “Completing a reset,” the dev blog states, “should never give a player a power or combat advantage over anyone who has not completed a reset.” That last point is particularly important given that Arc Raiders is embracing PvP which, in an extraction context, can often result in some unfair situations anyway.

Wipes can make for a rough introduction to this genre of game, and in the end sort of ensure that the game only appeals to those who have considerably more time to play them. Hopefully Arc Raiders’ Projects will solve that dilemma.

Borderlands 4 gets a new PC patch to fix crashes, progression blockers and GPU-related problems

by admin September 18, 2025

Gearbox have released another Borderlands 4 update for technical problems on PC, with a particular focus on game stability and crashes, though they’ve also fixed a progression blocker or two in the process. Unlike that other Borderlands 4 patch from earlier this week, this one has an actual changelog. Gosh, wait till Mark hears of this! Oh nuts, he’s already gone on holiday, presumably in sheer consternation over the shortage of bullet points. Look what you did, Randy Pitchford. Look what you did.

“This update improves stability on PC, smooths out progression, and updates the Gilded Glory Pack loot and rewards for a more seamless experience,” reads a note on the game’s official site. “Please restart your game to ensure that the update goes through and to prevent connection errors in matchmaking.”

It follows the publication of our full Borderlands 4 review, in which Jasmine Mannan summarised the new looter-shooter as a good laugh despite the lingering stink over choppy frame rates and other technical gremlins. “With improved movement, devastating Action Skills that can be adjusted to suit your playstyle, and very limited Claptrap appearances, Borderlands 4 is easily the best Borderlands game yet,” she wrote.

As of 16th September, at least, Borderlands 4 had a build that let you melt bosses by, as far as I can tell, replacing all of your enemy’s major arteries with blackholes. I’m quite glad that Borderlands is a stylised, comicbook affair with bouncing damage numerals, because Mark’s breakdown of that exploit is absolutely horrendous. I imagine they’ll be patching that out pronto.

Anyway, here’s the full changelog for the latest Borderlands 4 update. It is… brief, far too brief for bolded subheadings, really, but I added the first two before I noticed how slight it was, and I’m jiggered if I’m going to change course now.

Stability

  • Addressed crashes tied to animation states, audio, and collision checks
  • Addressed various GPU-related crashes

Gameplay & Progression

  • Resolved an issue where the Reward Center could stop working after claiming the Gilded Glory Pack rewards
  • Addressed a progression blocker in the mission “Talk to Zadra,” where the objective could fail if players exited and relaunched mid-dialogue
  • Corrected “Doesn’t own DLC” warnings incorrectly showing up on non-DLC gear
  • This will be fixed on consoles in the coming days.

Loot & Items

  • Updated loot pools so Gilded Glory Pack guns no longer appear in standard chests

‘Wednesday’ Star Evie Templeton on Agnes’ Progression From Stalker to Friend

by admin September 12, 2025

During a chat on the official Wednesday podcast—or rather, woecast—Nevermore newcomer Evie Templeton discussed Agnes coming into her own after being an unhinged stalker fan of Netflix’s favorite Addams.

After Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) lays into her at the end of the second season of the Tim Burton show, seemingly to push her to be herself in the meanest way possible, Agnes gets gutted emotionally in a way that could have been a villain origin but goes in a surprisingly positive direction.

“I think the important message in this episode is that it’s okay to stand out and it’s okay to be yourself and being yourself is the best version of yourself that you can be, it’s okay to stand in your individuality,” she said of the moment Wednesday stopped the pick-me energy dead in its tracks. “I think it’s just a moment of pure devastation. I mean, all of her efforts have really led to nothing and she’s tried so hard and put so much into this that it’s really just a moment of pure heartbreak; to be told by her idol that she’s failed and that she’s not good enough is really heart-wrenching for her.”

She noted, “I think it also acts as quite a pivotal moment because after this she sort of embraces her own individuality and she breaks out of her braids”—meaning the copycat hairstyle that made her look more like Wendy’s mascot than her idol.

Templeton’s hopes for Wednesday’s stalker-turned-crime-solving partner lie in her becoming friends with Enid (Emma Myers) instead of seeing her as competition. “Well, I think they have a lot in common. They both admire Wednesday so much, and I think they can both also recognize that beneath Wednesday’s stern, stony exterior that she has a lot of compassion inside, and she’s a very loyal friend.”

The new friendship gets solidified with their showstopping performance to Lady Gaga’s “The Dead Dance” at the gala.

“I think it’s in the moment where she’s obviously in her beautiful green dress, and she’s got her new hairstyle, that she sort of realizes that [Enid’s] be-your-own-psycho advice has really impacted her in the best way possible, and I think that’s a really important message, especially for my generation, to not feel like you have to conform, and to understand that you can break out of the mold and be yourself, and not to feel pressured into being what everyone else thinks you should be.”

Templeton continued to sing her dance partner’s praises, which is a great place for an Enid and Agnes team-up to start. “Emma is the sweetest girl. She’s so, so nice. I mean, we have a lot in common, which was great. That [Gaga dance sequence] was something that kind of connected us from the beginning.”

She hopes it solidifies Agnes’ place in the friend group as their invisibility-powered partner in mystery solving. “I really want to see that trio dynamic. I’d like to see how that progresses, like the Three Musketeers.”

Wednesday season two is now streaming on Netflix.

Overwatch 2 will overhaul its progression systems to show more visual flair in matches

by admin August 26, 2025

The next season of Overwatch 2 will bring more than the usual new hero and battle pass to the team shooter. Blizzard announced that Season 18 will introduce a new take on the progression system. As they currently stand, the progression numbers feel pretty divorced from the gameplay; this revamp introduces new ways to display your prowess to teammates and foes in matches as well as some welcome changes to how you see and equip your rewards.

The new Progression 2.0 system has overhauled the visual side. For starters, there will be new portrait frames that increase in fanciness every 20 levels, capping at level 60. These Ascended borders will be displayed when you pick your hero for a match. Between the different Ascended frames, players will unlock five tiers of hero badges that also display in Hero Select under your portrait.

In addition to the new flash, the Hero Select screen will show your allies a card with your top heroes on it. I doubt anyone will pay too much attention to cards in the Open Queue matches, so this seems like a Competitive-angled addition. It could help make it easy to build a team composition based on the whole group’s strengths, creating a test of your crew’s cooperation ability before the game even starts. Blizzard clarified that in Competitive, opponents won’t be able to see your portrait borders until 10-15 seconds after a match begins, and hero cards won’t be displayed to an enemy until one of you eliminates each other. That means nobody should be able to use your hero card against you in the ban phase.

I’ve almost never thought about the rewards I get for progression stats because it’s unclear when I’ve gotten a new item and I rarely bother searching for them in my cosmetics collections, so having a dedicated progression menu added should place a new focus on tracking how far you’ve gotten with a particular character. The hero-specific rewards on the horizon will be displayed on that page, and already-unlocked items can be equipped directly from that menu. Blizzard is also offering occasional Epic and Legendary loot box freebies as you rise through the ranks for each hero, which is always welcome.

The progression levels will be rewarded retroactively when the season starts. For long-time fans, that means you can expect to see a whole bunch of rewards to browse through when you first log in during Season 18. For new players, there will be more credits and cosmetics available to unlock in the first 20 levels. That first set of 20 levels will also be scaled to be quicker to complete, while later levels will require more time.

The new season kicks off tomorrow, on August 26. Season 18 will also bring a new option for keyboard and mouse controls on console and the permanent addition of watery support hero Wuyang.
