“Maybe 10 years ago, he was like, ‘I want Marco Rubio to be president,’” the same source says.

Many players first started hearing of Ellison in the lead up to the 2024 Republican presidential primary. At that point, after years of donating to both parties, Ellison was seen internally as doing Trump a small favor by pledging his financial support to senator Tim Scott, a Republican of South Carolina. My sources considered Scott to be a solid VP contender, if a slight longshot. He was seen as harmless at worst, and at best a potential insurance policy in the event of a prolonged primary campaign—a potential spoiler candidate capable of pulling support from rivals, particularly fellow South Carolinian Nikki Haley.

“His involvement with GOP politicians like Tim Scott was the appetizer,” a second Republican familiar with Ellison’s political activities tells me, “and Trump is the main course.”

TikTok, Paramount, AI—Oh My

Ellison, who’s almost two years older than Trump, has been setting the groundwork for the successor to his family empire. The weight of his legacy falls on the shoulders of his 42-year-old son, David.

Once an aspiring actor, David played a key role alongside James Franco in the 2006 WWI drama Flyboys—which he also partially financed. When his on-screen career didn’t take off, he figured he would be better not just behind the camera, but up in the C-suite.

David’s known political donations have been entirely to Democrats. But he is not known for having the same tactical nous as Larry.

“This is the exhausting part of it,” a campaign staffer with knowledge of donor outreach involving the Ellison family tells me, describing David as someone who carried himself with the confidence of a business tycoon despite, at the point they interacted, only having been born to one. “I’ve dealt with a lot of people through my career who are nepo babies. Some of them feel like they’re moguls in their own right.”

This source—who, like others, requested anonymity to speak candidly about the political influence of the Ellison family—said the nepo babies of the ultra wealthy tend to fall into two camps: There are those with pet policy issues and a desire to shape their legacy through some notion of making a difference, and there are those who want to accumulate power and influence for their own sake.

“He was always part of that latter group.”

Representatives for Larry and David Ellison did not return requests for comment.

While my Trumpworld and Republican sources who have dealt with Larry Ellison’s political activities say they take him to be more or less a true believer on most of their key issues at this point—most notably seen in his support for the Israeli military, a focus on improving “blue cities,” and his financial interests in the AI industry—far less is known about his heir apparent.

With a still vaguely described domestic iteration of TikTok and scores of TV channels from news to entertainment coming into the family’s portfolio, it remains to be seen whether David Ellison will become a Murdoch-type figure, setting the agenda for the modern GOP and in control of properties occupying the top spot in the conservative media ecosystem in the way Fox News did for the past three decades.

Last week, Ripple announced a groundbreaking partnership with DBS and Franklin Templeton that would launch trading and lending solutions powered by tokenized money market funds and Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin.

Investors will be able to use RLUSD to trade for Franklin Templeton’s money market fund, sgBENJI, earn yield and open new liquidity venues. 

Now, in the most recent move, Ripple — in partnership with Securitize, a platform for tokenizing real-world assets — announced today a smart contract that would allow holders of BlackRock’s BUIDL and VanEck’s VBILL to exchange their shares to Ripple for Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin. This smart contract adds an additional stablecoin off ramp for BUIDL and VBILL tokenized short term treasury funds.

The recent RLUSD positive developments have attracted reactions from the crypto community.

Jack McDonald, CEO of Standard Custody and SVP of Stablecoins at Ripple, stated: “Ending Q3 on a high note  through Ripple’s partnership with Securitize, RLUSD is now a key stablecoin offramp for BlackRock’s BUIDL and VanEck’s VBILL tokenized fund holders. The integration is starting with ETH, though Securitize is planning to integrate with the XRP Ledger.”

In a recent tweet, CME Group stated it has hit the four-month milestone for XRP futures as demand for trusted, regulated crypto products remains. CME group shared a recap for XRP and micro XRP futures in the last four months: 397,000 contracts traded, $18.3 billion in notional volume ($213 million ADV) and 6 billion XRP equivalent.

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has criticised Microsoft’s recent price hike of Xbox consoles in the US, stating “console price increases are not tariff issues, they are profit issues”.

Last week, Microsoft announced the price increase and blamed “changes in the macroeconomic environment”, though didn’t mention tariffs specifically.

Still, Ybarra – who left his position as corporate vice president of Microsoft’s gaming division in 2019 – responded to the assumption in a post on social media, adding “the reason why profits are not where they should be is a far, far deeper issue vs. the tariff excuse.”

In a later response, Ybarra added the previous price increase in May was justified due to the rise in tariffs at the time, but that’s not the case with this new rise.

“An excuse to continue raising prices, with no new increase in tariffs, is simply a different problem,” he said, “and they are going to make consumers continue to pay for those problems.”

Console price increases are not tariff issues, they are profit issues. And the reason why profits are not where they should be is a far, far deeper issue vs. the tariff excuse.

This price hike only affects consumers in the US, which is why tariffs have been seen by some as the primary reason.

Now, an Xbox Series X costs $649.99 (or $599.99 for the digital version), while a Series S costs $399.99 for the 512MB model and $449.99 for the 1TB model.

Despite the “changes in the macroeconomic environment”, Microsoft reported an 18 percent boost in revenue at its latest earnings call, with Xbox Game Pass making almost $5bn in annual revenue.

Sony also announced a price hike for its PS5 consoles in the US back in August, with the base PS5 costing $549.99, the digital edition costing $499.99, and the PS5 Pro costing $749.99.

Solana DATs on rise

Kristin Smith, the president of Solana Institute, pointed out that the past few weeks have seen multiple Solana DATs launch. These include DeFi Dev Corp and Upexi, which has chosen Solana as its treasury reserve asset.

Nasdaq-listed SOL Strategies joins this list as an institutional bridge to Solana, connecting traditional finance and crypto through institutional-grade validators.

Forward Industries (FORD) is Solana’s first billion-dollar publicly traded treasury. FORD became the largest SOL treasury earlier this week after acquiring 6.82 million SOL, representing 1.26% of the total supply.

This week, Nasdaq-listed Helius in partnership with Pantera Capital and Summer Capital announced over $500 million in funding to launch a SOL treasury company.

According to Smith, this might just be the beginning as innovative vehicles like DATs are emerging, channeling capital to where it is most productive.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has called on the country’s financial sector to accelerate the adoption of cryptocurrency and cash payments, calling them essential tools for economic resilience.

Lukashenko’s words came during a meeting with central bank and commercial banking leaders, as the country faces sweeping sanctions over its support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and alleged human rights violations.

“Today, cryptocurrency-based transactions are more active than ever, and their role in facilitating payments is growing,” Lukashenko said according to local media. To him, the market now requires regulatory oversight, which he instructed the financial sector to move forward with.

He criticized banks for mistreating customers, including forcing insurance on borrowers or refusing old dollar bills, and said any such abuses would lead to disciplinary action starting in 2026.

“Don’t think only in terms of profit,” Lukashenko said, pointing to rising fees, misuse of bank profits, and questionable lending practices.

Lukashenko called for the rollout of an instant payment system by the end of the year, to allow for real-time bank transfers in a bid to improve liquidity. To keep trade flowing amid the sanctions, he pointed to potential cryptocurrency-based turnarounds.

Belarus’ gold and foreign exchange reserves reached $12.5 billion according to the news outlet, buoyed by gold’s rising price.

Earlier this month, Lukashenko pressed regulators to finalize a framework for cryptocurrencies as it moved to cement the country as a crypto-friendly hub. Belarus’ growing embrace of crypto comes amid a sharp de-dollarization trend that has seen it sell $30 million in foreign cash per day this year according to the report.

Late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata laughed at the prospect of localising the original Animal Crossing, as he believed the game was so specific to Japan it would be too difficult.


In an interview with Time Extension, former Nintendo localisation manager Leslie Swan discussed some of the challenges of the job, citing the original Animal Crossing – first released in Japan on N64 as Animal Forest, before a localised version was released in America on the GameCube – as a particularly tricky project.


Nintendo’s Takashi Tezuka, who worked as a producer on Animal Crossing, asked Swan to localise the game. She agreed, despite not playing the game herself in advance as she usually would. “But then he said, ‘No, Leslie, I’m not sure you understand, it’s going to be difficult’,” she said. “And I kept having to assure him that we would make it happen.”


She continued: “Then like a month or two later, I was in a meeting with Mr. Iwata and some other heads of the development group, and we were just kind of going around saying, ‘Here’s what we’re going to be working on’, and I just said, ‘Well, Mr. Tezuka is asking us to work on Animal Forest’ and he just burst out in laughter. He just laughed and said, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to do this.’ And it’s true, just everything in that game was so specific to Japan.”


The localisation team had to rename every character, every catchphrase, and all the events, Swan explained. “So we wanted whatever it was to be something that would be useful in as many areas as possible so we would do things like call it ‘Fireworks Day’ or something so other cultures, not just the US, would be able to use it without it being tied to Independence Day,” she said.


“Then there were also some items that didn’t make sense at all. They would have so much charm in the Japanese version, but they wouldn’t have provided the same kind of charm for Western audiences. I can’t tell you the number of hours we spent on that game, all hands on deck. We were so lucky at that point that we didn’t have other big projects, as we pretty much had the entire staff dedicated to that game.”


In addition, the legal department had to clear every name, as the team were sure merchandise would be an option if the game sold well.


“It must have been at least six months or maybe a year for us to clear the name Animal Crossing,” Swan continued. “I remember we had so many other names that we were in love with and then we would be crushed when they would be rejected. My favourite was ‘Animal Acres’, because the grids of the town lent themselves to being called acres. But again, that didn’t clear.”


Hundreds of names were considered, before finalising Animal Crossing. “We really wanted to maintain ‘Animal’ in the name,” said Swan. “And we did try to keep ‘Forest’ in the name too, but legal told us, ‘No, that’s not going to happen’.”


Swan was also the voice of Princess Peach in Super Mario 64, in addition to working in the localisation team and on Nintendo Power. Eventually, she left Nintendo and retired in 2016.


“I have to say, I was so lucky to be able to work at Nintendo,” she reflected. “It was a lot of work. It was a lot of stress. But one of the things that kept me there as long as I stayed was I just felt like I was learning something new with every single product we worked on. There was new technology and there was always something new to be learned, and the teams I worked with were just so energetic. The whole of the company was just oozing energy. It felt like such a family.”

Belarus President Pushes Transparent Rules to Attract Crypto Investors

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko urged regulators to finalize long-delayed rules for cryptocurrencies and digital tokens, according to remarks reported by state news agency BelTA on Sept. 5.

BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying his 2023 instructions to craft comprehensive regulation had yet to produce approved documents. He called for “transparent rules of the game” and new oversight mechanisms, arguing that Belarus needs to keep up with global crypto adoption while safeguarding investors and financial stability.

Citing a report from the State Control Committee, Lukashenko said an inspection of crypto platforms revealed violations in transaction records. He added, according to BelTA, that in about half of the cases funds transferred abroad by Belarusian investors did not return, a situation he described as unacceptable.

While the report did not give details, this likely referred to situations where investors used foreign crypto platforms and were unable to withdraw their money back to Belarus, either because of regulatory gaps, platform failures or capital outflows that were never repatriated.

The president also noted that technology is advancing faster than legislation, creating pressure for new branches of law. He instructed regulators and the Hi-Tech Park — the special economic zone that oversees much of Belarus’ digital economy — to split responsibilities and use their expertise to draft rules that would reassure businesses at home and abroad they could “work calmly in our digital haven.”

Lukashenko’s latest comments come just months after he publicly considered another way to expand Belarus’ role in crypto.

On March 5, CoinDesk reported that he raised the possibility of harnessing the country’s excess electricity for digital asset mining. “Look at this mining. More and more people are turning to me. If it is profitable for us, let’s do it,” he told his newly appointed energy minister, according to BelTA at the time.

Back then, Lukashenko linked the idea to developments in Washington, noting that the White House had floated the concept of a strategic crypto reserve. “You see the path the world is going. And especially the largest economy in the world. They announced yesterday that they will keep [a crypto] reserve,” he said.

Belarus would not be alone in exploring such a path.

Bhutan has quietly built more than 100 megawatts of bitcoin mining capacity, with plans for an additional 500MW. El Salvador, which adopted bitcoin as legal tender, has promoted geothermal-powered mining on a smaller scale. Lukashenko’s remarks suggested Belarus, with its power surplus, might follow a similar route if regulators give the green light.

Belarus was an early mover in the space.

Decree No. 8 “On the Development of the Digital Economy”, signed on Dec. 21, 2017, established a framework for digital assets under the Hi-Tech Park umbrella, drawing foreign blockchain startups.

Hi-Tech Park (HTP) is a special economic zone in Belarus that offers favorable tax and legal conditions to IT companies. The Dec. 21 decree extended this preferential regime until Jan. 1, 2049 and expanded the list of permitted activities for HTP residents.

Alongside software development, residents were granted the right to operate in new fields such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicle systems, and esports. The decree also reaffirmed the principle of extraterritoriality, allowing companies registered in HTP to provide digital services to clients worldwide regardless of their physical location.

Furthermore, the decree introduced provisions specific to blockchain and digital assets.

It formally recognized digital tokens in Belarusian law and created a legal basis for their issuance, circulation, and exchange, which had not been regulated before. Activities such as crypto mining and token sales were legalized when conducted by HTP residents.

In addition, the decree offered tax exemptions on digital asset transactions for both companies and individuals operating within HTP, and it recognized the validity of smart contracts. These measures positioned Belarus as one of the earliest jurisdictions to adopt a state-backed framework for cryptocurrencies and blockchain services.

However, the system remains incomplete, and Lukashenko’s latest intervention, reported by BelTA, suggests growing impatience to align the country’s regulatory ambitions with its technological aspirations.

For President Lukashenko, the imperative for robust crypto regulation transcends mere market oversight; it encompasses national economic security and technological sovereignty. He articulated that the rapid evolution of “digital life is essentially starting to get ahead of the law,” necessitating the creation of new branches of legislation.

Currently, the primary regulatory body for digital assets in Belarus is the Hi-Tech Park (HTP), the country’s flagship IT and special economic zone. The HTP has operated under the framework of Digital Economy Development Ordinance No. 8, which has provided a foundational, albeit now deemed insufficient, legal environment for the creation, emission, and trading of tokens.

Lukashenko acknowledged the HTP’s role but made it clear that its current mandate is inadequate for the comprehensive oversight now required, signaling an imminent shift that will likely involve traditional state agencies taking a more prominent role alongside the HTP.

According to the report, the specific rules advocated by the president, as detailed in the conference, focus on establishing “transparent rules of the game and mechanisms for control.”

His instructions call for defining the key, principled moments of new regulations that would guarantee financial stability and security for the state, its citizens, and the private sector. Crucially, Lukashenko emphasized that these mechanisms must allow “bona fide commercial entities from Belarus and foreign investors to continue working calmly in our digital haven.”

The Wizards of the Coast president would love a new Dungeons & Dragons MMORPG

In August 2024, John Hight became president of Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro-owned company that’s in charge of two of the most precious brands in gaming: Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

But it’s fair to say that before his arrival, the company had been through something of a rocky patch.

In January 2023, fans were up in arms about leaked plans to restrict D&D’s Open Game Licence (OGL), which permits players to freely use the D&D rules and mechanics. In the wake of overwhelming player backlash, Wizards of the Coast quickly walked back its plans.

At around the same time, the company reportedly cancelled the development of at least five video games. Then, towards the end of the year, parent company Hasbro announced it would cut nearly 1,100 jobs (although the firm didn’t specify if or how the cuts would affect Wizards of the Coast).

The bright spot of Baldur’s Gate 3 notwithstanding, it was a complicated legacy to inherit. But Hight says that “some of the hard bits were past us” by the time he joined.

And right now, he’s ecstatic by the growth of Magic: The Gathering in particular, which has surpassed his expectations, buoyed by the release of Final Fantasy Universe Beyond expansion earlier this year. The much-sought-after crossover cards made $200 million in revenue in a single day.

“I know that in the beginning, I think there was debate about how successful some of these Universe Beyond endeavours would be,” recalls Hight. “Would they overshadow the things that we were doing in our original IP? What was the right mix on it?

“And I think we landed it pretty well. The popularity of our original IP has done extremely well: It wasn’t impacted by the introduction of what we saw with Final Fantasy.”

Hight says that the company knew the Final Fantasy crossover would be big – but it was his call to predict exactly how big, in terms of deciding how many cards to print.

“We wanted to make sure that we had enough cards in place,” he says. “But you don’t want to make too many cards, because it’s a collectible, right? And if you make too many, it’s not like you’re going to discount them and sell them later. You literally have to bury them. So we had to be very careful.

“And then once early signs were that, oh my gosh, this is going to be bigger than we thought it was, we had to move quickly to reprints so that we’d be in place by the time the expansion came out.”

Hight says that for the Universe Beyond expansions have been particularly successful at expanding the audience. “We’ve had a lot of new players come into Magic,” he says.

Digital versus physical

Hight has had a long career in video games, with stints at The 3DO Company, EA, Atari, and Sony. But before he joined Wizards of the Coast, he spent nearly 13 years at Blizzard Entertainment, culminating in him becoming general manager of the Warcraft franchise.

So although he might be comfortable dealing with the digital side of Wizards of the Coast’s business – juggling the various video games based on its franchises – we wonder how challenging it has been to adapt to the physical side.

“I mean, I’ve been in the gaming business so long that I can still remember what it was like to press discs and put them in a box,” he smiles. “So in terms of that aspect of supply chain, that I’m familiar with.”

But he recalls that the “spectre of tariffs” at the start of this year prompted an urgent look at the dependencies in the Magic card supply chain, in order to assess how the company might be impacted in the wake of President Trump’s wide-ranging import tax measures.

“Fortunately for us, we had made the decisions a while ago with Magic to produce product in-region. A lot of that was to be faster [and more] responsive to our player bases in those regions.”

That panic aside, he has found the physical side of the business intriguing. “One of my first field trips was to go to one of our major print facilities in North America, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and literally see how Magic cards get made, going from the blank sheets all the way through the process,” he says. “It’s fascinating.”

Under one roof

But how does he find balancing the physical and digital sides of the business?

“One of the things I’ve done is effectively move to a franchise view of how we do things,” says Hight. “So all of Magic, whether it’s digital or physical, sits under Ken Troop.”

Troop has been with the company for 20 years, and acts as the global play lead for the game. “Obviously, he knows a lot about Magic,” says Hight. “I wanted to make sure that anything that we did on the digital side was true and authentic to the Magic community. And I wanted to make sure that all of our activities were under one roof, so to speak.”

Similarly, on the D&D side, all of the operations now come under Dan Ayoub, “who’s a longtime D&D player,” says Hight. “He started playing when he was 12.”

Hight notes that by aligning everything Magic-related under one division and everything D&D-related under another, it should allow for better coordination between different aspects of the same franchise: such as making sure TV or film adaptations align with game releases.

He gives the example of the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. “We’d love to have had a D&D book or campaign a part and parcel with the movie,” he says.

He cites Stranger Things as another example. The show led to “fantastic” interest in D&D, he says, “but it’d be nice to have that all lined up, so when this thing rolls out, we’ve got a campaign for you to enjoy that’s something you saw on the show, or the characters in the show.”

Hight’s aim is to ensure that the digital and physical sides of the business are fully integrated – and he anticipates that more gamers will return to in-person play.

“Unfortunately, because of COVID, there’s a whole generation of gamers that has spent a good deal of their time playing only online,” he says. “And they’re re-discovering the joy of being able to play together.

“What I want us to be able to do is have players move fairly seamlessly between in person play and online play.”

That means ensuring the digital and physical sides are fully linked up. So with Magic, for example, the aim is to debut cards at the same time in both the physical game and in the digital version, Magic: The Gathering Arena.

In fact, Hight notes that the firm’s tabletop group, Studio X in Seattle, has now been combined with the internal group working on Arena.

But in addition to the Magic and D&D divisions, there’s a third vertical: Wizards Digital Ventures.

“That is essentially where we’re going to incubate new franchises,” says Hight, “or take existing franchises from our board games, physical toys, or even some of the digital products that we may have on the licencing side, but now we want to elevate it to a larger digital presence.”

Hight is currently the acting head of the division, but the company is looking for a new VP to lead it. Their role will be to build relationships with the development community and matchmake developers with IP.

Ultimately, Hight says, the key thing he wants to achieve is to make Wizards of the Coast a kind of safe haven for talented people. “What makes games great is the talent behind them, and I think if we can create an environment where they feel appreciated, if they feel like they can do their best work, that will be the key to our success.”

A fresh approach

One of the biggest changes Hight has made is altering the way that the company makes video games. There’s now far more coordination.

He points out that both Wizards of the Coast’s internal studios and the company’s external partners are all working on a common platform: Unreal Engine 5.

In addition, Wizards of the Coast operates a central content development team that any of its internal or external studios can draw on. The idea, he says, is to have a “set of artists and designers that are trained up on the IP, that have a love and affection for the IP and an understanding of it, and can effectively move from one game to the next.”

The move aims to avoid the typical peaks and troughs of game development.

“One of the complexities from a business standpoint for these big games,” he says, is that they require the assembly of a huge workforce towards the tail end of the development cycle. “Then after the game releases, you’ve suddenly got this very large team on your hands.”

The task then is to find something for all those people to do at a point when the next project might only require a few individuals to work on the concept stages.

But by maintaining a central team, he says, “we’ll have this group of people that we can move from one game to the next.” And because they all share a love of D&D and will all be working on story-driven, D&D-themed games, the transitions should be relatively easy. “It isn’t like we’re trying to take them from a football game to a racing game to an RPG.”

Wizards of the Coast’s internal studios include Atomic Arcade in North Carolina, Invoke Studios in Montreal, and Skeleton Key and Archetype in Austin, Texas.

In addition, Hight has just welcomed a team of 15 former Cliffhanger Games employees who had been working on EA’s cancelled Black Panther game. Led by Michael de Plater, former VP at Monolith Productions, the team will be incubating a new title.

Meanwhile, the external studio Giant Skull, led by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen, is working on a single-player action-adventure title set in the world of D&D.

Hight says that in addition to drawing on a central pool of Wizards of the Coast artists and designers, its studios have been utilising outsourcing and co-development. He notes that a portion of Exodus, Archetype’s AAA sci-fi action adventure, is being developed by Climax.

Speaking of Exodus, Hight gives it as an example of the kind of joined-up transmedia approach he’s hoping to foster within Wizards of the Coast, noting that celebrated British sci-fi author Peter F. Hamilton has written two “incredible novels” that explore the Exodus universe.

The AI future

We move on to the thorny topic of AI: what role does Hight think it will play in the future of game development?

Hight stresses that both Magic and D&D are “very supportive of the art community” and that artists are the “foundation” of both. “The art that you see in a D&D product will come from the mind of a human, will be made by a human,” he says.

He’s open, however, to the use of AI to come up with ideas. “But the final product, the thing that you see, will be made by a human being. And that’s our position on it. So we’re not using generative AI to create the artwork for our cards or games.”

He thinks that AI could be used to help out in the development process, though. “Absolutely, we’re looking at that.”

He stresses that any uses of AI will be examined “on a case by case basis” that questions how it’s being used.

“Is this displacing the human soul, spirit, creativity in doing it? Because we don’t want derivative work. We want that innovation. We want things that people have dreamt up.

“But on the other hand, is it allowing us to explore different things? Is it allowing us to take the drudgery out of things?

“For instance, generating an audio performance so that a writer can hear their words before we go into the recording studio I think is going to help us make those recording sessions go a lot faster and smoother.”

The idea here would be to see how players respond to AI-generated lines first and to examine how the dialogue works in game, with the recording sessions with real actors being left as late as possible in the development process – so by the time the sessions happen, the dialogue is honed and complete, enabling the actors to give the “best performance”.

He also thinks machine learning could be useful for checking for errors in code, thus helping to avoid ‘breaking the build’ when introducing new elements into a game, or highlighting problems that could occur further down the road of development.

“AI is really good at that,” Hight says. “Humans, it’s a little bit clunky for us to figure out.”

Dynamic difficulty is another area where he thinks AI could be useful. “Right now, it kind of stinks,” he says in regards to difficulty settings, with binary choices between, say, easy or hard difficulties that don’t allow for nuance.

He gives an example. “I’m pretty good at puzzle solving, but I’m kind of crap these days on dexterity stuff, and yet I like games that have both. So wouldn’t it be great if the AI was analysing a little bit about how I’m playing?”

He suggests the game could, perhaps, increase the difficulty of puzzles but reduce the difficulty of dexterity challenges if it sensed the player was breezing through the former, but struggling with the latter.

MMORPG ambitions

Finally, given the huge, resurgent popularity of D&D – and noting Hight’s background with World of Warcraft – we suggest that it’s strange there isn’t a current MMORPG based around the D&D universe.

“I’d love to have that,” he says. “I think that we’ll want to rethink what an MMO is in this day and age. I think the traditional model that Blizzard – well, even before that, Ultima Online, Everquest – pursued, that could use updating.

“I think in our case, it’s probably a crawl, walk, run [situation]. We want to make sure that we’ve assembled the talent, we have the backend technology, we have the plans to pursue. But of course, that’s a glimmer in my eye. I want to see that happen.”

He says he drops hints “all the time” to his team about the possibilities. “I think technology can help us a lot, too, to make some of the things that were difficult to accomplish back in the day a lot easier.”

Of course, the modern online gaming landscape is also much more competitive than the one into which World of Warcraft was born. Any new MMORPG would have to compete for attention with ‘forever games’ like Fortnite, Minecraft and, indeed, the still very much ongoing World of Warcraft.

But Hight reckons one of the key strengths of D&D is its flexibility. “We laid the foundation for great storytelling, great world building,” he says. “We can adapt to different styles of play, different distribution methods.”

And he thinks there’s always the opportunity to do something revolutionary, rather than evolutionary.

In the Digital Ventures division in particular, he wants designers to pursue innovation. “What [will] an MMO look like in five, ten years?” he asks. “Where do people go next, after Battle Royale?”

“It’s out there, there’s people working on it right now. And what I’m interested in is, can we tie the ideas that they have for gameplay to some of the worlds and the brands that we have?”

Mappa President Hopes ‘Reze Arc’ Movie Will Trigger Fandom Boom for ‘Chainsaw Man’

Chainsaw Man fans are a little more than a month away from experiencing the film arc continuation of the anime, Reze Arc, in theaters. Before its release, Studio Mappa’s presidents spoke about why they chose to adapt the manga arc into a film and provided an update on the anime’s possible second season.

Speaking with Anime News Network at Anime Expo 2025, Mappa head Manabu Ohtsuka and vice president Hiroya Hasegawa gave their reasoning for making Reze Arc a movie instead of an episodic second season fans can stream from home.

“From a business standpoint, we want to have as many people as possible enjoy The Reze Arc. When we did that, we aimed to maximize our business. It should go theatrical. However, with Season One of the series, we were able to work closely with Crunchyroll, and they’ve done a fabulous job,” Ohtsuka said.

“At the same time, those viewers and subscribers of Crunchyroll may not necessarily go to theaters. They might be a little more at home-based. We want to reach a different, broader audience. We’re able to team up with Sony Pictures, which would be reaching such people.”

When asked if revenue shares were another factor in Reze Arc‘s theatrical release, Ohtsuka said it was less of a factor as was widening the anime’s fanbase.

Ohtsuka also clarified to ANN a previous statement made in an interview with Tokyo Keizai, where Chainsaw Man was compared to another megapopular Mappa anime, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Ohtsuka said the latter “didn’t have the same level of impact” and left him “feeling unsatisfied.” At the time, Ohtsuka’s comments made fans question whether a follow-up to Chainsaw Man would happen. Now, Ohtsuka told ANN that his comments were blown out of proportion.

“This isn’t a criticism of the article or Tokyo Keizai, but it was never our intention to compare Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man in any way. We just thought we could have squeezed so much more out of Chainsaw Man‘s IP and the manga. There is so much room for improvement, and that’s something we are striving for. That’s our goal. There’s only a bright future, and that’s what we’re going for.”

Jujutsu Kaisen also had a theatrical release for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, back in 2022, which performed well domestically and abroad. It also had a compilation film of its second-season anime arc, Hidden Inventory/Premature Death, which was shown in theaters, earning $2.5 million in the US, according to ANN. Chainsaw Man appears to be following suit, with mooted plans to similarly drum up hype for the series.

Crunchyroll recapped Chainsaw Man’s first season to lure in wide-eyed newcomers with two compilation films on the streamer. Those features, appropriately titled Chainsaw Man – The Compilation and Chainsaw Man – The Compilation: Part II, will be released in Japan on September 5, with plans to make them available in the U.S. and elsewhere later this month.

In addition to catching as many folks up to speed before Reze Arc‘s premiere, Mappa also announced an anime adaptation of manga creator Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s slice-of-life, end-of-volume short-panel Chainsaw Man stories to give folks who are deeper into the manga a treat. While Crunchyroll has yet to announce when that will make its way beyond Japan, it may be in the lead up to or following the film’s release.

ANN also pressed Mappa’s executives with a question on every fan’s lips: What’s happening with season two? Unfortunately, their answers were wishy-washy at best…but they didn’t say no.

“We’re always thinking about what’s the best way to deliver Chainsaw Man to the fans who love the franchise. That’s what’s always on our minds,” Ohtsuka said. “But how we’re going to do it, if we’re going to do it, we’ll announce it when we announce it. We can’t talk about it.”

“As Ohtsuka-san mentioned, [Reze Arc] is a continuation of the first season. We are being loyal to the original content. We asked ourselves, ‘How are we going to do it?’ We thought that the cinema was the best way to deliver the Reze Arc. After Reze, if we are going to create more Chainsaw Man, we’ll probably follow from there,” Hasegawa said. “And then we’ll reevaluate and think, ‘Are we going to do it as a series? Are we going to do it as a film?’ It’s another question we’ll be asking ourselves at that time.”

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc hits theaters in Japan on September 19, before hitting the U.S. on October 29.
