Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack: review

The Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack is a power bank designed for charging Galaxy and other small devices.

It has quite a sleek design with an organic-looking finish, emphasized by the beige colorway of my unit, which is mottled for a pebble-like appearance. It also feels quite solid, although there is some flexing to the panels, so it isn’t the most rugged power bank around.

However, it’s pleasingly thin and light, and combined with the rounded edges at one end, this makes the Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack relatively easy to carry around. However, it’s quite long, even for a wireless power bank, and many of the best power banks with similar power and capacity specs are smaller than this.

What also mars its seamless design is the hump of the wireless charging pad, although its soft material offers extra cushioning and grip for your device, and seems quite resistant to tears and scratches.

There’s no real interface to speak of on the Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack. It features a single power button and five LED dots: one indicating charging activity and the other four representing battery life. These are placed at the end of the unit, next to the USB ports, and are large and bright enough to be seen clearly.

The wireless charging feature is capable of outputting 7.5W of power. It also features two USB-C ports, both of which serve as inputs and outputs. These offer Super Fast Charging, providing 25W of output power each when charging a single device.

Three-way charging is also supported when using both ports and the wireless pad, although the power output drops to 7.5W for all outputs in such cases. It’s also a shame that while charging, the battery life indicators don’t remain lit, so you can’t tell how much battery the Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack has left without pressing the power button first, which is somewhat inconvenient.

It managed to wirelessly charge a Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus, which has a 4,755mAh battery, from empty to full in about three and a half hours, which is quite a good performance. In the process, the Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack lost all but one of its LED dots, indicating that it had between 5-20% left in reserve.

This is somewhat disappointing, since it means you’ll only get one full wireless charge out of it. What’s more, charging the bank itself from empty to full took over three hours, which isn’t particularly fast; other 10K power banks are faster at charging themselves than this.

The Samsung 25W 10,000mAh Wireless Battery Pack is reasonably priced considering its wireless charging capability and the inclusion of two USB-C ports for additional charging. However, there are other wireless chargers out there with smaller form factors that perform just as well, such as the Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K), which even includes a handy flip stand for propping up your phone.

MSI China is so confident in its power supplies, its warranties now cover all your PC’s components

MSI China has announced an extension of its warranty services, now offering full coverage of every component in a PC connected to a high-end MSI power supply. If an MSI 80+ Gold, Platinum, or Titanium power supply fails in mainland China and harms other PC components, MSI will now cover up to 100% of the replacement price of matching hardware.

In its original Bilibili post, MSI shares its commitment to “perfect after-sales support” in the Chinese mainland. If a malfunctioning MSI power supply results in damage to itself or other components in a client PC, MSI will provide a complete third-party inspection. On the receipt of all proof of purchase for each damaged component and the sign-off of the third-party inspection team, MSI will offer compensation to customers.

If a damaged PC component is a commercially available MSI product, a matching replacement will be offered. If the damaged component is a non-MSI product, a similar MSI product will be selected as an alternative. And if the component is no longer sold, MSI will offer cash compensation based on the remaining warranty time on the power supply. Within the first year of PSU purchase, customers will receive 100% compensation on unavailable parts, down to 90% in the second and third years of PSU operation, and 75% compensation until the end of the warranty period.

As MSI’s 80+ Gold and higher power supplies often come with 10-year warranties, one of the longer warranty periods typically seen in the PSU industry, this broad expansion of the warranty to cover the rest of the computer’s components is an exciting show of confidence from MSI. Very few, if any, other PSU manufacturers offer warranties that extend out to cover the rest of a PC’s components in case of power supply failure.

Lately, electrical failures in PCs are becoming something of an occurrence, thanks often to the ludicrous power draws and electrical design of Nvidia’s 50-series power connectors. MSI’s warranty expansion to cover virtually the entire inside of a PC is a major pro-consumer move, with some risk lightened by mainland China’s historically limited supply of top-end 50-series GPUs. Still, the odds are that at least one hopeful user submitting their warranty claim will be foiled by mis-seated pins causing malfunction rather than the PSU itself.

There is no indication yet whether this same warranty program will extend out to cover the U.S. or other global markets beyond China. MSI utilizes OEM Channel Well Technology to manufacture all of its PSUs, including, assumedly, those sold in China, so nothing points to MSI being at higher risk of extending the same broad warranty coverage elsewhere. Those outside of China can still benefit from the comfortable 10-year standard warranty on MSI’s high-end PSUs, though without the extra peace of mind offered by the new offer.

The Shiba Inu ecosystem has officially taken a major step towards full decentralization with the launch of ShibDAO. Key features of ShibDAO’s decentralized governance system include on-chain staking, off-chain voting, and the delegation system. The on-chain staking function, introduced as Bury 2.0, allows users to stake SHIB, BONE, LEASH, or TREAT tokens to gain influence. The more tokens users stake and the longer they maintain their stakes, the more voting power they accumulate, strengthening their voice within the governance process. As of now, no staking rewards are active, with the current phase focused solely on governance participation.

Off-chain voting has been integrated into the system through Snapshot, where community members can propose changes and vote without incurring any gas fees. Real-time on-chain staking data directly influences vote outcomes, ensuring that voting power is dynamically linked to participants’ actual investments in the ecosystem.

For those who lack the time or inclination to vote directly, ShibDAO offers a delegation system. This allows token holders to delegate their governance power to trusted community leaders, with the ability to retract their delegation at any time. This flexible system ensures that even those who cannot actively participate can still influence the project’s trajectory through trusted representatives.

Additionally, ShibDAO introduces the DAO Factory, which enables users to launch their own decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) within the Shiba Inu ecosystem. This feature allows anyone to create DAOs for a range of purposes, including gaming, art, decentralized finance (DeFi), or public goods, further decentralizing the platform’s structure.

Currently, four distinct DAOs are operational within the Shiba Inu ecosystem: Shiba Inu DAO, the official central hub for social governance, where veSHIB stakers lead initiatives in community events, charity, UX upgrades, and public good funding. Second, there’s the Bone DAO, focused on Shibarium’s technological evolution, with veBONE stakers overseeing upgrades, contract changes, network improvements, and technical integrations.

AI could consume more power than Bitcoin by the end of 2025

AI could soon surpass Bitcoin mining in energy consumption, according to a new analysis that concludes artificial intelligence could use close to half of all the electricity consumed by data centers globally by the end of 2025.

The estimates come from Alex de Vries-Gao, a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Institute for Environmental Studies who has tracked cryptocurrencies’ electricity consumption and environmental impact in previous research and on his website Digiconomist. He published his latest commentary on AI’s growing electricity demand last week in the journal Joule.

AI already accounts for up to a fifth of the electricity that data centers use, according to de Vries-Gao. It’s a tricky number to pin down without big tech companies sharing data specifically on how much energy their AI models consume. De Vries-Gao had to make projections based on the supply chain for specialized computer chips used for AI. He and other researchers trying to understand AI’s energy consumption have found, however, that its appetite is growing despite efficiency gains — and at a fast enough clip to warrant more scrutiny.

“Oh boy, here we go.”

With alternative cryptocurrencies to Bitcoin — namely Ethereum — moving to less energy-intensive technologies, de Vries-Gao says he figured he was about to hang up his hat. And then “ChatGPT happened,” he tells The Verge. “I was like, Oh boy, here we go. This is another usually energy-intensive technology, especially in extremely competitive markets.”

There are a couple key parallels he sees. First is a mindset of “bigger is better.” “We see these big tech [companies] constantly boosting the size of their models, trying to have the very best model out there, but in the meanwhile, of course, also boosting the resource demands of those models,” he says.

That chase has led to a boom in new data centers for AI, particularly in the US, where there are more data centers than in any other country. Energy companies plan to build out new gas-fired power plants and nuclear reactors to meet growing electricity demand from AI. Sudden spikes in electricity demand can stress power grids and derail efforts to switch to cleaner sources of energy, problems similarly posed by new crypto mines that are essentially like data centers used to validate blockchain transactions.

The other parallel de Vries-Gao sees with his previous work on crypto mining is how hard it can be to suss out how much energy these technologies are actually using and their environmental impact. To be sure, many major tech companies developing AI tools have set climate goals and include their greenhouse gas emissions in annual sustainability reports. That’s how we know that both Google’s and Microsoft’s carbon footprints have grown in recent years as they focus on AI. But companies usually don’t break down the data to show what’s attributable to AI specifically.

To figure this out, de Vries-Gao used what he calls a “triangulation” technique. He turned to publicly available device details, analyst estimates, and companies’ earnings calls to estimate hardware production for AI and how much energy that hardware will likely use. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which fabricates AI chips for other companies including Nvidia and AMD, saw its production capacity for packaged chips used for AI more than double between 2023 and 2024.

After calculating how much specialized AI equipment can be produced, de Vries-Gao compared that to information about how much electricity these devices consume. Last year, they likely burned through as much electricity as de Vries-Gao’s home country of the Netherlands, he found. He expects that number to grow closer to a country as large as the UK by the end of 2025, with power demand for AI reaching 23GW.

Last week, a separate report from consulting firm ICF forecasts a 25 percent rise in electricity demand in the US by the end of the decade thanks in large part to AI, traditional data centers, and Bitcoin mining.

It’s still really hard to make blanket predictions about AI’s energy consumption and the resulting environmental impact — a point laid out clearly in a deeply reported article published in MIT Technology Review last week with support from the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism. A person using AI tools to promote a fundraiser might create nearly twice as much carbon pollution if their queries were answered by data centers in West Virginia than in California, as an example. Energy intensity and emissions depend on a range of factors including the types of queries made, the size of the models answering those queries, and the share of renewables and fossil fuels on the local power grid feeding the data center.

It’s a mystery that could be solved if tech companies were more transparent about AI in their sustainability reporting. “The crazy amount of steps that you have to go through to be able to put any number at all on this, I think this is really absurd,” de Vries-Gao says. “It shouldn’t be this ridiculously hard. But sadly, it is.”

Looking further into the future, there’s even more uncertainty when it comes to whether energy efficiency gains will eventually flatten out electricity demand. DeepSeek made a splash earlier this year when it said that its AI model could use a fraction of the electricity that Meta’s Llama 3.1 model does — raising questions about whether tech companies really need to be such energy hogs in order to make advances in AI. The question is whether they’ll prioritize building more efficient models and abandon the “bigger is better” approach of simply throwing more data and computing power at their AI ambitions.

When Ethereum transitioned to a far more energy efficient strategy for validating transactions than Bitcoin mining, its electricity consumption suddenly dropped by 99.988 percent. Environmental advocates have pressured other blockchain networks to follow suit. But others — namely Bitcoin miners — are reluctant to abandon investments they’ve already made in existing hardware (nor give up other ideological arguments for sticking with old habits).

There’s also the risk of Jevons paradox with AI, that more efficient models will still gobble up increasing amounts of electricity because people just start to use the technology more. Either way, it’ll be hard to manage the issue without measuring it first.

We’re just one day away from the launch of Elden Ring Nightreign, From Software’s three-player co-op action game that reimagines Elden Ring as a roguelite to great success. Ahead of its launch, publisher Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for the game that is a must-watch (probably not for a reason you can guess).

Titled “Bring Me To Life Trailer,” this Nightreign trailer utilizes Evanescence’s popular song, “Bring Me To Life,” to great effect to create something that’s more like an AMV (anime music video) or something you’d see on VH1 or MTV in the early 2000s. Perhaps it’s because I’m a millennial (born in 1995, so just barely), but this trailer just feels right.

Nvidia to boost AI server racks to megawatt scale, increasing power delivery by five times or more

Nvidia is developing a new power infrastructure called the 800V HVDC architecture to deliver the power requirements of 1 MW server racks and more, with plans to deploy it by 2027. According to Nvidia, the current 54V DC power distribution system is already reaching its limit as racks begin to exceed 200 kilowatts. As AI chips become more powerful and demand more electricity, these existing systems would no longer be able to practically keep up, requiring data centers to build new solutions so that their electrical circuits do not get overwhelmed.

For example, Nvidia says that its GB200 NVL72 or GB300 NVL72 needs around eight power shelves. If it used 54V DC power distribution, the power shelves would consume 64 U of rack space, which is more than what the average server rack can accommodate. Aside from this, it also said that delivering 1 MW using 54V DC requires a 200 kg copper busbar — that means a gigawatt AI data center, which many companies are now racing to build, would need 500,000 tons of copper. This is nearly half of the U.S.’s total copper output in 2024, and that’s just for one site.

So, instead of using the 54V DC system, which is installed directly at the server cabinet, Nvidia is proposing to use the 800V HVDC, which will connect near the site’s 13.8kV AC power source. Aside from freeing up space in the server racks, this will also streamline the approach and make power transmission within the data center more efficient. It will also remove the multiple AC to DC and DC to DC transformations used in the current system, which added complexity.

The 800V HVDC will also reduce the system current for the same power load, potentially increasing the total wattage delivered by up to 85% without the need to upgrade the conductor. “With lower current, thinner conductors can handle the same load, reducing copper requirements by 45%,” said the company. “Additionally, DC systems eliminate AC-specific inefficiencies, such as skin effect and reactive power losses, further improving efficiency.”

According to Digitimes [machine translated], the AI giant is working with Infineon, Texas Instruments, and Navitas to help develop this system. Furthermore, it’s expected that they will deploy wide-bandgap semiconductors like gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) to achieve the high power densities needed by these powerful AI systems. The 800V HVDC is a technical challenge that data centers must solve for power efficiency, especially as they start to breach 1 GW capacity and more. This solution should help them reduce wasted power, which, in turn, would reduce operating costs.

InWin preps 1650W GPU power supply with four 16-pin power connectors

The IW-1650W offers a 1,650W capacity solely for graphics cards. InWin employs a single-rail design in this power supply. Currently, the IW-1650W does not hold any 80 Plus, ETA, or Lambda certifications. However, the manufacturer asserts that the power supply achieves up to 90% efficiency and features an active PFC of 0.99. The unit utilizes a single 13.5cm cooling fan for active heat dissipation.

The IW-1650W complies with the PCIe 5.1 CEM standard and has four 12V-2×6 power connectors, enabling support for a maximum of four graphics cards. The power supply’s modular design lets you remove unnecessary power cables.

The IW-1650W concept resembles the latter, where mining rigs employ two power supplies to enhance power capacity for multiple graphics cards. While Nvidia SLI and AMD CrossFire are not as common, multi-GPU setups exist in professional and workstation domains.

The IW-1650W is a secondary power supply and does not operate independently. You need to pair it with a main unit to use it, which means selecting a case that accommodates dual power supplies. Fortunately, this won’t be an issue as there are plenty of options available, including cases spacious enough to fit up to three power supplies.

While InWin recently unveiled the IW-1650W at Computex 2025, the company has yet to announce its availability or, more importantly, the pricing. This year’s Computex has revealed that 3000W power supplies are on the horizon for consumers, which could limit the IW-1650W’s practical use unless combined with a 2000W unit.

Using it alongside a lower-capacity supply would be illogical since the same outcome could be achieved with one of the new 3000W options. Alternatively, you could opt to install the IW-1650W alongside another 3000W unit, but realistically, who in their right mind needs 4650W of power?

Bitlayer backed by 31% of BTC hashrate to power Bitcoin smart contracts

Bitlayer’s Bitcoin smart-contract system is being implemented by mining pools behind 31.5% of the network’s hashrate, a development that will help ensure that its system will operate on the Bitcoin blockchain, the company said.

According to a May 27 announcement shared with Cointelegraph, Bitlayer’s BitVM implementation will be supported by major Bitcoin (BTC) mining pools including Antpool, F2Pool, and SpiderPool. Antpool CEO Andy Chow said:

“Antpool has become the bridge operator for Bitlayer to support Bitcoin innovation and protect miners’ interests.”

BitVM (Bitcoin Virtual Machine) is a framework that enables complex smart contracts to be deployed on the Bitcoin blockchain without changing the base protocol. The idea was introduced by Robin Linux in 2023, and allows for the complex computation involved in smart contract systems to be verified onchain and executed offchain in a way resembling optimistic rollups.

A BitVM implementation

Bitlayer is a BitVM implementation, aiming to allow Bitcoin to flow through decentralized finance (DeFi) systems and layer-2 networks. According to Chow, the implementation might lead to heightened activity in Bitcoin’s network and generate revenue for miners:

“This expansion of Bitcoin’s use cases will drive more network activity, generating additional transaction fees and revenue opportunities for miners. As block rewards decrease over time, growing fee markets are critical for miners’ sustainable income.“

Mining pools such as Chow’s Antpool play a critical role in the adoption of BitVM implementations because they directly determine the inclusion and validation of new types of transactions and scripts at the consensus layer.

BitVM requires miners to include custom Taproot-based transactions that encode interactive verification logic. Mining pools must agree to include these non-standard or computationally intensive scripts in blocks, otherwise the protocol would simply not function.

Mining pool support

According to Hashrate Index data, Antpool controls 17.2% of Bitcoin’s hashrate as of May 26, while F2Pool controls 8.2% and Spiderpool 6.1%. This results in a total supporting hashrate of 31.5%.

This is enough to secure transaction inclusion in under one in every three blocks. This is presumably enough for testing, prototyping and early-stage applications.

With this percentage of supporting hashrate, developers can build functional systems with the assumption that, despite some latency, BitVM transactions will be processed. So while it is hard to view this hashrate as allowing a fully functional deployment, it is likely enough for the early phases of BitVM development.

A Bitlayer representative told Cointelegraph that “should collective hashrate support weaken or policy shifts occur within Bitcoin Core, we have a multi-layered contingency plan.” This plan includes the “expanded mining pool partnerships,” referring to the company’s intention to keep onboarding more mining pools.
