OpenAI is playing Pokemon Red live on Twitch

by admin May 31, 2025

OpenAI’s o3 model has been tasked with playing Pokemon Red and achieving the ultimate goal of defeating the Elite Four to become Kanto’s champion.

The experiment, being streamed on Twitch since May 27, has the AI provide its reasoning for every individual decision displayed on-screen as it attempts to complete a series of objectives. While the overall aim is for o3 to complete the entire game, that goal is divided into smaller directives.

As of writing, the model has managed to obtain two of the eight Gym Badges required to access the endgame Elite Four and is now on its way to Vermilion City to hitch a ride on the S.S. Anne.

How long that will take remains to be seen, however. Every action, including movement and battles, is assessed for a significant amount of time to find the most efficient action.

What is OpenAI o3?

Unlike ChatGPT, which is a general-purpose chatbot, OpenAI o3 is essentially a more specialized model designed to have superior reasoning for problem-solving.

Why Pokemon Red was chosen to showcase these qualities, however, isn’t clear. The Game Boy classic’s slow-paced gameplay, married with several semi-complex mechanics, is one possible answer. Whatever the reason, this is far from the first time Pokemon Red and Blue have been used for experimental endeavours.

In 2014, TwitchPlaysPokemon allowed viewers to collectively play Pokemon Red by voting on inputs for the game to make remotely. The stream eventually went viral and ended with the defeat of final boss, Blue, after 16 days.

This isn’t the first instance Pokemon being used to put AI through its paces, either. In April 2025, a software engineer programmed Google’s Gemini to play Pokemon Blue.

Pokemon Presents locked in for July, as Pokemon Legends Z-A finally catches a proper release date for Switch 2 and OG Switch

by admin May 29, 2025

Attention all Bulbasaur plushie owners and potential future Bulbasaur plushie owners. The Pokemon Company has officially announced a Pokemon Presents showcase set to take place in July. Plus, we finally know for sure when exactly Pokemon Legends Z-A will be arriving for Switch 2 and original Switch.

This next Pokemon Presents will be taking place on Tuesday, July 22, meaning you’ve got a month and a bit to wait. You’ll be able to watch it at 6AM PST, which is 2PM BST, 9AM ET, and 3PM CEST via the official Pokemon YouTube channel.

There’ve been no further details announced as to what it’ll feature, aside from “the latest news and updates from the world of Pokemon”, which yeah, duh, Pokemon showcase. It’s worth noting that Nintendo’s Switch 2 will have been out a month and a bit by then, so it seems likely we could see some more Pokemon games aimed at that console.

One that pretty much seems like a lock unless TPC thinks it’s shared enough info already is Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which has just finally been given a full release date. Both the Switch 2 and original Switch versions will be dropping on October 16, with eShop pre-orders kicking off June 5. The game’s moody nighttime cover art has also been revealed.

“Players who purchase either the physical or digital version of Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch will have the option to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by purchasing an upgrade pack,” TPC wrote, “Upgrade packs will be available on Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store.”

If you’ve forgotten what the game is here’s the synopsis: “Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a new frontier for the Pokémon video game series, blending an RPG story unfolding in a single city with action elements and a real-time battle system unlike anything seen before in the franchise Trainers can look forward to the beginning of a new adventure in Lumiose City—one woven by people and Pokémon together!”

If you’re planning on playing a bunch more Pokemon TCG Pocket while you wait for this next Presents showcase to roll around, you can consult our huge array of helpful TCG Pocket guides for expert advice on things like assembling decks based around ex Pokemon ranging from Cresselia to Yanmega.

Pokemon Video Games Are Closing In On Half A Billion Sales

by admin May 26, 2025

Next year, Pokemon will celebrate its 30th anniversary, but The Pokemon Company didn’t wait to find a reason to celebrate now. In the 29 years since the franchise’s debut, almost 500 million copies of Pokemon video games have been sold.

According to The Pokemon Company, the sales total across all platforms is 489 million through the end of March 2025. No further breakdown was included that displayed which Pokemon titles sold the most, but it did include a notice that the games are available in nine languages.

When it comes to the trading card game, Pokemon’s success is even more impressive. 75 billion Pokemon cards have been sold since 1996. There’s no way the Pokemon video game sales can match that number any time soon. But the title most likely to carry the games over 500 million is Pokemon Legends Z-A, which recently unveiled a few of its starter Pokeman ahead of its launch on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 later this year.

Pokemon has become so pervasive in our culture that we’re barely surprised anymore when someone gets arrested with a stolen Pokemon card worth over $300,000. In this week alone, it was announced that all 140 Episodes of Pokemon the Series: XY are coming to Netflix next month. In other Pokemon-related news, Pokemon TCG Pocket’s next expansion launches on May 29.

How to get Machop in Pokemon Go & can it be Shiny?

by admin May 25, 2025

Machop remains one of the most memorable creatures in the franchise, and in Pokemon Go, its final evolution, Machamp, excels in combat. So, learn how to get this fighter, its other stages, and Shiny versions.

Machop is one of the 151 original Pokemon from the Kanto region, and in Niantic’s game, it is one of the best Fighting-type Pokemon available.

To celebrate the end of the Might and Mastery season, which focuses on this particular type of Pokemon, Machop will be the headliner of the upcoming Community Day Classic. Plus, its evolution, Machamp, will receive its Gigantamax form.

So, learn everything you need to know to catch this creature and take it to its full potential.

How to get Machop in Pokemon Go

Having been introduced to the game since launch, Machop has had many ways to be caught. However, currently, it can only be found:

  • As a wild encounter (increased spawns during the May 24 Community Day Classic)
  • As a 2-Star Max Battle boss

NIANTIC

Previously, players could hatch Machop from 2km, 5km, and 7km Eggs. It has also appeared as a Tier 1 Raid boss and as a reward for completing plenty of Field/Special/Timed Research. For a while, its Shadow version was part of the Team Go Rocket, and trainers could rescue it from Cliff‘s grasp.

How to evolve Machop into Machoke and Machamp

Tiny Machop is part of a three-member family, which means a good amount of Candy will be required to register all of its forms in the Pokedex. Luckily, there are no special requirements or items. In fact, there’s an alternative for those who don’t want to grind so hard.

To evolve Machop into Machoke, players will need to feed it 25 Candy. To turn Machoke into Machamp, trainers can either feed it an extra 100 Candy or trade it to another player to trigger the evolution.

Machop Candy

With Machop spawning nonstop during the upcoming Community Day Classic, players shouldn’t have trouble gathering the required amount of Candy.

However, to do it faster, they can always use Pinap Berries to increase the amount of Candy they receive per catch. Then, they can transfer their extra Machop to Professor Willow in exchange for a few more.

They can also set the Pokemon as their Buddy and take it for long walks, or trade some Rare Candy for more Machop Candy.

How to get Gigantamax Machamp

To give the Might and Mastery season a proper send-off, Gigantamax Machamp will debut during its own Max Battle Day. The event will take place on Sunday, May 25, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM local time.

NIANTIC

During those three hours, Gigantamax Machamp will take over Power Spots, appearing in 6-Star Max Battles. Players who manage to defeat the powerful creature will get a chance to capture it.

For those unaware, once a Gigantamax Pokemon is captured, it returns to its regular state. The gigantic form will be triggered once it joins another Max Battle.

Machop CP in Pokemon Go

Machop’s CP in the wild will vary, even more so if it’s boosted by a weather condition. Plus, as with every Raid Boss in the game, the CP Dynamax Machop has during a Max battle won’t be the same once you manage to catch it after defeating it.

Can Machop be Shiny?

Yes, Machop can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this special variation was added to the game during the Battle Showdown event back in 2019. Shiny Shadow Machop and Shiny Dynamax Machop are also available.

Shiny hunters can easily spot Shiny Machop thanks to its distinctive golden color, which differs greatly from the grayish body it usually has.

If a Shiny Machop is evolved, players can get a Shiny Machoke and Shiny Machamp, both with green bodies that make them look like Hulk’s relatives. During Gigantamax Machamp’s debut, lucky players might find Shiny Gigantamax Machamp, which is also green.

It’s worth noting, though, that the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon are very low, as there’s no special technique or method to secure an encounter.

The only thing trainers can do to increase their chances is to hunt as many Machop as they can until they come across what they’re looking for. Remember to take advantage of the Community Day Classic event featuring Machop and the Gigantamax Machamp Max Battle Day to do so.
