Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Review: Prices, Availability, Specs

Fitness for purpose. Take a deftly aimed power tool to all the marketing flim-flam, and you can’t go far wrong with that mantra. There’s no messing around when it comes to a pick-up truck, a vehicle that has a clear job to do, and in most cases does it admirably.

Except that even this segment isn’t immune to mission creep, and these hardy vehicles are now expected to double as workhorse and acceptable all-round family transport. The Ford F-150 may typify the breed, but outside of the US the Ranger has been in active duty for more than 40 years. A global player since 2011, it sells in 180 territories worldwide, and is particularly dominant in the European pick-up market.

But get this, 80 percent of the Rangers sold in the UK last year were in Wildtrak spec, the version that swaddles the hard plastics in leather and ladles on the decals. It’s—deep breath—a genuine lifestyle vehicle, beloved by the sort of buyers who actually do stuff rather than just think about it.

Now, at last, there’s an electrified version, though we’re talking hybrid rather than the whole enchilada. Ford sells the fully electric Lightning in the US, where it’s locked in battle with Tesla’s Cybertruck (though neither is setting the sales chart aflame), but this is the closest Brits are going to get for the foreseeable at least. Only Chinese maker Maxus sells an electric pick-up in the UK, a vehicle we wouldn’t recommend, and Toyota’s indestructible Hi-Lux makes do with a mild hybrid setup. This makes the Ranger PHEV a significant new arrival.

It shares its platform hardware with the VW Amarok, and is manufactured in Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa. Until now, engine options have been limited to a 2.0-liter petrol or 3.0-liter diesel. The new car uses Ford’s excellent 2.3-liter “Ecoboost” turbo petrol unit (as previously seen in the Focus and Mustang), bolstered by a 75-kW (100-bhp) electric motor, packaged within the bell-housing of the 10-speed automatic transmission.

Pick-Up Philosophy

It’s fed by an 11.8-kWh battery (usable) that sits under the Ranger’s load bed. Despite its compact size, that still necessitated modifications to the vehicle’s ladder frame chassis, resulting in a 20-millimeter bulge. (It has a 1-metric-ton payload and can accommodate a Euro pallet between the wheelhouses.) An electronically controlled clutch engages and disengages the e-motor and combustion engine, switching between petrol, hybrid, and electric propulsion. Visual differences are limited to a second filler flap on the near-side rear wing, with a lightning bolt logo on it, which hides the charging port for the battery. On a 7-kW wall charger, it takes about 2.5 hours to charge.

Here’s how it works. EV Auto is the default setting, blending electric and petrol power in a way best suited to everyday use, or if you’re towing or lugging a heavy load. EV Now does what it says: This is for electric driving only, Ford claiming a range of around 26 miles (WLTP). EV Later allows the driver to store electric energy, particularly useful if you’re heading into the city or a zero-emission zone. Finally, there’s EV Charge, which sees the petrol engine charge the high-voltage battery, though it won’t top it up by all that much. In addition to those, the PHEV maintains the driving modes used in extant Ranger models: Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts, and Sand. This new Ranger variant is clearly messing with the sacred strictures of the pick-up philosophy.

Final Fantasy 14’s most controversial third-party plugin used for in-game stalking has been shut down

A controversial third-party plugin used by some Final Fantasy 14 players has been permanently shut down following a cease and desist notice.

A message on the PlayerScope discord (shared on reddit) details the web back-end has been taken offline and all stored data has been “permanently and irreversibly deleted”, while the plugin files have been completely removed from GitHub and GitFlic. “There will be no further updates, support, or development from my side,” said the tool’s creator.

While PlayerScope hasn’t specified where the cease and desist notice has come from, back in January this year Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida shared news Square Enix was considering taking legal action against the creator of a third-party tool.

Eurogamer has contacted Square Enix for clarification.

Yoshida has long warned players against using third-party plugins, which are strictly prohibited in Final Fantasy 14. He’s repeatedly called out players for cheating during Ultimate Raid challenges.

However, the PlayerScope tool in particular has been used for nefarious intentions.

The plugin would allow anyone to search for a Final Fantasy 14 character name to receive that player’s account details, including information of all characters on that account. Player information was also uploaded to a central server combining all data. Essentially, this allowed for in-game harassment and stalking.

In short, as one reddit user put it, the plugin was a “stalker’s wet dream”.

“We strive to offer and maintain a safe environment for our players, which is why we ask everyone to refrain from using third-party tools,” said Yoshida back in January.

In February, Square Enix stated it was making changes to how characters were blacklisted, although third-party tools were able to get around this – something the company admitted was “very problematic”. While it had countermeasures in place, Square Enix did not disclose what those were.

Now, however, PlayerScope has been completely shut down. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was necessary,” said the tool’s creator.

Still, while players have mostly praised the decision, some have concerns the database of player information may still exist elsewhere.

Razer releases AI plugin for game engines to assist with logging bugs and Quality Assurance testing in games

Quality Assurance in games is one of the most underrated parts of game development. These departments usually employ people to go over games with a fine toothed comb making sure everything works correctly. But, due to the ever more complex nature of gaming, this can often be incredibly tedious work, even if you genuinely love the game. This could be an area of game development where AI might actually be helpful, without infringing on creativity. Well Razer certainly thinks so, releasing it’s new AI powered gamdev tool with QA Companion.

The tool sounds super handy, acting as an automatic bug finder and logger. Especially given bug hunting has been one of the smarter uses for AI so far. Razer’s new tool claims to free playtesters up to play the games, rather than having to stop and log every detail themselves. It also boasts the ability to fit into already existing workflows devs likely have, as it’s available as a plugin for Unreal, Unity, and custom engines using C++. It even has custom settings for different genres and styles of games, and all of this can of course be customised to fit whatever the devs are actually working on.

Razer’s QA companion isn’t completely unique, as other companies are also coming up with similar sounding AI testing companions for logging bugs. One example is TestBot from Mighty Build and Test, though this one focusses more on having a bot play your game. Both could be really handy tools to augment the QA process, but it’s important to remember that’s all these are, tools.


You may like

For good quality assurance, you need quality testers. The human element is still incredibly important because there’s information that can be vital that may not be included in these logs. There are also natural human inclinations that are more likely to be acted on and thus more valuable in testing.

I don’t believe any of these tools should be about removing people from testing games, because all you’re going to end up with is games that can be played by robots. While there are plenty of bots to worry about in gaming, I don’t think they’re supposed to be the target audience.

To understand being a QA tester in games, here’s a little thought exercise. Imagine you’re playing your favourite game and you walk through a door. Ok, now go back and do it again but this time do it on an odd second instead of an even one. Ok, again but this time you have a different item equipped. Again, but approach it from a different angle. Good, now keep doing this for eight hours a day. If you’re starting to picture Dr Strange confronting Dormammu then you’re starting to get the idea.

It’s something I didn’t fully appreciate before I spoke to Megan Summers, an Aussie gamedev with a background in QA, several years ago over on Byteside.

“So you know, you’ve got your ground foyer in, you’ve decided where you’re going to put the electricity wires, you’ve decided where the plumbing is going to go in. That’s all the design and technical people.” Explained Summers, adding “And then QA opens every door 10 times to make sure that the door hinges work, but they’re also checking that the paintings are straight and they’ve also got to go and sit on every toilet and flush it 50 times to make sure.”

This is what it can take to help make sure your game doesn’t have any weird bugs that might drastically affect the player. And also why it’s not uncommon for so many bugs to go unfound. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in a day and not all developers have the budget to pour it into GameDev. Having a tool that takes some of the logging work away means you can put more time into finding new ways to open that door, as opposed to writing out the bug details.
