We nearly got a Jaws sequel with a bonkers title and plot

by admin June 20, 2025

Before Jaws: The Revenge killed the shark franchise stone-dead, we nearly got a spoof movie from the director of Gremlins, that had a truly bizarre title and premise.

Jaws turns 50 today, so we’re celebrating the birthday of a film that regularly tops best movie lists – and pretty much invented the summer blockbuster – by recounting the story of a sequel that never was.

Jaws was a phenomenon when it hit screen on June 20, 1975, so-much-so that by the end of the year, it was the most successful film in history.

Jaws 2 followed in 1978, and was also a sizeable hit, meaning talk soon turned to Jaws 3. Which is where the story gets strange.

‘Jaws 3, People 0’ was nearly a movie

Universal Pictures

‘Jaws 3, People 0’ – aka ‘Jaws 3 People Nothing’ – was the brainchild of National Lampoon publisher Matty Simmons, and was planned as a spoof of the original film.

Simmons had an office near Jaws producers Richard Zanuck and David Brooks, who told Matty that they wanted to make a movie with him.

“So out of the blue I just start kidding around,” Simmons explains in the Shudder documentary Sharksploitation. “I just said, ‘Jaws 3, People Nothing.’ I said, [Jaws author] ‘Peter Benchley walks out of his house in a bathing suit, jumps into his pool, and disappears. And the next thing we see a fin floating around in the pool.’ He said, ‘I love it, I love it, I’ll call you tomorrow. We’re going to make this movie.’”

Simmons recruited screenwriters John Hughes and Tod Carroll to flesh out the story, which featured Steven Spielberg, a Quint-like character called Pierre Cockatoo, an homage to the bonfire beach party from the original – where the teens are replaced by Hollywood executives – and a scene in which a bunch of bizarre items are pulled from a shark’s stomach, including some weed.

Gremlins helmer Joe Dante was going to direct

Warner Bros.Joe Dante directing Gremlins.

In 1978, Joe Dante directed Piranha, a comedy-horror that either paid homage to or ripped off Jaws, depending on who you ask.

“Universal was very concerned and annoyed that [producer] Roger [Corman] was putting out his rip-off of Jaws the same year that Jaws 2 was coming out and so they apparently threatened an injunction,” says Dante in the same doc.

“I discovered much later that Spielberg had stepped in and said, ‘No, you don’t get it, this is a spoof, this isn’t really a rip-off.’ Although it is a rip-off. And we basically got away with it, I guess is the phrase. And because of that, I was offered Jaws 3, People 0.”

Dante was interested, but reveals that disagreements about approach, tone, and potential audience ultimately scuppered the project.

Universal Pictures

“The National Lampoon people wanted to make an R-rated comedy, like Animal House,” says Dante. “And the more conservative Zanuck and Brown team wanted to make a PG and have it be a wide-release family picture.”

Which spelled the end, as Dante explains: “You can’t go into a movie with two entities as powerful as National Lampoon was at that time and Zanuck and Brown and have them fighting constantly through the entire movie. It’s just a bad idea, and I think they just pulled the plug.”

So Jaws 3, People 0 remains unproduced, and we got Jaws 3D instead, a true disaster movie that had people laughing at it rather than with it.

The Sharksploitation doc is currently streaming on Shudder, while for more similarly themed action, here’s our review of Dangerous Animals, plus how it was made as a response to Jaws. Plus you can check out our list of the best shark movies ever.

New York Man Denied Bail Over Alleged Bitcoin Ransom, Torture Plot

by admin June 2, 2025

In brief

  • William Duplessie has been indicted on kidnapping, assault, and weapons charges.
  • The victim was allegedly tortured and threatened before escaping barefoot onto Manhattan streets.
  • Co-defendant John Woeltz was previously denied bail; both men remain in custody.

A Manhattan grand jury has indicted one of two men allegedly involved in the high-profile kidnapping and torture case of an Italian crypto investor.

William Duplessie, 32, was formally handed an indictment Friday over his alleged involvement in kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and weapons possession, in a plot to extract Bitcoin from an unnamed victim through weeks of violent coercion, according to an Associated Press report.

Duplessie, along with John Woeltz, 37, are accused of luring the victim to a Soho townhouse on May 6 by threatening to kill the victim’s family.

The two were formally charged last week, with Woeltz being denied bail Thursday after requesting release on a $2 million bond.

At the hearing, Woeltz’s attorney cited their client’s lack of criminal record, philosophy degree, and professional accomplishments, according to a report from the Associated Press.

“He’s been very successful in the technology world,” Wayne Gosnell, Woeltz’s representative, said at the hearing.

Woeltz, who did not appear in court, had “every intention to fight this case,” the attorney told a Manhattan judge.

Duplessie surrendered to Manhattan police on Tuesday last week, while a third individual, Beatrice Folchi, was arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment. Folchi was released pending further investigation.

Duplessie requested a $1 million bail, but was denied due to the severity of the case. Indictments for Duplessie and Woeltz will remain sealed until June 11 for their arraignment.

House of horrors

The victim, identified as a 28-year-old Italian national, was reportedly held captive for 17 days.

Woeltz and Duplessie allegedly tortured the victim with electrical wires, forced the victim to smoke cocaine from a crack pipe, and at one instance, dangled the victim from a five-story high staircase.

The kidnapping took a turn on the morning of May 23. After allegedly being pistol-whipped by Woeltz, the victim thought they’d get shot and pretended to agree to surrender their password, according to a Washington Post report.

While the captors went to retrieve a laptop from another room, the victim was able to rush downstairs and flee to the nearby streets.

Disheveled, bloodied, and barefoot, the victim immediately sought help from a traffic enforcement officer on the corner of Mulberry Street.

Police later searching the townhouse found a saw, cocaine, chicken wire, body armor, night-vision goggles, ballistic helmets, and ammunition.

Also discovered were Polaroid photos of the victim with a gun to their head and shirts showing the victim with a cocaine pipe, according to a description from Assistant District Attorney Michael Mattson, per an ABC News report.

The Manhattan incident is one of several “wrench attacks” that have been growing in an alarming trend. Decrypt has compiled several methods to protect and defend against these violent attacks.

Decrypt has reached out for comments from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, as well as Duplessie and Woeltz’s respective attorneys.

RFK Jr. Poses for Weird Photos With Argentina’s President as They Plot Alternative to World Health Organization

by admin May 28, 2025

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a fringe anti-vaxxer who somehow became head of America’s health agencies under President Donald Trump, met with the president of Argentina and discussed establishing a new alternative to the World Health Organization, according to a tweet from Kennedy on Tuesday. And while the substance of their meeting is important, all anyone can notice on social media is their bizarre photoshoot.

Your eyes don’t deceive you. That’s the Secretary of Health and Human Services holding a chainsaw that belongs to Milei and reads “las fuerzas del cielo” in Portuguese. Translated into English, it means “the forces of heaven.”

Milei, a far-right ally of President Trump, campaigned on promises to deliver austerity to his country and slash government spending, often wielding his chainsaw. And ever since, people who meet with Milei will often hold the chainsaw themselves. Billionaire oligarch Elon Musk waved the chainsaw around earlier this year at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where Musk looked absolutely blitzed out of his mind.

That conference in February, it should be noted, was the same CPAC gathering where two other speakers (including Steve Bannon) did Nazi-style salutes that mimicked Musk’s gestures on Jan. 20.

It’s particularly odd for Kennedy to be posing with a chainsaw, considering he was investigated for using a chainsaw to hack the head off a dead whale two decades ago. Kennedy’s daughter described how the head was strapped to the top of the family car and said that whale juice was streaming down into the open windows. Kennedy called the investigation a weaponization of the government, and it was later dropped.

Kennedy posted other photos from the strange meeting at Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Tuesday, including another where Milei is seated at the head of the table and the chainsaw is in the foreground. Needless to say, the vibes are straight out of The Shining.

In another era, these photos would be mind-boggling and come to define the legacy of the politicians involved. But here in the year 2025, it’s just another day that ends in Y.

What did these guys actually discuss? Apparently the Milei and Trump governments want to create some kind of woo-woo public health body that competes with the World Health Organization. Trump pulled the U.S. out of the WHO on his first day back as the American president on Jan. 20, and and Milei followed suit on Feb. 5.

“I had a wonderful meeting with Argentine President @JMilei about our nations’ mutual withdrawal from the WHO and the creation of an alternative international health system based on gold-standard science and free from totalitarian impulses, corruption, and political control,” Kennedy wrote.

What makes the World Health Organization totalitarian? Kennedy doesn’t get into specifics. But some far-right figures have claimed that WHO colluded with China to hide the “real” origins of the covid-19 pandemic. The Trump regime’s gallery of health-adjacent weirdos insist covid-19 was created in a lab and unleashed upon the world either intentionally or accidentally. Most scientists still believe covid-19 has natural origins.

Kennedy has been busy in recent weeks, firing vital employees of the agencies he runs, including the FDA and CDC, and rolling out new policies. The health secretary was on a podcast Tuesday called “Ultimate Human” where he suggested government scientists would no longer be allowed to publish in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet. Those are, of course, the most prestigious medical journals, but Kennedy called them “corrupt,” according to Politico.

Kennedy would instead like American scientists to publish their work in “in-house” journals. As luck would have it, FDA head Marty Makary and NIH director Jay Bhattacharya recently launched their own medical journal called the Journal of the Academy of Public Health. Science magazine called the journal’s editorial policies “unusual,” and real scientists have noted the journal seems to be comprised of “a small clique of contrarians around the COVID pandemic.”

Plot perfect routes for your deliveries in Roadcraft.

|

Published: May 26, 2025 07:22 pm

Roadcraft, the latest title from Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment, features a setting where you have to restore natural disaster-struck regions using construction machinery, vehicles, and much more. Given that the regions have been struck by various kinds of natural calamities, the terrain is extremely chaotic and disrupted, requiring you to be very cautious with your planning.

One of the most important tasks in the game is to plot routes between two locations for your vehicles to carry resources for the restoration. With most of the traditional roadways being destroyed by natural disasters, you will need to be sure about the terrain, turns, and obstacles on the routes that you plot, even if you have to scout them beforehand.

Here’s everything you need to know about plotting routes in Roadcraft.

How to plot a delivery route between two locations in Roadcraft

This is the first time you will be able to plot a route in Roadcraft. Image via Saber Interactive

The first time you will get to plot a route in Roadcraft is between your Forward Base to a Phosphate Plant. From there, there will be plenty of occasions further in the game where you will have to plot more routes. Additionally, you will have to make sure that none of your routes collide with each other as your network of deliveries starts to grow.

You can set up your routes by accessing the Route Infrastructure tab from the in-game map. All you have to do is click on the Start Plotting option and set up your routes as needed. However, you need to keep a few points in mind while setting up your routes to ensure that you don’t run into any problems:

  • Make sure to scout the route before setting it up to ensure that your trucks can make it through without running into any unpassable terrain or obstacles.
  • Avoid setting sharp turns as those are impossible for trucks. You will need wider angles to ensure that your trucks can turn smoothly.
  • It is always better to follow road lines when setting up your routes. Inaccessible regions will make it difficult for your trucks to reach and pass through.
  • Make sure that you don’t leave any of your vehicles on the road blocking the trucks.

Even if you run into any trouble after following these steps, there are quite a few ways to work around it. Apart from rerouting the path, you can also drive down there yourself to check out the problem and take action accordingly. You can rework the terrain and build a road if the terrain is ruined, or remove obstacles blocking the route.

You might also run into problems with your routes running into each other and causing a traffic issue. You can use alternate pathing using other entrances, like the southern gate of the Phosphate Plant, to plot paths without having them converge with each other.

Building successful routes will grant you EXP and a cash prize initially, while also providing bonus rewards passively as your trucks keep driving along the route. However, you must be aware of environmental changes, as recurring natural disasters could cause your already set-up routes to get disrupted. Make sure to keep an eye out for any failure messages that might appear unexpectedly.
