PlayStation 5 prices are going up, too, just like Xbox

PlayStation 5 prices are going up, too, just like Xbox

by admin August 21, 2025

The moment many feared would come following Xbox’s recent, wide-ranging price hikes of its consoles and games has arrived – Sony has officially announced that it’s raising the price of the PlayStation 5 console in the US.

The platform holder revealed the new prices on Wednesday, which go in effect today, August 21.

All PlayStation 5 console models are going up by $50. Here are the new prices:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99.
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99.
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99.

PlayStation, of course, technically had its own set of price hikes recently, having raised the price of the PS5 console in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand just this past April. However, Sony has always been cautious not raise prices in the United States, as it’s the market where it has the biggest competition in Xbox.

In 2022, two years after this current generation of consoles launched, Sony raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in Canada, Mexico, UK, Europe, Australia, China, and Japan. The United States has always been spared when it came to these price hikes.

However, with Xbox now raising prices in the US, Sony has likely been emboldened to do the same – even if it took a while for it to get there.

It also doesn’t help that tariffs on goods imported from China and various other manufacturing centres in Asia, which the US has recently imposed, have themselves raised the cost of each unit. As it’s often the case, companies will then pass that added cost on to the consumer.

Imagine the idea of a more expensive PS5! | Image credit: VG247

Even though the tariffs imposed by the US government are meant to influence the country’s relationship with its trade partners, they’ve had wide-reaching effects beyond the borders of the United States. Japanese companies, for instance, had their stocks quickly tumble after the initial tariffs were announced in April, and Nintendo had to delay the Switch 2 pre-orders in the US and Canada very quickly after the console was announced.

Even setting aside the impact of tariffs, this is all highly unprecedented. Consoles typically go down in price the deeper into their respective generations they get. The idea that consoles, which launched five years ago, haven’t dropped in price, but have in fact became more expensive, does not bode well for the growth prospects of the industry.

Sony Is Raising The Price Of Every PlayStation 5 Model Tomorrow, August 21

by admin August 20, 2025

Rising video game and console prices have frustrated consumers this year, and today, Sony is adding its flagship console to the list of products getting price hikes. In the United States, the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro are each increasing in price by $50.

According to a blog post from Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, the change is due to “a challenging economic environment.” This brings the new prices for each device to the following:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

As of today, prices remain unchanged in other countries, but many of them faced price hikes earlier this year. This news comes a few months after Sony said it was considering raising its prices in the US, but it might not affect consoles. That was, obviously, not the case. Other instances of companies increasing prices lately include Nintendo increasing Switch 2 accessory prices, and Xbox raising its console and game prices back in May. Across the board, it’s a rough time to be paying for new games and hardware.

Meanwhile, Xbox announced its new handheld’s release date today, but won’t reveal its price quite yet, citing “macro-economic conditions.”

Eight games, including an overlooked Metroidvania, will leave PlayStation Plus in September

by admin August 19, 2025

The games set to leave PlayStation Plus Extra in September have been revealed. The eight titles include some very good games, so you might want to make some time before 16th September to get them played.

As these games are part of the Game Catalogue and not the monthly games that you claim as part of PS Plus Essential, these games will no longer be playable from 16th September even if they are in your library.

Leaving PS Plus Extra on 16th September:

  • UFC 5 (PS5)
  • The Plucky Squire (PS5)
  • Night in the Woods (PS5, PS4)
  • Road 96 (PS5, PS4)
  • Pistol Whip (PSVR2)
  • Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (PS4)
  • FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch (PS5, PS4)
  • Dragon’s Crown Pro (PS4)

Of the bunch, I’d certainly recommend FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch, especially if you are partial to a Metroidvania. Pistol Whip is superb if you have PS VR2, and the Plucky Squire is definitely worth a look even though it didn’t quite live up to pre-launch expectations. Night in the Woods is also excellent.

In fact, why stop there… Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir and Dragon’s Crown Pro are also very good games. So, really, what I’m saying is, don’t rush to play UFC 5 (which is fine, but just more UFC) or Road 96 (didn’t enjoy the writing on this, unfortunately), but all the others are worth your time.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Cult favourite PC and PlayStation game, Shenmue 3, is being reworked for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

by admin August 18, 2025

Shenmue 3 is coming back, with Yu Suzuki and publisher ININ Games announcing the Enhanced edition. The reworked and tweaked version of the 2020 game will be arriving on PS5 and PC as before, but also hitting Xbox and Nintendo consoles (TBC, but I think it’s probably safe to say that’ll be Switch 2 rather than the original Switch).

As well as improved visuals and image scaling support, there’ll be increased NPC density, a Classic Camera mode, tweaks to health and progression, expanded QTE windows, and more.

Key Enhancements:

  • Enhanced Graphics & Performance – Sharper textures, richer details, faster load times, and smoother gameplay.
  • 4K Texture Uplift – Refined, more detailed environments and characters.
  • DLSS/FSR Support – High-quality upscaling without sacrificing performance (supported platforms only).
  • Increased NPC Density – The city village Niaowu feels more alive with more characters populating the streets.
  • Classic Camera Mode – An optional camera perspective inspired by Shenmue I & II, alongside the modern view.
  • Gameplay Tweaks – Optional stamina system adjustments, health restoration before fights, and reduced money barriers for smoother progression.
  • Improved Interactions – Cutscene and conversation skip options, expanded QTE timing window for more accessible gameplay.
  • Menu & UX Enhancements – Streamlined navigation and helpful purchase alerts.
  • Optionality First – All major changes can be toggled to preserve the original experience for purists.

Step back into Ryo Hazuki’s world, which is now more vibrant, more responsive, and more accessible than ever, guided by Yu Suzuki’s vision.

ININ Games has said that owners of the original Shenmue III on PS4 and PC will be able to upgrade to the new Enhanced Edition, but more details on how that will work are coming at a later date. Expect the full reveal of Shenmue 3 Enhanced Edition at Gamescom this week.

Sony really won't be putting new first party games on PlayStation Plus day one any time soon

Sony really won’t be putting new first party games on PlayStation Plus day one any time soon

by admin June 25, 2025

Sony is sticking to its guns, and won’t be releasing its first party games day one on its PlayStation Plus subscription service.

Speaking with GameFile, vice president of global services at PlayStation Nick Maguire said the company was “not looking to put games in day and date” on PS Plus, and will instead stick with its current way of doing things.

This is, of course, very different from Xbox, which often puts big first party releases such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and many more on Game Pass from the get go.

FBC: Firebreak Preview – How Does It Play And Is It Good? Watch on YouTube

Sony, meanwhile, has added some third party games like the excellent Blue Prince and Stray to PS Plus on the same day as their initial launch. But the likes of God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West – both from Sony’s first party studios – weren’t added to the service until around a year after their initial release.

“Our strategy of finding four or five independent day-and-date titles – and using that to complement our strategy of bringing games in when they’re 12, 18 months old or older – that balance for us is working really well across the platform,” Maguire continued, before adding:

“If there were six or seven great opportunities, then we would go for them as well.”

When asked if the company had considered the benefit of putting its own first party live-service titles on PS Plus, with Concord – the debut game from Sony’s FireWalk Studios, which was taken offline just two weeks after its PS5 and PC debut – being used as an example, Maguire declined to give a specific comment. The Sony exec did say, however, that PS Plus has “proven itself to be a great way to introduce new players to franchises” when they arrive on the service.

“There’s always going to be a moment for any game where there’s the right time for it to go into Plus, when it’s ready to reach a wider audience or… to find new fans or new parts of our platform that it hasn’t already reached,” Maguire said.

This month, Remedy’s multiplayer Control spin-off FBC: Firebreak was available to all those on PlayStation Plus’ Extra and Premium tiers day one. However, even when included on a subscription service, some live-service games still flop. Square Enix’s Foamstars, for example, failed to set the world alight despite being part of the PS Plus catalogue.

Today’s comments echo what the exec stated back in 2023, when Maguire said putting games on to Sony’s subscription service “a bit later in the life cycle” is working for the company. Therefore, this will “continue to be [its] strategy moving forward,” Maguire said at the time.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, Sony president Hideaki Nishino stated the company is open to adjusting the price of PlayStation Plus in the future, as it aims to “maximise profitability”.

Stellar Blade proves there’s appetite for PlayStation 5 games on PC, as it blasts past one million sales in three days

by admin June 16, 2025

Stellar Blade has sold more than one million copies on PC within three days of its arrival to the platform, according to Ruliweb.

Stellar Blade would also pass the three million sales milestone across all platforms following its PC release. As of writing, the game reached a peak concurrent player count on Steam of 192,078, a substantial increase over the weekend from its initial peak of just under 100,000 in its first day.

This performance marks an all-time record for South Korean single players games, a style of game that ShiftUp has been championing since releasing Stellar Blade in April of last year.

Watch the Stellar Blade PC launch trailer here!Watch on YouTube

According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad at Niko Partners, a majority of these PC sales stem from China, a playerbase who’d benefit from a PC-only Chinese dub and appropriate regional pricing. This market has proven an exceptionally eager one, both with Stellar Blade and Black Myth Wukong’s own record breaking Steam release last year.

This stunning PC release comes shortly after Sony execs spoke about bringing its games to different platforms in an annual fireside chat. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Hideaki Nishino and Studio Business Group head Hermen Hulst when asked about how to “protect the value” of the PlayStation console noted that Sony’s consoles would remain “the best place to play and publish”, but that “the team is always looking for “new and innovative ways to broaden [its] reach”.

ShiftUp announced back in May in an investor presentation that a sequel to Stellar Blade was being developed. The only tidbit of information aside from the confirmation present there was that the game was scheduled to be released before 2027.

PlayStation Boss Reacts To Microsoft’s Pivot To Multiplatform Releases

by admin June 16, 2025

Microsoft is shaking things up with its new strategy of launching its own games on rival platforms, and now Sony has reacted to Microsoft’s latest moves. As part of an investor fireside chat, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino was asked to respond to speculation from investors that Microsoft is “moving away from the console.”

To be clear, Microsoft has made no announcements about moving away from building hardware, and in fact, the company has already said it’s working on its next console. In any event, Nishino responded by saying Microsoft trying something new and creating an additional competitive element in the gaming landscape by launching more of its games on rival systems is “healthy and pushes us to innovate.”

“There are multiple participants who together drive the overall game industry, and while there are new engagement models being explored, we ultimately think this is a good thing,” he said. “However, as I mentioned earlier, we are confident and committed on our current strategy, and there isn’t an urgent need for us to pivot. We will continue to monitor play patterns and invest appropriately as required.”

The next big Xbox game to come to PlayStation is Gears of War Reloaded, which debuts in August, representing the first time the Gears franchise will be available outside of Xbox and PC. Microsoft recently launched Doom: The Dark Ages on PlayStation, and the company’s biggest series, Call of Duty, is developed for both Xbox and PlayStation systems.

Microsoft’s Xbox platform is understood to be the lowest-selling of the main three when compared against Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo’s Switch devices. Microsoft is no longer pushing Xbox hardware as much as it once was, as it’s rolled out a new marketing campaign saying you don’t need to buy an Xbox because many of the products you may already own can play Xbox games.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said Xbox’s goal is to increase the number of people playing on Xbox, but “playing on Xbox” doesn’t mean a dedicated Xbox console. “It means somebody who is logging in and playing a part of our ecosystem, whether first-party or third-party. And it could be on an Android phone. It could be on a Switch. It could be on a PC. That’s how we think about it,” he said.

Game consoles make money, but games and services are more lucrative. This is why Microsoft is pushing Xbox Game Pass so hard. Creating more subscribers gives Microsoft a regular and recurring revenue stream. Bringing Xbox games to PlayStation and Nintendo devices is another way Microsoft can make more money as well.

Spencer has time and again repeated his comments that Xbox is a business, and his job is to grow that business, even if it means laying people off, closing studios, and cancelling games.

Also during the presentation, Sony management briefly discussed the PlayStation 6 and responded to the record-breaking launch of the Switch 2. Sony also discussed its strategy for PC releases.

Sony Hints At PlayStation Plus Price Increase After Highest Tiers Attract More Players

by admin June 15, 2025

Sony has shared a new report with investors that touts PlayStation 5’s marketplace gains and the continued expansion of PlayStation Plus’ subscriber base. The latter has been so successful at adding users to the highest subscription tiers that Sony is already considering a price increase for PS Plus “to maximize profitability.”

Following the release of the report online, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino appeared on a fireside chat and spelled out that the only direction for PlayStation Plus pricing is up.

“The PlayStation Plus service offers great value for our players, and we will continue to add more value and adjust our pricing strategy in a dynamic way to maximize profitability,” said Nishino.

Currently, PS Plus’s Premium tier costs $160 per year in the US, while the Extra costs $135 and the Essential costs $80.

Nishino’s statement came after Sony’s presentation indicated that 38% of all PlayStation Plus subscribers opted for the top two tiers, Premium and Extra. Furthermore, the percentage of PS Plus subscribers on the Extra tier increased from 16% to 22% from Sony’s 2022 fiscal year to its 2024 fiscal year. In that same period, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers rose from 13% to 17% of all PS Plus users.

Nishino noted that Sony would “add more value” to PS Plus subscriptions to justify increasing the price. It’s unclear exactly what that might entail, especially since Sony has steered away from following Game Pass’ path of dropping AAA games on the service on day one.

As recently as last April, Sony raised PS Plus prices in several countries, while sparing the US from any immediate increase. Players in North America may not be so lucky next time.

Helldivers 2, Spider-Man 2, and more PlayStation titles have been freed from their region lock prison on PC

by admin June 15, 2025

Sony have been making a lot of mistakes over the past couple of years, including things like mistakenly thinking they could release 12 live service games by 2026, but the more immediately annoying one is its whole PSN thing. I probably don’t need to remind you of that whole Helldivers 2 fiasco, where they tried to make logging into a PSN a requirement for those on PC and later scrapped this because it went down horrendously. However, there has been one other snag that came with all this PSN nonsense: region locking.

Despite being able to play Helldivers 2 without a PSN account, it was still unavailable in almost 180 countries, all of which you can’t make a PSN account in (it’s still possible to play the game with an account connected, which will likely have factored into the reasoning behind region locking the game). This has applied to Sony’s other PC ports of their PlayStation published games, except now, as shared by deals wizard Wario64, it seems a handful of them are now (mostly) region lock free.

Sony appears to be removing regional restrictions on their Steam/PC games

There are four total, including the aforementioned Helldivers 2, as well as God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Spider-Man 2. Worth keeping in mind that these are all games that had their PSN requirements lifted earlier this year. From what I can tell there haven’t been any changes made to other PlayStation games based on their logs on SteamDB, but I’m also not entirely sure which games were and weren’t region locked, so your mileage may vary with their wider portfolio.

It’s a good move forward at least! Certainly seems like PlayStation are just shooting themselves in the foot by limiting where their games can actually be bought. Now the big question is whether or not their next big game (that isn’t Marathon) on PC will have a PSN requirement at all.
