New PlayStation 6 tech all but confirmed by Sony and AMD – and it looks like it’ll make its way into other hardware too

by admin October 9, 2025

Sony and AMD just announced three key technologies that look likely to come to the PlayStation 6 and future AMD graphics cards, with PS5 system architect Mark Cerny and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh teaming up to deliver the news. The talk is fairly technical, but the three core features – Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression – look set to make a big impact on future AMD-based hardware. The main goal is speeding up computionally-expensive ray tracing and path tracing in some novel ways, as well as reducing the cost of the upscaling and denoising techniques they rely on.

Let’s start with Neural Arrays. In short, this is a new arrangement of the dozens of Compute Units (CUs) that make up a graphics processor like that in the PS5 Pro. Normally each of these CUs work alone on a bite-sized piece of the puzzle, which makes sense for most tasks, but can be inefficient for upscaling techniques like FSR or PSSR. Neural Arrays therefore link multiple CUs together in a “smart, efficient way”, like a “single, focused AI engine”.

The benefit is that this ought to allow for bigger (and therefore higher quality) machine learning models, with less overhead and better scalability. To say it another way, it means that an upscaling algorithm like PSSR ought to run faster at a given quality level, or accomplish more in a given time frame. The same speed-up also applies to denoising algorithms, which are important for ray-traced or path-traced graphics.

Here’s the full announcement. Watch on YouTube

Huynh also promises that Neural Arrays will allow for new features, including “dedicated innovations that bring cinematic rendering to an entirely new level.”

Radiance Cores are the second new technology, and they’re firmly a hardware change. Essentially, this is a new dedicated hardware block in next-generation AMD graphics processors that’s “designed for unified light transport”, ie ray tracing and path tracing. In the PC space, Nvidia has long held a ray tracing performance advantage thanks to its RT cores, and it looks like finally AMD is adopting a similar strategy.

Just as other dedicated hardware we’ve seen appear in graphics cards over the years, such as those that deal with media encoding or AI processing, Radiance Cores accomplish their given task faster than doing the same thing on more generic hardware. This speeds up the intensive work of ray traversal – “digging through complex data structures to locate where the millions of rays being cast hit the millions of triangles in the scene geometry”.

As well as the speed-up from having dedicated hardware, this change also unburdens the CPU and the rest of the GPU – so that they can perform the things they’re best suited for, such as simulation and geometry on the CPU and shading and lighting on the GPU.

Neural Arrays link up Compute Units in the GPU into larger groups to work on upscaling or denoising more efficiently.

Radiance Cores include dedicated hardware for every part of ray traversal, speeding up processing and reducing load elsewhere in the GPU and CPU.

The final bit of tech Sony and AMD announced is called Universal Compression, and thankfully it’s a bit easier to explain. In short, it’s a system that compresses everything that goes out to GPU memory, rather than just a few data types like textures, as is currently the case on the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Again, this is along similar lines to an existing Nvidia technology, in this case Neural Texture Compression.

By adding this compression step, effective GPU memory bandwidth is much higher. That means frame-rates might increase if you’re bandwidth-limited, but more importantly it allows for higher-quality assets and reduces power consumption too. This technique has broad positive implications, but it also specifically helps make both Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores more effective.

These technologies currently exist only in simulation, according to Cerny, but clearly both parties are confident enough to detail them at this early stage. Huynh also mentions that AMD is aiming to bring the technologies to developers “across every gaming platform”, which would follow in the company’s general approach of open-sourcing its graphics innovations.

Universal Compression is a more extreme version of the Delta Color Compression used on the PS5 and PS5 Pro, which compresses all data sent to graphics memory. | Image credit: Sony

It will be fascinating to see how these technologies work when they start to be realised in real hardware, and given the Project Amethyst partnership thus far, it seems reasonable to assume that the two companies will make further announcements over the next few years as the tech gets closer to completion – and when the expected PlayStation 6 is officially announced.

Beyond the rumoured PlayStation 6, we could also see these approaches being used in a PlayStation or Windows-based gaming handheld. Power consumption and memory bandwidth limitations are key challenges for any mobile form factor, so no doubt the likes of Valve, Asus and Lenovo would be mighty interested in any significant advancements. Valve has famously said that they’re waiting for a “generational leap” to justify a Steam Deck 2, and this might just qualify.

Similarly, this is huge news for fans of AMD desktop graphics cards, which have traditionally offered great price to performance in rasterised games and plenty of VRAM, but have fallen behind Nvidia alternatives in terms of RT performance and other features. AMD could massively close the gap here, and that’s an exciting prospect.

Either way, I’m happy to see Sony and AMD share the fruits of their partnership so openly, and it’s certainly food for thought when it comes to seeing how Sony, AMD and other tech giants are looking to circumvent the rise in silicon costs that has prevented faster, cheaper models from arriving this console generation.

Eurogamer’s 2023 game of the year leaves Game Pass, but joins PlayStation Plus

by admin October 2, 2025

Cocoon – Eurogamer’s 2023 Game of the Year – is leaving Game Pass soon. Thankfully, for those with a PlayStation, it’ll be headed to PlayStation Plus later this month.

It’s departing Microsoft’s gaming subscription service alongside Donut County, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed, and Core Keeper.

As for its newfound peers coming to PlayStation Plus, Cocoon will be hanging joining the service alongside Goat Simulator 3 and Alan Wake 2 across all tiers. It’s be available to download on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Watch the Cocoon launch trailer here!Watch on YouTube

Those feeling smug on the PlayStation side of the aisle should still keep a swivel on, as Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley, and Viewfinder will soon be leaving the monthly game line-up. Users will have until 6th October to grab ’em before they are no longer offered up as part of the monthly package.

Only yesterday Game Pass had its price hiked up to $30 a month for its ultimate tier, in spite of record breaking subscription revenue last year. This’ll come with a shaken up rewards program, with users no longer able to directly redeem Rewards points for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. This follows a price increase for Xbox hardware back in September.

In our 2023 Game of the Year feature dedicated to Cocoon, Eurogamer staff wrote: “Cocoon. Of course it’s our game of the year. Cocoon is ingenious, elegant, and thought-provoking. It’s precise, expressive, and generous. It takes game design forward even as it seems to emerge from its deep history. But more than anything, Cocoon is playful. Its puzzles, its tricks, all yield to playfulness.”

Sony Celebrates 30 Years Of PlayStation With Cool Book

by admin September 29, 2025

PlayStation is turning 30 this year. That’s, uh, a lot of years. Well, what better way to sit around reminiscing about the past than to flip through a lovely coffee-table book chronicling the last three decades of PlayStation hardware? You’ll have to wait until spring of next year to do so, and it’ll cost you a pretty penny, but if you love the history of product and hardware development and appreciate a good photography book, Sony and publisher Read-Only Memory have something in store for you.

In a blog post celebrating the 30-year mark, Sony showed off some images of its gorgeous-looking photography book PlayStation: The First 30 Years. It comes in two hardcover editions at 400 pages each, and documents various prototype concepts of gamepads, consoles, logo design sketches, and more. The standard edition goes for $125, while a limited run of 1994 (the year the first PlayStation shipped in Japan) deluxe-edition copies encased in a foil-stamped box and featuring other goodies will also be produced.

Even if you think you’ve seen every conceivable prototype or concept for the PlayStation brand, there might still be some surprises in these pages for you yet. I mean, take a look at this thing!

Now no one can tell me that the boomerang controller concept from the PS3 was the most uncomfortable-looking idea from Sony. And speaking of that thing, I sure hope there are more photos of it in these pages.

Seagate 2TB Hard Drive for PlayStation Returns to Nearly Free Per TB Pricing as Amazon Blows Out Remaining Stock

by admin September 28, 2025

As much as we all like to joke that “the PS5 has no games,” that’s simply not true. Mine has plenty of PS4 games on it! Ba-dum-tiss. Anyway, there are some awesome PlayStation 5 exclusives. The amazing and cute platformer Astro Bot won Game of the Year last year. Ghost of Yōtei is dropping in under a week. Plus people are still sleeping on 2021’s incredible third-person shooter roguelike Returnal. And then yes of course there really are a bunch of good PS4 games to check if you missed them last generation. A lot of them have great-looking updates too like everything going on with The Last of Us remakes and remasters. Point is there are lots of good games to play, but do you have enough storage space for all of them?

Expand you PS5 storage with the help of Seagate’s officially-licensed game drive for PlayStation consoles. This external hard drive connect to your system over USB 3.2 and will  let you boost your capacity to store games by a full 2TB. Right now, Amazon has the drive discounted down from $90 to just $80. A $10 savings may not sound like much, but that’s already halfway to getting you Hollow Knight: Silksong.

See at Amazon

The PS5 base model only comes with 800GB of internal space (1TB on the Slim), and some of that isn’t even usable to you as it’s got all the system stuff on it that makes the console work. Really you’re working with roughly. The base model really has about 667GB while the Slim has a bout 842.2GB for you to work with, saving your games. This Seagate drive will more than triple your ability to store your game data. nor more deleting and redownloading.

One Small Caveat

There is a catch though. You can’t actually play you games off this external drive. The PS5 requires much faster read/write speeds than this supports. You might be thinking, “Okay, then what the heck is the point?” Well, this drive is still helpful because you can move you games from it to your internal drive when you want to play them. This is a much, much faster process than redownloading a game over the internet. Think of it like the digital version of taking your disc off the shelf and popping it into your console. The good news is you can play your PS4 games directly off of it.

Unlike the internal SSDs available to expand your PS5 storage, this drive requires no tools to install as it just connects over USB. That makes it totally portable so you can bring it over to a friend’s house and fire it up on their PS5 if you wish. Have your whole gaming library on the go.

The Gathering Is Making PlayStation Cards, And They Look Great

by admin September 26, 2025

Magic: The Gathering has become the Fortnite of trading card games, and as annoying as I find the practice of constantly dumping different IPs together, even God’s strongest soldiers are not immune to propaganda. At MagicCon Atlanta, Wizards of the Coast and Sony announced that PlayStation series are getting seven different Secret Lair drops for various games, and folks, I want those Last of Us cards.

On October 27, Wizards of the Coast will be selling seven PlayStation sets, with most of them covering different franchises in the console maker’s catalog. However, both The Last of Us and God of War are getting two sets. The former will have a pair of cards for both the first game and its sequel, while the latter will cover both the original Greek storyline and the reboot’s Norse one. With the exception of the Last of Us and God of War sets, most of these drops just seem to feature one card with their respective games’ protagonists. The set will drop at 9 a.m. Pacific Time that Monday.

The full line-up includes:

  • The Last of Us Part I
  • The Last of Us Part II
  • Uncharted
  • God of War: Greek
  • God of War: Norse
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Ghost of Tsushima

Though it’s not surprising that Sony would want to spotlight its current stable of prestige action games, I’m bummed there’s not more classic PlayStation representation here. Give me Parappa the Rapper, you cowards. But that’s pretty par for the course these days with Sony. Even its upcoming concert series is leaning heavily into its new stuff.

I don’t play Magic, but I did buy the Sonic cards they put out earlier this year just to get the Shadow the Hedgehog one. He’s sitting pretty on my shelf, so I guess I’ll also buy the Last of Us ones next month, to keep him company. You know, as long as they don’t sell out before it’s my turn in the queue.

Forza Horizon 6 will come to PlayStation 5, but not immediately

Forza Horizon 6 will come to PlayStation 5, but not immediately

by admin September 26, 2025

Forza Horizon 5 set a historic precedent earlier this year when it was released on PlayStation 5. It marked the first time Microsoft’s exclusive Xbox racing brand had appeared on a Sony machine – historically a rival in the console space. It was a landmark moment in Microsoft’s pivot to Xbox being more of a software company than a hardware-restricted one.

This move meant that when Forza Horizon 6 was announced this morning, with a Japanese setting and a 2026 release date, one of the biggest questions was: which platforms will it be released on? Will it be a PlayStation 5 game and if so, when will it be released – at the same time?

Today’s Forza Horizon 6 teaser.Watch on YouTube

Now, we partially know the answer. Yes, Forza Horizon 6 will be a PlayStation 5 game, but no, it won’t be released at the same time. A Forza Horizon 6 announcement post on Xbox News Wire reveals, in an endnote, that: “Forza Horizon 6 will launch first on Xbox consoles and PC in 2026.” And then: “Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios are also working together to bring Forza Horizon 6 to PlayStation 5 post-launch.”

A period of exclusivity makes sense, of course – why concede every advantage? It’s also worth underlining that Forza Horizon 6 will be a day-one Game Pass game as all Microsoft Studios games are. The question now becomes how long will PlayStation owners have to wait? Six months, a year, more? And in that wait, will we glimpse a plan Microsoft intends to return to as it brings more internally developed games to other consoles? This is new ground we’re breaking, remember.

We’re promised more information on Forza Horizon 6 in the spring next year.

Everything We Saw At Today’s PlayStation State Of Play Showcase

by admin September 25, 2025

PlayStation and friends put together a thankfully brief State of Play presentation that streamed on the company’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Ahead of the show, we knew we’d be seeing more of Housemarque’s new Rahul Kohli-led action game Saros, but we didn’t know what would take up the other 30 minutes of the 35-minute showcase. If you didn’t get a chance to watch live, you can watch the VOD here, or scroll down to get all the highlights.

Saros

Saros kicked off the show with a new gameplay trailer showcasing its fast-paced, momentum-driven shooter mechanics. Kohli’s character has a ton of mobility options to jump and zip around the battlefield, shooting and stabbing a wide spread of vicious beasties. There’s some gesturing at the story here, but all I can really gather is that the main character is searching for a woman in this alien hellscape. The game is coming to PS5 on March 20, 2026.

Zero Parades for Dead Spies

Next up is Zero Parades, ZA/UM’s follow-up to Disco Elysium. The game was originally announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but was only confirmed for PC at the time. So now we know it’s coming to PS5.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

First thing I had to do was make sure that there wasn’t a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2025 and that Microsoft wasn’t deliberately giving PlayStation an out-of-date version of its flight sim. That would have been funny in a petty kind of way. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is coming to PS5 on December 8.

Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 is just a couple of weeks away from its October 10 release date, so it makes sense Sony and EA would want to get the game in front of people in one more showcase. A lot of the leadup to launch has focused on the multiplayer, so it’s good that we got a quick glimpse of its dramatic campaign here.

Deus Ex Remastered

One of the first real surprises of the show was Deus Ex Remastered, a revamped version of the beloved RPG. The original Deus Ex is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and to celebrate, Eidos Montreal and Aspyr are sprucing up the game for modern platforms. The remaster is coming to PlayStation 5 on February 5.

Halloween

We also got a new look at the asymmetrical Dead by Daylight-like Halloween game, though it won’t be out by the holiday. The game is set to launch on PS5 on September 8, 2026.

Last Epoch

Next up we got confirmation that dungeon-crawling RPG Last Epoch is leaving PC exclusivity behind and coming to PS5. The game’s first expansion, Orobyss, will also launch the same day the game hits the console.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origins is an upcoming open-world game based on the anime of the same name. It’s coming to PS5 on January 28.

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds

After leaking ahead of time, Sega announced the Mega Man DLC characters coming to Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. Mega Man and Proto Man will be added to the roster alongside a Dr. Wily’s Castle-themed track next year.

Nioh 3

Koei Tecmo grabbed the mic for two back-to-back announcements. First, the company showed off a new look at Nioh 3 and announced the action game will come to PS5 on February 6. This was followed by the announcement that a Dynasty Warriors 3 remaster is coming. Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered will hit PS5 on March 19.

Code Vein II

Bandai Namco showed a new trailer for it’s upcoming action RPG Code Vein II, because who doesn’t want another soulslike in their backlog? The game will launch on PS5 on January 30.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Square Enix showed up to remind you that Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is imminent. But who needs a new trailer when you can read Kotaku‘s review? The game is coming to PS4 and PS5 on September 30.

Let It Die: Inferno

Another fun surprise in the showcase was Let It Die: Inferno, a sequel to the cult classic action game from Grasshopper Manufacture. That’s refreshing given the only follow-up we got previously was a battle royale game back in 2022. Inferno is coming to PS5 on December 3.

Chronoscript: The Endless End

Next up is Chronoscript: The Endless End, a sidescrolling action platformer about a man that is trapped within the pages of books. The game will launch on PS5 next year.

Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert, one of the only games to make me crash out at a preview event, was given a new trailer that included a release date. The action game will come to PS5 on March 19.

Pulse speakers

If you’re in the market for new home theater speakers, Pulse is releasing PlayStation-branded ones that are compatible with your PS5, PC, Mac, and even your PlayStation Portal. They’ll be available in black or white next year.

PlayStation Plus

Next we got a brief check-in on the games coming to PlayStation Plus soon. In addition to those mentioned in the trailer above, they will also include The Last of Us Part II Remastered for The Last of Us Day, the annual celebration of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic series, which lands on Friday of this week.

Gran Turismo 7

For the racing sim fans in the room, we got a new announcement for Gran Turismo 7. The racing game’s Spec III update is coming in December, and it will include two new tracks, eight vehicles, a data logging feature and “much more.”

God of War anniversary controller

Sony announced a limited edition DualSense controller to celebrate God of War‘s 20th anniversary. It is mostly white, but includes the red streak Kratos has on his face on the righthand side.

Wolverine

Wrapping up the show was the first officially sanctioned gameplay of Marvel’s Wolverine, the next superhero game from Insomniac, who also developed the acclaimed Spider-Man games on PS4 and PS5. The trailer is action packed, has some cameos from other X-Men characters like the transforming mutant Mystique and some of the mutant-hunting Sentinels, and looks pretty friggin’ dope. Spartacus actor Liam McIntyre will play the titular hero when Wolverine comes to PS5 in 2026.

The Disco Elysium studio reveals stylish gameplay from its next title.

ZERO PARADES – For Dead Spies is a narrative-first espionage RPG steeped in paranoia, surrealism, and a struggle for redemption. You play as Hershel, a brilliant yet unfortunate operant in a world where trust is scarce, betrayal is just around every corner, and failure is inevitable.

Four years later, PlayStation and Insomniac gives Marvel’s Wolverine a 2026 release window, debuts trailer full of blood, brutality, and blades

by admin September 24, 2025

Other than that brief teaser from 2021, any official word on Insomniac’s Wolverine has been slimmer than an adamantium claw blade. But today – finally! – at Sony’s State of Play livestream, the developer has kicked down the door, made that trademark ‘snikt’ sound, and shown us an uber-violent trailer and behind-the-scenes video chronicling the development of the game so far.

We’ve also got a release window: Fall 2026.

The trailer, and the behind-the-scenes footage, confirms that this will be a project that takes in a lot of Wolverine’s history: we’ve seen proof of life of important locations to him like Japan, Madripoor, and the American North, whilst key characters in his history like Omega Red and Mystique have thus far been confirmed. Will we see more X-Men – Jean Grey or Cyclops? – or maybe even some external team-ups (Colossus, Hulk, and Cable come to mind…)

Check out the videos below.

“Become a living weapon,” reads a blurb. “As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be.”

Here’s some more info about how Insomniac is bringing Logan to life, per the PS Blog:

Bold, resilient, and volatile, Wolverine is a character that all of us at Insomniac are thrilled to explore in collaboration with our friends at Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Like our Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, we’re once again combining our super powers to deliver an original take on a beloved character based on Marvel Comics.

Our Wolverine, AKA Logan, is played by actor Liam McIntyre who taps into the rage, pain, and nuances of this iconic character. In this story, he is on the hunt to uncover the secrets of a dark past that keeps eluding him. Unfortunately, in this world, he’ll have to dig his claws deep to pull any shred of information that may lead to answers. Often, that means shredding into a relentless onslaught of enemies who aim to stop him by any means necessary. Fueled by unflinching resilience (and a rapid healing factor), Wolverine won’t go down easy if it means keeping the mission on task.

Wolverine was first teased back in 2021, during a PlayStation Showcase. At this time, the studio stated the game was still “very early in development”. It also still had its Marvel’s Spider-Man sequel in the works at this point, with that project ultimately releasing in 2023.

The most we’ve seen from the game, to date, was actually back in 2023, when files were stolen from Insomniac Games by ransomware hackers. Following this attack, people began playing – and uploading footage – of an incomplete early development build of Wolverine, which was found within the stolen files. Safe to say, things are looking a bit more like a finalised game right now.

We’re going to see more of the game in Spring 2026, apparently. See you then, bub.
