Google releases more teasers for the Pixel 10 event, and photo AI features heavily

by admin August 17, 2025

  • Google has posted more Pixel event teasers
  • Phones, watches, and earbuds are expected
  • Several celebrities will be in attendance too

Google is going to be launching the Pixel 10 phones, the Pixel Watch 4, and the Pixel Buds 2a this coming Wednesday, August 20, and several new and official teaser clips have made their way online promoting the event.

One of the teasers that’s appeared on the Made by Google feed on X is promoting AI photo technology: adding people into images after they’ve been taken, and going beyond the normal zoom levels to get even closer to a subject.

While these AI-powered editing tools are already available on the current Google Pixel 9 handsets, the suggestion is that we’ll get more features along the same lines when the four expected Pixel 10 devices are unveiled.

Another teaser focuses on the fact that the launch event is being held in New York, with special guests Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Curry, Lando Norris, and the Jonas brothers said to be in attendance, amongst others – so there’ll be plenty of celebrities on show.

Lots of new devices

The other teasers posted in the last few days show off the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and comment on a lack of innovation in the phone industry – possibly having a dig at Apple, which has yet to join Samsung and Google in launching a foldable.

In terms of aesthetics and content, these teaser clips match up with other previews we’ve already seen from Google. It looks like the gray/silver color that’s apparently going to be called Moonstone will be featuring prominently.

One of the clips also shows a Pixel Watch and a pair of Pixel Buds, confirming that we can expect these devices to show up alongside four phones: the Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro, the Pixel 10 Pro XL, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

The rumors that have appeared online have covered everything from the Pixel 10 going eSIM-only, to it adding an upgraded telephoto camera, and in just a few days we’ll know for sure what Google has been busy working on.

Adobe Project Indigo is a new photo app from former Pixel camera engineers

by admin June 19, 2025

Adobe launched its own take on how smartphone cameras should work this week with Project Indigo, a new iPhone camera app from some of the team behind the Pixel camera. The project combines the computational photography techniques that engineers Marc Levoy and Florian Kainz popularized at Google, with pro controls and new AI-powered features.

In their announcement of the new app, Levoy and Kainz style Project Indigo as the better answer to typical smartphone camera complaints of limited controls and over-processing. Rather than using aggressive tone mapping and sharpening, Project Indigo is supposed to use “only mild tone mapping, boosting of color saturation, and sharpening.” That’s intentionally not the same as the “zero-processing” approach some third-party apps are taking. “Based on our conversations with photographers, what they really want is not zero-process but a more natural look — more like what an SLR might produce,” Levoy and Kainz write.

Adobe

The new app also has fully manual controls, “and the highest image quality that computational photography can provide,” whether you want a JPEG or a RAW file at the end. Project Indigo achieves that by dramatically under-exposing the shots it combines together, and relying on a larger number of shots to combine — up to 32 frames, according to Levoy and Kainz. The app also includes some of Adobe’s more experimental photo features, like “Remove Reflections,” which uses AI to eliminate reflections from photos.

Levoy left Google in 2020, and joined Adobe a few months later to form a team with the express goal of building a “universal camera app”. Based on his LinkedIn, Kainz joined Adobe that same year. At Google, Kainz and Levoy were often credited with popularizing the concept of computational photography, where camera apps rely more on software than hardware to produce quality smartphone photos. Google’s success in that arena kicked off a camera arms race that’s raised the bar everywhere, but also led to some pretty over-the-top photos. Project Indigo is a bit of a corrective, and also an interesting test whether a third-party app that might produce better photos is enough to beat the default.

Project Indigo is available to download for free now, and runs on either the iPhone 12 Pro and up, or the iPhone 14 and up. An Android version of the app is coming at some point in the future.

Minecraft now has a photo mode with Vibrant Memories

by admin June 18, 2025

Photo modes are a pretty common feature for video games where players go bounding around an interesting open world. Today, Minecraft joined their ranks, making an in-game camera available in the Minecraft Marketplace as a free add-on called Vibrant Memories. The feature requires a copy of Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition on any platform; the Java version doesn’t appear to support the camera.

As well as capturing the moment as-is and saving particular camera angles to reuse later, Vibrant Memories will let a player decide whether or not to appear in the image. It will also let them set whether the weather is sunny or rainy and if the time is sunrise, sunset, day or night.

That’s a pared-back take on photo mode, but then in many ways, Minecraft is a pared-back game. Sure, it’s gotten loads of new features and creatures over the past 15 years, but at heart, it’s just about mining and crafting.

Google completely remade its Snapseed iOS photo editor

by admin June 13, 2025

After several years, Google has released a major update to the iOS version of its Snapseed photo editor. Version 3.0 is the program offers a complete redesign of both the iPhone and iPad apps. All of the images that have been edited with the tool are displayed in a grid. Navigation has been rearranged into three tabs, with a new Faves section for the photo tools that you want to quickly use on the regular. It boasts more than 25 different tools and filters for altering photos, including some newly added film filters. Snapseed also has a refreshed its logo with a more streamlined look.

Google acquired Snapseed all the way back in 2012. The new take on the app is a surprise, since Snapseed hadn’t received any major updates on iOS since 2021. One thing has not changed: the app is still free and has no advertisements. For now, the listing for Snapseed in Google Play is still a version from last year; it’s unclear if or when 3.0 will arrive on Android.

6 Best Digital Photo Frames (2025): Aura, Nixplay, Skylight

6 Best Digital Photo Frames (2025): Aura, Nixplay, Skylight

by admin June 1, 2025

Honorable Mentions

Aeezo 9-inch frame $90: This frame will do the job, but the app—the Frameo app, rather than a dedicated Azeeo app, which we’ve seen on other cheap frames as well—isn’t nearly as streamlined as pricier counterparts. They’re better that other cheap options we’ve tested, but, like Cozyla, they cross the $100 threshold. If you can spend a little more, the $150 Aura Carver is a much better buy.

Aura Mason for $199: This was the big original favorite from Aura, with a solid frame and the ability to rotate between landscape and portrait mode. It’s still a great frame, but Aura did say they’re sunsetting the model, but it’ll remain available until it’s sold out.

Aura Walden for $299: This frame is essentially the same as the Aspen and Carver Mat but larger, reaching 15 inches across. It’s great for wall hanging or for large great rooms, especially since it has a nice flat back. I love mine for my living room and kitchen combo, since the frame is large enough for me to enjoy the pictures from across both rooms.

Azorpa 10-Inch Digital Photo Frame for $110: This slim frame works well and has a nice affordable price point, and it can be rotated. It also has its own dedicated app, unlike several affordable models that all use the same Frameo app. But the ratio is slimmer than smartphone photos, so I found myself needing to constantly recrop pictures or have an extra border along two of the sides. If you don’t mind a border and want a really cheap frame, this one’s solid.

Cozyla frames: We tried a few from this brand. Photo quality was great and there were solid features like only showing photos that match the current orientation of the frame. I found the app to be frustrating, however, and it comes pre-loaded with unnecessary art images. You can hide them from your frame, but there was no obvious way to remove them from the app entirely. If you happen to find one at a super discount, grab it, but other than that, I’d wait for an update.

Familink 10-Inch Digital Photo Frame for $120: Familink’s frame works with or without an internet connection, thanks to its 4G SIM card. Someone will need to set up an account on the website or app (iOS, Android) so that family members can send photos (or even chats) to the frame. There’s no slideshow feature—the most recent addition shows automatically, and you can manually scroll through. But the screen still looks good.

myFirst Frame Doodle for $130: This frame is aimed at kids, with its cover you can draw on and an app feed that family members can use for photo sharing and chatting. But it’s too expensive for the quality. It was slow and not as straightforward as Aura and no matter how many times I deleted photos from the library, they kept returning.

Pexar 2K Digital Picture Frame by Lexar for $130: This frame can rotate to be either portrait or landscape mode, and has a little stand that attaches via magnet for either position. It’s a fine frame, but the screen isn’t as nice as those for a similar price. The Pexar is made by Lexar but uses a third-party app, Frameo, which works fine but has a weirdly Instagram-like uploader that’s limited to 10 photos.

Skylight 10-inch Frame for $170: This frame was a previous honorable mention, and it’s still a solid frame. We like other frames better for the price, including the new Skylight Frame 2 (especially with its Snap Frame accessories). This one only has 8GB of storage, compared to most other frames having 16GB or more.

Vieunite’s Textura Digital Canvas for $754 (USD shown in cart): Is beautiful for displaying professional art. It’s bright and high-def enough that you don’t lose the integrity of the original painting. It’s extremely expensive, though, even if it cheaper than buying an actual van Gogh.

FAQs

What Should You Look For in a Digital Photo Frame?

AccordionItemContainerButton

Here’s the top features you should check in a frame:

  • Screen ratio: This will affect how well a photo fits into the screen, depending on the device you used to take it. Smartphone photos are usually in the 4:3 ratio, for example, while a common aspect ratio for DSLR cameras and mirrorless cameras is 3:2. But there’s a lot of cheaper frames with a slimmer ratio, 16:9, which results in either space bars around a photo or the need to crop every picture you add. Check this ratio in advance to get the best pairing of your digital picture frame and your photography.
  • Position options: Our budget pick, the Aura Carver, can only be placed in landscape mode, though it can put two portrait photos side by side. Most other digital picture frames can be rotated, but I find it’s easiest to choose one orientation for your frame and upload pictures that best suit that orientation.
  • Additional fees and storage limits: Aura, our top pick, offers free photo storage, but other frame companies have pay tiers or have storage limits. Check these in advance to make sure you’re prepared.
  • Storage and security measures: How safe are your photos? What kind of storage is being used, and are they encrypted? Check out our section below on security to understand why these questions matter.

What Storage Options Are There?

AccordionItemContainerButton

All the main frames we recommend use cloud-based storage, so you’ll upload your photos to a cloud server for the frame to reach and display them. Aura has unlimited storage for photos, while Nixplay charges $30 a year for unlimited photo storage (along with other features). While both use cloud storage, these are both reputable companies with defined privacy and security practices. Some of the cheaper frames you’ll find won’t have these processes in place.

Some frames have internal storage that can be expanded with SD cards, or even use a USB stick. These options can be more secure, especially if you’re moving photos yourself from the computer to the USB or SD card and then connecting it to the frame, but it’s also more work.

AccordionItemContainerButton

You might not think that photos count as sensitive information, compared to a bank account statement or your Social Security number. But it can be devastating to find photos of loved ones used for nefarious or unsavory purposes.

This is why we prefer frames from reputable companies like Aura and Nixplay over cheaper ones with less clearly defined privacy and security practices. Nixplay offers reasonable security measures, like encrypting your photos during transmission, and Aura offers the option to delete metadata, like the location where a photo was captured. However, both say they may disclose personal information if court-ordered or subpoenaed, and neither provides safety guarantees against hacking.

If you’re concerned about security, you can avoid connecting to third-party services, but your most secure option is to just download several photos on a tablet and disable all internet connectivity.
