Pete Hines Says Game Pass Worth ‘Jack S***’ Without The People Who Make It

by admin September 6, 2025

Bethesda’s former VP of publishing, Pete Hines, still sounds skeptical of Game Pass. Nearly two years after leaving the Fallout and Elder Scrolls maker, the veteran video game marketer shared his concerns about subscription gaming’s long-term impact on the industry. “You need to properly acknowledge, compensate, and recognize what it takes to create that content and not just make a game, but make a product,” he said in a new interview with DBLTap.

Hines had worked at Bethesda for over two decades when it was acquired by Microsoft in 2021 for over $7 billion. While the relationship seemed like a natural fit following a long history of closely working together, going back to the days of porting Morrowind to Xbox, there were clear cracks as Microsoft’s gaming strategy evolved following the launch of the Xbox Series X/S.

Internal communications revealed during the FTC trial over the tech giant’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard suggested Hines in particular was frustrated with a mandate that Bethesda stop bringing its games to rival platform PlayStation 5. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was multiplatform before becoming an Xbox exclusive, only for it to go multiplatform again when Microsoft pivoted in the years after Hines retired.

While the former exec doesn’t touch on that messy 180 in the new interview, he does address concerns about subscription gaming and especially how servicing something like Game Pass drives incentives within a massive publishing organization like Xbox. Earlier this summer, Microsoft’s gaming division was hit with more mass layoffs, including the cancellation of an internally well-regarded loot shooter project called Blackbird that was being developed at the Bethesda-adjacent ZeniMax Online.

I’m involved enough to know I saw what I considered to be some short sighted decision making several years ago, and it seems to be bearing out the way I said. Subscriptions have become the new four letter word, right? You can’t buy a product anymore. When you talk about a subscription that relies on content, if you don’t figure out how to balance the needs of the service and the people running the service with the people who are providing the content – without which your subscription is worth jack shit – then you have a real problem. You need to properly acknowledge, compensate and recognize what it takes to create that content and not just make a game, but make a product. That tension is hurting a lot of people, including the content creators themselves, because they’re fitting into an ecosystem that is not properly valuing and rewarding what they’re making.

A big topic recently has been whether Microsoft’s first-party game studios are compatible with Game Pass. The company says Game Pass is profitable and that it takes into account lost sales from games being available for free to paying subscribers. But it’s still unclear how the development costs for those games are captured within the company and what the new metrics are for success. Does total minutes of your game played matter more than total sales? Would studios like Hi-Fi Rush maker Tango Gameworks still have been shuttered if that were the case?

However the current system works, Hines seems concerned it’s not “properly valuing and rewarding” what developers at the company are making. And that’s before getting into questions about recent mass layoffs, their impact on morale, and institutional brain drain when senior people disappear from an organization. But it’s also unclear how much the Game Pass question will ultimately matter in the long run.

Subscriber numbers appear to have hit a ceiling and Microsoft is now selling games on PS5, a marketplace much closer to the product-oriented one Hines says teams like those inside Bethesda were originally designed for. At the rate Microsoft keeps pivoting, it’s hard to know where things will go next.

Former Bethesda marketing VP says he fought against reusing the Prey name for Arkane’s 2017 immersive sim: ‘I definitely pissed some people off internally over that’

by admin September 5, 2025

Arkane’s 2017 immersive sim Prey is a genuinely great videogame, with a genuinely weird name—shared with a pre-existing shooter and a famously cancelled sequel that it has absolutely nothing to do with. Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio said a few years ago that he really did not want to call it Prey, and it turns out he was not alone on that: Former Bethesda marketing and communications boss Pete Hines said in an interview with Dbltap that he was dead-set against it too.

“I definitely pissed some people off internally over that because I fought so hard against using that name,” Hines said. “I’m the head of the spear, but I had a lot of people across my team—brand, PR and community—and we feel like we’re burdening it with a name where we spend more time explaining why it’s called Prey than we do talking about the game.”

The reason for all that time spent explaining, as previously noted, is that the whole thing was so odd. Prey—the original—was developed by Human Head Studios and released in 2006, and it was quite good. A sequel was planned, although it was more of a spinoff, following the adventures of a completely different character in a completely different setting: A great cinematic trailer set a bar that the planned sequel couldn’t quite clear, and it was ultimately scrapped.

Years later, Bethesda decided to resurrect the title for a completely unrelated project, and thus one of the best immsims of all time was hung with a needlessly confusing name. Explanations as to exactly why were never entirely convincing, and according to Colantonio, the Arkane founder, nobody at the studio wanted it—and being forced to use the name was part of why he decided to leave Arkane just a couple months after Prey (2017) was released.

Hines told Dbltap he regrets losing his battle against calling the game Prey, but added that “nobody on this planet could have put more of a good faith effort into changing minds on that.”

“My whole point was, look how much time we spend talking about what the game is versus why it’s called this and like, that is wasted energy. That is wasted excitement,” Hines said. “We could be turning that into something positive.”

I sure don’t disagree. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that recycling the Prey name was responsible for its unfortunate underperformance, but it surely didn’t help—and with the option to call it literally anything else on the table, I will never understand why Bethesda was so determined to stick with it. Regardless of that, though, it really is a phenomenal game, and if you haven’t played it yet it’s your lucky day, because it’s currently on sale for 80% off—just $6—on GOG.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

This wasn’t the only interesting reminiscence in the interview: Hines also shared some fun memories of the great Fallout 76 canvas bag debacle: “When the fuck did we add a canvas bag to this collector’s edition?”

Discord raises user count to allow 25M people in a single server

by admin September 5, 2025

Discord has raised the maximum default server limit to 25 million users, just two months after increasing it to 2.5 million.

In July 2025, the platform expanded its cap from 500,000 to 2.5 million. Now, the ceiling has been pushed even further, allowing some of the largest online communities to grow significantly larger.

According to Discord, the update is paired with technical improvements aimed at reducing strain on massive servers. These include batching certain server updates and shifting more processes to asynchronous operations.

Article continues after ad

“In our July 2025 Patch Notes entry (only two months ago!), we mentioned that we increased the default user limit for servers from 500K to 2.5M,” they said.

“Well… we pushed that even *further* and have now bumped that limit to 25 million users. We also continued to solve larger server pain points by batching certain types of server updates and moving to more asynchronous operations to help bring more stability to large servers.

“We’re committed to providing a great experience for our users, and we’re hoping this work is felt by users and admins of very large servers.”

Discord said the changes are meant to improve stability and create a smoother experience for users and administrators running large-scale communities.

The company noted in its announcement that the expansion is part of an ongoing effort to solve pain points for servers operating at a massive scale, emphasizing its commitment to supporting the growth of major online hubs.

‘People Are So Proud of This’: How River and Lake Water Is Cooling Buildings

by admin September 5, 2025

“In the old days, it was more like a luxury project,” says Deo de Klerk, team lead for heating and cooling solutions at the Dutch energy firm Eneco. Today, his company’s clients increasingly ask for district cooling as well as district heating systems. Eneco has 33 heating and cooling projects under construction. In Rotterdam, Netherlands, one of the company’s installations helps to cool buildings, including apartment blocks, police offices, a theater and restaurants, using water from the River Meuse.

It’s not hard to see why cooling technologies are getting more popular. A few years ago, Nayral moved out of Paris. She remembers the heat waves. “My routine during the weekend was to go to the parks,” she says. Nayral would sit there well into the evening—reading Les Misérables, no less—waiting for her apartment to cool down. Recently, she has increasingly found herself spending time in shopping malls, where air-conditioning is plentiful, in order to make it through searing hot French summers. This year, unprecedented heat waves hit France and other countries in Europe.

The city of Paris is now desperate to help its denizens find cool refuges during spells of extreme heat. A key component of Parisian climate adaptation plans is the river-supplied cooling network, the pipes for which currently cover a distance of 100 kilometers, though this is due to expand to 245 km by 2042. While around 800 buildings are served by the network today, those in charge aim to supply 3,000 buildings by that future date.

Systems such as Paris’ do not pump river water around properties. Rather, a loop of pipework brings river water into facilities where it soaks up warmth from a separate, closed loop of water that connects to buildings. That heat transfer is possible thanks to devices called heat exchangers. When cooled water in the separate loop later arrives at buildings, more heat exchangers allow it to cool down fluid in pipes that feed air-conditioning devices in individual rooms. Essentially, heat from, say, a packed conference room or tourist-filled art gallery is gradually transferred—pipe by pipe—to a river or lake.

The efficiency of Paris’ system varies throughout the year, but even at the height of summer, when the Seine is warm, the coefficient of performance (COP)—how many kilowatt-hours of cooling energy you get for every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed by the system—does not dip much below 4. In the winter, when offices, museums, and hospitals still require some air-conditioning, the COP can be as high as 15, much higher than conventional air-conditioning systems. “It is absolutely magnificent,” boasts Nayral.

But those summer temperatures are increasingly a concern. This summer, the Seine briefly exceeded 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit), says Nayral. How can that cool anything? The answer is chiller devices, which help to provide additional cooling for the water that circulates around buildings. Instead of blowing out hot air, those devices can expel their heat into the Seine via the river loop. The opportunity to keep doing this is narrowing, though—because Fraîcheur de Paris is not allowed to return water to the Seine at temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, for environmental reasons. At present, that means the river can accommodate only a few additional degrees of heat on the hottest days. Future, stronger heat waves could evaporate more of that overhead.

Hollow Knight Silksong

Silksong is so popular, even people in the Piracy subreddit are encouraging others to just buy it: ‘If we can afford to support them, we should’

by admin September 4, 2025

Hollow Knight: Silksong finally went live today—you may have heard something about that—and its arrival absolutely demolished Steam, which simply could not hold up under the crushing demand of Skongmania. As Steam crumbled like a train bridge made of soggy noodles, GOG did what it does best: Took a shot from the shadows.

“It appears that Silkzillion gamers worldwide are trying to get their hands on Hollow Knight: Silksong, and digital storefronts are struggling to handle the traffic,” GOG posted on X. “But the DRM-free Bastion stands strong.” Naturally, there was a link to Silksong on GOG.

It appears that Silkzillion gamers worldwide are trying to get their hands on Hollow Knight: Silksong, and digital storefronts are struggling to handle the traffic. But the DRM-free Bastion stands strong 😎👇 https://t.co/XVbkDmXLceSeptember 4, 2025

I can’t say I’d really thought about it before seeing that post, but it caught me a little by surprise because it felt, well, incongruous. The value of DRM is debatable but generally speaking it does at least help cut down on day-one piracy; releasing one of the most eagerly anticipated games to come along in years on a platform whose number-one promo point is “No DRM” was surely a high-risk move.

Related articles

Except, maybe not. Sure enough, Silksong was available through less-than-legal channels almost immediately after launch, but as noticed by GamesRadar, the 2.4 million strong Piracy subreddit seemed torn on the topic: Unexpectedly, quite a few of its members have been urging people not to pirate Silksong.

“I was planning on doing it, since every recent game costs around $80 and that’s a lot of money for a game,” one redditor wrote in a pre-release thread asking how potential pirates planned to proceed. “But after the price was revealed, $20, I thought, damn that’s good, and I’m not pirating it.”

Others felt the same way, “I think I’m just gonna buy this one. It’s only $20 and I really enjoyed Hollow Knight so, I’m sure I won’t be mad about spending the money on this one,” one respondent wrote.

“Apparently it’ll only be like 20 bucks with a three person team. I can and will definitely buy it after it’s been out a week or two,” another added.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Similar responses can be seen in a bigger thread announcing that Silksong was uploaded to pirate sites 15 minutes after it launched.

“It’s a 3-4 person team that has done right by their fans at every turn,” No-Shape6053 wrote. “Making sure the PC release is DRM free. Making sure all original backers of Hollow Knight get Silksong free on their choice of platform. This is a time where if we can afford to support them, we should.”

Redditor Efrayl added: “I’m buying this game on GOG straight away, even though I will probably play it later (after a few updates and when it will be on discount).”

RandoT said he’s never purchased a full-priced game on launch day in the 10+ years he’s had his Steam account, but he’s doing it for Silksong: “It was Team Cherry that made me break my ‘vow’ to always buy on discount.”

Silksong’s release is the first time I’ve seen comments on the Piracy subreddit push for people to buy it instead.

— @airbagged.bsky.social (@airbagged.bsky.social.bsky.social) 2025-09-04T21:13:04.693Z

#Silksong has appeared on piracy websites for PC and r/Piracy is having arguments over pirating it, lmao

— @born2beslicker.bsky.social (@born2beslicker.bsky.social.bsky.social) 2025-09-04T21:13:04.668Z

To be clear, this is not a wholesale changing-of-ways. Plenty of people in the subreddit say they’re going to pirate Silksong regardless, some with the claimed intent of buying it later when their finances allow and others simply as a matter of because I can principle.

But the extent of the push to just buy the damned thing seems genuinely unusual. Much of that arises from the fact that Silksong itself is very unusual: A monster-hit (and, going by the current Steam rating, very good—we’re still working on our review but will have it up soon) game priced at $20, developed by tiny team that doesn’t seem too arsed about the accepted conventions of making and releasing videogames.

It’s not the sort of scenario that could be duplicated by Electronic Arts or Ubisoft, in other words, and I wouldn’t expect executives at any major or mid-sized publisher to look at this and think that maybe ditching Denuvo really is the way to go. Still, it does really drive home the notion that while you’re never going to stop piracy, you can sometimes turn some people around on it by asking a fair price, making a good game, and being genuine throughout. I think that’s kind of nice.

Google Play Games is about to show people what you play

by admin September 2, 2025

Google is updating user profiles for its Play Games service on Android devices to display gaming stats, achievements, and social features. The changes include a suite of new capabilities for “showcasing and tracking your game progress and stats, new ways to build your gaming community, and allowing you to tailor your profile to your liking,” according to Google’s help page.

The update will be applied automatically, and starts rolling out in most global regions on September 23rd, and on October 1st for users in the EU and UK. Google is also emailing Google Play users directly to notify them about the changes. When applied, Google Play Games profiles and features will start appearing on the Google Play Store to prevent users from having to switch between apps when managing their accounts.

The unified update aims to help users who make their profile information public to connect with other players and track their gaming milestones. It’s unclear what this will specifically entail, but it sounds similar to how player information, gaming history, and achievements are currently displayed on Valve’s Steam service.

‘A Lot of People Will Get Upset’: ETH Predicted to Collapse Below $3,500

by admin September 1, 2025

According to Benjamin Cowen, the price of Ethereum (ETH), the leading alternative cryptocurrency, could pull back to the 21-week EMA, which is currently below $3,500.

However, the cryptocurrency would then be able to resume its rally following a short-term retracement.

Now that Ethereum has run the prior All Time Highs in August, I think ETH will drop back to its 21W EMA.

A lot of people will get upset with this idea, but this has been the plan since ETH went home in April (new ATH, then pullback to 21W EMA and find support). https://t.co/WLPBK3mHJ3 pic.twitter.com/2AalzbsMdb

— Benjamin Cowen (@intocryptoverse) September 1, 2025

The analyst, who boasts more than a million followers on the X social media platform, claims that such a pattern has been playing out since April. Cowen is convinced that the same thing will happen this time around.

ETH’s bullish momentum fades

As reported by U.Today, Ethereum was on track to record its best Q3 to date, outperforming “DeFi summer” from 2020.

However, its massive rally has now stalled, with the token currently changing hands just below the $4,400 mark.

Notably, Cowen does not rule out that ETH could see a fake push toward $4,900. If it does happen, he expects such a bull trap to occur as early as this week.

Even though a significant correction seems to be possible based on the chart shared by Cowen, robust spot Ethereum (ETH) inflows might throw a spanner in the works for the bulls.

Last week, these products added a total of 286,000 tokens, according to Glassnode data.

‘These works are vital for the morale of our people,’ co-owner of Ukrainian publishing house declares after Games Workshop ends deal to translate Warhammer novels

by admin August 31, 2025

After years of Ukrainian readers only having access to Warhammer novels via pirated Russian translations, Games Workshop cut a deal with Molfar Comics (who also publish translated versions of manga and World of Warcraft novels) to localize books published under its Black Library imprint. When that contract suddenly ended, Ukrainians who were three books into the Horus Heresy weren’t super happy about it.

As Oleksandr Nevskiy, the co-owner of Molfar Comics, said to The Telegraph, “At a time when Ukraine is at war and we are fighting for our right to exist, having global products available in our native language plays an incredibly important role. These works are vital for the morale of our people, especially our soldiers—many of whom are our readers. We have repeatedly received photos of soldiers reading Warhammer books in trenches or in hospital beds.”

The internet, with typical restraint and consideration, went into full conspiracy mode, suggesting it was clearly a sign of Games Workshop collaborating with the Russian government to undermine the morale of Ukrainian soldiers who wouldn’t be able to go on fighting if they couldn’t find out what happened in the next Ciaphas Cain novel. (It was exactly the same thing that happened in every Ciaphas Cain novel, but you get the point.) This, despite the fact Games Workshop suspended all Warhammer sales in Russia back in 2022.

Related articles

Games Workshop eventually had to respond with an Instagram post saying, “Among all of the many millions of comments and messages we’ve received this week, we’ve noticed a few, let’s say, imaginative accounts doing the rounds.” They went on to clarify that sales of Warhammer miniatures in Ukraine would continue, and that, “Recently we chose not to renew our contract with a Ukrainian publisher who had previously been responsible for localising Black Library novels. We won’t discuss the why. That wouldn’t be right. What we will say is that we thought long and hard about it, and it was done for good reason.”

The post finished by asking for any Ukrainian publishing houses “who match our dedication to quality and service” to contact Games Workshop and discuss a partnership.

95 People Sickened, 18 Hospitalized After Eating These Recalled Eggs

by admin August 29, 2025

The CDC and FDA issued a recall notice on Thursday, warning consumers about brown eggs that have been linked to a salmonella outbreak in 14 states. The eggs, sourced from Country Eggs of Lucerne Valley, California, have sickened at least 95 people and hospitalized 18. No deaths have been reported.

The cage-free eggs have been sold under brand names that include Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, Nijiya Markets, and Country Eggs, according to a notice posted by the CDC.

  • Code on carton: No. CA-7695
  • Sell by dates ranging from July 1, 2025, to Sept. 18, 2025

The eggs were also sold using the description “sunshine/omega-3 golden” yolk (1/15 Dozen fresh eggs bulk) to food service retailers with the same codes and sell-by dates listed above, according to the FDA. Consumers are encouraged to discard any recalled eggs.

The CDC provided a map showing the 14 states where they’ve identified illnesses from the salmonella outbreak.

© CDC / FDA

The states, along with the number of cases:

  • Arizona (1 case)
  • California (73 cases)
  • Florida (1 case)
  • Georgia (1 case)
  • Hawaii (1 case)
  • Iowa (1 case)
  • Minnesota (4 cases)
  • Nebraska (1 case)
  • Nevada (3 cases)
  • New Mexico (1 case)
  • New York (2 cases)
  • North Carolina (2 cases)
  • Pennsylvania (1 case)
  • Washington (3 cases)

The CDC notes that the actual number of people sickened by this outbreak is likely much higher than the number the agency is reporting because most people who get sick don’t require medical care and are never tested for salmonella.

The people who’ve become sick from this outbreak range in age from 1 to 91 years old, with a median age of 29. Fifty-five percent have been identified as female, with 45% of those who’ve fallen ill being male.

The CDC also includes a racial breakdown for those who’ve become sick, with 62% white, 37% Asian, and 1% Black. Twenty-four percent are identified as Hispanic, while 76% are non-Hispanic, according to the ethnic data published by the CDC.

Public health investigators are using a system called Pulsenet to identify illnesses that might be part of this outbreak. The CDC’s Pulsenet includes a national database of “DNA fingerprints of bacteria” that allows investigators to track bacteria using whole genome sequencing (WGS).

From the CDC’s website:

WGS showed that bacteria from sick people’s samples are closely related genetically. This suggests that people in this outbreak got sick from the same food.

Based on WGS analysis, bacteria from 94 people’s samples had predicted resistance to nalidixic acid and nonsusceptibility to ciprofloxacin (NSC); this NSC strain is related to a strain of Salmonella Enteritidis isolated from chicken, eggs, and backyard poultry. Most people with Salmonella illness recover without antibiotics. However, if antibiotics are needed, some illnesses in this outbreak may not be treatable with some commonly recommended antibiotics and may require a different antibiotic choice. More information is available at the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) site.

FDA conducted traceback based on where sick people reported shopping or eating eggs and dishes containing eggs during the timeframe of interest. Country Eggs, LLC was identified as a common supplier.

Pretty neat, when you think about it. Too bad the Trump regime is doing everything it can to destroy the agency. Here’s hoping the folks at the CDC can continue to do their important work now and into the future.

Elden Ring Nightreign's evil Deep Of Night mode gets a release date, but some people are already playing it

Elden Ring Nightreign’s evil Deep Of Night mode gets a release date, but some people are already playing it

by admin August 28, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign will get a new rock-hard Expedition mode called Deep of Night on 11th September. “Rock-hard” is a cliché worn to uselessness, of course: to be more specific, this is at least tungsten-carbide-hard, possibly even as hard as stishovite, though the exact degree of toughness is variable.

It’s variable because Deep of Night gets statistically harder, the more you win, with a difficulty rating or “depth” that fluctuates based on wins and losses. Enemies are tougher than usual by default, and you can’t specify which Nightlord you’re hunting, so be prepared for nasty surprises. There are new special Depth Relics, exclusive to this mode, which sadistically bundle together additional buffs and debuffs.

Hungry for more d33tz? Lucky for you, dataminers managed to unearth Deep of Night from the existing game’s files a whole three weeks ago, as written up by Mark. It looks like there are five “depths” in total, and there is mention of “magmafied” enemy variants.

Following the aforesaid datamining, Elden Ring Nightreign modders have contrived to get the mode operational and begun posting videos that show off some of the new gear. Kotaku have a write-up of those videos in which we are exposed to the harrowing truth that rats in the starting camp take three hits to kill, not two. Seriously, this is the kind of switch-up that could wreck a whole expedition. There’s also talk of one of the new gear items, a Sentry’s Torch that increases lightning damage negation while increasing the damage taken from the peripheral Night’s Tide.

Watch on YouTube

Seems fun? I find that every From game gets harder, the more I play it, but then again, that also applies to getting up in the morning as I age. I’m pretty sure datamining wasn’t what From Software had in mind when they talked about hidden depths. I’d ask them to comment, but they might get mad and throw a paperweight at me (+10 poise break).
