Top Democrat Escalates Probe Into Pantera Founder Morehead’s Taxes

by admin October 2, 2025

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, is continuing his inquiry into whether Dan Morehead, the founder of asset manager Pantera Capital, sought to avoid paying taxes through his move to Puerto Rico.

Wyden’s probe into whether Morehead committed tax evasion began in January, and is focused on how the Pantera founder reported taxes on his share of proceeds after a large crypto sale by the firm. According to a press release, Wyden is specifically looking at whether Morehead “misrepresent[ed] his residency status” when Pantera generated over $1 billion in capital gains from crypto sales by claiming his profits from the sale came while he was in Puerto Rico. Residents of the U.S. territory do not pay income tax on capital gains.

“It is my understanding your share of these gains … was hundreds of millions of dollars,” Wyden said in the letter, sent on Wednesday. “It is also my understanding that you treated the entire [gain] as exempt from U.S. tax, even though the lion’s share of these gains accrued while you still resided in California. These are serious allegations of potential abuse of Puerto Rico tax incentives to avoid the payment of U.S. taxes that you must immediately address.”

Wyden’s letter alleged that Morehead’s attorneys “have all but disappeared” despite initially engaging with his staff. He also said in the letter that he believes Morehead was advised by Jeffrey Rubinger, a Miami-based attorney who advised another client who “recently pled guilty to a tax fraud scheme” tied to the same Puerto Rico tax rules.

A Pantera spokesperson referred CoinDesk to a previous statement from Morehead, when he told the New York Times in a statement earlier this year that, “I believe I acted appropriately with respect to my taxes.”

Wyden’s probe does not carry the full weight of an investigation by the Senate Finance Committee at the moment, given Democrats are the minority party in the Senate and committee Chair Mike Crapo — the top Republican on the committee — does not appear to have joined in the inquiry at this time.

Wyden’s letter came the same day the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on crypto tax issues specifically. Witnesses at the hearing warned that the IRS may soon face a deluge of tax reporting.

Pantera Capital Refutes Investment in NFT Project Akio

by admin September 27, 2025

Akio, a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) project, falsely announced on September 24 that it had raised a $5 million seed round led by Pantera Capital. The announcement, made on the social media platform X, was quickly and publicly denied by Pantera partner Franklin Bi, highlighting an issue of projects making unsubstantiated claims to generate interest. The incident is a warning of the importance of background checks on statements claimed in social media, by crypto projects.

A Funding Claim Unravels

The incident began when Akio published a graphic on its X account detailing a supposed $5 million seed round with Pantera Capital as the lead investor, along with Nvidia Ventures, Hasbro Ventures, AMD Ventures, and other players.

Shortly after the post went live, Franklin Bi of Pantera Capital issued a direct denial on X, stating, “Pantera is not an investor in this.”

Alert: Pantera is not an investor in @AkioWorldNFT.

We’ve confimed the same with several other investors mentioned in the tweet below.

I was blocked by the project & can’t respond directly to the original tweet or comments.

Good luck out there. Stay paranoid. 🫡 pic.twitter.com/FqeWdw7JU4

— Franklin Bi (@FranklinBi) September 25, 2025

Beyond Pantera, none of the other companies shown in the Akio post, Nvidia Ventures, Hasbro Ventures, AMD Ventures, Net Ease Global, SBI GRoup, SIG DTI, Susquehanna International Group Company, have publicly acknowledged any investment in Akio or the publication.

Instead of issuing a correction, the Akio project reportedly blocked Franklin Bi on the platform following his refutation of their announcement.

Legit Information

The Akio incident offers a direct example of red flags and underscores that investors have to carefully review information, as well as the source of the announcement. Legitimate funding rounds are typically confirmed through official press releases or on the investors’ own channels, not just a social media graphic.

Investors can also verify claims with the alleged investors directly, such as: Pantera Capital’s official website reveals no mention of Akio in its portfolio. A lack of confirmation on a venture firm’s official blog, portfolio page, or social media can be a warning sign.

A Playbook for Investor Due Diligence

The Akio incident serves as a real-time case study in the red flags that can surround fundraising announcements. For investors, it places a spotlight on the importance of verifying claims before making financial decisions. Here are key steps for due diligence:

  1. Trust Official Channels: Legitimate funding rounds are almost always announced via official press releases or are featured on the venture capital firm’s own website, blog, or verified social media accounts. An unverified graphic on a project’s own social media is not sufficient proof.
  2. Verify the Portfolio: Check the investor’s official website. Pantera Capital’s online portfolio, for example, contains no mention of Akio. A project’s absence from its alleged backer’s portfolio is a significant red flag.
  3. Seek Cross-Confirmation: Look for reporting from reputable, independent crypto news outlets that have verified the round with the parties involved.

Why false claims threaten investor trust

False claims damage the reputation of the project making them and force venture capital firms to publicly defend their credibility. Also, it contributes to an erosion of trust across the industry. Furthermore, false hype can be used to temporarily inflate the price of tokens or NFTs, leaving uninformed buyers at a loss when the claims are proven false. The Akio-Pantera is a reminder that in a largely unregulated space, claims should  be treated with skepticism.

Pantera Capital CEO Predicts Bitcoin Might Hit $1 Million During His Lifetime

by admin September 15, 2025

During a recent appearance on CNBC, Dan Morehead, chief executive officer at US-based cryptocurrency fund Pantera Capital, predicted that the price of Bitcoin could potentially surge to as high as $750,000 within the next four years.

Morehead is not sure when BTC will be able to hit the oft-repeated $1 million target, but he is certain that this will eventually happen during his lifetime.

Morehead has recalled that Pantera Capital was actually the very first Bitcoin fund in the world. “That was the easiest way to get access then. Now, an ETF is very easy,” he said.

Notably, Panteral Capital’s first price target for Bitcoin was $5,000. It was announced back in 2013 when the largest cryptocurrency was trading at just $104.

Pantera Capital first predicted that Bitcoin could hit $740,000 last year. The firm initially saw the cryptocurrency reaching this target in 2028, but it also cautioned that such a prediction might be too optimistic.

Ethereum vs. Solana

Morehead has noted that Solana has been among the best-performing major currencies, and the firm currently has its biggest position in the high-flying altcoin.

“It’s actually had better performance than even Bitcoin over the last four years,” he noted.

He has noted that Solana is capable of doing roughly 9 billion transitions per day, which is more than the entire capital markets.

However, he is convinced that there is no “winner-take-all” mentality in crypto, noting that there were actually a lot of winners in the age of the internet.

With that said, he believes that there is only a single digit of layer-1s, including Ethereum and Solana, that will be able to survive in the long term.

Solana Institution Wave Builds: Pantera Eyes $1.25B Treasury

by admin August 26, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Pantera Capital is seeking to raise $1.25 billion for a Solana treasury, adding to the wave of institutional momentum building behind the asset.

Pantera Plans To Convert A Nasdaq-Listed Firm Into A Solana Treasury Vehicle

As first reported by The Information, Pantera Capital is planning to raise funds to create a Solana treasury vehicle. Initially, the firm intends to raise around $500 million from investors. It will then put these funds into a Nasdaq-listed company, which will use them to buy SOL and convert into a treasury vehicle called “Solana Co.”

Pantera Capital is an American venture capital and hedge fund specializing in digital assets and blockchain technology. The firm became the first to launch a cryptocurrency fund in the US back in 2013 and today, it manages over $4.8 billion in assets.

In a letter earlier in the month, Pantera disclosed it has invested over $300 million in digital asset treasury (DAT) companies. The firm said its investment thesis was based on a simple premise: “DATs can generate yield to grow net asset value per share, resulting in more underlying token ownership over time than just holding spot.”

Pantera is also an investor in medical firm Sharps Technology’s bid to create a $400 million Solana treasury, according to a press release from Sharps on Monday. And now, it seems the company is making a more direct push in the treasury space with its latest proposal. Beyond the initial $500 million, the firm also plans to raise another $750 million through warrants. If the plan comes to fruition, Solana Co. would become the largest SOL treasury in existence.

Interestingly, the report about Pantera comes just a day after another report revealed that Galaxy Digital, Jump Crypto, and Multicoin Capital are planning a $1 billion SOL treasury.

Upexi is currently the largest Solana treasury company with around 2 million tokens (about $383 million at the latest exchange rate), so the proposal from Galaxy and others would have already more than doubled the record. Now, Pantera’s plan could surpass even that.

The digital asset treasury model was popularized by Michael Saylor’s Strategy (formerly Microstrategy). Other companies soon followed by putting Bitcoin on their balance sheets, but recently, altcoins have started to get attention as well.

With Galaxy and partners, Pantera, and Sharps all unveiling Solana treasury plans, there now seems to be a real shift in institutional momentum behind the cryptocurrency.

So far, treasury companies have added around 0.75% of the SOL circulating supply to their holdings, according to data from institutional DeFi solutions provider Sentora (previously IntoTheBlock).

From the chart, it’s visible that the same figure sits at more than 9% for Bitcoin and about 3.4% for Ethereum. Thus, it seems SOL is still quite early in the treasury push.

SOL Price

At the time of writing, Solana is floating around $190, down over 3% in the last 24 hours.
