Hideo Kojima’s OD captures the spirit of P.T. in the first gameplay trailer

by admin September 23, 2025

Kojima Productions, the studio helmed by auteur and famed cardboard box enthusiast Hideo Kojima, has finally given us our first glimpse of gameplay for the horror game OD. Developed in collaboration with Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele, OD is being billed as a totally unique experience that Kojima expects to divide players. It’s also going to leverage Microsoft’s cloud gaming tech in ways we’re not yet aware of, with Xbox Game Studios publishing the game.

In the new just over three-minute trailer entitled “Knock”, we see first-person gameplay footage of the player character (played by a ludicrously photorealistic Sophia Lillis) anxiously lighting a series of candles, several of which have babies on them, because Kojima. In the background we hear a very ominous knocking sound, with the trailer ending as Lillis’ character is grabbed by someone (or something) who doesn’t appear to be especially friendly.

If you were fortunate enough to play P.T., the playable (and tragically no longer accessible) teaser for Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s cancelled Silent Hill game, you’ll know that the Metal Gear creator clearly understands how to craft terrifying horror experiences. From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like the spirit of P.T. at least lives on in OD.

It’s been a busy day for Kojima and his studio, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and has so far exclusively released Death Stranding games. At Kojima Productions’ “Beyond the Strand” event it was also announced that the studio is partnering with Niantic Spatial to develop what appears to be some kind of AR experience that brings Kojima’s “iconic storytelling into the real world.” Whether that means you can one day expect to encounter a virtual Norman Reedus attempting to steady his wobbling backpack on your way to the grocery store remains unclear, but Kojima Productions says the collaboration represents a “bold expansion into new forms of media beyond traditional gaming.”

And if all of that wasn’t enough, Kojima Productions is also teaming up with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group on a new credit card. It seemingly functions like a regular old credit card that can also be added to your phone, but you can accumulate reward points that can be spent on Kojima Productions merch and other items. Don’t get too excited unless you live in Japan, though, as it doesn’t look like the Kojima-branded credit card will be making its way to our shores when it launches next year.

Hideo Kojima’s OD Gives Us P.T. Vibes In New Preview

by admin September 23, 2025

Nearly two years ago, Hideo Kojima and director Jordan Peele revealed their upcoming horror game, OD. Since then, Kojima was largely focused on finishing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Now, Kojima Productions has shared a fresh look at OD during the Beyond the Strand event. And from the preview, it looks like Kojima is evoking P.T., the playable trailer for his canceled game Silent Hills.

The new video redacts some of the backstory text that sets up the game, which makes it difficult to understand what’s supposed to be happening. Stephen King’s It star Sophia Lillis plays the game’s leading character, but most of the action takes place from a first-person perspective. Near the beginning of the clip, Lillis’ character receives a card through the door with enigmatic instructions.

Lillis’ character goes on to light a few candles, and that’s where the creep factor rapidly expands. By the time someone–or something–enters the room behind Lillis’ character, she’s too frightened to run before it lays its hands upon her.

Udo Kier and Hunter Schafer will co-star in the game alongside Lillis, but details about their characters have yet to be disclosed. However, Kojima Productions did confirm that the hyper-realistic character models and the game itself were created with Unreal Engine.

OD doesn’t currently have a release date, but it will be published by Xbox Game Studios. While that doesn’t necessarily rule out a PS5 release, that is yet to be confirmed. Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya recently shared his wish for Kojima to make a P.T.-like game, and it appears that he got his wish.

Kojima’s OD just got 3 minutes worth of in-engine footage, and it’s definitely following in the footsteps of P.T.

A new trailer for OD, embedded above, was shown today during a livestream celebrating the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions. Xbox head Phil Spencer joined Hideo Kojima on stage to present the video, which shows in-engine footage from Unreal Engine 5.

The footage shows what could be the protagonist, played by Sophia Lillis, entering a morbid-looking room, and approaching a maudlin little table with an elaborate candle display. As they start to light the candles, weird, scary stuff starts to happen.

Kojima reiterated how the game will blur games and film, without going into any specifics on exactly how. Spencer’s comments were similarly unhelpful: he said that OD was innovating “in gameplay, story and player engagement”. Microsoft is offering technical support on the project.

It certainly looks a lot like P.T. The sound design is deliciously oppressive, and the footage is mostly first-person. Kojima wouldn’t be drawn on how far into development the game is, so that’s completely up in the air for now.

OD will bear the subtitle Knock, which Kojima explained has everything to do with his fear of knocking (and I think P.T. bears that out). Despite the video’s focus on lighting candles, Kojima also insisted—via a translator—that it’s “not a game about lighting candles” and that “you’ll probably poo in your pants or whatever.”

Announced in 2023, OD will feature Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier.
