CSGOEmpire owner Monarch loses $19M in the largest public poker game ever

by admin August 20, 2025

The biggest poker match ever streamed played out on YouTube as Counter-Strike mogul Ossi ‘Monarch’ Ketola battled poker legend Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates in a marathon session that ended with Monarch dropping $19 million.

Broadcast live on Onyx Live’s YouTube channel from Merit Royal Diamond on August 19, the spectacle featured six nosebleed stakes matches with buy-ins climbing as high as €5 million. Thousands tuned in as the pair collided in what is now being called the largest public poker game in history.

Cates struck first in a €2 million opener, but Monarch bounced back in the next two contests, including a €3 million buy-in where he steamrolled Jungleman with back-to-back coolers and some fearless bluffs.

Record pots and brutal swings

As the night escalated, so did the buy-ins. The two traded massive blows, including a €2.8 million pot where Monarch flopped quads against Cates’ full house.

The games continued, with Jungleman pulling off an impressive bluff with 5-3, making Monarch fold his pair of Aces.

Not long after, they battled in a staggering €7.7 million hand, the largest pot of the entire session.

Despite Monarch holding the lead at that point, the tide soon turned. Jungleman locked in key pots down the stretch, winning four of the six matches and leaving with a €13 million profit, equal to around $15 million USD.

For Monarch, he ended up losing $19M throughout the marathon in one of the most expensive single-night defeats ever publicly witnessed in poker. Still, the CSGOEmpire founder isn’t exactly strapped for cash.

“lol rip ~$19m in one sitting,” he commented on X following the stream. “Worth the content though.”

The Finnish entrepreneur has been running businesses since he was 14 and built his fortune in 2016 when he launched the Counter-Strike skin gambling site that exploded in popularity.

While Jungleman walked away with the glory, the night cemented both players in poker history and gave fans a rare glimpse at the highest stakes the game has ever seen.

Nexus Mods’ new owner is a company whose co-founder has already had to reassure folks that NFTs and crypto aren’t incoming

by admin June 17, 2025

Yesterday, modding site Nexus Mods announced a change in ownership that’ll see its founder step back. Not much info was provided in the announcement as to who the new owners were, but it’s now been confirmed to be a company called Chosen.

As we reported yesterday, the ownership change announcement penned by Nexus mods founder Robin ‘Dark0ne’ Scott didn’t go into much detail as to the identity of those being handed the reigns. A Victor and a Marinus were cited as having “come on board to lead this next chapter”, along with links to their Nexus Mods profiles that only offered brief bios.

We reached out to Nexus Mods yesterday in order to try and learn more about the identity of the new owners, and were provided with a statement by community lead Mathew Elliott.

“We didn’t go into too much detail about the new ownership in the initial post, but the community has been quick to put on their investigator hats, digging into the new owners’ identities, backgrounds, beliefs, even their favorite football teams, and speculating on what this might mean for modding,” it said, “A bit of Reddit or Twitter sleuthing will surface most of what they’ve found.” It added that the new owners are “very hands-on and are now embedded directly with the team in our offices.”

The community sleuthing Elliott referenced was this ResetEra thread, which saw users RandomlyRandom67 and chocobalt conclude that the new owners are a company called Chosen, with co-founders Victor Folmann and Marinus Elgaard believed to be the Victor and Marinus referred to in Scott’s post. This has now been confirmed via a stickied comment on Scott’s original post.

In it, Folmann, Elgaard, and Nikolaj Nyholm address Scott’s post not mentioning Chosen by name, writing: “This post wasn’t about Chosen — it was about Robin and the legacy he built over 24 years. We’re the new owners and ultimate decision-makers at Nexus Mods. We’ll share more about ourselves when we’ve earned that right. For now, we’re focused on listening, learning, and making modding even easier, and yes, you’ll see us around in the community being active.”

The trio assert that they don’t plan to start charging for mods or revoking lifetime premium subscriptions, adding in terms of monetisation in general: “We’re not changing the core model. No aggressive monetisation. No paid mods. If anything, we’re aiming for fewer ads, not more.”

Chosen, which was only founded in January 2025, state their aim as being to “partner with founders to help scale what they’ve built—amplifying their impact, supporting their team and culture, and ensuring the business thrives for the long term.” Basically, they look to be in the business of buying into or buying up community-focused platforms (their website cites previous work with the likes of EA FC community databases FUTBIN and RenderZ), and running them, with founders offered the chance to stay on board or take a “quick, straightforward exit” that Chosen claim shouldn’t leave them worrying about their creation going down the pan.

Folmann’s LinkedIn activity came under scrutiny following the aforementioned ResetEra sleuthing, including a ‘Gaming startup monetisation cheat sheet’ that mentions NFTs and crypto, originally posted seven months ago. When a commenter fretted about these features being added to Nexus Mods, Folmann responded “100% agree — not happening”.

Another post from four months ago sees him predict that in 2025 “AI will enable solo devs to create $100M hits and 2-person teams to build AAA games”, and claim “AI-powered modding will revolutionise game development”.

We’ve reached out to Nexus Mods and Chosen for comment.

It’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out, but originally announcing the ownership change in a way that left folks needing to do some pretty in-depth detective work to find out exactly who was taking over seems a strange and counterproductive move on Nexus Mods’ part, at least from a PR perspective.

35 Years Ago Today, Garfield’s Owner (Didn’t) Drink Dog Semen

by admin June 1, 2025

On May 30, 1990, the world received a new Garfield comic strip. This isn’t a big deal. We’ve been getting daily Garfield comic strips since 1978. We got a new one today! But 35 years ago, a single Garfield comic strip became one of the most infamous in the franchise’s history because a lot of people thought it depicted the lazy cat’s owner drinking dog semen.

Here’s the Garfield comic strip that appeared in newspapers around the country exactly 35 years ago today:

So yeah, that does seem like Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle just drank some dog semen that was sitting in a cup while trying to flirt (unsuccessfully) with veterinarian Liz. That would explain why she mentions that Jon should expect a “fine, healthy litter of puppies” and why he appears to have consumed something truly revolting.

And that’s what a lot of people thought after seeing the comic in 1990. For many, many years, Garfield fans and people who like weird facts would spread the story of Jon drinking dog semen around the web as people reacted in disbelief or assumed the strip was altered. And even if you chose to believe that Garfield creator Jim Davis didn’t intend the joke to be about dog semen, there wasn’t a readily available and funny alternative explanation.

In 2017, we finally got some answers. Buzzfeed contacted Davis and asked him about the dog semen comic strip. And to the disappointment of many, the creator behind the famous comic claimed Mr. Arbuckle didn’t drink dog semen. However, his explanation of the strip is still pretty weird and not very funny.

“On the farm, we used to give first-calf heifers a high-protein supplement to help them deliver healthier calves,” Davis told Buzzfeed. “The supplement was provided by our vet. Since Liz is a vet, I assumed that there would be a similar supplement for dogs. There you have it!”

I’m inclined to believe Davis, though it’s still wild to me that nobody involved with the Garfield strip pointed out to the creator how the comic could be misinterpreted. I also find it strange that Davis would assume everyone in the world is familiar with high-protein pre-natal cow supplements and would understand that this random comic was referencing that very specific concept.

In 2017, however, Davis threw a wrench in the works when someone allegedly bought a signed copy of the infamous strip. And included on the artwork was a message from Davis: “These events are canon.”

You know what, I changed my mind. I think 35 years ago Jon Davis wanted to see if he could get away with making a comic about a dude drinking dog semen, and pulled it off, but can never admit it without destroying Garfield’s brand. But Davis, it’s 2025. The world is weird and loves this kind of shit now. If you admitted it, you could make shirts about it, and make even more money than you already have. So I say fuck it. It’s been nearly four decades. Admit the truth, Jim, and profit.
