US Housing Chief Orders Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac to Prepare for Crypto Assessment in Mortgages

by admin June 26, 2025

In brief

  • The FHFA has instructed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to begin preparing to accept cryptocurrency as mortgage assets.
  • Director William Pulte framed the move as aligning with a broader vision of the Trump Administration.
  • The order sparked mixed reactions, with praise for innovation and criticism over restrictions on self-custody.

The U.S. housing market is bracing for a potential shakeup by the crypto industry.

On Wednesday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to begin preparing to accept crypto as a form of mortgage-related payment.

The directive, announced on X by FHFA Director William Pulte, marks the first major move to incorporate digital assets into the federal mortgage system.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are U.S. government-backed firms that buy mortgages from lenders, package them into securities, and guarantee payments to investors.

The announcement comes two days after Pulte said he instructed the companies to study how crypto might factor into mortgage qualification.

“After significant studying, and in keeping with President Trump’s vision to make the U.S. the crypto capital of the world, today I ordered the Great Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to prepare their businesses to count cryptocurrency as an asset for a mortgage,” Pulte wrote in a post on X. “So ordered.”

According to the directive, the FHFA found that allowing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to consider more types of borrower assets, such as crypto, could help them better evaluate loan risk and expand access to homeownership for qualified borrowers.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are now tasked with determining how crypto can be treated as a qualifying asset.

Pulte did not specify which cryptos would be accepted. Reactions on X were mixed, with some praising the move as a win for the industry.

“Bitcoin has been recognized as a reserve asset by the U.S. housing system,” Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor wrote on X. “A defining moment for institutional BTC adoption and collateral recognition.”

Others criticized a stipulation requiring crypto assets to be held on centralized exchanges, not self-custody wallets.

“Each Enterprise is directed to consider only cryptocurrency assets that can be evidenced and stored on a U.S.-regulated centralized exchange subject to all applicable laws,” the FHFA wrote.

At the same time, Housecoin, a housing-themed meme coin on the Solana blockchain, jumped 20% today to $0.24 in response to the news.

“1 House = 1 Housecoin has never sounded so good,” the Housecoin account said on X.

The FHFA did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

Popular third-party Switch 2 case suffers manufacturing defect in small number of orders, producer promises it’s “working on it”

by admin June 24, 2025

Popular gaming peripheral manufacturer Dbrand has acknowledged a defect affecting a small number of its Project Killswitch Nintendo Switch 2 cases.

This defect impacts the lip attaching the joycons to the Switch 2 screen, disconnecting when the console is held up by a singular joycon. Speaking to influencer Nintendo Prime, the company has stated it’s in the process of fixing the issue.

“Yep, we’re definitely working on it. Ultimately, this is a manufacturing tolerance issue on the small lip keeping the Joy-Con Grips attached to the Joy-Cons (some were a hair too thick),” Dbrand told Nintendo Prime. “We’ve got a replacement program set up already, where anyone who is affected is able to email robots@dbrand.com with ‘July Joy-Cons’ in the subject to be added to the list for replacement stock in July.”

According to Nintendo Prime, Dbrand also acknowledged this problem was replicable among a “small number of units from their run”. Nintendo Prime didn’t share the exact number he was told, but reemphasised any defective Killswitch cases could be replaced for free in July.

There are plenty of great third-party accessories for the Nintendo Switch 2 – Dbrand’s Killswitch included! These enhance the play experience on what is already a pretty rad console. The only real negative being the battery life, which can drain fairly quickly.

The Switch 2 has proven so tempting, one bloke pilfered over $10,000 worth of Switch games from libraries, one can only assume because he was so excited to play them all on more powerful hardware. It’s not like third-party publishers couldn’t do with the help, as their games struggle to ship in spite of record breaking console sales.

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Orders Citizens to Buy Bitcoin: Fact Check

by admin May 31, 2025

A viral video circulating on social media claims to show North Korean leader Kim Jong Un delivering an “emotional” speech about Bitcoin. In the video, Kim looks like he’s ordering people to buy Bitcoin at all costs. He seems to be saying: “Take all your money, buy Bitcoin, then take all your time, figure out how to borrow more money to buy more Bitcoin.”

Is North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Urging People to Buy Bitcoin?

However, this is not an authentic clip of Kim Jong Un. The video is a deepfake that mismatches visuals of the North Korean leader with audio from a speech made by Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor.

“There is no second best crypto asset,” the voice says in the video. The video adds, “There’s a crypto asset, it’s called Bitcoin, right? There is no second best, okay?”

The original audio comes from a widely shared clip of Saylor promoting Bitcoin as the superior digital asset. In this speech, he also declares: “Go mortgage your house and buy Bitcoin with it.”

The mismatch between the lip movements and the audio in the video, combined with the known source of the speech, confirms the clip is fake. It’s most likely that Deepfake technology used to overlay Saylor’s words onto the footage of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

This video is a clear example of misinformation in the crypto community. Thus, viewers are urged to verify sources before sharing sensational content. Hence, it’s important to note that the actual speaker in the video is Michael Saylor, not Kim Jong Un.

Scalpers waste McDonald’s orders to collect anime Happy Meal toys

by admin May 22, 2025

McDonald’s scalpers in Japan are wasting tons of orders just to collect Happy Meal toys, which are selling for big bucks on eBay.

McDonald’s Japan doesn’t just have a new ‘Grand’ size fries and drinks available. The chain also has Happy Meals based on the manga series turned anime ‘Chiikawa.’

In just two days, as per People, the Chiikawa toys were completely sold out throughout the region as customers flocked to collect the Happy Meal items. The meals contained goodies such as cups, eraser heads and other nods to the collab.

However, in order to get their hands on the Happy Meal toys, customers have been forgoing the food and creating a slew of waste in the process.

Viral video reveals wasted Happy Meals as McDonald’s scalpers collect toys

Happy Meals in Japan, referred to as ‘Happy Sets,’ contain either chicken nuggets, a hamburger or pancakes along with a side of fries, salad or edamame and corn and a drink.

Resellers are also trying to make a huge profit on eBay, with some listings for the Happy Meal toys being over $80.

McDonald’s says they hadn’t anticipated the demand for the toys and that sales had “far exceeded expectations.” Additionally, the chain apologized for “not meeting the expectations of customers.”

A second release of the Chiikawa items is slated for May 23.

Customers going wild over McDonald’s toys isn’t a new phenomenon. In January 2025, a run of Pokemon promo cards were released and resold at prices from $600 to $800 USD.
