Optimism has unveiled plans for its next major network upgrade which aims to boost safety and flexibility across its ecosystem. The upgrade is described as a maintenance release that improves developer tools and prepares the groundwork for future features.

In an announcement shared via X on Sept. 19, the team said the upgrade would go live on the Superchain Sepolia testnet on Sept. 22 and reach the Superchain Mainnet on Oct. 2, pending governance approval by the Optimism Collective.

Optimism’s focus on safety and flexibility

Upgrade 16a replaces the earlier Upgrade 16, which had included withdrawal-proving logic that was never activated on mainnet. Optimism (OP) has now taken that code out of production paths in response to partner feedback, leaving it in the repository for use when interoperability features are prepared for deployment.

System-level feature toggles are a significant addition that enable new features to be turned on or off per chain without influencing other network nodes. ETHLockbox will be the first feature governed by this mechanism, with potential future applications including custom gas tokens.

Upgrade 16a also includes feature flags for developers to safely test interoperability in non-production environments, making sure that live chains are not affected by experimental code.

Smoother upgrade path for chains

To streamline adoption, Optimism has updated its OP Contracts Manager. Chains currently on Upgrade 15 can now move directly to 16a, while those already on Upgrade 16 can migrate seamlessly without disruption. Crucially, the modifications don’t impact end-user behavior or withdrawal proofs, highlighting Optimism’s methodical, modular approach to growth.

The upgrade comes as Optimism continues its push to position its Superchain framework as a crucial hub for Ethereum’s (ETH) growth. Its reach has been increased through partnerships with projects like Base, Ronin, and Unichain, while recent collaborations with Succinct Labs and Flashbots indicate a growing focus on fault-proofing, sequencing flexibility, and zero-knowledge technology.

At the time of writing, OP was trading at $0.835, up 1.2% on the day and 6% over the past week, with a market capitalization of about $1.49 billion.

XRP price reclaims $3 level as market optimism holds

XRP (XRP) price has reclaimed the $3, a key psychological level, showing continued optimism in its performance. On Wednesday, September 10, XRP’s price was up 1.1%, trading at around $3, with $4.35 billion in daily volume. Its current price puts XRP at a market cap of $178.26 billion, firmly in third place among all crypto assets.

Despite ongoing market volatility, traders still bet on ETF demand as the strongest potential catalyst for its price. Currently, the Securities and Exchange Commission is set to decide on 15 XRP ETFs. These funds, if market demand follows, could have a strong impact on the demand for XRP.

What is more, the demand seems to be there. Notably, the CME Group’s XRP futures contracts hit $1 billion in open interest in just three months, faster than those of any crypto asset. This metric, typically a strong indication of ETF demand, suggests strong institutional interest.

XRP ETF remains the biggest catalyst

Still, the earliest of these decisions, ones for CoinShares, 21Shares, Canary Capital, and Grayscale XRP ETFs, is set for October 19. That is, unless the agency delays the decision again, as it has done multiple times in the past. Most recently, the agency has extended the deadline for its decision on Franklin Templeton XRP ETF to November 14.

Still, the odds for an XRP ETF approval are very high, and Polymarket traders currently put the odds of approval at 92% by the end of 2025. If this prediction holds, XRP could be set for some of the biggest gains among top crypto assets in the coming months.

Optimism Taps Flashbots to Supercharge OP Stack Sequencing

Optimism is teaming up with Flashbots to revamp how transactions get processed across its OP Stack ecosystem, aiming to make some of Ethereum’s most popular layer-2 networks faster and more customizable.

The partnership centers on sequencing, the behind-the-scenes process that determines how quickly a transaction confirms, which trades are prioritized, and how much users ultimately pay. Optimism says Flashbots’ infrastructure, which is already responsible for building more than 90% of Ethereum’s blocks, will now bring near-instant confirmations and user-friendly transaction ordering to every chain in the so-called Superchain.

This matters because the OP Stack underpins more than 60% of all Ethereum layer 2 activity, the Optimism team claims, including some of the most well-known layer-2 chains like Base, Unichain, World Chain, Ink and Soneium. Until now, advanced sequencing features such as ultra-fast settlement, frontrunning protection and custom compliance rules were only available to the largest chains with resources to build them in-house. With Flashbots on board, those features will be available via tools for any project building on Optimism’s OP stack.

Flashbots is best known for its work on MEV, or maximal extractable value, where its MEV-Boost tool has reshaped how blocks are produced.

Some of Flashbots’ sequencing technology is already live on OP Stack chains: Base and Unichain use “Flashblocks” to deliver block times as low as 200 milliseconds, while Unichain and World Chain are experimenting with verifiable transaction ordering and priority blockspace, which proves transactions are ordered fairly and prevents frontrunning.

In the coming months, Optimism and Flashbots plan to roll out the flashblocks and advanced sequencing R&D to Optimism’s mainnet and other chains using the OP Stack.

“With Flashbots as a core technology partner, we’re accelerating the roadmap for fast, cheap, and customizable sequencing across the OP Stack,” said Sam McIngvale, head of product at OP Labs. “This is part of our broader mission: giving builders the freedom to design their chains their way, with infrastructure that’s open, flexible, and battle-tested in production.”
