Black Ops 7’s co-op campaign culminates in a DMZ-like ‘Endgame’ activity for 32 players in an open-world map, plus it has unlockable weapon camos

by admin August 20, 2025

Call of Duty is aiming for its next campaign to be a part of the “connected” experience of the overall live-service game, starting with Black Ops 7.

During a media briefing event last week, Treyarch revealed that the BO7 campaign is playable for up to four players in co-op, played over 11 standard, explosive set-piece missions. Not only that, but you will be able to unlock campaign-specific weapon camos (including four Mastery camos), reticles, player cards, and other cosmetics, all while earning XP to progress your overall level and even individual battle passes. There will even be daily and weekly challenges to complete.

The campaign stars David Mason and his Spectre One team, including Mike Harper, Eric Samuels, and newcomer Leilani Tupuola, with support from BO6 character Troy Marshall who is now several decades older in this story. Some sort of red, hallucinogenic gas seems to be the main catalyst for weird visions and trippy missions, given what little gameplay I was shown.

Once that story’s 11 standard missions are completed, however, a new “Endgame” experience will unlock, featuring an open-world Avalon map for up to 32 players to explore and fight enemies in. Gamers will be able to fly into the battle royale map-like zone to fight AI soldiers and robots, complete missions, and rank up their operators with new abilities and a level-up system called Combat Rating.

Increasing your Combat Rating (max level 60) will give players access to higher-tier areas of the map, but here’s the catch: if you die, you wipe and have to start all over again, similar to games like Modern Warfare II’s DMZ mode or Escape From Tarkov. That’s right, wiping as a squad will reset your progress for that operator.

Each individual, playable operator also has their own abilities and skill specializations that can be unlocked and leveled up, such as a Grapple Hook, Mega Jump, or Drone Charmer that spawns quad-rotor drones to take down enemies.

Treyarch says that Endgame will be the “final proving ground where all of your campaign progress is tested in a new environment.” Progress is tied to “shutting down Guild activities” as you “move into the hardest regions.”

A lot about Endgame is still being kept secret for now, but players looking to expand their BO7 experience and unlock everything it has to offer may find some real fun in this new co-op experience to play alongside multiplayer and Zombies modes.

BO7 launches for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC later this year.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is, unexpectedly, getting an open-world roguelike mode

by admin June 20, 2025

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time – the sequel to developer Level 5’s 2012 Nintendo DS life sim and RPG thing – is getting a bunch of free DLC, which we already knew. What we weren’t previously aware of, however, is that its DLC will include an open-world roguelike mode.

It’s not entirely clear why a relatively laidback, job-focused life sim RPG would want to get in on the roguelike action, but that’s what Level 5 is going for. As detailed in its announcement blog, the update – which is currently “actively underway” – will feature an “evolved version of Ginormosia, including a system blending roguelike and open-world elements”.

Level 5’s announcement stops short of explaining how the new mode will actually work, but it does say the update will include “engaging content for both experienced players and newcomers alike.” Additionally, the update promises “powerful new gear”, plus “stylish equipment, mounts, and a variety of unusual items.” A telephone made of butts immediately springs to mind, but I suspect I’m likely to be disappointed.

And we’re not quite done yet. Fantasy Life i’s free DLC update will also include a brand-new character who’ll “leave a significant mark on the world”, plus new hairstyles and new emotes to “make it even more enjoyable for players to express themselves in-game”. As for when all this will show up, Level 5 says “as soon as possible”.

“Level 5 appreciates everyone’s continued support and remains committed to continuously refining Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time,” it concludes in its announcement post, “as well as expanding content to provide the best possible gaming experience.”

Why all this free DLC? That’ll be down to Fantasy Life i’s impressive sales, with the game having already shifted 1m copies since its release at the end of May. Level 5 is also celebrating the milestone with a “commemorative gift code” that’ll unlock an “exclusive piece of equipment”, plus a “commemorative Pegasus mount” – although its post profusely apologises for mistakenly giving players on certain platforms a unicorn instead. That error should now be fixed, alas.

And if you’d like to bump that sales number up to 1m and one, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is available now on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2.

Tire Boy is a wacky open-world adventure game you can tread all over

by admin June 7, 2025

One of the best things about an indie game showcase is that you’ll see at least one preview that makes you think “huh?” and “lol!” in equal parts. For the Day of the Devs presentation at Summer Games Fest 2025, Tire Boy definitely fits the bill. Mechanics-wise, it’s an open-world action-adventure game, which is pretty standard fare. However, like the name says, you play it all out as a tiny anthropomorphized tire. It looks super goofy, but in a way that might also be super great.

The trio from GameTeam6 who presented the early build of the game explained that they wanted to do some odd things with scale in the world, and that’s definitely been accomplished. Most other characters tower over little Tire Boy, whether they’re a friendly owl, an enemy frog or just a really big heckin bunny. But there’s also some sweetness promised as Tire Boy tries to uncover the secrets of his past and his tire people. It’s the sort of wacky combination that can be a lot of fun in practice.

The studio has a ways to go before it’s ready to play; they didn’t suggest any time frames for a demo or release window, but Tire Boy can be wishlisted on Steam if you want to keep tabs on this quirky project.

Back 2 School is an open-world puzzle game spanning the whole campus

by admin June 6, 2025

If you’ve ever dreamed of being a student at a school built entirely out of escape rooms and silly puns, Coin Crew has the game just for you. Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is heading to PC in 2026, and it’s available now to wishlist on Steam. It’s the sequel to Escape Academy, which is one of our absolute favorite puzzle games in recent years, particularly when played as a couch co-op experience.

Escape Academy 2 expands the campus into an open world, allowing players to explore and uncover secrets between classes, ramping up the student role-playing vibe. Coin Crew also drew inspiration from games like Animal Well and The Legend of Zelda series, which incorporate riddles and mysteries into the standard exploration gameplay loop, creating a free-roaming puzzle flow.

The original Escape Academy attracted more than 4 million players, and the sequel appears to be even bigger and radder. There’s no release date for now, but Coin Crew is looking for playtesters through its Discord channel. The Escape Academy series is published by iam8bit, and the sequel was revealed during the Day of the Devs showcase tied to Summer Game Fest 2025.
