End of an era: Nexus Mods has change in ownership after 24 years following “stress-related health issues”

by admin June 18, 2025

Nexus Mods has new ownership after 24 years under the stewardship of website founder Dark0ne.

Nexus Mods stands as the largest hub for video game mods for PC users, with a library of 716,500 mods across 3,768 games.

In an official blog post Dark0ne, who founded Nexus Mods back in 2001, explained what will change as well as why he decided to step away from the modding giant, linking “stress-related health issues” with his ownership.

Here’s our video on some of the best Oblivion mods you can’t live without.Watch on YouTube

“I realised that I have been burning out and this started to have an impact on my staff and Nexus Mods as a whole,” wrote Dark0ne. “So, I firmly believe that the best thing for the future of Nexus Mods is for me to step aside and bring in new leadership to steer the business forward with renewed energy to make Nexus Mods the modding community we all truly deserve.”

In a section titled “What Changes Now?” Dark0ne stated not much will differ for users, and introduced new owners Victor, Marinus, and Nikolai as the trio who’ll be steering the ship going forward. The blog only links to their Nexus Mods accounts page, rather than any information on previous business experience.

This post led some users to dig in a little further. RandomlyRandom67 on ResetEra did some digging and found the Linkedin profiles of several Danes who share the names of those mentioned in the blog post. This group works at a growth-focused gaming company called Chosen. On Marinus Elgaard’s Linkedin page, he wrote “Working closely with teams at NexusMods and beyond to build meaningful, sustainable experiences” under his experience history at Chosen

Looking at Chosen’s Linkedin page, four staff named Victor, Marinus, Nikolai, and Nikolaj can be found, further confirmation that Chosen is the company seemingly now in charge of Nexus Mods’ future.

This has worried Nexus Mod users, not only due to the growth-focused mission statement at the heart of Chosen, but prior statements from Chosen’s Victor Folmann on monetisation. This LinkedIn post champions the merits of in-app purchases, sponsorship, and more.

On an attached monetisation “cheat sheet” in that same post, a play-to-earn monetisation model is listed as an approach, which spooked some users. However Victor, in response to a comment on the monetisation post stating, “If you add NFTs or crypto to Nexus, you’ll kill the culture and community”, replied “100 percent agree – not happening”.

As an interesting aside, that fourth name on Chosen’s Linkedin page is especially interesting. Nikolaj is none other than Nikolaj Nyholm! One of the stars of the Danish Dragon’s Den, and founder of Danish esports team Astralis, best known for its Counter Strike team. Astralis isn’t doing especially hot right now, and is reportedly looking for buyers and investors. Nyholm’s involvement in Chosen is one of a founder and investor, as he puts the world of esports in his back pocket. The one without any money in it.

So it’s all a little doom and gloom right now in the world of modding. Concerns stem from the involvement of a growth-focused company, involvement which could lead to changes that impact the users of gaming’s biggest mod platform, in spite of Dark0ne’s sentiment in his farewell post. The ball is in Chosen’s court, to keep the website on the straight and narrow, aligned with the legacy of Nexus Mods, or ultimately prove the critics right.

Nexus Mods’ new owner is a company whose co-founder has already had to reassure folks that NFTs and crypto aren’t incoming

by admin June 17, 2025

Yesterday, modding site Nexus Mods announced a change in ownership that’ll see its founder step back. Not much info was provided in the announcement as to who the new owners were, but it’s now been confirmed to be a company called Chosen.

As we reported yesterday, the ownership change announcement penned by Nexus mods founder Robin ‘Dark0ne’ Scott didn’t go into much detail as to the identity of those being handed the reigns. A Victor and a Marinus were cited as having “come on board to lead this next chapter”, along with links to their Nexus Mods profiles that only offered brief bios.

We reached out to Nexus Mods yesterday in order to try and learn more about the identity of the new owners, and were provided with a statement by community lead Mathew Elliott.

“We didn’t go into too much detail about the new ownership in the initial post, but the community has been quick to put on their investigator hats, digging into the new owners’ identities, backgrounds, beliefs, even their favorite football teams, and speculating on what this might mean for modding,” it said, “A bit of Reddit or Twitter sleuthing will surface most of what they’ve found.” It added that the new owners are “very hands-on and are now embedded directly with the team in our offices.”

The community sleuthing Elliott referenced was this ResetEra thread, which saw users RandomlyRandom67 and chocobalt conclude that the new owners are a company called Chosen, with co-founders Victor Folmann and Marinus Elgaard believed to be the Victor and Marinus referred to in Scott’s post. This has now been confirmed via a stickied comment on Scott’s original post.

In it, Folmann, Elgaard, and Nikolaj Nyholm address Scott’s post not mentioning Chosen by name, writing: “This post wasn’t about Chosen — it was about Robin and the legacy he built over 24 years. We’re the new owners and ultimate decision-makers at Nexus Mods. We’ll share more about ourselves when we’ve earned that right. For now, we’re focused on listening, learning, and making modding even easier, and yes, you’ll see us around in the community being active.”

The trio assert that they don’t plan to start charging for mods or revoking lifetime premium subscriptions, adding in terms of monetisation in general: “We’re not changing the core model. No aggressive monetisation. No paid mods. If anything, we’re aiming for fewer ads, not more.”

Chosen, which was only founded in January 2025, state their aim as being to “partner with founders to help scale what they’ve built—amplifying their impact, supporting their team and culture, and ensuring the business thrives for the long term.” Basically, they look to be in the business of buying into or buying up community-focused platforms (their website cites previous work with the likes of EA FC community databases FUTBIN and RenderZ), and running them, with founders offered the chance to stay on board or take a “quick, straightforward exit” that Chosen claim shouldn’t leave them worrying about their creation going down the pan.

Folmann’s LinkedIn activity came under scrutiny following the aforementioned ResetEra sleuthing, including a ‘Gaming startup monetisation cheat sheet’ that mentions NFTs and crypto, originally posted seven months ago. When a commenter fretted about these features being added to Nexus Mods, Folmann responded “100% agree — not happening”.

Another post from four months ago sees him predict that in 2025 “AI will enable solo devs to create $100M hits and 2-person teams to build AAA games”, and claim “AI-powered modding will revolutionise game development”.

We’ve reached out to Nexus Mods and Chosen for comment.

It’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out, but originally announcing the ownership change in a way that left folks needing to do some pretty in-depth detective work to find out exactly who was taking over seems a strange and counterproductive move on Nexus Mods’ part, at least from a PR perspective.

Creator Of Nexus Mods Sells To Mysterious Buyer After 24 Years

by admin June 17, 2025

Nexus Mods is changing hands. The vast database for free mods of PC games ranging from The Witcher 3 to Stardew Valley has been sold for the first time since it was created 24 years ago. “The strain of being responsible for the behemoth I created has taken its toll,” previous owner Dark0ne wrote in an update on Monday. “The stress of the job has been a regular source of anxiety and stress-related health issues.”

The Top 10 Most-Played Games On Steam Deck: November 2023 Edition

Nexus Mods is where thousands of modders go to share their creations. Whenever a new game comes out, be it big like Monster Hunter Wilds or small like Blue Prince, mods quickly become available on Nexus for everything from helping with inventory management to enhancing visuals. It’s been a cornerstone of PC gaming for many players for decades now, though Dark0ne suggested nothing much will change in the day-to-day now that he’s no longer running it.

“I started this project back in 2001, in my bedroom, with a 56k modem, an excitement for the upcoming release of Morrowind and with no grand ambitions or intentions,” he wrote in an update on the Nexus Mods website. “I didn’t set out to build a business, I just wanted to make a place where modders could share their work without worrying it would vanish into the internet either [sic] the next time a fansite went offline or a publisher decided they were done with it. That idea grew legs, sprouted arms, and turned into Nexus Mods.”

Dark0ne said he’s been looking for someone else to take over management of Nexus Mods for a while now due to all the stress of running a small online social network, but it wasn’t until recently that he found someone to take over who “really ‘gets’ the modding community the way I do.” He didn’t reveal who that someone is, though, or the price tag for the deal. Is Nexus Mods about to get way worse? Some users are already freaking out about paid subscriptions coming. Dark0ne claims not much will change in the immediate future, though.

“Behind the scenes, I’ve already been stepping back bit by bit,” he wrote. “Over the past few years, the team has taken on more of the weight and the site’s been doing better than ever. What’s changing now is simply the formality of it, making sure the right people are in place to guide Nexus Mods into the next era. That includes some structural updates to the company ownership that we aren’t shouting about, but I want to be transparent: they’re about long-term stability, not changing the values or direction of the platform. Nexus Mods is community-first and mod-author focused, that’s not up for negotiation.”

Some shifts have already been underway at Nexus Mods, which is run by a team of 40 people. A big one was moving to ease rules on modders getting paid for their work. Some modders now link to Patreons and other places where people can donate to them directly for ongoing updates to certain popular mods in games like Starfield and Elden Ring. Nexus Mods community managers said at the time that the goal was to find a way to balance compensation incentives with the desire to keep the modding scene free and open, even as companies like Bethesda try to monetize creator work in their games.

Nexus Mods has also recently taken stands again bigotry. The site refused to host a Starfield mod back in 2023 that deleted pronoun options from the game. Nexus Mods told 404 Media at the time that it wasn’t meant as a political statement, but as a way to protect its users. “[The] removal of diversity, while appealing to many, does not promote a positive modding community,” they said.

Nexus Mods announce ownership change, but the folks taking over remain a bit mysterious

by admin June 16, 2025

Massive modding site Nexus Mods have announced a change in ownership, with founder Robin ‘Dark0ne’ Scott set to step back. As to who the new owners are, a couple of first names and modding profiles have been provided, as well as an assertion that these new overlords understand what makes Nexus Mods tick.

Scott – who founded the site as the Elder Scrolls-focused TES Nexus in 2001, and has owned it via his company Black Tree Gaming since 2007 – announced the news via a post on Nexus Mods.

“The strain of being responsible for the behemoth I created has taken its toll,” Scott wrote, “The stress of the job has been a regular source of anxiety and stress-related health issues. I realised that I have been burning out and this started to have an impact on my staff and Nexus Mods as a whole.

“So, I firmly believe that the best thing for the future of Nexus Mods is for me to step aside and bring in new leadership to steer the business forward with renewed energy to make Nexus Mods the modding community we all truly deserve.”

Following “months of meetings, face-to-face talks, and a whole lot of soul searching”, he believes he’s found new ownership that will “understand and respect the myriad intricacies of both Nexus Mods as a business and the wider modding community”.

Scott added: “I want to be clear, this isn’t some corporate “exit” or a backroom deal. This is me doing something I probably should’ve done years ago: taking care of myself.”

So, who’s taking over Nexus Mods? Well, further on in the post, Scott introduces folks called Victor and Marinus, linking to their Nexus Mods profiles under the handles Foledinho and Rapsak, and revealing that they’ve “come on board to lead this next chapter”.

“They’ve got deep roots in gaming, tech, and most importantly, they give a damn; about the site, the community, and the future we’re trying to build here,” he wrote, later adding “they’re about long-term stability, not changing the values or direction of the platform.”

Taking a look at the profiles of these two, whose full names haven’t been provided, you can see that they’ve been given the same ‘site owner’ tag Scott’s account currently boasts. “For the past decade, I’ve been building platforms in gaming and UGC,” Foledinho’s profile bio says, citing his goal with Nexus Mods as being to “help make modding easier, where games evolve through the hands of players.”

Rapsak, meanwhile, “started producing music on a PlayStation at eight years old and eventually became a DJ, touring internationally and playing shows with music I’d made myself.

“At the same time, I was diving deeper into tech, building PCs at 13, launching my first business at 15 (a DJ booking system), and writing code every chance I got,” he goes on. Rapsak also notes that he only ever wears black T-shirts, which is “not a fashion thing, just one less decision to make in the morning.” Ok then.

We’ve reached out to Nexus Mods for comment.

According to Scott, the ownership change shouldn’t result in much of a change in terms of the day-to-day user experience on Nexus Mods in the near future, with its “team of 40 incredibly dedicated people, some of whom have been here for over nine years” still in place.

Cardano is at the Nexus of Bitcoin DeFi: Charles Hoskinson

by admin June 8, 2025

In a recent interview, Charles Hoskinson stated that Cardano stands “at the nexus” of two major trends, one of which is Bitcoin DeFi being.

He pointed out that although DeFi has predominantly grown on Ethereum and Solana, Bitcoin’s DeFi remains a market that is larger but still untapped.

Hoskinson said Cardano is at the center of Bitcoin DeFi | Source: X

Hoskinson described Bitcoin as a “giant sleeping monstrosity,” saying its DeFi opportunity is about four times bigger than the entire market cap of Solana. In short, Hoskinson wants Cardano to lead the charge in building Bitcoin DeFi on its platform.

“When we look at the DeFi markets, it’s mostly a Solana, Ethereum type of a circle, and we have a little bit of DeFi and others do as well, but that’s really where the center of gravity is,” Hoskinson explained.

Hoskinson talked about this plan in a tweet in January 2025. He listed three main goals for Cardano this year. The first was focused on Bitcoin DeFi, then improving scalability with a new protocol called Ouroboros Leios, and additional connections to other projects like Chainlink.

He said, “Now that we have governance moving along really well, this year I’m going to focus deeply on three big themes for Cardano.”

DeFi, or decentralized finance, first took off on Ethereum and grew rapidly on Solana, which currently holds around $111.3 billion in total value locked (TVL), according to DefiLlama.

Ethereum’s DeFi TVL is the largest at approximately $61.2 billion. But Hoskinson believes the Bitcoin DeFi market is much larger and more promising. His goal is to unlock this potential on Cardano.
