Netflix’s OceanGate documentary to reveal ‘horrifying’ truth behind Titan disaster

by admin May 22, 2025

Netflix just dropped the trailer for its upcoming documentary Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, which is set to shed new light on the doomed deep-sea expedition and the founder of the company, Stockton Rush.

In the early morning of Sunday, June 18, 2023, the Titan submersible began its descent into the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean in a bid to explore the Titanic wreck. Less than two hours later, it lost communication with its mothership – and it never resurfaced.

After days of searching, the vessel was found to have imploded from the pressure of the surrounding waters, killing all five passengers on board: Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Hamish Harding, and Stockton.

Conspiracy theories about what had happened to the sub soon shifted focus to the terrifying conditions on board, but even now there are many questions left unanswered. Filmmaker Mark Monroe is hoping to fill in the gaps with his Netflix documentary.

Netflix documentary to reveal truth behind OceanGate Titan sub disaster

By examining Stockton Rush’s desire to be the next billionaire innovator no matter the cost, Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is set to highlight a terrifying truth: that the incident was completely avoidable.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Monroe said, “When the Titan submersible went missing, I was horrified and mesmerized by the 24/7 news coverage and global social commentary – just like the rest of the world.”

However, the filmmaker pointed out that “there was no context for what could have happened to those onboard, and the only touchpoint was the Titanic, a story that’s now become a grim fairy tale.”

“The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship,” Monroe continued.

“We hope that this film can help provide answers to these very questions.”

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster to feature whistleblower testimony

Netflix

What made the OceanGate disaster especially chilling wasn’t just the loss of life, but the details that followed, revealing it was doomed from the start – not that the passengers ever knew.

The Titan sub was controlled by a modified video game controller, had limited emergency systems, and lacked certification from any recognized safety authority.

The interior was cramped, bolted shut from the outside, and constructed from carbon fiber, an experimental material that experts had repeatedly warned could fail under deep-sea pressure.

Each passenger had paid $250,000 for the voyage – a staggering fee for a journey that ended in tragedy. Now, Netflix’s documentary promises to go beyond the headlines for the first time, and bring long-overdue clarity to what really happened.

As per Netflix, “Through exclusive access to whistleblower testimony, pivotal audio recordings, and footage from the company’s early days, the film provides an unprecedented look at the technical challenges, moral dilemmas, and shockingly poor decisions that culminated in the catastrophic expedition.”

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush called “psychopath”

Netflix

It’s also set to lift the lid on Stockton Rush, with former employees speaking about the working environment. In the new trailer, one talking head says, “He wanted fame. To fuel his ego, fame.”

“I thought Stockton was a borderline psychopath,” states another. “How do you manage a person like that, who owns the company?”

Following the disaster, OceanGate was under deeper scrutiny than ever. The firm ultimately stopped all operations following investigations into the incident. But by this point, it was too late. Stockton and all the passengers died, and there’s no way to reverse what happened.

Monroe went on to say that the new documentary “critiques a segment of society who believe the rules don’t apply to them, and feel well within their rights to break them in the name of something greater.

“The greatest tragedy, and what I hope audiences come to understand, is how this disaster was completely avoidable.”

Where is Brett Favre now? Update on Netflix’s Untold

by admin May 21, 2025

Once hailed as a small-town hero and one of the NFL’s most beloved quarterbacks, Brett Favre is now better known for his ties to the largest welfare scandal in Mississippi history, as is explored in Untold: The Fall of Favre.

Netflix’s Untold is a series of documentaries, with each episode centering on a different true crime case or scandal related to the world of sports. Its latest chapter includes deep dives on the Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton controversy, followed by the Liver King.

Now, it’s focusing on Favre, who rose to fame as the face of the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s and 2000s, earning three consecutive MVP awards and leading the team to a Super Bowl victory in 1997.

As Reverend Reggie Warnsley says in the new documentary, “He threw the pass like he was throwing a 70-yard bomb,” a characteristic that earned Favre the nickname “gunslinger.” However, off the pitch, his reputation has been far more complicated.

Where is Brett Favre now?

Brett Favre is still in his home state of Mississippi, living in a 19,000 square feet, five bedroom house with his wife, Deanna, who he shares two daughters with: Brittany and Breleigh.

Favre has continued to dabble in sports broadcasting and brand endorsements, although some sponsors have quietly distanced themselves. His most recent Instagram post was shared last year when he announced the 2024 movie Concussed, about Super Bowl winner Tyler Sash, with Favre serving as executive producer.

In 2020, he found himself at the center of the Mississippi welfare scandal, whereby a number of high-profile figures allegedly misused at least $77 million that was meant to help the poorest individuals in the state.

Favre was implicated in the scheme, as a state audit revealed that he was paid $1.1 million for speaking events that he didn’t take part in. He was also accused of seeking help to redirect $5 million from the funds to build a volleyball stadium at the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played the sport.

Did he go to prison?

Netflix

Despite the serious allegations tied to the welfare scandal, Favre has not been criminally charged. He has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he was unaware the funds he lobbied for came from money intended for Mississippi’s most vulnerable residents.

However, he was named in a 2022 civil lawsuit by the state, which is seeking to recover millions of misused welfare dollars. Public records show that Favre repaid the $1.1 million he personally received for speeches he never gave, but the state still wants repayment of interest.

The fallout has tarnished Favre’s once squeaky-clean image. While some fans and media figures continue to defend him, others view his role in the scandal – along with past controversies, like the 2008 Jenn Sterger allegations – as part of a broader pattern of misconduct that was historically overlooked due to his star power.

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick says in the Netflix documentary, “People go to jail for stealing money everyday. If it’s that important, the right institutions can get involved. But, you know, some people are untouchable in certain ways and that’s just the way it is.

“I just think that’s kinda how the system is rigged. You know, some situations have to be played out in court. Some have to be played out in the public.”

Favre’s health update

Netflix

Elsewhere in the documentary, it’s revealed that Favre’s revelation of his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis during a congressional hearing in September 2024 added a complex layer to his ongoing narrative. While he framed the announcement as a personal testament to the importance of concussion research, critics have questioned the timing.

Given that the disclosure came amid intense scrutiny over his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of Mississippi welfare funds, some observers viewed it as a strategic move to elicit sympathy and redirect the conversation.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and can lead to tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Favre, who has publicly acknowledged experiencing numerous concussions during his 20-year NFL career, expressed concerns about his future health, stating, “It makes me wonder what the future brings for me.”

As of May 2025, there have been no significant public updates regarding his condition.

In Untold: The Fall of Favre, Jenn Sterger, a former New York Jets employee who accused Favre of sending unsolicited explicit messages in 2008, commented on the broader impact of his actions. “The people that get left in the wake are the victims… we get left in the wake because we were never the story,” she says. “We’re here to service somebody else’s story.”

Avowed game director Carrie Patel departs Obsidian, joins Netflix’s gaming team

by admin May 20, 2025

Carrie Patel, who served as game director on this year’s acclaimed fantasy action-RPG Avowed, has confirmed her departure from Obsidian Entertainment after nearly 12 years with the studio and announced a new role at Netflix.

Patel, who was very much the face of Avowed throughout its development, shared the news in a brief update on LinkedIn, revealing she’s now working within Netflix’s gaming division, having joined Oxenfree developer Night School Studio as a game director.

She offered no further clue as to what she’ll be working on at Night School in her update, but the Oxenfree and Afterparty studio has an impressive track record, despite its limited output since being acquired by Netflix in 2021. It released Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals in 2023 but nothing else until Black Mirror tie-in Thronglets arrived earlier this year – a release that followed an unspecified number of layoffs at Night School in March.

“One of this year’s most pleasant surprises”, we called Avowed.Watch on YouTube

Netflix’s gaming strategy has taken some dramatic shifts in direction since the streaming service’s first tentative steps back in 2021. After an initial focus on mobile titles, it seemed ready to stride into the world of AAA console gaming in 2023, even hitting up longtime Halo creative lead Joseph Staten, Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, and God of War art director Rafael Grassetti to found a new development team.

However, Netflix quietly closed the studio late last year, and is reportedly now focusing on narrative and transmedia projects, on big mainstream IP, on being a trusted destination for families, and on party games played on TVs using mobile phones as a controller. That does, of course, still leave room for Night Studio – and Patel – to continue making the kind of games it does best.

As for Avowed, prior to Patel’s departure from Obsidian, she suggested it wasn’t a one-and-done effort. “Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world,” she explained, “I’d love to see us do more with it.” Next up for Obsidian, though, is The Outer Worlds 2. It’s due later this year, with a special developer deep dive set to air on 8th June following the Xbox Games Showcase.
