Skyblivion project lead says release date reveal’s finally getting “closer”, as Oblivion remake mod shows off revamped intro

by admin August 31, 2025

Watch out, there’s a goblin over there! Have you dispatched him with a deceased Blade’s rusty blade? Good, we can now keep trekking through the revamped Imperial sewers dungeon that unofficial Oblivion remake Skyblivion’s devs have just shown off.

The massive Skyrim mod’s getting ever closer to the release its creators have pencilled in for later this year. Despite that looming, they’ve not opted to skip what’s become an annual cameo at fan-run Skyrim modding showcase Creation Mod Con, alongside a bunch of other in-the-works Elder Scrolls remake projects and add-ons.

I spoke to Skyblivion project lead Kyle ‘Rebelzize’ Rebel ahead of Creation Mod Con about where the modders are at in terms of announcing the mod’s full release date. “Progress is generally good, volunteer based projects are always a challenge due to people sometimes dropping out or not having as much time to contribute as in the past,” he told me. “To work around that we try as much as possible to keep the project a bit flexible and change our MVP (minimum viable product) according to the team’s capability. I’d say recent developments made us come closer to a potential date announcement, but we will be able to share more about that at a later date.”

The team also revealed that in addition to the GOG release they announced back in June, a release via Nexus Mods is also locked in and there are plans to offer the mod for free via Steam too. I’m intrigued to see how that last one might differ from the other two.

Watch on YouTube

Anyway, the modders showed off the opening 15 minutes of Skyblivion in this latest showcase. Big spoiler alert – the sequence sees some youths in hoodies harass Patrick Stewart into freeing Nirn’s ugliest prisoner before departing to go and voice a sentient poo in the Emoji Movie several years down the line.

I’m not joking about it being Patrick Stewart that does this, as shown a recent dev diary, Skyblivion’s Uriel Septim is his regal spitting image. As for the iconic series of corridors in which he’s shanked up while you decide whether you’re going to default to a sneak build for the hundredth time, Skyblivion’s devs said they’ve opted to keep things “closer to the original experience” at the start so players can get up to speed with the mod’s combo of Skyrim and Oblivion mechanics.

Though, lest you forget this is remake rather than a remaster, something the modders have understandably been keen to stress since the official Oblivion remaster rocked up through a flaming gate earlier this year, there are plenty of the sort of tweaks and touches that’ve left me generally more curious to play this interpretation than Bethesda and Virtuos’ efforts.

As you battle through the caves, there are goblin cave paintings and brief glimpses of the White-Gold Tower to ensure the background’s more than a plain brown mush. They’re subtle elements, designed by modders Anna Khudorenko and Penrutet respectively, but I’m hoping they’ll keep the experience feeling a bit fresher than the remaster’s intentionally minimalistic reskinning.

That said, the fresh addition I dug most from what the modders showed off here is the first look at the Imperial Mausoleum, a hall in the Arboretum where Emperor Stewart’s body will now be interred once he meets his demise. The Skyblivion crew tell RPS this was designed by Gabriele Floris, aka Kazuhide. They’ve lent their two architecture degrees to shaping the mod’s version of Cyrodiil’s capital, with real life mock-ups for a restoration of the Roman Emperor Augustus’ mausoleum being cited as the inspiration for Uriel’s resting place.

This Septim tomb’s just one aspect of what you can expect from the mod’s total revamp of the city. “We’ve really set out to entirely remake the Imperial City to be the grand cosmopolitan city it is known as in lore – that means every district is substantially larger and more detailed,” Rebel tells me.

Skyblivion’s still looking for volunteers with the skills to help get it over the line.

Final Fantasy 14 Boss Addresses Mod Controversy After The Game Is Review-Bombed

by admin August 29, 2025

The second incarnation of Final Fantasy 14 debuted in 2013, and it’s proven to be far more resilient than the version that arrived in 2010. However, there’s been discontent in the FF14 community lately over the removal of a popular mod, which led to the game’s subsequent review-bombing on Steam. Now, director Naoki Yoshida has addressed the mod controversy with an appeal to players.

Yoshida’s complete remarks were posted on FF14’s official site, and he requested that excerpts from his statement not be used by media outlets. But since his response was nearly 2,000 words, a concise recap is unavoidable. The issue started when Square Enix’s lawyers sent a letter to modder DarkArchon regarding Mare Synchronos, a mod that allowed players’ customized avatars to be visible outside of their own game. Once Mare Synchronos was removed at Square Enix’s request, some fans shared their fury in the form of negative Steam reviews.

Although Yoshida notes that he tolerates mods and has admiration for some fan-made creations, he’s against mods that violate the game’s intent or design in a negative manner. As a potential example, Yoshida noted that Square Enix could face legal consequences in some countries over nude character mods on display in the game. He also cited customized appearances that mimic paid content from from the game as an example of devaluing the services and collectibles that Square Enix sells to provide the revenue the game needs to remain financially viable.

Yoshida concluded his statement by saying he respects the tradition of modding in PC games, but he also requests that players do so while respecting the rules and integrity of FF14.

Late last year, Square Enix expanded Final Fantasy 14 into the mobile realm and released the game’s fifth expansion, Dawntrail. More recently, Yoshida has shared his intent to make sure Final Fantasy 14 remains compatible with PlayStation 4 as long as possible. However, he added that the limitations of the PS4 hardware may make that less feasible going forward.

New Mod Adds Multiplayer To Marvel's Spider-Man

New Mod Adds Multiplayer To Marvel’s Spider-Man

by admin August 27, 2025

Last year, a trailer leaked for a cancelled multiplayer Spider-Man game that was being developed by Insomniac. It seemed cool. So cool in fact, that it seems to have inspired folks to try and use mods to make online web-swinging with friends a reality. And one such mod is now out, and it looks great.

On August 26, as spotted by ComicBook, a new PC-only mod has been released online that allows people to play Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered with up to six other players. The mod was developed by modder hbgda and is available to those who subscribe to the creator’s Patreon. You can see what the mod looks like in action below, courtesy of a video shared by popular creator Kami on TikTok and Twitter.

Spider-Man Remastered just got a working multiplayer mod on PC and it’s amazing.

Probably the closest thing we’re going to get to The Great Web. pic.twitter.com/6FeT3JEBbz

— KAMI (@Okami13_) August 26, 2025

There are also multiple YouTube videos of the multiplayer Spider-Man mod in action, and it looks surprisingly stable for something as ambitious and wild as this. Sure, it’s not perfect, but considering Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC was never designed to support multiplayer, let alone seven people running and swinging around the map at the same time, the fact that this mod is not only playable but looks extremely polished is incredibly impressive.

Watching footage of hbgda’s mod in action has me hankering to install Spider-Man on my PC and try this out. It also makes me sad that we never got Insomniac’s online multiplayer Spider-Man game. It was reportedly going to be called Spider-Man: The Great Web and would have involved hopping between dimensions alongside your friends. Sadly, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the game was canceled long before the trailer for it leaked in 2024 in the wake of the December 2023 Insomniac data breach.

While it’s very possible the game wouldn’t have had much staying power, which is a problem for a live-service video game, I would have loved to have been able to invite my pals to swing around NYC with me and cause some chaos. At the very least, I hope we see Insomniac add a multiplayer mode to a future Spider-Man game. Doesn’t have to be something elaborate, just something that looks like this mod, but which is playable on PS5, too.

For now, if you want to swing around New York City as Spider-Man with some other Spider-People, your only option is to download this mod and set it up on your PC.

Baldur's Gate 3 custom campaign mod recreates the original Baldur's Gate's Candlekeep and prologue

Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaign mod recreates the original Baldur’s Gate’s Candlekeep and prologue

by admin August 27, 2025

A new Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaign mod has emerged onto the Nexus like Gale’s mitt through that portal, and it’s one you’ll likely want to check out if you fancy getting nostalgic for one of RPG’s classic siblings. Return to Candlekeep, as you might have gleaned from the title, aims to recreate the prologue of the original Baldur’s Gate, by taking you to a certain library fortress.

It’s not surprising someone’s given this a go. After all, daunting tasks as such things might be, a good number of the BG3 custom campaigns being put together with the Moonglasses toolkit have opted to try their hand at taking players to revamped versions of locations from the previous two games.

Enter catchily-named modder 786r786, who released Return to Candlekeep this weekend just gone. Re-creating the opening area from the first game, it’ll let you wander around everywhere from Candlekeep library, to the inn, and the pool/altar combo that makes up the Temple of Oghma.

You get a good look around these, plus a gander at the custom main menu, character creation screen and camp the modder’s included, in the over 20 minute-long tour video below. They don’t do much talking to NPCs in that, likely on account of the mod not having any voice acting at the moment, but write in the description that they’ve pulled across all of the quests and dialogue lines you’d expect from such a recreation. There should be enough to keep you occupied for “about an hour thirty at most”, which is why 786r786 has dubbed this a mini-campaign.

Watch on YouTube

There are some teething issues it’s worth being aware of, not that such a thing’s that surprising given the testing ground advanced BG3 campaign mods still are at this point. Parts of buildings can appear unloaded, leaving roofs awkwardly floating with no supports, while NPC helmets can “disconnect from their head at a distance”. On the plus side, cases of long-term helmet hair affliction are likely lower among the residents of Candlekeep than those of the base game.

786r786 says there’s nothing they can do about these issues at the moment, and as for whether they’ll flesh out the mod more going forwards, they’ve a one word answer: “potentially”.

Regardless of whether they keep at it, this is a cool thing for them to have done, given Larian themselves considered working a return to Candlekeep into Baldur’s Gate 3 while they were weaving their development magic. The devs even got as far as coming up with ideas for a zany seer chilling in the basement, as our Edwin, former RPSer/BG3 lead writer Adam Smith, and keen journo/Larian CEO Swen Vincke chatted about last year.

New Minecraft Mod Turns It Into Portal 2 With A Level Editor

New Minecraft Mod Turns It Into Portal 2 With A Level Editor

by admin August 25, 2025

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see a new Portal game anytime soon from series creators Valve. But now you can create your own Portal 3 in a place I didn’t expect: Minecraft. Or you can play through 50 pre-made Portal 2 puzzles via a newly released Minecraft mod.

On August 22, a group of 20+ modders and fan devs released Portal: Java Edition, a free remake of Valve’s 2011 first-person puzzler built entirely in vanilla Minecraft using resource and data packs. That technically means the project, which is free to download now on PC, doesn’t use any “mods,” though the creators do include extra third-party mods that help with optimization. And you’ll likely want to install those if you plan to play. This rebuilt version of Portal 2 in Minecraft is pushing the Java version of the popular crafting game hard, and it can chug on even beefy PCs without the extra mods.

According to the team behind it, Portal: Java Edition started development in 2020 and has taken roughly five years to complete. The mod includes all the mechanics and features from Portal 2, including portals (of course), lasers, light bridges, and mobility gels. The project is shipping with 50 levels spread across eight map packs. And if you burn through all of those, well, don’t worry, you can make some more, thanks to the included level editor. The level editor should be pretty easy to use for Minecraft vets, as it seems to function just like building anything else in Mojang’s crafting game, just with more big red buttons and companion cubes.

To play Portal: Java Edition, you’ll need to own Minecraft: Java Edition on PC and then download the project’s files from GitHub. I had to download an older version of Minecraft to get Portal working in the game, but that’s not too hard and is fully supported by the official Minecraft launcher. Once more people are playing this and building levels in it, I expect to replay Doom’s E1M1 and the first level of Super Mario Bros. in the near future.

FFXIV's Most Important Mod Is Shutting Down With No Warning

FFXIV’s Most Important Mod Is Shutting Down With No Warning

by admin August 22, 2025

A very important and extremely popular mod for roleplayers in MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, Mare Synchronos, is shutting down with less than 48 hours notice. The news has caught many off guard, and the FFXIV community isn’t happy that such a vital mod for many will no longer be usable in the MMO.

Mare Synchronos is a free third-party plugin for FFXIV that, along with some other tools and software, allows players to synchronize their cosmetic mods and custom animations. While thousands of players used the plugin, it was primarily popular with roleplayers and others who enjoy the more social aspects of FFXIV. With Mare, as it is often referred to online, friends could see each other’s characters as they appear on their own PC, complete with all their mods and extra animations that normally are’t seen by other players due to mod restrictions. For many who find FFXIV’s customization features to be lacking and who rely on mods to tweak their looks to create their perfect character, Mare was vital in letting other players see how they “really” look. It was also popular in in-game nightclubs and other areas to allow players to sync up custom dance animations and other…activities. And now all the fun is ending.

On August 21, one of the lead devs behind Mare Synchronos reportedly posted on the mod’s Discord server that they had received a “legal inquiry” about the mod, likely from publisher Square Enix, and were shutting down Mare completely.

“With a heavy heart, I have to announce the end of Mare Synchronos as you know it,” said Her Royal Floofness on Discord, in a message shared on Reddit. “I’ve received a legal inquiry concerning the project. After reviewing my options with counsel, I’m winding it down.”

Royal Floofness confirmed that Mare will continue to work until August 22 at 6:00 AM. After that point, the server will shut down and the plugin will be removed. “Enjoy your last doomsday party,” said the modder. “Thank you for the past 3 years of Mare, I hope you enjoyed the ride.” Kotaku has contacted Square Enix about the mod being shut down.

Many players online were shocked by the news and speculated that Mare being killed might lead to fewer people playing the game.

“Holy fuck getting rid of this is MASSIVE,” posted one user on Reddit. “This game has a huge RP player base. Does [Square Enix] think people keep subbed to this game to raid log?”

“If you entire reason for playing was the modded glam game then you probably have less of a reason to play now,” said another Reddit user.

“Genuinely worried about what this means for the RP community (and I mean the actual RP community, not nightclub/Balmung QS.) I’ve been actively RPing in the Mateus Quicksands for the past two years or so, and whenever Mare has even had as much of a hiccup the Quicksands clears out. There’s definitely been an over-reliance on Mare, but now it’s been taken away, I worry a lot of my fellow RPers will just struggle to adapt and bail,” said a roleplayer on Reddit in response to the news.

Others are hopeful that someone else will fork the mod and that a similar tool will be created in the future. For now, the nightclubs of Final Fantasy XIV will be a bit less raucous in the coming days.

The Old Country Nude Mod Removed By Take-Two

The Old Country Nude Mod Removed By Take-Two

by admin August 21, 2025

Two free mods for the PC version of Mafia: The Old Country that removed the clothes from one of the game’s main female characters were removed by publisher Take-Two Interactive using a DMCA request.

As spotted by PC Gamer, a pair of NSFW nude mods for the recently released linear action game Mafia: The Old Country have been removed from popular modding site Nexus Mods by Take Two’s lawyers, according to a Nexus customer support representative on the site’s forums. One of the nude mods replaced Isabella Torrisi’s in-game model with a nude version.  The other mod, “Extended Textures For Nude Isabella,” allowed players to modify the character’s model, letting them give her “bigger nipples, bigger areola,” and even offering “cute pubic hair” options, according to text still indexed on Google search results. Both of these mods were created by Nexus user norskpl.

“A takedown/DMCA request was issued by Lisa Deere [on behalf of Take Two Interactive Software, Inc.] on 08/12/2025,” posted a Nexus mod rep on the forums. “We were able to internally verify the legitimacy of this claim through the requesting of additional evidence to prove the identity of the claimant and the rights they hold over the content in question.”

Interestingly, screenshots of the mod seem to indicate that norskpl didn’t create the nude model of Isabella themselves, but instead ripped it out of a different part of The Old Country which features a nude Torrisi in bed with another character. It seems that they then tweaked the model and added options to modify it using mods. So in a way, this is like Take-Two Interactive’s lawyers DMCAing their own content. It’s an odd situation, but not surprising, as in the past, Take-Two has used DMCA requests to yank down mods they don’t approve of in other games, including Grand Theft Auto V.

Perhaps using the Mafia: The Old Country‘s own pre-existing nude model is the problem, as it is content owned by Take-Two being used in a way they likely don’t approve of. I wonder, had the modder had just replaced the don’s daughter with a nude Shrek or Thanos, if Take-Two lawyers would have shown up at all.
