Xbox mobile game store launch “stymied” by Apple, says Microsoft

by admin May 21, 2025

Microsoft has sided with Epic in its feud against Apple, claiming the iPhone maker has “stymied” the company’s efforts to launch its Xbox mobile game store.

Back in May last year, Microsoft announced plans to release a new Xbox mobile game store. At this time, the company envisioned it to be ready for release by that summer. However, this did not happen.

Now, Microsoft has filed a legal brief in support of Epic Games as part of Apple’s appeal against a recent ruling, which follows a five-year legal battle between Epic and Apple, and has now resulted in Fortnite making its return to the App Store in the US. Here, Microsoft shed more light on the delay to its own mobile store.

Microsoft stated it wishes to “offer consumers a workable solution by launching its own online store”, but efforts have been “stymied” by Apple and its strict App Store rules.

As shared by The Verge, this is how Microsoft explains its current situation:

“The district court’s injunction allows Apple to maintain its in-app exclusivity but at least should have enabled Microsoft to offer consumers a workable solution by launching its own online store – accessible via link-out – for in-app items to be purchased off-app and used in games or other apps. And that is what Microsoft wants to do. But even this solution has been stymied by Apple.

“Prior to the district court’s most recent order, Microsoft had been unable to implement linked-out payments (or even inform customers that alternative purchase methods exist) because of Apple’s new anti-steering policies that restrict Microsoft’s communication to users and impose an even higher economic cost to Microsoft than before the injunction.”

As noted by the publication, the recent court ruling does make it possible for Microsoft to launch its mobile store, but the company still wants to ensure Apple’s appeal against the ruling is unsuccessful, in order to avoid having to potentially remove its own store further down the line.

Microsoft notes in its filing that Apple “makes no argument that the technical or policy changes cannot be undone”, and that the company’s own “experience managing app stores confirms that Apple’s policies could be restored if Apple ultimately prevails on appeal”.

We will keep you abreast of any further developments regarding both Epic vs Apple, and Xbox’s mobile store.

Final Fantasy 14 on mobile will release in June, but only in China

by admin May 20, 2025

The mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 will be released in June, but only in China.

Yesterday, a trailer for the game was released on Chinese video platform Bilibili including the date, while a Live Letter stream provided new details on the game.

The mobile game is being developed by the Tencent-owned Lightspeed Studio, which previously developed PUBG Mobile, hence being released in China first.

However, a global release is still expected, though its date is unknown. In the meantime, players worldwide are able to sign up for updates and news on future tests on the game’s website.

A livestream for the game provided fresh details, including its 16 gear dye layers that will allow players to customise the look of their Warrior of Light in great detail.

For comparison, the main Final Fantasy 14 added only its second dye layer with the latest expansion, Dawntrail.

Also shown, as per a reddit thread, were a new dodge button for all classes, as well as auto-pathing to quests and fates for ease of control – note there won’t be auto-combat.

Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was officially revealed by director and producer Naoki Yoshida back in November last year. He confirmed the game will be free-to-play but won’t include gacha mechanics.

A trailer at the time gave us our first proper look at gameplay, including a fully-realised version of Eorzea in the palm of your hand.

The game’s release will follow the cancellation and shutdown of a number of mobile games from Square Enix in recent years.

Just last week, the company cancelled development of mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, though confirmed Kingdom Hearts 4 is still on the way.

Square Enix’s latest financial reports showed a drop in sales of its games, particularly with mobile games owing to multiple cancellations. However, sales and profits of its MMOs have increased thanks to Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail.

It makes business sense, then, to release a version of the MMORPG on mobile as part of its multiplatform strategy.

Google releases its NotebookLM mobile app

by admin May 20, 2025

The app appears to offer similar functionality to the desktop version of NotebookLM, including the ability to upload sources of information that the app can summarize. It can also make AI-generated, podcast-like Audio Overviews. With the app, you can listen to those Audio Overviews in the background while you’re doing other things on your phone or while offline, Google says. Might be a handy way to get caught up on your performance review.

The company teased the launch of the mobile app for the AI-powered tool last month. Its official arrival is happening just ahead of Google I/O, which kicks off with the opening keynote at 1PM ET on Tuesday. It’s probably going to be an AI show.

Update, May 19th: The iOS app is now available, too.
