Texas AG to investigate Meta and Character.AI over ‘misleading’ mental health claims

by admin August 19, 2025

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced plans to investigate both Meta AI Studio and Character.AI for offering AI chatbots that can claim to be health tools, and potentially misusing data collected from underage users.

Paxton says that AI chatbots from either platform “can present themselves as professional therapeutic tools,” to the point of lying about their qualifications. That behavior that can leave younger users vulnerable to misleading and inaccurate information. Because AI platforms often rely on user prompts as another source of training data, either company could also be violating young user’s privacy and misusing their data. This is of particular interest in Texas, where the SCOPE Act places specific limits on what companies can do with data harvested from minors, and requires platform’s offer tools so parents can manage the privacy settings of their children’s accounts.

For now, the Attorney General has submitted Civil Investigative Demands (CIDs) to both Meta and Character.AI to see if either company is violating Texas consumer protection laws. As TechCrunch notes, neither Meta nor Character.AI claim their AI chatbot platforms should be used as mental health tools. That doesn’t prevent there from being multiple “Therapist” and “Psychologist” chatbots on Character.AI. Nor does it stop either of the companies’ chatbots from claiming they’re licensed professionals, as 404 Media reported in April.

“The user-created Characters on our site are fictional, they are intended for entertainment, and we have taken robust steps to make that clear,” a Character.AI spokesperson said when asked to comment on the Texas investigation. “For example, we have prominent disclaimers in every chat to remind users that a Character is not a real person and that everything a Character says should be treated as fiction.”

Meta shared a similar sentiment in its comment. “We clearly label AIs, and to help people better understand their limitations, we include a disclaimer that responses are generated by AI — not people,” the company said. Meta AIs are also supposed to “direct users to seek qualified medical or safety professionals when appropriate.” Sending people to real resources is good, but ultimately disclaimers themselves are easy to ignore, and don’t act as much of an obstacle.

With regards to privacy and data usage, both Meta’s privacy policy and the Character.AI’s privacy policy acknowledge that data is collected from users’ interactions with AI. Meta collects things like prompts and feedback to improve AI performance. Character.AI logs things like identifiers and demographic information and says that information can be used for advertising, among other applications. How either policy applies to children, and fits with Texas’ SCOPE Act, seems like it’ll depend on how easy it is to make an account.

‘It’s really misleading’: Ballerina director Len Wiseman explains why the John Wick series’ new movie shouldn’t be called a spin-off film

by admin June 3, 2025

  • Ballerina: From the World of John Wick shouldn’t be called a spin-off, its director says
  • The film series’ latest entry is set between the third and fourth John Wick movies
  • It “expands on the mythology” of the action thriller franchise, he adds

Ballerina director Len Wiseman has rejected claims that the John Wick film franchise’s latest entry is a spin-off.

Speaking to TechRadar ahead of the movie’s release, Wiseman argued that it should actually be called a “spin-on” – i.e. a film that puts its own spin on a film franchise’s well-established formula.

Wiseman admits that very few people, if anyone, will have heard the phrase “spin-on” before. Nevertheless, he insists that the Ana de Armas-starring film is “fully connected” to the movie series’ other entries – and not just because Wick appears in it.

Ballerina‘s first trailer raised eyebrows about Wick’s inclusion. After all, at the end of John Wick Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves’ iconic hitman was – spoiler! – presumed dead. With John Wick 5 in early development, though, it’s likely that the well-dressed assassin hasn’t taken his last breath.

Watch On

However, Ballerina takes place between John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum and its sequel, which is why Reeves’ gun-for-hire is, at this point on the John Wick timeline, still alive and kicking. For more on said timeline, read my guide on how to watch the John Wick movies in order.

But I’m getting off-track. With Ballerina set between Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4, plus Reeves’ involvement in its story, the franchise’s latest entry should be viewed as the mainline series’ newest flick. It’s for that reason that Wiseman has coined the “spin-on” moniker for one of 2025’s highly anticipated new movies.

When I ask him if Ballerina should be labeled an “in-between-quel” – another industry term for a movie that’s set between two other films – Wiseman replied: “Yeah, it is. I’ve seen people call it a spin-off, which is really misleading.

“Ballerina’s events mostly run parallel to John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. We’re really building out the world of John Wick, so it’s more of a ‘spin-on’ than a ‘spin-off’. I know that’s not a phrase, but it should be!”

Asked to explain how Ballerina explores the movies series colloquially known as the ‘John Wick universe’, Wiseman added: “One of the things that first attracted me to this film was the mythology of John Wick and how layered it is.

“Here, we’re able to dive deeper into that mythos and explore the Ruska Roma, who we’ve met in previous movies. Before, we’ve seen this group through John Wick’s eyes and his experiences [with them]. Now, we get to sift through the layers of their folklore, and try to balance that with what was previously established. We had a ton of fun with that and I think audiences will appreciate it.”

Ballerina: From the World of John Wick lands in theaters worldwide on June 6.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Strategy Over Alleged Bitcoin Misleading

by admin May 20, 2025

On May 16, a class action lawsuit was filed against Michael Saylor’s Strategy (previously MicroStrategy) and its top executives, including President and CEO Phong Le and Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang.

The plaintiff, Anas Hamza, alleges that the Bitcoin (BTC) proxy firm misrepresented crucial aspects of its Bitcoin investment strategy, potentially violating federal securities laws.

Plaintiff Anas Hamza Sues Strategy

The lawsuit claims that Strategy’s disclosures misled investors regarding material facts about its Bitcoin holdings and corporate strategy. Hamza is bringing this suit on behalf of other shareholders who may have suffered losses due to the company’s alleged misleading communications.

Specifically, the case cites violations of the Securities Exchange Act, which governs the accurate disclosure of information to investors, searching damages for these alleged violations.

Some of the firm’s skeptics, like Bank of America analyst Craig Coben, are worried that the firm’s aggressive approach to Bitcoin accumulation could expose stockholders to a lot of volatility in the market.

The expert has earlier stated that this continued accumulation could turn into a “vicious cycle” if the Bitcoin price collapses. However, Coben highlighted that as long as Strategy can fetch a premium to its net asset value, shareholders will benefit.

Michael Saylor has also previously promised the firm’s investors that the company would be fine even if the cryptocurrency’s value dropped 90% and stayed that low for another four or five years.

Saylor Reveals New Bitcoin Purchases

Despite the legal challenges, Michael Saylor has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. However, he disclosed on Monday further Bitcoin purchases on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), indicating that the company remains committed to its aggressive acquisition strategy.

Through a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, the Bitcoin proxy firm disclosed its acquisition of an additional 7,390 Bitcoin for approximately $764.9 million, purchasing these coins at an average price of $103,498 each.

This brings the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to 576,230 BTC, valued at around $40.18 billion. Saylor further noted that the firm achieved a Bitcoin yield of 16.3% year-to-date (YTD) for 2025.

Since reaching a yearly low of $232 in April, the firm’s stock, MSTR, has also achieved notable gains. It now trades at $410, reflecting a 76% increase that mirrors Bitcoin’s price recovery above the pivotal $100,000 threshold, indicating a resurgence of capital in the market following a challenging end to the first quarter of the year.

Whe writing, BTC trades at $104,860, recording a 23% surge on the monthly time frame, only 3.6% below its all-time high of $109,000 reached last January. Year-to-date, the market’s leading cryptocurrency is up 57%, per CoinGecko data.
