After 30 minutes with Hollow Knight: Silksong, I’m desperate to play another 100 hours of its refined, needle-sharp action

Going hands on with Silksong for the first time is oddly nerve-wracking. After six years of anticipation, hype, and desperate occult rituals, the question is: can it possibly live up to expectations?

What ends up surprising me most, then, is how much the game puts me at ease. From the first moment I take control of Hornet, it’s like slipping on my favourite old pair of shoes. Six years? No, I’m back in Hollow Knight’s world like no time has passed.

That’s not to say it simply feels the same. Even missing her full range of traversal abilities, Hornet feels distinctly different from the Knight — more agile, more graceful, more precise. As soon as I try her deadly divekick attack, I can tell I’m going to need to master it for boss fights to come.

Though the game does feel different in the hands, it’s speaking the same language. It takes mere seconds to get to grips with Hornet, from her little backwards step before turning to her quick, elegant attacks.

Immediately I’m out into a hostile but familiar world. Keys to find, shortcuts to earn, hidden items secreted just out of view. It looks sharper, but this is Hollow Knight as you know it.

The difference, then, comes in how Hornet is able to traverse it. The Knight felt like a wretch cast into the darkness and forced to learn on the fly. Hornet feels equipped and confident.

Her sprint is super fast, letting you backtrack in half the time. Her jump offers much more fine control over its height—a tool put to the test not just in platforming, but with aerial enemies to launch yourself at and fiery projectiles to leap over.

Combat pushes you to treat both air and ground as distinct angles of attack. Helmeted enemies ignore your strikes from above, forcing you down to their level, while shield-bearers constantly change which direction they guard themselves from, keeping you on the move to find your opportunities.

It comes to a head in the demo with a duel against a boss who feels like a mirror to Hornet—fast, agile, and precise in her own ways. Launching rapier thrusts and screen-filling whirlwind strikes and throwing up cheeky parries when she appears vulnerable, she forces me to lock in and make the most of my full arsenal.

That means plenty of dashes and divekicks, but also finding the right moments to launch swift throwing knives. They’re helpful for grabbing every damage opportunity, but I can’t rely on them entirely—and not just because their ammo is limited.

Getting in close and landing a few old fashioned strikes is vital, because it charges my magic bar. What’s that for? Well, it depends what kind of player you are. For the cautious, filling it to max lets you spend it for a burst of healing. But there’s a more reckless choice: spending chunks of it to launch super-charged attacks.

In the end, a little of both (and some very skin-of-my-teeth evasion) sees me through to vanquish my foe—but she jumps away off-screen before the killing blow, and I’m sure she’ll return for a harder fight later down the line.

I can’t wait to meet her again. Heading into this, my fear was that Silksong couldn’t live up to how high its expectations have climbed. In a way that’s true—if you’re hoping for a sea change for the genre, I didn’t see anything in this 30 minute slice to suggest one. It’s new but it’s safe, working in familiar metroidvania formulas.

Yet those 30 minutes sucked me right back into Hollow Knight’s world, much more than I even expected. By the end I was desperate for another 100 hours. If what you’ve been waiting for is more Hollow Knight, but even better, more refined, and needle-sharp, this seems to be it.

Kirby Air Riders Nintendo Direct Coming Tuesday, Will Run A Whopping 45 Minutes

A Nintendo Direct has been scheduled for tomorrow–the third one in the past month–this time focusing on a single game: Kirby Air Riders. Much like how his Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentations went, game director Masahiro Sakurai will be hosting this particular Direct.

According to the livestream’s description, it will “provide an in-depth look at the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game,” and will be roughly 45 minutes long, which is longer than both of the previous two Directs combined. It kicks off at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST, and you’ll be able to watch it on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel.

Now Playing: Kirby Air Riders – Official Reveal Trailer | Nintendo Switch 2

Kirby Air Riders was announced back in April during a Nintendo Direct that revealed a bevy of Nintendo Switch 2 games, though at the time all that was shown off was a pre-rendered trailer. Not much is known about this sequel, but with tomorrow’s Direct running at around 45 minutes, that will soon change. The game will also mark the first time Sakurai has directed a Kirby title since the original Air Rider for the GameCube.

Nintendo hasn’t held a traditional Direct since its full Switch 2 reveal, instead opting for a Partner Showcase in July and an Indie World Showcase earlier this month. The Partner Showcase didn’t have too many massive reveals, though it did include a new Monster Hunter Stories, Katamari, and a fresh look at Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The Indie World Showcase was on the quieter side too, but still well worth a look for some neat upcoming titles.

Check Out 20 Minutes Of The Blood Of Dawnwalker In New Gameplay Overview

The Blood of Dawnwalker has been on the radars of RPG and fantasy fans for years, since studio Rebel Wolves, which is comprised of ex-Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 developers, revealed it was working on a new RPG back in 2022. The game was featured during the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month, giving us our first look at The Blood of Dawnwalker gameplay, and now, Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco have released a new 20-minute gameplay overview. 

In it, we get a new look at the game’s Witcher-inspired combat, magic system, choice-driven dialogue, vampire enemies, and so much more. It continues to look awesome, and considering the pedigree of Rebel Wolves, it’s a game I’m excited to play next year.

Rebel Wolves describes The Blood of Dawnwalker as a “single-player open-world dark fantasy action-RPG with a strong focus on story and narrative.” It is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC and is set to launch sometime next year.

Eight minutes of footage from an unfinished open world D&D game has leaked

Four years ago, Hidden Path Entertainment—the studio behind the Defense Grid series and the codeveloper of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive—posted a bunch of job listings that revealed it was developing a big-budget open world Dungeons & Dragons game. Bad news came in 2024 when its creative director posted on LinkedIn to reveal the studio had spent six months searching for “replacement funding” to continue work on it, but in the absence of that funding, made the decision to “pause development on that project and reduce the company size until we have an opportunity to return to it.” 44 developers lost their jobs.

Now, an eight-minute video and a collection of concept art for the game has leaked (via MP1st). Codenamed Project Dante, it’s a third-person RPG with action combat (very early-in-development action combat, I feel obliged to say), and two AI-controlled companions. After an initial fight we see a simple puzzle being solved to activate a magical temple, some exploration, a flashback cutscene, a snippet of tavern conversation, and then a song.

The fact there’s a full song being sung by a group of NPCs you can overhear just by sneaking up on them is the most surprising thing in the footage, which is otherwise fairly by-the-numbers fantasy RPG stuff. It reminds me of Dragon’s Dogma, only with a Forgotten Realms skin.

The concept art is a nice collection of D&D imagery, showcasing an adventuring party that includes an orc bard, a tiefling rogue, and an elf lady with a tiny dragon pet. There’s a bunch of dragons, some displacer beast kittens, and an adorable tressym—one of the flying cats like Gale has in Baldur’s Gate 3. It looks exactly like the kind of art I show my players when I’m running D&D.

While nothing about what’s been leaked seems exceptional, it does seem like development was fairly far along. While Wizards of the Coast did reportedly cancel five in-development videogames a couple of years ago, it seems like Project Dante was put on indefinite hold due to a loss of funding. Either way, it’s a shame to see so much hard work go nowhere.

Another D&D game that’s definitely still in the works is the singleplayer action-adventure coming from the former director of Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi games. That one’s being developed by Giant Skull and all we know is that it will apparently contain “immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal” and is being made in Unreal Engine 5.

On June 17, on-chain monitoring firm Whale Alert revealed in a recent X post a mysterious crypto transfer worth nearly half a billion dollars, involving the renowned enterprise blockchain company Ripple and the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, XRP.

According to the data tracker, Ripple sent a massive 200 million XRP tokens worth over $438 million to an unknown wallet, sparking curiosities among XRP holders.

The move, which appears to be a longstanding routine from Ripple, comes as no surprise, as Ripple has been consistent with moving large amounts of XRP tokens to unidentified wallets month after month. However, XRP holders are concerned about the motive behind the move, considering its timing.

Notably, the massive transfer marks another major XRP move made by Ripple since June, as the company appears to be redistributing its XRP holdings. Earlier this month, Ripple unlocked a billion XRP tokens from escrow after it had locked 670 million tokens in its escrow wallets about three days earlier.

While the motive behind the recent XRP transfer from Ripple remains uncertain, XRP holders are worried that it might be a bearish move, considering that it happened after XRP saw its price fall sharply from a high of $2.25 to an unexpected low of $2.15 on the same day.

Also, Ripple’s prolonged legal case with the SEC, which has recently been put on hold, has made the move more concerning, as XRP investors are carefully observing actions from the company to help them hedge against potential shortcomings.

XRP plummets 6.26%

The massive XRP transfer from Ripple to an unidentified destination comes at a time when XRP is seeing massive sell-offs from holders amid a broad crypto market bloodbath.

Data from CoinMarketCap shows that the token has dropped massively by 6.26% over the last day, with its price trading negatively at $2.16 at press time.

3 things I liked and 2 I didn’t after 30 minutes with Grounded 2

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s the year of Obsidian: Microsoft’s fastest-working studio already has one 2025 RPG under its belt in Avowed, and it’s putting out another one in October with The Outer Worlds 2. Completing the trifecta of 2025 Obsidian launches is Grounded 2, the odd duck of the portfolio. Not only is it a survival game rather than an RPG, but it’s also the only Obsidian series that gets to release in early access.

Grounded 2 was one of the meatier demos I went hands-on with at Summer Game Fest. Microsoft let me loose at the beginning of the game with a timer, so I sped through the tutorial and made it to the new open world map ASAP—a city park that, when shrunk down to the size of an ant, looks like an alien planet.

I never got around to the original Grounded, so my impressions of the sequel might have some overlap with the first game. Below are a handful of likes and dislikes after 30 minutes with Grounded 2.

Cool 👍 – Ant mounts

Mounts are new to Grounded 2, and they were by far the standout feature of my demo. Obsidian calls its rideable bugs “buggies”, and they’re a lot more than just a faster way to get around. The ant buggy I rode, which Obsidian spawned in since you don’t usually get mounts so early in the game, could run, sprint, attack, and crucially, carry around stacks of huge grass blades for construction projects.

I got the sense that hatching your first buggy is a big moment in Grounded 2, like building a sub in Subnautica or hatching a dinosaur army in Ark. Once you have a buggy, you’ll never be roaming alone again. Yes, you can pet them.

Meh 👎 – Combat

Seeing the combat from the original Grounded in action is one of the reasons I never played it. Grounded 2 did not feel like a huge step up. Stabbing tiny ants with a makeshift spear was slow, janky, and lacked any satisfying feedback. Of course, I only messed with the weakest stuff in the tech tree, so maybe there’s a sick plasma ray I can craft after 20 hours, but I don’t think killing stuff will be the highlight of Grounded 2.

The first tool you pick up in Grounded 2 is also the last one you’ll ever need. Like the Gerber multitool my dad kept clipped to his belt my entire childhood, the Omni-Tool is a shovel, axe, wrench, and hammer all in one. Unifying all the tools sounds like the sort of simplification that would annoy survival fans, but I think it’s more about freeing up inventory space for less permanent resources. You still need to enhance each individual tool through an upgrade tree.

Meh 👎 – Voice acting

Adults doing their best impressions of young teens ain’t doing it for me. The nasally whine of the character I chose, Max Smalls, was so over-the-top that, 10 minutes in, I wondered if there’d be an option to turn off all dialogue in the final game.

Cool 👍 – Brookhollow Park

Surely the whole “whoa, everything is big” trick will feel like any old day in the park for returning players, but I spent a lot of my demo time craning my neck up and admiring the scale of Obsidian’s shrunken world. Chopping down grass “trees”, slurping up individual dewdrops, and climbing random pieces of litter like they’re mountains felt like stepping into a Bug’s Life.

Obsidian says the opening area of Grounded 2 is the size of the entire Grounded 1 map, which is exciting. You’ll definitely need more ground to cover with the speed boost of buggies. I didn’t manage to reach the edge of the map before my demo was over, but I made it far enough to find what might be the chillest part of the map, a roughly 3ft by 5ft tunnel running under a couple of wooden boards.

Despite being revealed last, Grounded 2 is coming sooner than The Outer Worlds 2. Early access begins July 29 on all platforms (except PlayStation) with a large chunk of the final map (but not all of it) and the first chapter of its story.

As part of IGN Live, Sandfall Interactive has unveiled the opening 10 minutes of an all-new documentary following the team as it developed and released Clair Obscur: 33 Expedition.

The exclusive clip shows the documentary starts at the end, with Sandfall developers counting down the seconds to the moment its inaugural game went live. It then rewinds to the beginning, introducing us to the development team, the motion capture actors, and the story behind the game.

There is no release date as yet for the documentary, as it’s currently a work-in-progress. However, the ten-minute taster offers a great insight into what to expect, including the revelation that that delightful moment between Monoco and Verso was entirely improvised.

Jennifer English (Maelle), Ben Starr (Verso), Shala Nyx (Sciel), Kirsty Rider (Lune), Rich Keeble (Monoco), and Maxence Cazorla (Esquie) also joined the IGN Live stage to talk about their work on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

“We were all really excited,” English said. “We weren’t as stressed as the developers were, but I was dead nervous about it because we put all our love and heart into it and hope it pays off – and thankfully it did.”

“You can do whatever you do in the studio, but then it stops being yours. You don’t know what it’s going to become,” Ben Starr added. “There are so many circumstances that go into the release of a game, and I felt, personally, there was a huge amount of pressure. It’s a game I wanted to be good for the team because they had put so much work into it, and because we didn’t just come into it, we were an additional part of it.”

Sciel actor Shala Nyx also explained how their character has resonated so deeply with players.

“It’s so cinematic. It’s just so wonderful to be the voice and body of a character that is so rich and has so much emotional depth,” Nyx said.

“I’ve had so many people reach out to me about how my character has helped them with their depression and helped them with their mental health. It’s so ephemeral and every moment is so rich, and that’s a testament to the writing.”

“Outstanding artwork and glorious combat bring Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s bold, painterly world to life,” reads Eurogamer’s Clair Obscur review.

On its first day, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold 500,000 copies. Within three days, the game had hit a million copies sold. Then, 33 days after its release on 28th May, the game has reached 3.3 million sales across PC and console. “We couldn’t make that up,” said a social post sharing the news.

The SHIB transfer, which originated from an unknown wallet, suggests that a major whale or institutional entity could be making a strategic play. The transaction, due to its magnitude and the relatively short time frame, has sparked speculation about whether it is a sell-off preparation, a custodial migration, or a signal of institutional interest in SHIB.

The huge whale transaction, however, was shown to be related to market maker custody rather than a whale looking to sell coins. The receiving address, Coinbase Institutional — a service tailored for high-net-worth individuals and institutions — provides insight into the transaction.

A large holder or fund might be preparing to custody SHIB in expectation of future price appreciation. It could also simply be transferring assets from a cold wallet to Coinbase Institutional for secure storage, not immediate selling.

Shiba Inu experienced a three-day slide from its June 3 highs of $0.00001345 but recovered at support near $0.0000119 on Friday with above-average volume, indicating a clear demand zone. The momentum was sustained in the early Saturday session. As of writing, SHIB was up 3.10% in the last 24 hours to $0.00001282 and 3.70% weekly.

As the developer of one of the largest, most prestigious, and highly anticipated Unreal Engine 5 games currently in the works, CD Projekt Red was invited to the stage of the latest edition of State of Unreal to deliver an updated look at The Witcher 4.

The event’s main focus was on the engine’s 5.6 iteration, and CDPR brought a demo running on the latest version of the engine to showcase a number of technical innovations – and some gameplay.

It’s important to note that while the build was being played live with a controller, this is still a tech demo meant to highlight how CD Projekt Red is utilising the tools and features of Unreal Engine 5.6. This is the studio’s first game on Epic’s engine, too, so it’s not a stretch to say the final game may not look like that.

All that being said, the demo was running on a standard PS5, at 60fps with raytracing. It’s a pretty impressive showcase of what a next-gen Witcher could look like, even if it’s hard to belive final code will look that good.

The footage does not feature any monster hunting, or really any combat whatsoever. But, it does show crowd interactions, facial animations, animation motion-matching for multiple characters, and how quickly the game can load complex geometry to deliver a dense and incredibly detailed world.

We’re not likely to see much more of the game for a while, so better crank the video all the way up to 4K60 to enjoy it as artifact-less as possible. The Witcher 4 does not have a release date, but the game is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

After many bet against it, a PS5 State of Play is coming tomorrow with over 40 minutes of game reveals

Sony has officially announced that it’s going to be hosting an event in June after all. It’s going to be of the State of Play variety, and it will be airing live tomorrow. Sony has, in recent years, made a habit of announcing those livestreams one or two days before the event’s scheduled date.

This June’s State of Play is no different, and it looks like it won’t be heavy on first-party games.

This week’s State of Play will be live tomorrow, June 4 at 2pm PT, 5pm ET, 10pm UK. In the announcement blog post, Sony said we can expect “news and updates” on games coming to PS5.

“The show highlights a selection of great games from creators across the globe,” the blog post adds, which really doesn’t tell us much. It is clear, however, that this won’t be a first-party-focused show, though it is curious that Sony elected not to use the terms ‘first’ or ‘third-party’ in the announcement.

In any case, this State of Play is going to a little beefy, clocking in at over 40-minutes-long. As always, you’ll be able to watch it live on PlayStation’s official Twitch, and YouTube channels.

This week is going to be very busy with events and game reveals. Summer Game Fest’s live opening show is scheduled for Friday, June 6, and the first edition of IO Interactive’s IOI Showcase is taking place just a couple of hours later on the same day.

Then, on Sunday, June 8, Xbox will take its turn to host its own showcase, which will be followed by a dedicated The Outer Worlds 2 direct, so it’s all popping off. EA and Ubisoft are seemingly going to sit this one out, but we wouldn’t bet against some of their rumoured and in-development games showing up at one (or more) of these shows.
